I could not agree more about the tragic underuse of Amber Riley on Glee. It felt like her character and vocals were kept in a very specific box on that show. It was only off the show that we got to see the huge range of her talents. Thank you for spotlighting her in this video!
So much so, that I didn't even realize that she had this in her until I started prep work for this video. She's truly something else.

I love Amber Riley too. She had do a lot with this role in The Wiz. Also love her 2017 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in A Musical for playing Effie White in a Dreamgirls, and Audrey 2 in The Pasadena Playhouse production of Little Shop of Horror. At the moment she is focus on her singing with her new EP RILEY .
She was absolutely amazing in Dreamgirls, one of those really great moments in theatre. The whole audience was sobbing when i saw it

I think you should do Alex Newell in Once Upon this Island, or this version of "I know where I've Been" from Glee. Like Amber Riley, I think Alex was not given too many opportunities to shine in Glee

Thank you for discussing this number! Its one that's stayed with me since its airing. Her voice is so incredible and the number is just so much fun. Doesn't get enough credit. Whimsy and power can be deceptively hard to mix and pull off.

Yep, I was blown away! I actually started watching Glee because I wanted to see and hear more of her. I was like who is this girl singing like that?! Stole the show!

Amber is super talented!! Saw her as the Audrey 2 in Little Shop of Horrors and while she was not ever seen onstage, she did an amazing job with the vocals!! She was not used to her fullest on Glee which was a total crime!

She was definitely underused.. it seemed like they tried to bring her back after being gone for season 4 and some of 5 while she was winning Dancing with the stars. After that they bring her back and she sung a lot in season 5 part 2 but where she sung in season 6 it seemed to further the Rachel plot

Great video as usual... she won an Olivier for Dreamgirls and there's a vid of her singing Listen with the young lady who plays Deena. It's great!
The Wiz was the very first Broadway show I saw. 1975. I was 10. It made a lasting impression on my life.

This is such a fun musical and underrated in my opinion. I did this in high school my freshman year (way too long ago lol) and it was so much fun!

You should react to her I Am Telling You performance at the Oliver awards. It fits the musical theatre criteria because there is a bit of acting in the number. The best rendition of the song in my opinion!

I loved that you chose this, Marc -- THE WIZ is just pure joy, and Amber lives up to that here. I loved her on GLEE (before I quit watching the show in the 5th or 6th season, aghghg), and agree that I always felt she was shortchanged. Anyone who knows her work knows she's a fantastic singer, but (as she showed on DWTS), she can really dance, too, and again, GLEE showed very little of this. I love Amber's savvy pacing on the song here -- yes, she goes for some big moments for focus, but she's also generous enough to share those moments with her cast here. Great piece, and great choice!

That was incredible. I hope she gets cast in more things and is up front and center. I remember being super impressed with her on Glee but like you said there were a lot of characters in that show that weren't up front and center all the time. This just proves that she can carry a show stopping number and do it with grace and charm.
This is such a fun channel! As a classically trained singer (mostly opera), watching and hearing critiques and feedback on musical theatre is something I don't get to watch much. Just a completely different vibe. Thanks, Marc!

Watching her brings me so much joy 😍 She's like a fish to water when she's on stage and you can see how much she enjoyes what she does - this jumps over to even the audience on their screens and our feet start to wiggle to the music without us knowing it!

I actually saw him live in Joseph when I was in Grade 3 maybe? If I could find a video of it, I'd be happy to.
That would have been awesome to see him live! They did make a “movie” of his performance, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find. Love watching your videos, even though I can’t sing to save my life, but I can appreciate it in others.

There are 2 videos, a Part 1 & 2, of the same song since there isn’t a complete full version of the tour performance.
I did find one that was almost the full version, that also had good quality, but it has way less views compared to the 2 vids I mentioned cuz it was released way after the those vids were out. It usually stops at Donkey’s solo.
If you want to hear the entire thing however, you would need to click on a video that is just the audio or just click on a bootleg version of the performance. Yr choice. The one with 2 parts and better quality is better tho.

Marc, it's 11:15 in Massachusetts and I just had to watch this video before retiring for the night. I absolutely loved the television version of the THE WIZ. I had seen the original many years ago in NY. Yes, I was very young but I remember Ease on Down the Road. The audience was waiting for this number and they became a part of the show. Some audience members got out of their seats and were dancing in the aisles. WOW! But I digress. My only regret is not being able to talk to you directly about our experiences with this TV version. Marc, you have the ability to draw us into what you are sharing. I just want to sit down and talk to you at length. Thank you so very, very much!
In addition to learning more about you (yes I am still asking) I would so much enjoy a vocal comparison of Patti Lupone and Betty Buckley singing With ONE Look from SUNSET BOULEVARD. I didn't mention Glenn Close because I was not at all impressed with her vocals but...if you feel that she should be included that's OK. You are the pro!
