- As rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan's efforts to send in state police and the National Guard were blocked by the federal government for a full 90 minutes. Now, Hogan - a Republican - is calling for President Trump to resign or be removed from office. Joining these calls is the Lincoln Project, the anti-Trump Republican group formed in 2019. Its co-founder Rick Wilson calls the violence “sedition and insurrection,” and speaks with Hari Sreenivasan about what’s at stake.

It’s so good to know that there are people who value integrity and doing the right thing for society over a political party or simply self interest. The American political system is broken and needs an overhaul and underlying societal issues and ills that have helped to created an environment that allowed this to happen need to be addressed too. I agree the family who lost their loved one need to demand that the people who incited and contributed to this situation need to be held accountable.

Get your fact straight. DC Mayor Bowser quit trying to smash Mario for a few minutes, jk, and wrote a letter asking those who offered policing help to refrain from getting involved in this rally. Thank Mayor Bowser for that. Trump sent the national guard in after announcing that the protestors needed to leave. And no, withholding the national guard is not prosecutable at all.

I was born in DC and I concur.
When I went to public high school in the 1960's you couldn't graduate without taking a full semester class called American Government. It was civics. Everybody in the country back then studied civics. We learned the Constitution, how our representative democracy is set up, the balance of power ... all of it. Today in the United States students are no longer studying it like that. I have never understood why civics was eliminated as a required course for all high school students. Today so many adults don't even understand what the balance of power or our three branches of government are. Education is power. Americans deserve to know their place, their responsibility as citizens in our democracy. And God knows our democracy needs our citizenry to understand it.

I’m 30 and we had to take a class to pass an exam on the Constitution in 8th grade and in 12th grade, we also had American Government as its own course. In college, I also had to take Politics 101 and at least one history class. So honestly, I don’t know where the education gap is for those 45+ year olds. I’m sure that it’s not everyone, but it’s terrifying knowing that the MAGA people simply do not care about our government :(

With that being said, I hope that the incoming administration will make higher education more attainable for everyone. It’s the least we can do to ensure that future generations do not repeat our same mistakes 😔
The balance of power in our government seems to be missing right now. Our constitution was created by the blood and tears of fallen men. Have we not learned anything? How can an authoritarian cult figure overtake our country and his minions? Our forefathers who fought to create and keep democracy would be crying for the America our new generation is witnessing. Nixon wanted the war to continue so that the American people would vote for him instead of his Democratic opponent by championing himself the only man that knew how to end the Vietnam War peacefully and that his Democratic opponent was unqualified to do so. You can watch a segment on the Rachel Maddow Show in which she did a fantastic job at explaining how Nixon killed Johnson's peace treaty with the North Vietnamese.

First time seeing this interviewer. I really appreciate his "old-school" method of asking a short question and then closing his mouth so that the guest can actually speak. Most current talking heads on television spend most of their time giving their own opinions, emoting, and commiserating with co-workers, all of which actually blocks us from learning the news.

By suspending trump on twitter they have retroactively erased years of news and information, any story that referenced a trump tweet by linking to his actual twitter is now partially inaccessible. The vindictiveness of Silicon Valley and FBI, who not only censor the head of state and leader of the opposition during a crisis, but also erase history. Exactly! What we experienced this week is the cost of ignorance. Our system of education (along with many others) needs a complete overhaul. Do away with the industrial model of education. Honestly, I think I am smarter now than since I left college because I have continued my interest in the world. I have kept up with world affairs via sources like NPR, AP, Reuters ... and not limited myself to one news source. Thankfully, the internet allows me to fact check assertions and news that I get frowny over. I have NEVER ceased an interest in history and politics, reading biographies and analytic books.
The problem is that people go through the public/private/charter/homeschool systems, then come to a screeching halt once they have enough education to get a job. You do that, and your mind begins to fossilize at that point. It freezes up, begins to refuse to accept new input, and is no longer capable of analysis. Exercising one's mind is a lifelong process or it becomes decrepit, just like an aging body.
It has nothing to do with education. It has to do with the hate and anger these terrorists were taught at home from a very early age.

These 2 men, along with other outspoken former Republicans who are part of the Lincoln Project, recognized early on that Trump was a clear and present danger and relentlessly bombarded him with brilliant ads that got under Trump's skin and damaged his brand. They were instrumental in helping us defeat him, and their show still gives me hope and keeps me sane during these dark days. I suspect people didn't want to believe it would become this. Had there been a larger police presence, had the National Guard lined every barricade and covered the steps to the Capitol, maybe these cultists would have realized how severe this was, not just a frolic with the release of breaking glass and entering buildings they had no right to enter at that time... Maybe it would have been different. No rubber bullets. No clouds of tear gas until late in the day. Few arrests. Posing for selfies and waving people through sometimes... This was a debacle that was ignored or underplayed while it was forming, and was treated like a kids outing on the day by some. It should have been taken more seriously.

I was surprised by the president's actions! Obviously keeping a president after he's lost the election is archaic. When the current president loses the election he should have one or two days. #45 was unstable when he started, it doesn't make sense to give an unstable president all this time to melt down. Obviously you cannot depend on his cabinet to remove him as they should have back in the beginning when he displayed tactics that were against US interests.
