Unsafe Campsite for Us / Had to Leave / Oreville Campground Custer, SD / Freedom Hauler Problem Too

  • Of the 25 campgrounds we stayed in on our Western Trip, this was the only one in which we had a problem such that we felt unsafe and had to leave. In the over 200 campsites we have stayed in over many years, we have only had a few issues, but this is the first one where we left.
    Oreville Campground is a nice USACE campground in Custer, SD, but once we got there, we discovered it wasn't going to be safe for us in our reserved campsite. So we had to leave and try and find a place to stay in the middle of the summer tourist season in South Dakota in the Black Hills. Then the Freedom Hauler tote decides to act up and we can't back up properly, causing us a lot of frustration.

      I used to tent camp. Then I began having trouble kneeling down and crawling into the tent. So I bought a cute little tent trailer, a Sylvansport GO. Camped in that for several years, until I began having problems with cranking it up (tent is in the hard roof). So this year I got a self-contained travel trailer. It is what it is. I tent camped ate Orville back in 2016. I get my federal owned campsites at 50%, because I am a disabled veteran.

Too stressful wondering if you could fit into half of the campgrounds in this country. 95% of the time the people working in the office don’t even know what type of rig it is or if it will fit. We now have an Ford F450 with an Arctic Fox truck camper and pull our SMART car behind that for out-of-the-way places and use our fifth wheel camper for wintering in Florida. To travel freely to have fun, go small and enjoy talk to the ones been there done it you name it, all over. It's like this, do you want to be around a person is always negative. I don't want to have big rid to whole me down and limited. Look it takes money to get a camp property to be develop people don't have all that money to build camp site will accommodate big rigs back in the days. What changing the people the demand on big rigs put the infrastructure on camp place is not there for big rigs. You find them only in different locations. Like this Biden wants us to drive Electric cars the infrastructure of charging cars not their. So why buy electric cars.

    Here they'd call that a "hiker/bicycle" camp area and add a bunch more sites but only charging like 5 bucks a night for each. What you're showing looks more like rest area overnighting, which is also valid (and free); when the main truck area is full you'll see semi trucks staged along the exit/entrance and they'll walk in for coffee (many here have volunteers with coffeepots) and bathrooms.
    At any price that was unreasonable accommodations for your use case. If you were on motorcycles you'd been golden - 12 bucks for a site with few people parked and partying near you is not too shabby at all

    Probably hindsight could you have unhooked the tote and gotten far enough over? Curious about how those totes work. I’ve driven truck for many years, but never doubles so I’m unfamiliar with how the air and electrical work with the unit when backing. Is your rig an automatic? We have a43’ 5th wheel and figured an f450 will be a good vehicle although I have thought about pulling with a big rig, figured we’d be too long to get around and enjoy our travels. ✌

    • @WattsOnWheels
      @WattsOnWheels  8 месяцев назад

      Unhooking and re-hooking the tote is a pain. We found out we had pinched wires that was making the tote not work periodically. Since the tote is connected to the RV at 2 points, it is considered an extension of the RV, thus not pulling doubles. Yes our truck has i-shift. F450 is pretty heavy duty. We choose the HDT for safety, especially out in the mountains and the fact that we spend most of our time traveling.

    Hi guys. At what point (if any) did you realize you went up the wrong way thru a pull thru campsite ( at 4.15 minutes into your video) when you were finding your site? You stopped at that point, and then proceeded thru the pull thru. Based on the camp host's directions, if you proceeded to the right, you would have found your campsite on your right side. I see this at that spot where you had to turn around and was confronted by another camper. It appears that if you continued to the right at 4.15 minutes into the video, then you would have found yourself at the same spot you eventually turned around at - although you would have been facing/going in the right direction.
    I apologize if I am incorrect due to something I do not see in the video. But, the camp host seemed to be very specific in her instructions, and it is what I also observed in your video. I hope you were not so critical on the review of the camp host in error.
    I love watching your videos, and please keep them coming.

    • @WattsOnWheels
      @WattsOnWheels  9 месяцев назад +1

      At 4:15, that was a center road for other campsites. We followed the Hosts instructions. We didn't show that road in the video, however, if we would have turned there we would have had to make a very tight hair pin turn at the end to the left to get to site 14 on the right and there would have been absolutely no room to make that turn. Also at 4:15 there was a sign indicating to continue like we did to #14. We left favorable comments for the park but mentioned it was not the best choice for big rigs.

  • @Smokeysmom1
    @Smokeysmom1 8 месяцев назад +2

    I guess you already expect with that huge set up, this is going to happen more often than not. Since you are the size of a big rig, I would think you would choose truck stops, but as you said, you do it because you can.

    • @WattsOnWheels
      @WattsOnWheels  8 месяцев назад +1

      Truck stops are not for camping, they are for refueling or emergency stops. I could not imagine putting out a grill, awning and chairs at a truck stop when you have about 4 feet between each other. Not to mention the noise. They are for commercial businesses and for a one night stay. We wouldn't recommend a truck stop to any RVer unless it's just for a quick over night stay. Of the over 200 campsites we have stayed at, this is the first one we had to leave, but it all worked out for the best.
