They could do with a 777-9 from their SFO or EWR hubs for high capacity markets like USA-tokyo, London, Frankfurt, etc Maybe like 10 aircraft is enough and the rest could be the 787 fleet
United has a young 777-300ER fleet compared to other airlines. But The US - Asia market is perfect for United to use the 777x, when the time is right. I agree the 787 does so well for United and American to do most international flights, the 777x will handle the Asian market. United is the only US airline with a really significant US-Asia market.
The 777x will be the biggest game changer in the industry. It will have unmatched payload, distance & economy. For those who have waited out the Boeing issues will have huge advantages over ever other plane type.
Same capacity and range as a 747-400. With ETOPS 370 it can fly any scheduled route in the world. The jumbo jet of the future. 4-engine airliners are a thing of the past.
I understand United’s business model is different like delta and American but I feel like this aircraft would make them stronger on their long haul widebody flights and I feel like it could unlock some longer flights longer than Newark to Dubai. Maybe compete for the New York/Newark to Sydney like how qantas does JFK-SYD United would compete indirectly with EWR to SYD I feel
Most likely United would eventually order the 777-8 to replace older 777s. It's size would slot between the 777-200 and 777-300ER. That would be years down the road.
I guess I don’t understand that United would consider the 777x when they ordered the 787 and has stated the 787 will be the backbone of their international operations. If Boeing makes an ER or an IGW version of a 787…then yes United will be all over it. Besides…they got the 777-300er at a good price and the fleet is quite young and thus gives them time to assess.
I feel like they will eventually got the 777X same with American Airlines. Especially on routes currently used by their 777-300ERs. For American Dallas to London Heathrow for example which Ive flown on a 777-300ER on. For United San Franciso to Frankfurt, London Heathrow for example as well.
I want United to order the 777X especially the 777-9. They can order up to 50 and it will replace the 777-300ers and the long gone 747-400s, they will be based in their biggest hubs such as Newark and San Francisco. It will be really cool to see the folding wingtips painted in the evo blue color scheme. They have orders of 150 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, so with their options of 50 more will be the 777X.
I don't see United operating only the 787 for its widebody fleet. Yeah, they do have multiple hubs, but within this system, certain routes have too much demand, even for the 787-10 to meet. Just look at San Francisco to Hong Kong; this sees two 777-300ERs daily. And that's setting aside the fact that the 787-10 doesn't have the range for it.
United needs the 777-8. SFO has too short of a runway so growth from there will be limited. JFK & EWR has capacity issues. Growth in Denver and Houston would allow Asia and further European areas that the Dreamliner can’t reach. Once the 9 and 8’s are certified and in Production, you can see both United and American purchase the 8’s
call me crazy but i kinda believe the 777x will save boeing. the fact that it got delayed so many times means they are taking every precautionary steps possible
Brit here, well I think this is all game playing, as with the old order for the A350. It's b/s against Boeing for a cheap price. Of course they will buy the 777x BUT at their price.
United wants to rely solely on the 787 series aircraft? I guess American Airlines feels the same. I’m surprised that their 777-300’s won’t be replaced by the similar 777-9. I think that someday that they will regret or will decide to purchase it (777-9) in the future. US airlines are too conservative sometimes. The 787 has its share of delays & problems too.
Don't forget that US carriers are being heldback by the TSA security requirement to pass through immigration, baggage reclaim and re-check-in again for each international transfer(probably won't be waived due to 9/11 fear). So when legacy carrier around the world make ambition on connecting traffic which justify using 777X/A380 for many routes which won't be possible only with local demand, which brings seat cost benefit, US carrier have been stuck only to the demand of local traffic.
I'm surprised how many hard core comments are made, that United will get the 777X. It looks as people are not aware, that a plane suppose to fly in earnings. Earnings is the problem with the 777X. At moment it's projected a load factor of 80% or higher is required to break even and fly in earnings with the 777X. It's also understood, that the premium seats must be sold. The 777X is only an upgraded classic 777. There are efficiency improvements, but the end it's a big, heavy pig compared to the new composite designs like the 787 or the A350. It's no surprise the US carriers avoid the 777X or get the A35K. Should R&R ever get their UltraFan done, and Airbus decides to do the second A350 stretch since an engine for it is finally available, then it's pointless to even look at he outdated 777X. A double stretched A350 will fly circles around a 777X. Only airlines like Emirates, who get their fuel for free at Dubai, will be able to compete with a double stretched A350. All others will operate the 777X at a disadvantage due to the lower fuel requirements of a double stretched A350. Bottom line, it's a prudent decision from US airlines to wait and see or order the more advanced A350.
IF they see the 787 as their top of the line aircraft, United Airlines will ONLY, Sometime buy the 777-8F if they don't put their Oldies to haul freight!
there is no way united will buy 777-9. it is a jumbo jet and will not work for multihub model, as it is too large to fill and expensive to gas. it only works for single hub and spoke model as used by the middle eastern, european, and oriental carriers.
You got two of the biggest airlines in the world fully committing to this, with respect, emirates and now united, to this airframe, please stop comparing the Boeing problems.and the 737, with this airframe, there is a reason why these two MAJOR airlines are choosing this airframe. Enough said.......
On the grounds of expense & size I believe the A350-1000 is a much better prospect for all the US airlines with the added bonus of excellent fuel efficiency. Many airlines already see A350-1000 as the de-facto replacement for their aging B777-300ER`s but it remains to be seen if United or American will follow suit. Delta of course having been operators of A350-900 know the qualities of the aircraft & have ordered 20 with options for another 20 for -1000. I also think this aircraft`s orders will increase quickly very soon so they shouldn`t procastinate for too long & at least follow Delta`s lead. I`m not criticising B777X in anyway, for the airlines that have already ordered it that aircraft should fit very well. Obviously it has the hurdle of EIS to overcome once it`s certification is complete but B777X promises much at the luxury end of the market.
United is the largest US operator of the current 777-200 and 300 variants. They will eventually place late orders for the 777X, but I would venture to guess that they may even wait for the 777-8. They will need to replace the existing 777 planes as they age.
thanks for sharing. I guess United can get 773 used at lower price to help the transition into 778 or 779 once they are a mature product ! the 359 is a back up plan in case Boeing keeps facing challenges with the 77x
If United buy the 777X, then surely it has to happen quickly, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of that happening. Its looking very likely that this aircraft will not go into service with Emirates until 2027/8, and their CEO states that he can't believe any delivery dates offered by Boeing as being meaningful. Unless a United order is obtained by a promise that delivery can leapfrog other airlines waiting in line, they are not going to get this aircraft until the 2030s, even if Boeing lay down more airframes now. And the early 2030s is when Airbus are very likely to announce the A350-2000 / Neo version, which we all know they're working on now, with RR powerplants derived from the UltraFan, and I think that technology will kick sand in the face of Boeing, and the increasingly antiquated 777X. Will United want these 'dinosaurs' then, when Delta will have much more efficient aircraft in their fleet...........?
It isnt all certain yet, they will need to replace their 77W in the long term. The 350 order is used to beat Boeing up and get massive discounts. They should be ordering the 7778x then, but thats around 10 to 15 years later at least. The executives wont say yes as it isnt something that they will live to see happen. But within this short period of time, the 77W still does fine, so it will at least be 10 years till the decision and 10 years till they cancel the 350 order. Delaying a plane for 16 years mean one thing, they are waiting for something else.
I don’t believe United American or Delta will buy 777X it doesn’t fit their business. American got rid of their 747s in the 70s Delta had theirs because of NW. They retired L1011s early sad to say. And United has more hubs do to mergers than when they bought theirs. Delta only got the 350s because they love cheap planes new or old.
It was a warning sign for the A380 that no US airline ever ordered it. It too is for the 777X, at least so far. However, to directly compare both planes is not exactly expedient. The usefulness of both planes is very different. Nevertheless, both planes will have to be filled with passengers in order to be competitive, which sure would be possible on at least some routes for US airlines, but at the cost of connectivity frequency?
United will buy them late just like the 777-300er. They would pay them off easily this way.
Yup, when business starts to slow because everyone who would’ve ordered has already ordered.
United is cautious. They don't need a plane too big with their multiple hubs.
THEY NEED THE 8 THAT IS THEIR SUCCESSOR OKAY?
They could do with a 777-9 from their SFO or EWR hubs for high capacity markets like USA-tokyo, London, Frankfurt, etc

I think it’s a possibility however I think the 777-8 would be a better fit . Who knows if that variant will ever be built and if so, when.
