- This Toro LX 420 has been "fixed" by someone else. In this video I try to make it functional again. I get close, but it needs a few more parts and adjustments.
The belt for this mower is 1/2 inch by 109 inches, and the Toro Part number is 112-5800, but if you buy it from Toro, the belt will cost over $50. I bought this belt on Ebay and it cost $11.66 including tax and shipping.
Here is a link to the best price I could find on Amazon:

The belt keeper bracket on the front crank pulley has a tightened down bolt holding the bracket in place , yes you can pop the pin out of the frame and move it so you can install the belt ,, but ,, you need to tighten the bolt back up ,,, loosen first before popping that pin out ! The belt is 1/2 x 109 Kevlar material ! The pulley covers keep the belt from coming off when disengaged !
Omg that kitten melts my little small engine mechanic heart ❤💙💜💖
Mine too
Absolute biggest belt/performance issue with TORO mowers of this vintage is that it's extremely difficult to find the correct aftermarket spindles with the CORRECT 6.3" diameter pulleys (Toro OEM). Most of the aftermarket "OEM" products range from 5.5" to 6.1" diameter spindle pulleys. The cheapest and most often bought size is 5.5" which translates into just over 2" of belt slack...YIKES! Also, with an additional .4" of belt clearance under the spindle shroud belt keepers--you'll enjoy countless belt-drops, mangles, and useless cutting torque. Optionally, a 106" and up to 109" belt would do in a pinch but your messing with the engineered pivot forces and efficiency slopes with using smaller pulleys. Food for thought....Keep your pulleys from your old spindles to swap or buy the discontinued and now expensive TORO OEM part. You could likely get away with the 6.1" aftermarket variants but not likely to have much brush or lowered deck cutting power.
Interesting! Previous owner replaced the pulleys. It hadn't occurred to me that the may have used the wrong size. I will have to look into that. Thanks!
I have same mower and had same issue too since over two years. Spindles running slow at lower height. Problem solved on replacing PTO cable. Visually old PTO cable looked fine however still it was the root cause. Additionally I added greese too in the spindles. There is significant confusion as bearings are sealed and so many RUclipsrs suggesting greese is not required but it made significant difference to speed of blades and how deck sounds while running.
Well, that was a new 109" belt in the video. I have also tried a 107", which worked great for an hour, and then shredded itself. Might try 108".
@@TheFixitShed I suggest to stay with standard 109 inch belt. Put guards around pulleys. Use greese gun to nicely fill greese inside spindles. Replace PTO cable. With everything will start working as it should.
I know I've commented on the loose belt, but can't find them to add this: I noticed a smell of the belt rubbing on something upon using a smaller belt (108x1/2 works perfectly), but found the brake that stops the blades is rubbing on the belt when I disengage the deck. Other than that the 108 works fine.
Yeah, I think I am going to order one. I tried a new 109" belt, and you saw how that worked. I tried a 107" and it didn't slip, but shredded after an hour of use. I am guessing it was too tight. 108" might be ther answer. Worth a try. Thanks
Really great video, it really helped me. God Bless for your care and love of the critters. Barney (my rescue Goldendoodle) says thank you as well.
Thanks, Glad it helped! Barney is super cute.
I really appreciate the vid, I also have this same mower and the belt came apart on me while mowing yesterday!
Glad I could help!
If you Google the word Crap, a picture of this Toro rider will pop up
Adjust the deck so that the rod in front doesn’t hold the deck too far fwd and make sure the pto cable isn’t stretched too far
Yes! The rod in the front has a piece of PVC pipe on it to shorten it. It wouldn't surprise me if that is the issue. Someone was really tinkering around with this deck. Now, I just need time to work on it....
@@TheFixitShed do you have the parts lisr and numbers?
I just checked, and they do line up with the holes on the deck. I bought them from Jack's Small Engines. Part number 1120630 $17.14 each.
I changed the deck belt on Toro lx420 but it’s loose and I don’t know what to do !!
Need some HELP please !!
If you watched my video, you know everything that I do. If you come up with a solution, please post here. I may just end up getting a shorter belt.
My mower is doing the same exact thing after I replaced the belt. Have you figured it out yet? I have adjusted the hanger that holds the front of the deck up and it seems to change at what level the blades won’t spin.
Adjusting the hanger in the front is really just for leveling the deck and my have small effect on tensioning the belt, but as you discovered, isn't really the answer here. A couple viewers have suggested a video by Taryl fixes all, but I haven't found the right one yet.
Where can i find a new deck my old one just broke
Not sure where you can get a new one. You might be able to find a decent used one on CarigsList or Facebook marketplace. Check with your local small engine repair shop. They might be able to help you track one down.
I have exactly same model mower, order 1/2 × 106" it will instantly solve your problem
I have a 107" belt that seems to do the trick, but it is rubbing on a vertical piece and wearing out the belt quickly. One of the little brackets is a little bent, and I think that is why it is rubbing. I have to get back to this one and finish it up.
Blade engage spring might not be tight enough, I think “Taryl fixes all” has a video on how to shorten the spring
One of the areas I intend to look at as soon as I can get back to it. Too many fires (metaphorical) to fight at the moment. Thanks, I will check out his video.
Hey thanks i originally had to pull the transmission that opened up a can of worms my tranny was a whyner come to find out no grease.. got it going now I'm dealing with the pulley you showed on mower deck mine is so seized it took a sledge and bar.just to open it a few inches I was sending you money yesterday and that's first for me sending money here Google hijacked my account # I will try again it's unreal how seized up this bracket is I'm going now to work on it...I've got 3 matching bolts rusty probably from underneath don't know where they go when you get old you loose a lot of your senses it sux I'm still a half ass good mechanic and I need to look at your Kohler vtwin Massey Ferguson and 9hp out boards.. reason being you have shown stuff that I've missed thanks Dwayne
Great video, great message!
Thanks!
The spring in the tensoir cable if you heat it up an bend where you take up about quarter inch then put it back together will fix look tayl channel on you tube where I saw it works
Thanks for the comment! Someone else had mentioned the Taryl video a while ago, but I wasn't able to find it. I'll have to check again. Thanks!
Cant find part 2??? I need tgat part 2 😂 did you do a part 2 on this
I have every intention of making a part 2, but it hasn't happened yet. Last winter, I borrowed a friends identical mower so I could compare them. I found one part that previous owner had hooked-up incorrectly, and some parts are bent and need to be straightened. what is the problem you are having?
The front of the deck needs to be slightly higher than the back or the belt will come off.
Nice video! Do you have a thought on when I mow why I have a strip down the middle or that just how it works?
Sounds like maybe the wrong sized blades. The blades are offset (one is a little forward of the other) so that the cut areas can overlap without the blades hitting. If the blades are too short, they will miss a stripe down the middle.
@@TheFixitShed Awesome, thank you! I got one of these for free and yesterday it quit working after it's 2nd use lol. So now I'm using your videos to fix it and really learn about the machine. Thanks for the feed back.
Thanks! I am sorry to hear the mower is giving you problems, but I guess the price was right. I am glad the videos are helping!
Thank you for the video! I have a lx 420 with the belt slip off problems. Will you have the part 2 video? I'm hoping to cure my belt problem.
I will definately make a Part 2. I ordered the belt covers, and it took them 3 weeks to show up. In the mean time, I had a bunch of higher priority projects pop up. It seems I am always "fighting fires", doing things that HAVE to be done. I have had others ask for the part 2 as well, so I will get it up as soon as I can dig this mower back out.
Great video and I have the same exact problem, as I lower the block the mower deck the blade stop spinning so what is your fix is it the adjustment on the front rod from the deck to the frame, or is it the belt tensioner ?
Thanks
I don't have a great answer. It is still sitting in my garage. The cable was hooked to the wrong place, and I compared it to another mower and a couple things are slightly bent. I haven't had time to straighten them out yet. It still looks like the 109" belt is too big. I have tried a 107" belt, but it rubs and shreds itself in an hour. Correcting the cable location may fix that, but like I said, haven't had time to get back to it.
@@TheFixitShed Hello, I watched another video it looks like The spring has lost some of its tension, so replace the spring or bend it a little bit to put more tension on it so when you lower The deck blade will still engage. So basically there’s not enough tension in the spring anymore
@@harryhansen4578 Sounds like you watched the Taryl Fixes All video. I have watched it and it does not appear to be the same issue I am having. Wish it was. Thanks, though.
what was the belt size
original was 109" x 1/2"
And if you find the pulley guard please let me know where. Toro sold out to mtd and all the part numbers I have all say they can’t get them. I have a set I bought but turns out they got a bigger one and won’t fit
I did buy a set, but I haven't had a chance to do any more than look at them in the box. you make me wonder if they are not the right size. If they fit, I will for sure let you know were I bought them.
Haven’t scanned comments and scanned your videos, but did you resolve this? It’s crazy that mine is exactly the same. Wonder if brake pad being worn is an issue (on mine) - yours looked newer. Maybe an overall issue of this rider.
I am in the process of making a follow-up video. I put a shorter belt on it and it worked great for an hour, and then that belt shredded. I have had viewers suggest a video by Taryl Fixes All, but I haven't found it yet. There is a spring he bends to make an adjustment. I need to go find it, so I can finish this mower up.
Solid tutorial!
Thank you! I am glad you liked it.
Did you ever figure it out? I have the same toro with the same exact problem and I can't figure it out
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get back to it. I ordered the belt covers and it took a few weeks for them to show up, and in the mean time I have had a few other projects become higher priority. I am hoping to get back to it in the next 2 or 3 weeks. I am sure one of the tensioning springs need to be adjusted so that it holds proper tension throughout the travel of the deck, but I cannot say for sure at this point.
What did u do to take out the slack
I haven't really resolved this yet, but a 107" belt I think would work. I put one on, but it was rubbing on someting and wore out quickly. It was rubbing because some of the mechanism is bent. I have another 107" belt to put on once I get everything straightened out.
@@TheFixitShed I tried 107 still lose I ordered a new cable I will let you know if it fixes it
Will a wheel horse deck fit on a lx 420?
I am not sure. I was just watching someone fix a cub cadet mower, and it had the same engine and deck as lx420, but not sure about wheell horse.
the belt you replaced, should have been fine, the kid at Walmart said so, lol
U ever figure it out?
Not yet. Getting close to just buying a shorter belt. That shoildn't be necessary, though. It should work with the 109". Frustrating.
Had constant loose deck belt
Had to get a Shorter 107 inch belt @ fleet farm for proper operation and now have 3 new belts that dont fit.
Thanks! I may end up doing that. I have a few more things to try to see if I can get it going with the correct size belt.
Your belt needs to be 109"
It is.
Looks like this may be the fix for your issue with the deck ruclips.net/video/5i8lOW5j43c/видео.html
Taryls video ^^^^
That's the one! I plan to be working on the mower this weekend (my weekends are Mon-Tues) so that may get included in the video! Thanks for the link!
@@TheFixitShed I did it today. Cut off the hook on the blade engagement spring, then used a torch and pliers to make a new hook. Worked like a charm!!
