    LYRICS
    Into the trees
    Past meadow grounds
And further away from my home
    Baying behind me
    I hear the hounds
Flock's chasing to find me alone
    A trail of sickness
    Leading to me
    If I am haunted
    Then you will see
    Searching the darkness
    And emptiness
I'm hiding away from the sun
    Will never rest
    Will never be at ease
All my matter's expired so I run
    There falls another
    Vapor hands released the blade
    Insane regrets at the drop
    Instruments of death before me
Lose all to save a little
    At your peril it's justified
    And dismiss your demons
    As death becomes a jest
    You are the laughing stock
    Of the absinthe minded
    Confessions stuck in your mouth
    And long gone fevers reappear
    Nocturnally helpless
    And weak in the light
    Depending on a prayer
    Pacing deserted roads to find
    A seed of hope
    They are the trees
Rotten pulp inside and never well
Roots sucking, thieving from my source
Tired boughs reaching for the light
    It is all false pretension
    Harlequin forest
    Awaiting redemption for a lifetime
    As they die alone
With no one by their side
    Are they forgiven?
    Stark determination
    Poisoning the soul
    Unfettered beast inside
    Claiming sovereign control
And now the woods are burning
    Tearing life crops asunder
    Useless blackened remains
    Still pyre smoldering

Have Opeth ever had a better recorded sound? The engineering and production values on this album, and this song especially, are as good as anything I can think of. Everything sounds exactly as it should, every contribution from each instrument perfectly placed in the recorded sound. And considered from beginning to end, this album has their best songs.

  • @inthebellyofthebeast6910
    @inthebellyofthebeast6910 4 года назад +315

Heres why no more growling from Mike. Akerfeldt decided to address the drama when asked if he would ever growl again on an Opeth record:
“I can’t say, really, I’ve never turned my back on anything and I’m not
going to start now. It’s not like I don’t like that style of vocal
delivery anymore. But I just can’t develop any more as a singer if I
keep on screaming. In fact, I think I got worse at that as the years
went by. But if the future songs require those vocals, then that’s what
I’ll deliver. It seems like a long shot at this stage.”

He still growls in live shows. Think they only did 2 songs off of the new album & the rest were older works. He still uses the 'in ear monitors' so it's the crappy growling unfortunately instead of the type he did at the Royal Albert Hall show. Was still a great show.

It's really hard for me to decide between those albums which ones are my favorite and then here is Ghost Reveries. This album really strikes a chord, perhaps I am having an epiphany that this is truly my favorite. I'm not sure but it really brings me back.

Started listening to Opeth way back in high school, around 2011~2012, for literally a decade. I started with their 'metal' era with, beginning with "Ghost Reveries", which made me go down a rabbit hole and listen to everything they'd released. In this decade of constantly following up with their sound, they were there during my ups and downs, helping in so many aspects of my life, metal-wise and mental wise.
I had to deal with personal issues, I felt lonely a bunch of times in those years, and even struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. Opeth's music to me was an escape from reality, I could always go back and find comfort, I felt connected with so many of Mikael's lyrics, it made me rethink my life decisions and start to improve.
Thankfully I've found a way to deal with my inner problems and traced a well tough path for my life. I managed to overcome my depression, which I never felt ever again so far, managed to get my bachelor's degree, and started to take care of my body by eating healthy, exercise and and stopping using drugs. And all and all never abandoned listening to their music. It helped me a lot. I mean it.
Got me an Opeth tattoo on my arm, I dunno, I am grateful for knowing this band, thankful for all the good times I had with them, and plus, ITS FUCKING AWESOME
In ten years, I have not been able to attend an Opeth concert, because they rarely played in my hometown, Sao Paulo, Brazil. And this was on my bucket list, for years I've been wanting to see them live for the first time.
But the universe granted me my wish, next year, on February 8th, 2023, Opeth will play a gig in Sao Paulo and guess what, I got the tickets!!!! I am so happy that I will watch my favorite band for the very first time!!!! I feel so good
    Thank you, Opeth

Songs like Harlequin Forest and Hessian Peel are just mind-blowing in their richness, and the way the music paints such wast pictures to let you sink into your own mind and get lost in. One of my favorite Opeth songs to drum to. It goes through so many moods, and has some of Lopez’s finest drum work.
The bell/fill build up part at 8:13
The hihat and splash accent part at 3:30
Then the straight groove at 5:05
Then the bad ass stuttering outro at 10:00.
I used to have a guitar player friend who could play this song so damn good. Though he never wanted to play Opeth because he had to tune his guitar all weird.
But damn this record is a classic. Genre defining for modern prog metal.

Akerfeldt's diversity is always what impressed me the most from him. Personally I only enjoy death growls the way he does them (and that's nothing but 100% personal taste, the way everybody's opinion actually is!) People are allowed to like what they like, but not relating to something is all about the listener but not much about a true, well rounded musician like Mike. If even only one more person starts considering that for the first time, it will have been worth it to me for even mentioning it. His clean singing voice is so awesome, I cant understand why anyone but hard-core metal fans are unable to hear his transcendent ability. (It was Metallica years ago who first showed me that there can be much heaviness in even the cleanest vocals if they are done authentically.) No insult intended to anyone. Im a die hard advocate of having an open mind with music (to a point) ESPECIALLY metal. Love this song, of course!
