Listening to Opeth is more MUCH more than music. They take you to beautiful places, awesome trances and once you are about to reach inner peace...they shatter it....VIOLENTLY. It is not music, its an experience formed from quality sound in all aspects.
It’s so badass and contrasts so well with the clean section there. It just crescendos you up and out of that relaxed state and gives you goosebumps. One of the best riffs from one of the best songs from one of the best albums from one of the best bands in my opinion
There's a lot of lyrics here that reference the Black Plague...and lot of that parallels the past 2 years. Just magnify the insanity and minimize the death and that's covid lol. Sums up the differences. Historians are gonna have a field day with this just like the black plague. I just hope the sun doesn't set over blackwater park once people realize how bad we've all been led astray.
When it comes to the riffs in this song: The riff at 7:44 was always the one for me. Holy, motherf....hell!!! Especially when it gets repeated with that low, neverending growl of Mikael Aekerfeldt. Not being much of a metal fan to be honest (love some of Devin Townsend but I guess the sound tires me out quickly), that beautiful acoustic section is what won me over. Talking about a perfect manifestation in sound of the album cover and the dark month of November...
Needed to listen to this again to after listening to Opeth’s ‘return’. No…no, it’s nowhere near the same thing. Nothing will ever eclipse this composition. Maybe one of the best pieces of music ever written. The growls are not what made Opeth special - Damnation proved that, but rather a combination of genius musicians in a room crafting complex and layered composition, with ‘growls’ as merely an instrument of atmospheric effect to enhance the sensorial experience that the overall composition delivers. I don’t think anything like this will ever be created….
7:44 Eveeyone talks about the other riffs so ill talk about this one. One of my favorite sections of all time. My second favorite Opeth riff ever and the acoustic over it is absolutely HUGE to the sound.
I remember the first time I heard the opening riff of this track. I was a metalhead fresh out of gobbling up Metallica's early classic albums. I remember getting absolutely mind fucked with the peculiarity of the riffing style here and the unearthly emotions evoked by it. That first growl changed my musical taste forever. There must be countless people like me out there.
I forgot to say: the part starting at 8:06 is one of the greatest moments in music for me. There's something about that riff and the way you can hear the bass clicking from the Mendez giving it all he's got.
That yell close to the end, at 9:50 with that background riff gives me goosebumps every time! It’s insanely intense, like if it was full of pain, anger and excitement. So heavy, so metal… Absolutely fantastic!
*It’s so fucking good to see Opeth getting the recognition they’ve deserved for 20+ years. So good. So good.* If you live in a climate with a winter or fall, you should put any of their albums on and drive around chain smoking something. It is life affirming.
You can be a lover of any genre of metal be it deathcore, grunge, folk, groove, thrash...this is all time best metal song ever, really takes you to a whole new level. Im sitting here on a rainy friday night , this is the best feeling ever.
I think there's certain music you just have to admit are actual pieces of artistic genius, the vision and feeling you get from it is completely as intended. This is one of those songs where a deep emotion is somehow completely converted into musical format and delivered to the listener.
This is one of the darker tunes in Opeth's catalogue in my opinion. It's not just the musicality and heaviness, it's the breathing space given to it's parts, to build, to grow, to shrink and hover in the distance, building atmosphere. Also, Steven Wilson is a great producer/mixer, in addition to everything else he's king at.
My favorite part of this song has to be the transition at 9:10 when he screams “suspense”. It brings back the riff from 7:44, but with the scream over it, and it feels like there’s more layers because it just sounds more full and chaotic absolutely love it.
Lepers coil beneath the trees!! Dying men in bewildered soliloquies!! Perversions bloom round the bend!! Seekers, lost in their quest! Ghosts of friends frolic under the waning moon!! It is the year of death wielding his instruments!! Stealth, sovereign reaper touching us with ease!! Profound lyrics... gives me goosebumps, and the low pitch on the growl is just perfect.
I remember the first time I listened to Blackwater Park. It was 2009, and I was on my bike, riding out of Dallas to Austin, Texas for a bike race. It was starting to get dark, and go below freezing. When this song came on, it started snowing very heavily. I didn't stop. No. I kept going. I listened to the entire album and then the entire Opeth discography, while riding my bike in the snow, at night. Opeth is fucking metal.
Fuck yeah! So progressive, so many different moods and feels. Opeth virgin brought here by JINJER. As an American, i love how international metal has become. This is so Swedish! Love it! As a fifth generation Swedish American, this is my kind of Viking party. Beautiful, intellectual and savage!
I believe this song contains the best single performance of death metal growls ever committed to tape . it’s raspy it’s guttural it’s brutal but unlike a lot of the greatest to ever do it every word is perfectly distinct there’s no room for misheard lyrics they are quite clear even my girlfriend who listens to bubblegum pop was able to identify each word of the song and usually you need to have experience listening to those type of vocals to be able to distinguish words. But it’s the part right before the end Mob round the dead Point fingers at the details Probing vomit for more Caught in unbridled suspense The build and release of tension there as the tempo increases the way he just absolutely shreds his vocal cords on the word “suspense” it’s fucking perfection man….and somehow after what would have been the perfect ending to a song we get the best riff on the album and an even more intense vocal…I wouldn’t be so lacking in understanding about the issue of subjectivity vs objectivity to suggest this is demonstrably the best metal Song ever written however I have no qualms in saying it’s MY favourite song I get goosebumps every time no matter how much I hear it. I don’t think they can go back and do this again that’s why they slowly drifted away from metal. I don’t think Id want to hear their attempt at recreating the formula of Blackwater Park they know they could never top it. Anything else would be pale imitation.
I've heard this masterpiece dozens of times and I discover new things every time. Today I got a new pair of earbuds and found out there's some filthy slap bass at 8:06
Im surprised no one has mentioned it, but I think the riff at 6:00 is absolutely criminal. The complete distortion on the third note that makes it sound like noise rather than a note that helps descend into a dark crushing chamber of necrosis. It is truly an amazing riff.
@@rooster1038 I think he meant highly dynamic nature of Opeth's songs. This song starts heavy as fuck and suddenly it stops to play very quiet atmospheric piece to continue with even heavier part.
The opening grunt at 1:58 is the closest thing I've heard to a magic spell. "Power Word: Headbang", after many listens it still gets me every time. It's so masterfully introduced as well. The preceding swelling riffs establish the rhythm, followed by the short acoustic interlude that encourages you to fill the rhythm in subconsciously for a brief period before bringing the crunchy transition riff in and bringing the hammer down. Visceral!
A few weeks ago, I asked my Uncle what Opeth album to listen to as a new Opeth listener, he said a lot of them, but came to the conclusion of Blackwater Park. Definitely the best recommendation I have ever gotten. This song perfectly represents this album. Beautifully eerie, creepy, and brutal. Me too! I asked my friends, “if you met a civilization that had never heard music before, where would you start?” This was the first suggestion
Night and silent water and black rose immortal are next up!!
That bass at 8:07 is everything !!
It's like the end of the world.
That growl at 5:20 is chef's kiss
God bless the beginning riff
and all the other riffs
And the whole song
I'd call it a chord progression, probably one of the darkest ever.
Lowkey reminds me of The Price of a Mile from Sabaton
God bless ALL of them riffs up on this bitch!!! /m/
I have just listened to this track for the First time Ever. It won't be the last .
I'm drained.
What a fucking rush ....
One of the best songs of all time. What an amazing way to end an album!
6:37
"It is the year of death
Wielding his instruments
Stealth sovereign reaper
Touching us with ease"
Whole new meaning listening in 2020.
My man!
Someone doesn't know history
There's a lot of lyrics here that reference the Black Plague...and lot of that parallels the past 2 years.
Just magnify the insanity and minimize the death and that's covid lol. Sums up the differences.
Historians are gonna have a field day with this just like the black plague. I just hope the sun doesn't set over blackwater park once people realize how bad we've all been led astray.
Brand new Opeth fan. Just bought the 20 yr anniversary of this on CD, and jesus christ… this may be one of the best songs ive ever heard
Im so happy that more people are able to feel the music! Have fun on your journey
Also try Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, you might like it too. Enjoy.
I'm 29 I heard this when I was 16. It never left me. This band is incredible.
I was 18 when this came out and I’m still losing my shit when I hear this at 40. You’re in for a ride, my friend. Opeth never leaves.
6:58 The most underappreciated riff off of this masterpiece
That's honestly my favourite. Such a badass groovy riff with a Beautiful transition
One of their best riffs, period.. absolute filth
"Lepers coiled neath the trees" part always gives me goosebumps
7:44
Eveeyone talks about the other riffs so ill talk about this one.
This moment is my happy place in life
Opeth is amazing, but having more moments like that with the bass in the classic albums would have been interesting
Mendez is awesome. That slap bass gets me every time. Every. Damn. Time.
Ah yes, the music of the gods
That yell close to the end, at 9:50 with that background riff gives me goosebumps every time! It’s insanely intense, like if it was full of pain, anger and excitement. So heavy, so metal… Absolutely fantastic!
This is just one of the greatest songs of all time
It's been 5 years and I still wish I could erase my memory and listen to this album for the first time again
*It’s so fucking good to see Opeth getting the recognition they’ve deserved for 20+ years. So good. So good.*
If you live in a climate with a winter or fall, you should put any of their albums on and drive around chain smoking something. It is life affirming.
That dirty bass at 8:07 or so kicks everything up to 13 at that point, such a fucking masterpiece.
yeap , crazy bass skill
One of the greatest album closers ever.
And title tracks. Seriously. What other title track is this fucking good?
@@jasonashley9853 maybe octavarium but yeah this song rocks
@@jasonashley9853 Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Master of puppets and ride the lightning and ajfa and nightmare and the stage and peace sells and south of heaven and powerslave and a lot more
I think I heard somebody mention that on a sea of tranquility video, I agree!
Opeth is the band responsible for my musicianship. I owe it to them.
ok nick gurr rodriguez
You and I both
Blackwater Park is a masterpiece.
Didn't know a descendant of the Lawrence clan likes to dance to melodic death metal
@@panosas4645 Who's the Lawrence clan? Some famous people?
You can be a lover of any genre of metal be it deathcore, grunge, folk, groove, thrash...this is all time best metal song ever, really takes you to a whole new level. Im sitting here on a rainy friday night , this is the best feeling ever.
Saw Opeth after their growler days... I like this song and Harlequin Forest and The Moor and Face Of Melinda...only played Face Of Melinda....
This album celebrates 20 years of pure epicness this 2021. Sick liaisons raised this monumental mark.
@@bilbobaggins9451 Without a doubt. Doesn't sound like early 2000's to me at all. Then again what do I know?
the sun sets forever over blackwater park
2:50
So smooth, yet so dark.
1:57 Any more badassery concentrated in one place of space and time would cause a black hole to form
The man literally roars at 5:25
9:48 dude
Inhales
Its so good!!!!
I think there's certain music you just have to admit are actual pieces of artistic genius, the vision and feeling you get from it is completely as intended. This is one of those songs where a deep emotion is somehow completely converted into musical format and delivered to the listener.
You nailed it.
Over 12 minutes filled with epic riffs, epic solos, demonic growls and incredible emotions.
This truly is a masterpiece! :D
I love everything about this song, this album.
Opeth has the darkest music ever.
Baying of The Hounds is another of those very dark tunes.
Bruh this song could go on forever and I'd never get tired of it.
kinda wished it would. it would help to drown out lifes' miseries a bit longer,at the very least.
It's raining heavily outside and at 5:12 an absolutely ear bleeding thunder hit. Greatest feeling ever.
That riff actually reminded me of "Raining Blood" by Slayer.
My favorite part of this song has to be the transition at 9:10 when he screams “suspense”. It brings back the riff from 7:44, but with the scream over it, and it feels like there’s more layers because it just sounds more full and chaotic absolutely love it.
That growl at 5:26
Lepers coil beneath the trees!!
If he keeps practicing he might begin to sound as good as the dude from Be'Lakor

I listened to it over 350 times this year and counting according to Spotify. Indeed. Has not gotten old. Probably never will.
@@jasonashley9853 genuinely the best song of all time imo sounds like a crazy take but it's true to me
when im mad and cursing this world or when im depressed i listen to this song to blow of steam
7:44 such a beast of a riff to go with a fantastic growl.
But it’s the part right before the end
Mob round the dead
Point fingers at the details
Probing vomit for more
Caught in unbridled suspense
The build and release of tension there as the tempo increases the way he just absolutely shreds his vocal cords on the word “suspense” it’s fucking perfection man….and somehow after what would have been the perfect ending to a song we get the best riff on the album and an even more intense vocal…I wouldn’t be so lacking in understanding about the issue of subjectivity vs objectivity to suggest this is demonstrably the best metal
Song ever written however I have no qualms in saying it’s MY favourite song I get goosebumps every time no matter how much I hear it.
I don’t think they can go back and do this again that’s why they slowly drifted away from metal. I don’t think Id want to hear their attempt at recreating the formula of Blackwater Park they know they could never top it. Anything else would be pale imitation.
Just this song has an entire album's worth of riffs, any one of which would be most band's best ever.
Heck yeah!
I just shitted so hard. This song has like every riff possible.
I've heard this masterpiece dozens of times and I discover new things every time. Today I got a new pair of earbuds and found out there's some filthy slap bass at 8:06
It's disgusting dude
this song is one of the best songs i have ever heard its just perfect
Im surprised no one has mentioned it, but I think the riff at 6:00 is absolutely criminal. The complete distortion on the third note that makes it sound like noise rather than a note that helps descend into a dark crushing chamber of necrosis. It is truly an amazing riff.
criminal? i murder a rhyme
I love how the double bass kicks in as well, the fact that this isn't even my favourite riff from this song says something.
Opeth one of the best Bipolar bands ever!
One of?
Yea, one of? Plural? This is the damn best.
Nah that would be Atheist
Sorry, out of the loop here, what is a Bipolar band?
I have never heard anything that made me want to head bang and curl up into a ball in the corner, while making me feel at peace, all at the same time. Opeth is F@$%ING AWESOME!!!!!!

You have a cool uncle, keep him close
He really is the best. And yes, we are very close and I plan to keep it that way.
