It's amazing how, when someone tries to inform us about a topic, instead of being grateful and taking it with a grain of salt, we find a way to tear it apart. Let's choose our battles carefully. Not everything needs to be a fight. Life is hard as it is. Choose love, not hate.
Even in states where it is legal to drive with the Propane on, it is probably illegal to refuel the gasoline or diesel tank on the coach or tow vehicle with the propane on.
As to the propane question. If you are in an accident and your propane is off, and if the accident is pretty bad, it makes no difference; on or off a bad thing could happen. When filling up with fuel it might be wise to make sure a pilot light is out. My frig in my old rig ran on propane but I turned the pilot off when I fueled up but I didn't turn off the tanks. I have a 12 volt frig in my new trailer. I try and turn off the tanks when I am on the road when I remember it. But I have never been cautioned about having my tank valves open. I have driven through the Eisenhour Tunnel many times with tanks on and I don't remember seeing any warning signs. I have also driven through New York and Conanicut and don't remember seeing any warning signs about this subject. I will need to have someone research this in detail.
You should cross your chains, however it is not to make a cradle for the trailer lol. The fact is that they will hardly ever catch the trailer and keep it off the ground. Crossing the chains does help with turning tightly. You can confirm this by using a tape measure and see how much more it gives you without binding up. Of course as with all things, that only works with property mounted chains. The ones that are connected to the trailer at a single point is one not property mounted and two will not hold as much weight in thr event the trailer does come disconnected going down the road.
Due to my travel trailer it has safety cables instead of chains and due to the hitch i use their is no way i can cross the safety cables and they are very tough cables as well i own a trailmanor travel trailer which has two different sizes its 20 feet when i am towing and 27 feet when i am at the camp ground i always leave my propane off until i am unhooked from the tow vehicle
In CA If the combined GVWR of Truck and bumper pull is over 25K # you need a non commercial Class A drivers license the limit for 5th wheels is higher.
Also from Iowa. Check those state codes about trailer brakes. I bought a teardrop that came with electric brakes and found out that our two tow vehicles needed to have the equipment to use the brakes installed. Came as news to me while hauling a trailer with an empty weight of 1,900 pounds.
I drive with my propane on. There are many commercial trucks that run on propane. They drive with their propane on or they don’t drive. Why is it ok for them?
@@thebaldeagle655 Here is a short list of some states with 55mph speed limits when towing: Michigan, Ohio, S. Carolina, Illinois, Mississippi and there are more. The question is will they be enforced, well that depends on the state and the officer on duty.
I live in Burnaby, BC, Canada (Vancouver area) & it's illegal to park any trailer on the street between 2am-6am. No one at city hall can explain why this by-law exists or who made it & when. It cost me $60 to find this out. Also a trailer must be properly & legally hooked up to a suitable tow vehicle at all times it's on public streets. Check your local by-laws about parking on the streets.
We trave; twice a year between Michigan and Florida. Our fridge/freezer is pronpane powered or AC powered. The propane stays on. I'll just avoid New England and the north East Coast....not that I would go there anyway.
Corp of engineers camp grounds are all no alcohol. They have zero tolerance on it. We watched a rig get impounded a few years ago because the people were drinking beer.
Our fridge/freezer combo keeps stuff frozen with no power or propane. We did a 4 hour trip and everything was still frozen solid. I put as many ice packs as I could stuff in there and stuff kept cold. We have the 2 door Dometic shore power/propane, so nothing fancy.
We have a refrigerator like this as well. We always turn on our frig the day before we leave. I always bring ice packs for our day trips for coolers We bring a ICECO frig if we have hookups, and use that for our drinks. It saves a lot of room in our refrigerator. We keep it in the truck on travel days, then move it in the camper. It's nice to have cold drinks on the road, and spend less at gas stations.

Propane... We have found our fridge will stay good including freezer for most days we drive. We don't go over 350 miles in a given day for our own reasons and we are good without Propane on during the drive...well, except when I forget. But even I don't like that.
most new trailers have a single anchor point for safety chains now. Crossing them is pointless. They should have stuck with the 2 anchor points. I agree propane needs shut off, if you get in an accident, propane lines, hard or rubber can and will break/puncture and you have a deadly propane leak. Nothing to stop it from just emptying the tank on you. Which is why vehicles have fuel cutoffs so they don't "generally" keep pumping fuel out after taking a hit.
I have utilities trailer that have a single point but they have very little hitch weight. Almost any tandem travel trailer will have a pretty hefty hitch weight and should have dual points and should be crossed. I would not advise any one to buy a travel trailer with just one point.
@@stephenjones219 you haven't looked at new tandem travel trailers lately than. Because every Jayco, Springdale. Forest River product is exactly 1 anchor point. Just sold a 30 ft 9k dry weight toy hauler from salem with 1 anchor point for the safety chains. So maybe you should advise the manufacturers.
@@skelafeti Yes, I realize that now so I will have to back up on my advise. I have just bought a new tandem and it has one anchor point. When I realized it I was disappointed, but found out that all the new one do so there you go. Gotta take what they build.
Agree. I'm the first to admit I'm only 95% honest. I'm not sweating small shit like sneaking a beer into a campground, or bringing in my own firewood. Those signs about spreading invasive species is just so it makes you buy their overpriced wood. I always bring my own.
The brand new Keystone Springdale I bought doesn't give you the option to cross the chains. Thought that was kind of unusual for such a reputable brand. I guess they lined up with those who are saying it's a myth. Doesn't really matter to me.
Class A motorhome weighing in at 10-12 thousand pounds? That is a very small MH. My rig weighs 38,000 pounds and yes you differently need to know your weight and road weight restrictions.
I drive with the propane on every time. But i wont do it again. I guess i figured its dangerous either way and didn't consider it much after that. Appreciate ya
Great video, thanks but a Class A motor home along with a Super C motor home can weigh up to 45K lbs or more. Yes, you do have to do your homework when driving those things on secondary highways.
I don’t understand why people are so paranoid about driving for a couple hours with the propane off. Your food won’t spoil as long as you don’t open the fridge, and you turn it back on when you get where you’re going. It’s just common sense to err on the side of safety first.
I'v had two travel trailers, both with three ways to power them. Propane, 12v or 110ac. So when you're on the road save your propane and use 12v from the battery.
When it's 90+ outside, and you are driving 8 to 11 hours, it stays on. Many people now are having to drive with their generators on the whole driving trip. Those twin door residential destination refrigerators require gasoline to keep them staying cool during long travel days and nights. The RV dealerships don't even know the KW per hour those destination refrigerators need. A couple of panels and batteries doesn't cut it in the real world. Either is spending a few grand to add solar/batteries, which can add tremendous weight, and take away from your cargo capacity. Not everyone goes to campground all the time.
Crossing chains on all 3 of my trailers don't do a damn bit of good. Due to the hitch design on the truck and the tongue on the trailers, all it would do is allow the tongue to fall to the pavement pinning the chains between the tongue and the trailer. Then all that would happen is a chains would grind away until they are cut completely through detatching the trailer from the chains.
Wow. California less restrictive on much of this. Walmart parking varies from cities and counties, Bass Pro as well. Just call them and ask. (If you’re not driving a POS ((piece of shit)) most local cops won’t care but it’s probably a haven for homeless so beware). The CHP is almost non-existent in CA any more (long story). Just don’t stand out. I’m currently in Michigan on the UP. Northern California and some Central California have many beautiful destinations. I’m retired LE and trust me when I say, if you get pulled over and have a drivers license, registrations, and proof of insurance, most cops are impressed because most can’t do this. (Maybe a warning). Just don’t draw attention to yourself’s and you will be fine. Oh, BTW, stay far away from the Bay Area and the greater LA (not Louisiana) I’m talking Los Angeles) and you will be fine. You just might need a few extra dollars for fuel. Lots of boondocking & BLM land. Happy & safe travels ya’ll!!!

NORMALLY... By the time you add water, food, and clothing you are overweight. That's because the axels are not correct for most RVs once loaded. Always know your weight is a good thing. I've found most truck stops are acceptable of travel trailers parking overnight. They understand like truckers they are limited in where they can park for rest. Always ask the cashier and make sure you get their name.
90% plus of rv/trailers I full with propane are driving with the tank or main value open.☠️ so think about that next time you're cruising down the highway next to a RV or a trailer. I watched this video after your 2nd one. Here is one you may not know. This is a way bigger fine and jail time than all your two videos combined. It is illegal to transport any of those one time use, refilled by you, propane tanks. So, no refilling and taking on your trip. This is what it might say on the canister. viii) With one of the following statements: (A) For cylinders manufactured prior to October 1, 1996: “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $25,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 1809)” or “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124).” (B) For cylinders manufactured on or after October 1, 1996: “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124). Update to that law is, If someone dies from a refilled being transported cylinder, the jail time is 10 years. Please note that law says “up to” on the fines and not on jail times. Those are mandatory.

It's not actually law in most atates that your propane be turned off. I rarely do even though i dont really need it on. Tanks are equipped with anti tip safety devices, and will not explode even if impacted, contrary to what movies teach.

Some of the trucking laws are really stupid and/or questionable. We all see the so called hot shots, the typically dialog pickup trucks pulling trailers with all kinds of loads. Well if the truck has its bed on it, then it’s a truck, but if it’s not on, then it becomes a tractor, and can legally carry much more weight. I realize people can add freight to the bed, but does taking the bed off really change how much weight it can handle drastically? I say no
Who's checking for crisscrossed chains? Who's weighing your trailer? Checking whether you're propane is on? I know a woman who's never even had her trailer inspected. Never had an issue. Not saying its right but don't make it appear that there are authorities out there looking for un crossed chains or travelers who left their propane turned on. It's simply not happening. The cop who does that must not have anything better to do.

Whereabouts?
I dumped my tank on used rv was disgusted to see shit. Never used my tanks again been camping 8 months no bathroom no oroblem
Actually many RV parks have this rule. We also just in case carry a spare sewer cap.
It's amazing how, when someone tries to inform us about a topic, instead of being grateful and taking it with a grain of salt, we find a way to tear it apart. Let's choose our battles carefully. Not everything needs to be a fight. Life is hard as it is. Choose love, not hate.
It’s amazing people are willing to roll over and accept it.
Not accepting honey. I'm taking the high road and choosing my battles. This way, I sleep well at night. God bless

Even in states where it is legal to drive with the Propane on, it is probably illegal to refuel the gasoline or diesel tank on the coach or tow vehicle with the propane on.
I agree completely! Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for part 2
My understanding is any highway in NJ plus multiple bridges, tunnels, and cities in the north east. Good point when fueling up as well
You should cross your chains, however it is not to make a cradle for the trailer lol.
Hmmm didn’t know that. Here in NY is says to cross them to catch the coupler. Good to know. Thanks for watching!
crossing has saved me many a problem - on mtn roads its SMART
Due to my travel trailer it has safety cables instead of chains and due to the hitch i use their is no way i can cross the safety cables and they are very tough cables as well i own a trailmanor travel trailer which has two different sizes its 20 feet when i am towing and 27 feet when i am at the camp ground i always leave my propane off until i am unhooked from the tow vehicle
We can’t cross ours either due to coming from the same point.
Great tips! I have the Valtera gate valve at the end of my pipe. Thought that was enough, but I guess a cap certainly can't hurt.
You might be good🤷♂️
In CA If the combined GVWR of Truck and bumper pull is over 25K # you need a non commercial Class A drivers license the limit for 5th wheels is higher.
Good to know👍🏼
I believe you need a non commercial class a for conventional tow(bumper pull) over 10k weight of trailer and 15k for 5th wheel weight
Iowa has a law you need anti sway Bars for anything over 3000 pounds. I won't travel without it
No kidding? I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info, thanks for watching 👍
Also from Iowa. Check those state codes about trailer brakes. I bought a teardrop that came with electric brakes and found out that our two tow vehicles needed to have the equipment to use the brakes installed. Came as news to me while hauling a trailer with an empty weight of 1,900 pounds.
For Iowa residents...
I believe you mean weight distribution bars not anti sway. They are 2 different systems
FL State Parks allow alcohol at your site only.
Hmmm. Never knew that. Thanks for watching!
I drive with my propane on. There are many commercial trucks that run on propane. They drive with their propane on or they don’t drive. Why is it ok for them?

In several states it is illegal to drive over 55mph when towing a trailer.
California. If you have three axles or more, it's 55 mph. So, any trailer. Motorhome with a tag axle? 55 mph.
Very true!
Besides California what other states require the 55 MPH for trailers?
Not several. California and California only has split speed limits.
Good point👍
We trave; twice a year between Michigan and Florida. Our fridge/freezer is pronpane powered or AC powered. The propane stays on. I'll just avoid New England and the north East Coast....not that I would go there anyway.

Yes there are sign everywhere. You'll get stuck and can't make the turns if your to big. The signs always say from kingpin to front axle
Very funny presentation! (Good information also.) Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Our fridge/freezer combo keeps stuff frozen with no power or propane. We did a 4 hour trip and everything was still frozen solid. I put as many ice packs as I could stuff in there and stuff kept cold. We have the 2 door Dometic shore power/propane, so nothing fancy.
Nice👍That’s certainly not a bad setup
Thanks for the info. I think my fridge is the same kind. I'll have to try this on my next trip!
I rotate the ice packs between a cooler and the freezer while camping. Saves on ice for frosty beverages
Remember road restrictions for length/weight / axle for the two lane rds.
Very true!
Moral of the story... stay out of New York. 😂

use to drive semis and if no other trucks were parked i would go in to ask to park and never was turned away for over night or shopping, went to deliver at a giant mall in texas in a town with no truck parking amd security came and told me to leave with my 5 am delivery time told them to shove it cop showed up told him i was to deliver at K B Toys he said have a nice night then at 430 when i got up 2 security cars one on each side of my truck they left as i came out of the can

Propane... We have found our fridge will stay good including freezer for most days we drive. We don't go over 350 miles in a given day for our own reasons and we are good without Propane on during the drive...well, except when I forget. But even I don't like that.
Good point👍
most new trailers have a single anchor point for safety chains now.

Class A motorhome weighing in at 10-12 thousand pounds? That is a very small MH. My rig weighs 38,000 pounds and yes you differently need to know your weight and road weight restrictions.

Some tunnels will not let you travel through them if you have a propane tank on your rig.
Very true!
How will the tunnel know you have propane? 😂
I don’t understand why people are so paranoid about driving for a couple hours with the propane off. Your food won’t spoil as long as you don’t open the fridge, and you turn it back on when you get where you’re going. It’s just common sense to err on the side of safety first.
Totally agree! Thanks for watching
And don't they have to be level to work properly anyway?

I meant class c but didn’t catch it in editing. Rookie mistake 😂
I was very curious about the weights when mentioned
NJ requires anyone towing a trailer to have three break down triangles or flares in the vehicle.
Good point. I believe it’s more than NJ
Our chains are the same way
Thanks

The other problem with overloading your trailer is that if you have an accident, your insurance won't pay.
Good point 👍
This is total misinformation. That's like saying if you are going 56 in a 55 and have a wreck your insurance won't pay.
Driving a motorhome over 26,000 pounds without non commercial Class B driver’s licenses if you are a Texas resident.

And air brake cert if it has air brakes

90% plus of rv/trailers I full with propane are driving with the tank or main value open.☠️ so think about that next time you're cruising down the highway next to a RV or a trailer. If you try to inform these people in the most polite way possible they just look at you and say I've been doing this and haven't had problems. i have one and it's been wrong on so many times
I watched this video after your 2nd one. Here is one you may not know. This is a way bigger fine and jail time than all your two videos combined.
It is illegal to transport any of those one time use, refilled by you, propane tanks. So, no refilling and taking on your trip. This is what it might say on the canister.
viii) With one of the following statements:
(A) For cylinders manufactured prior to October 1, 1996: “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $25,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 1809)” or “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124).”
(B) For cylinders manufactured on or after October 1, 1996: “Federal law forbids transportation if refilled-penalty up to $500,000 fine and 5 years imprisonment (49 U.S.C. 5124).
Update to that law is, If someone dies from a refilled being transported cylinder, the jail time is 10 years.
Please note that law says “up to” on the fines and not on jail times. Those are mandatory.
Great point 👍 Thanks for watching!

I say no
I say no as well
Who's checking for crisscrossed chains? Who's weighing your trailer? Checking whether you're propane is on?
I know a woman who's never even had her trailer inspected. Never had an issue. Not saying its right but don't make it appear that there are authorities out there looking for un crossed chains or travelers who left their propane turned on. It's simply not happening. The cop who does that must not have anything better to do.
Probably right. Don’t think many are checking
No ones checking but when there's an accident get pulled over for speeding or a taillight out etc is when it all comes crashing down literally
NO LAW about safety chains being crossed. Matter of fact it doesn't do what you think it does
