  • Today, we'll take apart the Spyderco Byrd Meadowlark 2 in Titanium, a knife that's pretty Delica-like, but with few key changes that make disassembly a bit easier.

It's weird seeing 8cr13mov with titanium. Like marble counters with linoleum flooring, or a gold leaf on a hotdog.

The focus with knives for the largest part in the past decade has been mostly on handles, art, weird fasteners. Heat treat and higher known quantity steel is expensive and getting no cheaper. Its not just Spyderco... Its all of em now

A really easy way to reassemble a Delica is to put everything together aside from the Chicago screw holding the lock bar in, align the blade to the open position, and hold the lock bar in while aligning the screw that holds it in place. No fighting with the nubs that hold the backspacer in place that way. This method saved my sanity.

      Agreed

Agree wholeheartedly. You can also use a zip tie to hold the lock bar in the depressed position.

Came here to learn how to reassemble a similar knife. Did not expect it to be thoroughly roasted 😂

I had the black version and loved it, sometimes I would forget I had it since it hid behind my belts, which is good for me, but now I'm looking at this version.

Curious if the regular delica vg-10 blade fits on these scales

Just for reference, the Delica will not swap with the Meadowlark. Delica body is a bit longer, lock.bar is considerably longer, and backspacer is shorter. The screws are fairly close but still no match.
Otherwise, I'd consider putting my S90 D4 blade into my Meadowlark.
As it stand, I got a Cara Cara 2 and Meadowlark 2 in Ti, going to put the recent Emerson Wave Cara Cara 2 blade/lockbar and the Hawkbill blade/lockbar in if possible, which it should be, though these knives are hand-fitted like full-papers spydies so you may end up with rougher knives, or one that is super smooth and one really rough, depending on the fitment.
If these swaps go well, they may become my EDC for a while. Even though it's a cheap steel, I don't have any trouble with 8Cr13MoV, it takes a fine edge and is easy to sharpen. Good enough for everyday use for sure.

These and the cara cara 2 ti are currently on clearance as they are being discontinued so i picked up the cara cara 2 ti for $55 shipped. It would be awesome to be able to swap the endura blade into it with better steel but the lock bar is shorter for some reason than the endura so I assume the meadowlark and delica are not interchangeable either.

This was a pain in the arse to put back together. I have a Byrd with G10. The pivot screws didn't want to come together with the inner metal plate no matter what I did, I had to use a vise-grip to get it done. My finger tips feel raw now. Never doing this again.

If swapping just the blades doesn’t work you could probably switch out the lock bar and the blade and have more success. You wouldn’t get the choil but you still get a non-crap steel

I was thinking the scales might swap easily with the scales/liners from the pakka wood Delica he has.

This seems like an odd choice to put the titanium on. Why wouldn't spyderco at least do this to the raven or crow that come in bd1?

i personaly think that owning a knockoff company is a good thing ... people start seeing the difference between the good the bad and the ugly so naturaly people start buying the more expensive brand when they see where 40 extra gets you
