Hi Polo! Thanks for playing my request. I hope to see you play my Simon and Garfunkel request. Solsbury Hill means a lot of different things to different people. For me it's about my coming of age and my final departure some day when I die. "They've come to take me home." I hope my kids play it for me after I'm gone. Your the best.

Peter and Phil were members of Genesis. Peter was the singer until he left, and then Phil, the drummer, took over the singing.

Peter Gabriel himself told and had explained this later on too, that this was about his move to leave Genesis and the travel he had to make with the music industry and producers.

Hi polo... interesting that you mentioned Phil Collins sound to Peter's voice.
Well Peter was the 1st singer in Genesis...Phil Collins the drummer took very when he left
This song is about how Peter felt when he left Genesis. Great channel...thanks Polo

Solsbury Hill is about getting out of a Psychiatric hospital. Who counter signed the section order to get PG locked in? PC, who then slides into the lead vocals for Genesis. Wanker.

    • @EdwardGregoryNYC
      @EdwardGregoryNYC 3 месяца назад +9

@@paznewis107 Gabriel left Genesis to follow his own muse and also to be more present with his family - his wife had suffered a difficult birth during the recording of "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway," and the band showed some insensitivity towards Peter's need to be there for his wife while also trying to lead the direction of the album. Phil had no intentions of leading the band at that time. They held try-outs for numerous Peter Gabriel replacements - but not made the grade. Phil, having sung back up (and even lead on some songs) had to teach each prospect how to sing the material. Finally, the band members convinced Phil that he should just take on the lead vocals himself, since he was clearly the best choice.
I see nothing in Peter's bio about being in an asylum. Perhaps you're thinking of Syd Barrett.
If you're looking for a song about an asylum, check out Peter's "Lead a Normal Life."

Well according to Peter Gabriel's own words, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go."

I love how quickly you compared Peter to Phil. I think we owe Phil's vocal style to the fact that he developed it by singing backing vocals for Peter, eventually stepping in to fill his spot in Genesis. Peter leaving was (in retrospect) a gift to music lovers. He went 'Big Time' and forced Phil to come out from behind his drums and shine bright.

The first time I heard this song, I was a young adult, in a really dark place. A new mom, completely panicked, so deeply insecure, and utterly afraid. This song reached into my heart, somehow gave me a sliver of peace, and strength. It took me into a frame of mind, where I could feel the hopelessness and despair lift away. The tune , instruments, and beat seemed to say it's going to get to better, I was going to make it, I was going to be OK. To this day, it still does it for me. I was in a local grocery this weekend, when I heard it again, for the first time in long time. I smiled and started singing along, out loud, and I thought even now, in this time of uncertainty and manufactured fear, it grabbed my heart and said, it will be OK. The next thing I thought was , I need to share this Polo! I forgot by the time I got home, but I am so happy someone else tipped you to it. ❤🎉

For a pop song it's in the very unusual time signature of 7/4 time and yet it doesn't feel strange. This is the hit track that really kicked started Gabriel's solo career. A song about a very specific place and event in his own life, yet it has a universal message and appeal. As front man for the band Genesis he had become increasingly frustrated and stifled artistically and longed to do his own thing. The epiphany on a hilltop at seeing a bird flying free gave him the determination to break away from the commercial security of the band and to follow his own artistic instincts. He encapsulates the initial indecision, trepidation and then excitement at telling those in his life he is breaking away from them.

'Genesis's' albums "Selling England by the Pound" from 1973 and "Trick of the Tail" released back in 1976 are musical masterpieces. 🎤🎭🎸🎹🥁🔊🔥☮ The following comment is not related to this song reaction. R.I.P.🙏 to the Atlanta icon and Motown label recording hip hop artist and rapper 'Rich Homie Quan' (Dequantes Lamar) who met his demise earlier today. 😥Rich was only 33 years old going on 34 in early Oct. Sad news and condolences to all his family, friends and fans.💔He was know for his hit singles "Type of Way" and "Flex (OOH, Ooh, Ooh) just to name a couple. I’m so very, very sorry for your loss. I have a nephew that I was very close to when he was young. He was smart, funny, quiet, kind, and had musical inclinations. And then, as he went through puberty, he would sometimes tell me that he felt very strange, like he wasn’t even a real person. And then came the schizophrenia, and now he’s homeless and trapped inside one of the worst mental illnesses imaginable. I miss him and worry about him, but my (born-again Christian) sister has washed her hands of him, which I find absolutely appalling. I think of him a great deal and hope he’s sticking around Santa Cruz, which is a really chill place.

I love Peter Gabriel, this song is takes me back, you should check out another of his songs its called "Biko" Steven Biko was a South African activist during apartheid and was murdered by the SA Police, its the most moving song I've ever heard. Peter always plays it as his last song before he walks off stage, usually makes me cry.

Solsbury Hill is just outside Bath, near Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios - it has an ancient Iron Age hill fort around the top and is a popular spot for walking. The city lights he refers to in the opening are those of Bath itself

Reminds you of Phil Collins? You've got that backwards. Phil Collins learned how to sing from doing backing vocals for Peter Gabriel in early Genesis. This song is from Peter's first solo album after he left Genesis.

Peter Gabriel was Genesis' original lead singer and Phil Collins was the drummer. When Gabriel left, Collins stepped up to the mic, and Genesis got a lot more poppy over time, as indeed did Gabriel. The original Genesis was in the vanguard of early prog rock - their album Trick of the Tale (WELL worth a listen) had some of that prog magic while also being accessible - it was their first album without Gabriel, and Collins did a standout job, which then allowed them to extend their reach.

Gabriel was an original member of Genesis (1967) but Phil Collins and Steve Hackett joined in 1971. Prior to that, Anthony Phillips was the lead guitarist, and Chris Stewart (briefly) and John Silver were the drummers. My grad school roommate was a Genesis freak, and particularly fond of Phillips...

Can't remember the last time I heard this 1977 GEM, LOVE IT, THANK YOU!
I will add this to a playlist, after Dan Fogelberg's awareness of when roads diverge in his song Netherlands, which also came out in 1977 (the year I turned 19, and all of the music of college dorm mates was flooding my tastes and self discovery, The Moody Blues, Boston, Kansas, Styx, Peter Frampton, Hall and Oats... so many!)... For me, Solsbury Hill is a kindred spirit to Netherlands:
    "High on this mountain
    The clouds down below
I'm feeling so strong and alive
    From this rocky perch
    I'll continue to search
    For the wind
    And the snow
    And the sky
    I want a lover
    I want some friends
And I want to live in the sun
And I want to do all the things that I
    never have done.
    Sunny bright mornings
    And pale moonlit nights
    Keep me from feeling alone
    Now, I'm learning to fly
    And this freedom is like
    Nothing that I've ever known
    I've seen the bottom
    And I've been on top
But mostly I've lived in between
    And where do you go
When you get to the end of
    your dream?
    Off in the nether lands
    I heard a sound
Like the beating of heavenly wings
    And deep in my brain
    I can hear a refrain
Of my soul as she rises and sings
    Anthems to glory and
    Anthems to love and
    Hymns filled with early delight
Like the songs that the darkness
    Composes to worship the light.
    Once in a vision
    I came on some woods
And stood at a fork in the road
    My choices were clear
Yet I froze with the fear
Of not knowing which way to go
    One road was simple
    Acceptance of life
The other road offered sweet peace
    When I made my decision
    My vision became my release."

Peter Gabriel's music is a hell of a rabbit hole to go down! Started with Genesis. Went solo and made some good music, was respected and successful but wasn't huge. Then he did the album "So". Great album, with loads of catchy tracks that was hugely successful. Sledgehammer, Red Rain, Big Time were all hits. However, I would recommend In Your Eyes and a duet he did with Kate Bush, Don't Give Up which is very moving. He then went on to make another amazing album called us, with elements of World music coming to the fore.
