The way that Opeth can mix beautiful, mournful melodies, weeping progressions, death-summoning riffs, soulful vocals, vengeful growls, all with hints of jazz, classical, and metal just makes me realise how much can actually be done with music. There really isn’t any other band with growls I enjoy nearly as much as Mr. Åkerfeldt.
you are not to blame as these acoustic sections are easily some of the best moments in the history of music and definitely have more personality than most of the song
Im 13 and I discovered metal with stranger things (hehe) and I'm really glad I got into great bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, Gojira. Such amazing music!
When the drummer switches from the ride cymbal to open hi-hat at around 8:48, the song peaks for me and my mind just enters a different world. It's such a small detail in the song, but it just completely changes the song for me!
just take care about the volume, so you can do that for as long as you'd like... "for as long as you'd like" i said... the VOLUME! BEN! I SAID TAKE CARE ABOUT THE VOOLUUME!... oh, Ben..
Goddamn I hate those 10 hour videos and for this song, I'd actually listen to it. Because that section might be the greatest thing Mikael has ever written.
Its just mind blowing to even imagine writing such a long, complex yet an amazing song, and they even play it live. Opeth is on an another level. Geniuses.......
This song and album are just the absolute best. Mike's voice was at it's peak for both growls and cleans, the guitar tone is insane and the songwriting was the perfect mix of all the Opeth ingredients.
One of the most complete pieces of music I have heard. It is really dynamic, moving through different ideas perfectly, all building in a way that is "I cant believe it keeps getting better then this"
I haven't looked too much into Opeth yet but at that point in the song I feel like they perfected what Metallica was doing or were rather trying to show them up possibly, but I'm pretty sure they love Metallica and just wanted to carry the torch and be worthy to. These guys and Dream Theater are fucking dope though
The endless amount of modulations, time signatures, and with an actual coherent result really amazes me as a classical composer. Damn, this shit is good shit.
I fucking love the progressions on this song.... this piece is dam near classical music in all honesty. Beautiful themes and Brutish riffs always contrasting each other. love it.
Yes, that is the very definition of progressive rock. Rock elevated to the point of near classical complexity. It seems almost insulting to call this a song, it's a composition.
The first song that got me into Opeth. I fucking can't get enough of the bass/guitar interplay in the 'higher' section. It's like a melodic rollercoaster.
Mourningrise375 Fucking awesome man! This song is by far my favorite so far, also heard another good heavy song, I beleive it was called "the great conjuration" if im not mistaken. Only heard it once though. Got any good heavy song recommendations? Its not that I dont like the softer ones, like "burden" is great, but nothing beats a song like this!
Yeah this happens to be my favorite song as well. Some other great songs by them are deliverance, the leper affinity, masters apprentices, the moor, serenity painted death, bleak, demon of the fall and reverie/harlequin forest. You should also check out in my time of need. It is a soft song and I know you asked for heavy ones but it's just amazing. It's even better than burden and it easily ranks into my top 5 favorite songs by them.
Mourningrise375 Porcelain Heart is probably my favorite. Mainly bc its the first I ever heard from Opeth, but that, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhh Ahhhhhhhhhhhhah Ahhhhhh!" gives me fucking goosebumps every time lol. Fucking love Opeth! They are coming to my town on Dec. 5. Definitely going!
This is the song that weaned me off of pure growling heavy metal and onto softer vocals and progressive music. This song means a lot to me, it changed my very childish views of what music I should enjoy.
The first time I heard the outros of ghost of perdition and pantera's floods my eyes welled up with tears. It meant a lot to me since I can count on one hand the times I have cried in my whole 28 years of existence.
The very best Opeth track from the very best Opeth album. This is an inspired and thrilling rollercoaster ride through ten magnificent minutes. Awesome. Breathtaking.
This song is beyond a masterpiece, way ahead of its time structurally, complex af yet melodically clear and the phrases tell a coherent story Mikael mikael mikael you fucking beast
It's just my opinion fellows, I am 22 and so opeth represent a much needed modern wave of music that is missed in this seemingly generic age of music. I know they've done nothing extravagant (I believe they actually have), but even them restating classical formulas in musically refreshing terms is an achievement. So yeah justmy opinion fellows 🙌🏼
Ziad Gadou Your words are 100% true, bro. Since I'm the same age, I feel like you, most young people don't even seem to know there's complex and food music out there :(
This only came out 12 years ago, the same year Porcupine Tree came out with the masterpiece that is Deadwing. Why do people always use the term "ahead of their time" to describe a unique band?
This is literally a masterpiece, the composition, the transitions, the world class playing of each instrument is just incredible. Even just the drums and bass are fascinating, let alone the guitar work. 4:07 I always hear this part as like it could've been an ending, then you just get absolutely pummeled with all the madness and beauty that follows! Sorry, had to write all this lol 🔥
What an absolute monster of a track. I could listen to this forever. Quite easily Opeth's most complete song, and certainly the best from their death metal days, imho.
This will always be one my top favorite songs. In 2010 "Ghost Of Perdition" introduced me to Opeth and it has been a marvelous journey. Since then, everytime I hear it is as if a friendly ghost from the past comes to visit. The nostalgia oozes off of very note and melody.
Absolute genius. Every album is a masterpiece. The best way I can describe Opeth to someone who has never heard their music: Brutal, loud, abrasive, beautiful and moving
5:55 the greatest 5/8 riff knwown to man, and then 6:30 that 2/3 riff or whatever starts again daamn boy how did they come up with all that amount of great riffs at once.
This is the perfect song to get you out of a bad mood or a slump. Starts off aggressive, gets your blood pumping, has a mellow, acoustic interlude, to let you breathe after releasing some of the pent up energy you might have had, picks back up again and builds up until about 7:38 where it sets in motion the ending (to me the best part of the song - tho it's excellent in its entirety), that concludes on a high note, in my opinion, and revitalizes your energies. Shakes you up, dusts you off, hands you some water and sends you on your way. Whenever I feel like crap and have work to do, I listen to this song and I'm ready to go. It's incredible.
My friend shared this with me. I can't even begin to explain how happy I am that this band exists. The whole album is an journey, and one I'm better for having taken. Yeah, that fucking poetic.
One of the best songs I've ever heard. I'm actually 15 (becoming 16 in september), who knows if I'll agree with myself 10 years or more from now. As an aspiring musician, I listen to lots of things, albums, bands, genres, I really don't think I've ever listened such beautiness in a single song. Marvelous.
This song is and always will be my favourite song of all time. Nothing comes close to it. I can listen to it all the way through with no issues but as soon as I even start humming along to it a get too emotional. This song just does it for me completely. Perfectly written, produced and played in every area. I was really disappointed when I discovered Opeth weren't making music like this anymore, but when I think about it, there's all the metal/dark sounding Opeth you'll ever need. There's 9 albums of it. They're such a unique take on metal/acoustic that are in a world of their own. If they'd retired after Watershed I'd have been happy. So I'm at peace with them taking things in a different direction. I just see it more as a different Mikael Akerfeldt project rather than Opeth.
@anthonysantellan1861 just listened all the way through. I liked it! I'll listen some more, but despite some really beautiful melodies, it's very linear compared to Opeth. Linear isn't always bad, but it's worth mentioning.
@@huzidamasta someone actually linked me that song on a comment I left for black waterpark by opeth and I thought it was pretty good. The last one of the 3 that are in the category of like 10 minute ride-like masterpieces would be insomnium in groves of death but I've been stuck on this one by opeth for the last few weeks. Ghost of perdition because at some points in our life we are gonna relate whether we like it or not. Anyways I'm glad you liked the song, I need to explore more music myself, if you have any hidden gems feel free to list them I'd be happy to listen.

Lyrics
Ghost of mother
Lingering death
Ghost on mother's bed
Black strands on the pillow
Contour of her health
Twisted face upon the head
Ghost of perdition
Stuck in her chest
A warning no one read
Tragic friendship
Called inside the fog
Pouring venom brew deceiving
Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young"
Devil cracked the earthly shell, foretold she was the one
Blew hope into the room and said, "You have to live before you die young"
Holding her down
Channeling darkness
Hemlock for the Gods
Fading resistance
Draining the weakness
Penetrating inner light
Road into the dark unaware
Winding ever higher
Darkness by her side
Spoke and passed her by
Dedicated hunter
Waits to pull us under
Rose up to its call
In his arms she'd fall
Mother light received
Her faithful servant's fee
In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what's clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give
Ghost of perdition
A saint's premonition's unclear
Keeper of holy hordes
Keeper of holy whores
To see a beloved son
In despair of what's to come
If one cut the source of the flow
And everything would change
Would conviction fall
In the shadow of the righteous?
The phantasm of your mind
Might be calling you to go
Defying the forgotten morals
Where the victim is the prey
Epic.

Plus it just sounds a whole lot cooler when you mix the clean vocals in with them. There really isn’t any other band with growls I enjoy nearly as much as Mr. Åkerfeldt.
Fully agree with you
Hell yeah
Truth said. It doesn't sound like he's putting effort on it. It's like his voice is just like that.
its really hard to describe. its rhythmically ominous if that makes any sense.. his timing on entering the melody is so chilling. i love it
Amen
What a legendary heaven voice.
And hell. Mikael can sing both like an angel and demon. Of course, he sounds perfect doing both.
His voice made me love progressive that can mix angel and demon.
+Jihad Medaini there's more like them?? Tell me! :o
oh yeah, there is Dream theater and opeth. Both are amazingly awesome
+Jihad Medaini DT are amazingly awesome, but they in no way master the demonic voices. Portnoy's attempts were embarassing. Good riddance!
I can't be the only one who start fucking crying at 2:50. That shit is just way too beautiful.
I can't be the only one who start fucking crying at 0:00. Fom my penis
konstitios Marjakangas LMFAO....I'm dying
Carlo Zamora this part is beatiful, i feel that fly and the energy grow into me
Feels a bit random though
As cool as the heavy parts are, I adore the calmer, more eerie parts with the acoustic guitar. Super haunting.
Hard to compete with 6:25 though
Then listen to their Damnation album. fully acoustic
you are not to blame as these acoustic sections are easily some of the best moments in the history of music and definitely have more personality than most of the song
The acoustic parts wouldn't be so haunting without the heavy ones. That's why I trust Opeth. Do whatever you want, I'll listen
8:18 I always found his growl in this specific section to be very melodic which is not the way you usually describe harsh vocals but yeah, love it
I look forward to this part whenever I listen this.
01:12 wear the grudge like a cr- oh wait...
Himmelslaub I thought the exact same thing when I first heard that lol
HAAHJAHJAHAHAH +1
Himmelslaub I swear i heard the same thing as you
Hhhan you're so right !
tool and opeth need to do a project together
One of the most beautiful songs ever crafted into existence. One of top 5 for me
Ghost Reveries was the first Opeth album i listened to, and the moment Ghost of Perdition kicked in, i was hooked. Such a flawless album.
you might want to take a listen to their watershed album .
Tyron Smith, I do like Watershed, but that was their last great album. Helped me through a lot during 2008 when I dealt with a personal loss.
Im 13 and I discovered metal with stranger things (hehe) and I'm really glad I got into great bands like Opeth, Dream Theater, Gojira. Such amazing music!
Give Tool a listen.
@Joan Already have, they're pretty good. Danny Careys drumming is amazing
I assume you’ve indulged the genius of Megadeth by now.
@@thalassophobia570Lateralus is an amazing song
@@detrockcity3Yeah, Megadeath rules!
When the drummer switches from the ride cymbal to open hi-hat at around 8:48, the song peaks for me and my mind just enters a different world. It's such a small detail in the song, but it just completely changes the song for me!
09:01 till 09:07 - everything that needs to be ever written in metal for two next decades
I like to lay in bed with all of the lights off, volume all the way up in my headphones and just feel the music
Mikaels growls haunt me in the darkness, but in a beautiful way.
the proper way to experiance Opeth
same way i do bro
dont forget while smoking, I literally can then listen to it in a completely different way, amazing way
just take care about the volume, so you can do that for as long as you'd like...
"for as long as you'd like" i said...
the VOLUME!
BEN! I SAID TAKE CARE ABOUT THE VOOLUUME!...
oh, Ben..
This album is a MASTERPIECE. Go buy it!
Absolute masterpiece! Opeth's entire discography is superb. Can't wait for new album
Already have! :D My favourite album from them.
Just bought it today!!! Loving it
Can anyone make a 10 hours version of that "winding ever higheeeer aaaa haaaa haaaa aaa haaa ya ya de de du" part ?
with increasingly higher octaves plz
Goddamn I hate those 10 hour videos and for this song, I'd actually listen to it. Because that section might be the greatest thing Mikael has ever written.
I thought it was incoherent mumbling, oh well...
@fuukaa ⌛💙 It is. HAAAAIYAAAA YAAAA AHHHHHH HIGHEEEEERR ERRRR DU DU DE
This was the first song that turned me into an Opeth lover
Same. This was the first heavy song that turned me into an Opeth lover, the first soft song was Windowpane.
@@yo-kt6ng Will O the Wisp is great too

I haven't listened to Opeth a whole lot before. But holy shit this album is a masterpiece. Very glad I stumbled upon them.
***** still life is my favorite. Serenity Painted death is just... fuckin' groovy, man..
Indeed they are one of the best.
Still Life and Blackwater Park are in the same vein (I can't use the term "similar") and will rock your face accordingly.
Same I always knew about them but they were never at the top of my priorities.
Continue. By now you already must have.
This song is freaking incredible, glad I found this band.
DaltonThomas I’m glad you did too bro!!
It's like a whole album compressed down into one song, good shit!
No there is a lot of variety on this album.
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 He's saying this song has enough material in it to become an entire album by itself
Ghost Reveries and Deliverance are the best
One of the most complete pieces of music I have heard.
It is really dynamic, moving through different ideas perfectly, all building in a way that is "I cant believe it keeps getting better then this"
This has to be one of the best songs ever made.
One of the best transitions ever 4:22

You are everywhere
You got taste man
Love Metal Yea, i know
My favorite is the 6:25ish mark. Those growls that come in are subtle, but gnarly.
Peter Dubinsky dude this sounds nothing like Metallica lmao
Learning this song part by part is where you really can see the masterminds this guys are. Love Opeth. Love this song...
"What genre is this?"
"Yes."
Prog death metal
good stuff
It's literally just Progressive Death Metal, nothing weird or out of the ordinary

Definitely but I am betting they thought the same thing and then continued to write it. Both bands are bamf's.

Wear the grudge like a crown of nega- oh, sorry
Ok you’re not wrong
It's like really dark chocolate, with just the right amount of sugar.
Also, 8:19 my hips are moving on their own!
Lol I never knew Shakira liked Opeth!
mcgibs That describes the song so perfectly!! You read my feelings! haha
lol yeah
Seriously, that groove from 8:19 to 8:59 is fucking lethal.
You described Opeth with one sentence
6:27 is pure ear ecstasy. Best metal scream ever, just couldn't be anymore fitting for the part.
The endless amount of modulations, time signatures, and with an actual coherent result really amazes me as a classical composer. Damn, this shit is good shit.
I May single handedly push this over 4 million views this week.
I fucking love the progressions on this song....
this piece is dam near classical music in all honesty.
Beautiful themes and Brutish riffs always contrasting each other. love it.
totally agree with you , i had thought just that whilst playing all their stuff over a six week drive around Europe ( on tour with Katy Perry ffs)
Yes, that is the very definition of progressive rock. Rock elevated to the point of near classical complexity. It seems almost insulting to call this a song, it's a composition.
Brandon Shukuri So true my man, it's almost like the same complexity of Bohemian Rhapsody or other Queen songs.
Someone actually made an orchestral cover of this masterpiece, you should search for it on youtube, it's really cool
Good to know there is people who appreciates this as muchos as I do.... This song is fucking amazing.. min 2:35 is so haunting.. Love Opeth
Fuck yes!!! that's my favourite part of the entire song, and in the Live version sounds even more beautiful!
I genuinely felt like I was in a trance at that point in the song when I first listened.
The song is like a journey from start to finish !!
1:52 - 2:03 Opeth just has the most intricate, medieval sounding riffs I have ever heard
The line at 7:27, the harmonies, the drum fill... Holy hell it's soooooo good.
The first song that got me into Opeth. I fucking can't get enough of the bass/guitar interplay in the 'higher' section. It's like a melodic rollercoaster.
That infectious groove at 4:50 oh man.
Every song i had heard from opeth before was so quiet so when the screaming/growls came in i nearly shit my pants!
So what do you think of opeth so far?
Mourningrise375
Fucking awesome man!
Their new album comes out today! =O
This is the song that weaned me off of pure growling heavy metal and onto softer vocals and progressive music. This song means a lot to me, it changed my very childish views of what music I should enjoy.
It is the opposite for me. It got me into growling. Never liked growling untill opeth happened to me.
@@foolishball9155same
Genuinely one of the best songs ever written. Blows me away every time I hear it.
You can air-justabouteverything to this track. Air drumming makes my neck and knees hurt tho...I'm getting too old...
My personal favorite is Still Life but Ghost Reveries is a close second
That has to be one of the most satisfying ends to a song I’ve ever heard. Just brilliant
I still think this is one of the most well-composed songs ever recorded.
This song is beyond a masterpiece, way ahead of its time structurally, complex af yet melodically clear and the phrases tell a coherent story
Mikael mikael mikael you fucking beast
How on earth is this ahead of its time? King Crimson were producing more complex stuff 30 years ago.
^
Not even 10 seconds in and you have a complete musical whiplash. Love it.
Opeth must only have concerts at the opera and the audience should attend in a fancy formal clothes . No ones work can match this craft
Honestly I'd kill to hear this song with a classical orchestra. Can you imagine that??
4:58 is pure genius.
Listening to Opeth won't just blow your mind... it'll blow your soul
Opeth is still one of the best metal bands ever.
Atreiden so groovy and sad. I love it too... (im late as fuck!)
This will always be one my top favorite songs. In 2010 "Ghost Of Perdition" introduced me to Opeth and it has been a marvelous journey. Since then, everytime I hear it is as if a friendly ghost from the past comes to visit. The nostalgia oozes off of very note and melody.
Lopez is a straight up gangster. Never get tired of his performance on this album especially
I always heard 6:11 as "even when I'm drunk on morning early days, white women really need to live."
LOL
I can hear that clearly
I cannot unhear that now XD
lmao holy shit that's hilarious
And it's true.
This song is perfect, all those changes, riffs, tones, rythms. All masterfully assembled in one song, brilliant musicians
1:08 gives off a TOOL (Lateralus) feel to me.
The whole song was giving me a tool vibe tbh
The grudge anyone?
Psilo Cybin although Maynard’s screams are always false chord and a lot higher than mikael’s fry screams
Absolute genius. Every album is a masterpiece. The best way I can describe Opeth to someone who has never heard their music:
Brutal, loud, abrasive, beautiful and moving
What an absolute masterpiece.
5:55 the greatest 5/8 riff knwown to man, and then 6:30 that 2/3 riff or whatever starts again daamn boy how did they come up with all that amount of great riffs at once.

Fuck! I choked on my spit anticipating that😁
Why this song doesn't have more views? I mean, it's a masterpiece.
Seriously one of the best songs I have ever heard in my life.
I often struggle to answer "what's your favorite" question; but for songs, the answer comes easily to my lips.
I do agree it helps release some tensions and anger but I’m my experience I would say blackwater park the song does it better so does bleak
@@metalsucks9 Blackwater is good but perhaps a bit overrated. Doesn't get heavy until over 6 minutes in.
@@jasonashley9853 not really, black water park leads off with a pretty brutal riff, then proceeds to growl for the entire song.
6:28 > 6:58 It's been my phone ring tone since forever, can't simply change it, the face people do when someone is calling... well it's priceless :)
Nice, it's really brutiful
My friend shared this with me. I can't even begin to explain how happy I am that this band exists. The whole album is an journey, and one I'm better for having taken. Yeah, that fucking poetic.
I cry every time I hear this song because it's just that beautiful. Not many bands can do that but the artistry it this is so masterful
Marvelous.
One of the heaviest most intense tracks I've ever heard. I don't care what other band or song you mentioned this is at the top of the list
This song isn't that heavy or intense, you should try broadening your horizons.
@@ДмитроКазанцев after 2 years from posting this I have have since discovered Skindred and now believe that they are are the haviest band. Bar none.

Yeah, Nothing is also a great album.
Try out countless skies by be'lakor. Not quite the same vibe as this masterpiece but a gem bone the less.
@anthonysantellan1861 If you like Opeth, 'Night Is The New Day' by Katatonia is a superb album. Idle Blood (track 3) is particularly Opeth like. In my top 5 favourite albums. Deffo worth a listen if you haven't already 👌
Omg how are they so good, like bands I regularly listen to I enjoy 70 plus percent of the songs but opeth is like constant genius
6:59 - 8:18 best transition of this song love that ryhme's
10 minute song, not a single second where i wasnt emotionally feeling it. WHY SO UNDERRATED OPETH
Opeth, Porcupine Tree, and Riverside in my opinion are the three artists who best define the modern era of progressive rock/metal.
