The Ecstasy of Gold (Italian: L'estasi dell'oro) is a musical composition by Ennio Morricone, part of his score for the Sergio Leone film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. It is played while Tuco (Eli Wallach) is frantically searching a cemetery for the grave that holds $200,000 in gold coins. Originally sung by Edda Dell'Orso, it stands as one of the most well-known of Morricone's themes.
WOW, think there are dumb people who have never seen that film, or heard the out standing score…? Well yeah, could be. It's got to be the best western ever made. Pure genius. The film reveals Tuco finding the grave yard in a very clever way. But... this is a huge cemetery… enormous… perhaps reflecting all the death of the civil war - the bloodiest war America fought.Tuco runs searching, but the grave yard seems to go on forever. Like a land of death. And THIS MUSIC starts… As the music builds Tuco runs faster… the camera swings faster and faster till it's just a psychedelic blur of graves into just color… Tuco running and running… really REALLY powerful story telling. The like of which you do not find any more.
And thats not even the best part!
There is the THREE WAY GUNFIGHT in this huge cemetery! Amazing. Brilliant. Perfect story telling

If it's foolish to worship the only real Divinity on this planet, then 'Yes,' we are fools. The magical phenomena known as *Woman* is the only real source of the Divine in this universe and her singing is the sound of a Goddess in communion with us mere mortals. Women are the closest things to a God/ Gods that exist (and coincidentally, they can also be the closest thing to a demon/ demons that exist, depends on the woman, really).
Thus it's entirely reasonable for us to be deeply moved and indeed enraptured by the Divine Magic she's (vocally) weaving for us here.
Definitely a fool for worrying at all. Don't worry.

Just kidding, of course, but that song WAS the first thing to pop into my mind upon hearing that phrase. Though I'd guess younger generations might have no idea/ no exposure to such randomly obscure 'oldies' (the irony here being that The Ecstasy Of Gold is some 30 years older)...

When you score a transition scene for a low budget Western, and decades later it's a favorite of philharmonic orchestras, opera singers, heavy metal bands, and cutting edge animators... Legendary.
This is one of my favourite pieces and I've heard it sung by various artists and no one comes even close to Susanna. Listen to this every morning and you'll be ready to take on anything.
Ennio Morricone wrote the most powerful and exciting music for cinema of all times, which takes the audience into his captivity. Films, the music to which was composed by Ennio Morricone, at least half of success owe to him.
"The Ecstasy of Gold" is in my opinion no doubt the best soundtrack for a film in the history of cinema! Because of this music piece you get the goosebumps. Thanks!

From someone who generally prefers exclusively instrumental music -- this is an incredibly powerful piece, and the vocal is absolutely the driving force behind it. I've loved this music for literally more than 50 years. Even better than the film's main title, which is itself iconic. Bravo Signor Morricone and Signorina Rigacci.
Ms. Rigacci's voice is her instrument. No actual words were necessary.
Speechless, it doesn't get any better than this. The combination of voices and instruments is overwhelming, and yet there are no words. Everybody in the world should hear this most beautiful masterpiece. The melody is so strong as well as her voice which fits it so perfectly. So thanks to everyone in this performance, most outstanding.

It doesn't get better than this. I love Susanna's voice but more than that you can see that she really enjoys singing this piece. In some renditions the orchestra overwhelms the vocalist but not Susanna. When I watched the movie many years ago I didn't fully appreciate the genius of Ennio Morricone. Would the film have been as good without his soundtrack? I highly doubt it. The orchestration is top notch and I especially enjoy the singing. This song is meant to be cranked to high volume with rich bass and strong treble. It's hard for me to pick up my iPad without playing this video. I wish I could buy the entire concert. Thank you.
Sergio Leone always made great movies but one cant deny that what really made then special and gave them that "westerish" feel was Ennio and his music. Great compositor and Susanna is a really terrific soprano.

I think he used the trumpets very well, more of the Spanish or Mexican sound. Using "oddball" instruments set his film scores apart, he was never afraid to try an otherwise overlooked instrument. A good example is the harmonica in Once upon a time in the west. So many examples, too many to ponder. Great composer meets Great Director and we win!
'Would the film have been as good without his soundtrack?' Just watch Eli Wallach running around that cemetery without this music - or maybe the Benny Hill theme tune - it's just not the same. It was a true cinematic masterpiece, but it leaned heavily on the soundtrack. But there's nothing wrong with that...
Benny Hill' s theme would only have worked if Eli Wallach was chasing girls around the cemetery. : )

OMG The power and energy behind Susanna's voice along with the power of the French Horns (as well as the other instruments and the amazing chorus, compliments it all) is to die for. Talk about multiple eargasms, major goose bumps, chills et all. I thought I died and gone to heaven. Amazing Susanna Rigacci along with the great musicians (a superb unbelievable symphonic orchestra) conducted by the genius composer Maestro Ennio, are the key ingredients that made this magical moment happen. I wish that I was there. This is a once in a lifetime dream.

Modern time? He is the greatest Italian composer of all time, far better than Verdi, Vivaldi, Puccini etc..all the old composers are ridiculously overrated just because they were the first.

OH MY GOODNESS, that was absolutely FLAWLESS and I so wish I could have been there. When I was in the Boy Scouts of America 40 years ago at a camp called Ravens Knob in North Carolina, they would always play this song every Wednesday night throughout the summer when there were certain Scouts being tapped in or chosen to enter an elite group within the BSA called the "Order Of The Arrow" but the thing that made this event sooooo uniquely beautiful was that Indians would suddenly appear walking out of the woods holding torches while simultaneously several canoes full of Indians seemingly would come out of nowhere with pretty little lights on the canoes would approach the arena from the lake in front of us and also at the top of the mountain which was on the other side of the lake; there were more Indians with a camp fire burning. This all happened under the cover of darkness which made the spectacle absolutely STUNNINGLY AWESOME and I just wished the entire nation could have witnessed those special ceremonies as the song Ecstacy Of Gold was truly the perfect soundtrack.

Rarely do five things merge, great actors like Eastwood and Wallach, excellent acting, a great plot, great photography and great theme music. When they do you get a movie like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and a scene unflinchingly permanent in history as time moves by. Listening to this great music Ennio wrote brings back many happy days. Only John Williams can match the quality of Ennio's music. So it is, that they sit together as would greats like Mozart and Beethoven, Napoleon and Caesar, Abbot and Costello, Kermit and Miss Piggy. : >
Hans Zimmer is pretty damn special, too! The Vangelis soundtrack in Bladreunner is deeply moving/ uplifting/ affecting.
I don't think it's entirely fair to exclude such Wizards of Sound Magic (as well as those others not mentioned here).
