I discovered this band literally yesterday. I’ve binged on their music across their entire discography. These guys really don’t accept anything less than extraordinary, holy shit.
When Watershed came out. I took my then-gf to go see them. I had only played her the softer Opeth because she was metal but she was 5-FingerDP-metal... Opeth opened with Deliverance. Her eyes went from normal to hubcap size in less than a second with her mouth agape. She couldn't believe it was the same band. 2010 where have you gone?....
Heritage and and Pale Communion had a very clear 70's feel and texture in the sound, but this feel modern, and still maintaining the core elements os the last two albums and the dark and heavy sound of the death metal era. Loving this so far.
I feel that Heritage, Pale Communion and now this album are observations of Opeth exploring the anatomy of Ghost Reveries, and as well as filling in the missing links between that album and Damnation.
OsightblinderO No they don't, what the fuck are you talking about. I've seen them live 3 times over the past three years, and they played one or more songs from Ghost Reveries at each show. If they hated it, then explain why they played it live in its entirety during their 25th Anniversary Tour last October. I don't know why it was marketed as a tour because it was only show, but I was at that show and they CELEBRATED the album because it was also the album's 10th Anniv. They also played "The Grand Conjuration" when I saw them at Wacken last year, and "Ghost Of Perdition", "Atonement" and "Reverie" when I saw them in Boulder, Colorado in 2013.
Strong logic. "I dislike something so i'll convince myself Opeth also dislike it to validate my opinion." And then spread the word as truth without evidence..
Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt says of the track; I was trying to draw inspiration from the negative aspects of love: the jealousy, the mindfucks, the paranoia and everything that comes with what’s ultimately a beautiful feeling.
Opeth can’t fucking make a bad album or even a bad song. They are every single one fucking badass musicians, and all always genuinely creative and inspired. Altogether a fucking flawless band.
Absolutely tremendous. Reviews will echo that notion (mine included) and our goal should be to share this to the ends of the earth. In a way, the heavy riffing interwoven with those fantastic cleans rings like a compromise. What's even more impressive about that is no such goal was present, instead just being the natural intrepid exploration of a band. This is the mature glow of a band that explored their Earth, then decided to pursue sonic space travel to find new worlds.
I saw your review as well. It was a different point of view, a good point of view. I'm one of those who is stuck in the middle. I'm neither completely republican, or completely democratic. I'm neither pro-growls or anti-growl. I am however, pro-progressive anything. I'm glad Opeth decided to release the official version of this track, cause the guitars in this other video sounded fuzzy at the bottom. Like overly fuzzy. This could very well be the authors intent, or it was just the audio quality in the other video. (not yours :P) I digress. I have found myself replaying this track over and over now, and it's slowly growing on me. It's sure heavy, there's obvious talent + chops, and character. Huge sound. In a good way. AND I have yet to even read the lyrics, which is why I came here in the first place. lol
In the studio tour they did recently, there are guitars all scattered around but they're all 6 string, so they might just be rocking massive strings. Either way, this is something new and weird. Looking forward to hearing more.
Simple riffing, low tuned guitars? Is Åkerfeldt alright? I mean he was nagging about low tunings for like a decade and everything (?). Not complaining though, it's great that they experiment and I like it. Looking forward to listen to it on a pair of good speakers. Just now the recording seems off.
My first exposure to Opeth was Advent, Deliverance and Ghost of Perdition, so obviously I love their metal works, but you can't deny that there is magic in the last 3 albums. The Devil's Orchard and Nepenthe are what I think to be some of the best they've ever done. Eternal Rains Will Come and Moon Above, Sun Below, are some of the best modern compositions I've ever heard, the same can be said for the entirety of Pale Communion. Sorceress (The album) contains some of the most haunting and beautiful melodies and brutal keys/Hammond I've ever heard, and I've listened to a lot of 70s prog, and everybody says Opeth is just ripping off 70s prog, I've NEVER heard a song that sounded like Devil's Orchard or Sorceress (The Song)
I enjoy everything I have heard that Mikael has been a part of. Not to downplay anyone else's work on these recordings, but the guy just does not participate in garbage.
Agreed. Ghost of Perdition is just the pinnacle of metal. That being said, I'm someone who didn't care for Pale Communion, and I'm pumped for Sorceress. I didn't think Opeth could pull off truly great songs without the dirty vocals Akerfeldt's capable of, but this song proves me wrong. Can't wait to see what other tracks this album's gonna be packing!
8 bit Nintendo soundtrack transforms into a sludgy/stoner nightmarish hell world featuring priest-like vocal melodies which then finish up with something out of a Genesis record.
Agreed. This gives me hope for this album. I did not really like past two releases, liked Heritage a little bit because it was really so melancholic and sad. The last one I don't even remember its name, did not really impress me. This song sounds good, I hope the rest of the album is in similar style.
My favorite Opeth song. Yes, I heard them IN 1995. This is killer songwriting because it’s great and pays no attention to what it SHOULD be. It just is, regardless of likeness or not.
There are still fans out there that just won't accept the current direction Opeth are doing now, they'd rather see them repeat Blackwater Park (Or My Arms, Your Hearse, whatever) over and over again. Honestly, I'd rather have a band do different things than just repeat the same classic album over and over again (Even though I listen to KMFDM). It makes the band more interesting when they venture into different artistic direction...
It's not the 'accepting' part, it's the music that's not that good anymore. Damnation is a pretty well revered album with no growls or death metal things, but it sounded like Opeth, sounded like a unique take on the 70's rock and the songs were just well written. This is an incoherent mess. This come from a 3 decade 70's prog rock fan.
With due respect, it just really comes down to opinion. It's debatable. I do understand the fanbase is divided with this current direction. But if they did Ghost Reveries part 3 I would've got sick of them. personally. I actually did like Heritage when it came out because it was something I didn't expect from them. And I stil play the album from time to time. But that's just my opinion. And my impression how the fans reacted when it came out . But since you're more prog than I am, what's your recommendation of 70's prog albums?
They've really outdone themselves here. I appreciate the revisiting of the extra heavy elements without even that much distortion. 1:02 - 1:13 sounds like Scourge of Iron by Cannibal Corpse lol
I actually love this & I've been a fan since Orchid. Usually one has to go across several artists to obtain the same musical diversity as you get from Opeth's albums.
Jeez you posted this comment 6 fucking years ago. Everytime i heard Sorceress back then I was like, duuuuude that bit its the twin brother of Scourge of Iron. Amazing you thought the same. Cheers my dude.
I'm really glad Opeth is growing and changing tbh, that's what a true prog band is supposed to do remind you guys. Not record the same proven formula every album.. they're not young and angry like before and their sound reflects that, they don't sound angry, they sound precise and refined, love it.
I realize this track has garnered some what of a mixed reaction from fans, but that's normal at this point in Opeth's career. Almost everything they do now gets a lot of mindless bashing. (Not saying it doesn't get constructive criticism either, but there is a lot of unfair treatment in this as well) Out of the past 3 albums that have been different (including this one), my hopes are highest for this one. The fact that Opeth can transition from such a groovy keyboard intro to a similarly groovy yet crushing, chuggy riff is what made them strong from the very beginning. Whether it be acoustics, keyboards, or distortion, they're solid and always will be. This song, to me, feels more energetic and lively than, well, ANYTHING on Heritage or Pale Communion. While they were both fantastic albums, they at times, felt dull. The riffs in this track are simple, yet effective. The fact that they're simple makes some people think they're boring, but for me, it's not boring. It's a banger.
I found Cusp of Eternity and The Devil's Orchard both sounded much more lively than this song, which sounds flat. I do have high hopes for this album (if nothing else I love the cover art :P), but I've found this song to be a disappointment. I completely disagree with your assent of the riffs in this song, they are so dull.
I don't think the riffs are boring because they're simple. Everything Nick Drake writes is very simple yet very harmonic and beautiful. The riffs in this song are boring because it's part typical open-chord chugga nonsense that's been done to death for decades. Since when was Opeth supposed to be about switching to a new genre, but contributing absolutely nothing to said genre?
+ganondorfchampin I really don't see how Cusp of Eternity's chuggy riff is any different from this. Alright, Cusp DOES HAVE a bit more emotion and a bit more density. I can easily hear that. But it's still a very simple track, much like this one. I imagine Cusp, when it first hit RUclips, got a lot of the same comments. "Boring. Dull", etc etc. Now people praise it to death. In a few years, this track might be looked back on and enjoyed. Because right now, it's new, and right after listening to classic Opeth, sure, it may sound boring and distasteful (if that's even a word xD). But after multiple listens, I mean MULTIPLE, there's a greater chance that it will be enjoyed.
when I heard a couple of songs from this album my first reaction was this; "what is going on, what have they gone and done now?" but after having a few listens I really begin to get the feel for it, it's beautifully crafted and the lyrics are strong throughout. I really think this will become a favourite of mine when driving to and from work for instance. have had a thing for heritage and pale communion lately, I reckon this will be a fine addition to the playlist:) Thank you Opeth for never staying the same, and allways be progressive and experimental, I love it!
To me OPETH is the best when they get really jazzy, be it slow and melancholy moody or fusion-like and technical. "Sorceress" is one of my favorite OPETH songs as it sounds really 70s proggy with that fusion jazz intro riff arrangement, and then you have these 90s sounding alternative metal choruses and chugga-chugga parts, perfectly balanced. It's like a compilation of heavy prog, epic, spanning for decades, paying tribute to its jazz roots. Excellent song!
Having heard the entire album, some songs more than ten times each, I can easily say this is one of their best albums ever. I love it. Thanks a lot Opeth.
I hate the fact that so many people are hating on this track. If you're not a fan of the last few Opeth records, that's fine. Then go back and listen to their old stuff. Some bands are like that. But you don't need to bitch and moan about how they aren't "metal" anymore. Opeth is a Prog band. Prog can be heavy and brutal, but also can be calm and soothing. I think they've always done a good job of maintaining a happy medium between the two. If you don't like the track then move along. I like it and can not wait for the album to drop in Sept!
dude you ask people not posting their opinions because they differ from yours. just grow up it's not hating it is just freedom of speech. everyone is a fan here noone wants to hurt anyone.
+anast dimebagrestinpeace I agree. It's freedom of speech. But there is a difference between constructive and elaborative criticism and mindless bashing, saying things like "boring" and "snoozefest".
Weird, since all fans seem to love Damnation and that's a pretty mellow album. This stuff is just all over the place and terrible at mimicing 70's prog rock. Nothing progresses well, this song literally sounds like Mike wrote 3 riffs in different seasons of the year and pasted them.
Exotic Eagle you talk like every positive comment is like a whole book of poetry. there's no difference between negative and positive comments. both help and both needed.. just accept it and continue with your life
is it possible to just have this entire video tattooed onto my body? i love the artwork on the latest record so much The peacock is so magnificent, like the perfect blend of grace and beauty with Evil and Maliciousness, something simple like the colour of its eyes and the gold that encompasses them, just makes it look so expressive, Simple, Beautiful, and yet horrifying and the way the feathers look matted? honestly i could not compliment the artist enough, ive always loved Opeths dark art style but im so captivated by this record. Comparing it to something like the dark and ominous blackwater park Its such a vast contrast, the same can be said with the multiple opeth sounds we've heard over the years aswell, but i have always and will always love this band
I have not heard this new stuff, but i'm not upset with Opeth changing their music. They are just being artists making the shit they like to play. If you want growl then go listen to the albums with growl. I've been listening to black water park again for a few days now and I'm still surprised at how great that album was. I guess my point is that you cannot ask for another blackwater park or ghost reveries or orchid or any of the older album because they have already done those. Go listen to what you like, and be grateful Opeth created them. If the new music is what the band want to play, then lets support them. I'd rather that they are playing the music they enjoy, than them hating playing shit they dont want to play anymore.
Dude, i feel the same way. I've seen too many musicians lose their passion and their music lost their charm shortly afterwards. I'm glad Opeth still has theirs, and i wish them the best. However it was Blackwater Park & Ghost Reveries that made me fall in love with their music, and i'm just not looking for what they're doing these days.
This is friggin awesome. Their 90’s shit is friggin awesome. Animals as leaders is awesome. Black tongue also. Cornelius rock. De staat are groove monster minimalists. Billain and Culprate have a sound design that’ll knock you for 6. NOISIA provide consistently for 20 years. Jimi Hendrix is a heavy influence on distorted guitar and one of the best to do it for the time and still. Antoine dufour is just as much a virtuoso as Vai and Van Halen, or malmsteen if you like your scales. Car bomb bring a whole new level to experimentation within metal. A nod to Frederick thordendal’s special defects era. Subjective listening as usual. Opeth rock man. This new sludgy doomish stuff is killer. Opinions :)
0:30 ..ok.. What the hell are you doing Opeth..? 0:50 ..I'm losing my hope over here.. 1:03 ..Wait.. this actually sounds pretty fucking epic! 5:49 .......WHY IS THIS SONG SO SHORT?!
+TheWildHealer Seriously, explain to me what's so bad about the intro? It's a fucking banger. I've always thought people appreciated experimentation. I've always thought people appreciated tributes to older music. Clearly I was wrong.
I have no idea why everyone is saying that this song had to grow on them. This is THE song that got me into Opeth. I was also high as shit on shrooms the first time I heard this, but this song still undeniably kicks ass
The one that got me was Hessian Peel/porcelain heart. Listen to those, then familiarize yourself with the style. Then come back to this, expecting the same style. Not saying you won’t like this, but if you come in expecting that style, it’ll throw you off a bit. But then you will grow to love it
In my case it was "The Drapery Falls" - but that was back in 2005 or so. Still, "Sorceress" is one hell of a song - one of the best they made in recent years imho.
Ironically I also heard this song first and it was the only song of them that i liked for a while, but eventually I weng back through their discography and now this isn't even in my top 20 Opeth songs
I've really been enjoying the drumming on the last few albums starting for heritage. The jazz influenced drumming is done very skillfully here and complements the songwriting. Props to martin.
I think they've finally nailed down what they've been going for since Heritage. Loved watching their growth over the years...Truly one of the greatest bands walking these days...
I told myself ill never listen to newer opeth albums because no more growls but well... the more I listen to this, I'd like to take thats statement back
Can't believe after five years (or more) people are still whining the same old crap since day one. You keep coming back for more though??? I stuck up for these morons back then but now its just sad. Get over it people. The song - its awesome. Heavy, just what I've been hoping they'd do after hearing Cusp of Eternity for the first time. They can still be heavy without needing the death metal and after some extensive prog explorations the last couple albums, its just what the doctor ordered. And its a surprise because I wasn't expecting any new material from them for another year at least. New label, new chapter. Congrats on the new record and hope to see you live Stateside. (Tour with Katatonia???)
What you see is the reality. If Iphone becomes Oneplus 3 people will surely miss the classy part of it. That's what happened to Opeth. They have lost the Class and soul of their music. Heavy our not, I loved Opeth until Damnation. But after that it became meh.
Md. Ziaul Hoque Ch. Damnation was a great album. They've also had some great stuff of Ghost Reveries and Watershed. Heritage is where they really started going to pot, though even then they've still had a few good songs.
Too each their own. I'll always respect others' opinions. But the cookie cutter whining year after year is straight comedy at this point. Luckily, there's always something to enjoy for me. But seriously though - why do you even bother coming back for more? Just looking for more excuses to complain? This started after Morningrise - people bitched about MAYH. Its been fucking 20 years - the river of tears is epic at this point.
I am a sinner and I worship evil Blood is thinner but you will never know Can you confess that you thrive in chaos? You're a sorceress and your eye is on the lost But you're dying It's in your eyes You're a charlatan You get everything you wish You're a harlot Carry poison in your kiss Beg forgiveness With a dagger in your hand Sow your death seed And reap the dying lands But you're crying It's only vice Empty vessel Drained of hope And none the lesser at the end of A rope Have you ever hated like I? Know I still awaited the absence of lies Watch your eager tongue Attack me from behind Riddle whispers Bleak futile control Like a twin sister Adapting to a role You're a murderer Bloodlust increase You're a harvester Come close to spread disease And you're hiding I hear you cry
This band are too good to be true!! I've listened through thier whole discography many times, but I still want more!! They're just one of those bands!! And if you think this soung sounds great here, seeing them perform it live is just exceptional!!
Opeth Review Maybe its worth mentioning that im a drummer and that this influences my opinion alot. Im open for discussion. Remember this is MY OPINION not facts! Also sorry for some grammatical mistakes. Orchid - 77/100 The first album of Opeth and from many seen as the best. I can understand why, especially for that time. As a Death-Metal band the songs were more complex than known to that date (with a few exceptions of course). But for me the album just doesn't make it. It's still good but not comparable to their later stuff. Outstanding Songs: In the Mist she was standing, The twilight is my robe Weak Songs: Under the weeping moon (that 5 minute fill just upsets me), Silhouette, Requiem Morningrise - 80/100 Morningrise, very diverse and complex. Also their only Album with a 20 minute song. The people were expecting something like Orchid and Opeth came up with something even better. The feel to this album is more slow and a little bit more depressing (all though never the main theme), but also much more melodic then Orchid. This makes it so great IMO. Outstanding Songs: Black Rose Immortal, To bid you farewell Weak Songs: There are no weak songs but the score is that "low" because of the comparison to the later records. My Arms, your Hearse - 80/100 The first concept album of Opeth and strangely most of the times the only album people don't like, which i can't really understand. It was never the album of which i thought about much or listened very deep into it but it was just fine for me, kind of like morningrise - i just listen to it, nothing more or less. Just a bunch of solid songs (and demon of the fall of course :) ). Outstanding songs: Demon of the fall, April Ethereal Karma, When, The Amen Corner Weak songs: Madrigal, Credence, Prologue, Epilogue Still Life - 90/100 Second Concept album in a row. And what an album it is, Mikael seemed to have find his way of balancing the melodic stuff with all the Death-Metal stuff. So many strong songs and two songs completly melodic. I also like the jazz influence on the drums. The story he told was of course still a taboo topic in the news in that time, which makes it even greater. Not much to say about weak or strong because every song is one piece to the puzzle of this album. But i think Serenity painted death and Moonlapse Vertigo are the songs to point out here. (in a positve way ofc.) Blackwater Park - 95/100 The majority likes this album probably the most or thinks of it as the best. It is just outstanding how much of an awesome album it is, the atmosphere created is just out of this world. The intro song, Leper Affinity, has just the perfect dark and evil start into the album. Strong Songs: Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, Dirge for November, Leper Affinity, Bleak Deliverance - 100/100 For me the perfect Opeth album (not because its considered to be the most death-metal one), but every song seems to be perfect. The riffs are just so well written. And the drums are in comparison to Blackwater Park much more diverse and complex. The drums are just a part of the reason I adore this album so much. It's heavyness and it's evil sound (from the riffs) make it for me so good. For absent friends and A fair judgement are adding just enough melodic stuff to be a complete Record. All strong songs! Damnnation - 95/100 What an album to be just released one year after Deliverance. The softness, the depressing and melancholic mood are just right in place. Great example for how evolvement should work or what bands like to do, despite what their fans say ( *cough* *cough* Linkin Park). Pretty much a soft rock record but still the complete Opeth feel. Outstanding Songs: Windowpane, Ending Credits, My Time of Need Weak Songs: If i have to pick one I would say Closure Ghost Reveries - 86/100 Very melodic album with the focus on one topic. I like the album for the diffrent things Mikael tried, for example a fairly melodic black metal song (atleast lyrically) with The grand Conjuration, finally the implementation of a keyboard, and the very sad two songs or ballads (Hours of wealth, Isolation years). Why this fairly low score though, like I said the drums make it for me. Dont get me wrong the playing is beyond great on that record BUT the snare sound is just horrible IMO. Outstanding Songs: Reverie Harlequinn Forest, The baying of the hounds, Ghost of perdition Weak Songs: Atonement Years - it just feels like this song shouldnt be in this album, the mood is just way too happy or even orientalic a little bit. I could image this song to be in Heritage, but not in this dark album. Watershed - 91/100 The last album to feature our beloved growls from Mikael. And the first album from Opeth where i felt like he didnt really had focus on one main topic. Just a bunch of good songs thrown together. As the name suggests it probably should prepare for whats about to come. With all that in mind it's still an good album. Especially with Porcelain Heart and it's pure melodic Heavyness or Hessian Peel, one of the alltime greatest IMO. Outstanding songs: Hessian Peel, Porcelain Heart, The Lotus Eater, Burden Weak Songs: Bridge of Sighs Heritage - 82/100 Man it took me LONG to get into Heritage. But im glad i gave it many tries. The overall orientalic sound and it's psychedelic riffs sure are a thing that you have to getting used to. Even though it's good it's nowhere near to their old stuff atleast IMO. But its what they want to do so im ok with it. Outstanding Songs: I Feel the dark, Folklore, Pyre, Nepenthe, Marrow of the Earth, Face in the Snow Weak Songs: Slither, Devils Orchard (just dont like it) Pale Communion - 94/100 Strangely ive liked this right away. Don't know what I can say about it. Outstanding Songs: Cusp of eternity, Voice of treason, Faith in Others (God this song is beautiful and so sad, just perfect) Weak songs: Goblin, River Sorceress: 75/100 The mixing was straight away one of the reasons that this record ruined the experience for me. The Snare sounds incredibly bad and overall is the bass way too loud (not the bassguitar, the whole bass-sound). Outstanding songs: The Ward, Will o the Wisp Weak songs: too many IMO
@@tplouffe9226 Wow that's cool. I feel honored :) Tell me later about your experience and your opinion. PS: My score for heritage would probably be higher (around 85-90 i guess)
Opeth has been and will continue to be the greatest band. If you want the growls you got it… if you want the melody you got it… complex song structure you got it… name it this band will do it
Saw these guys live last night in portland. Never listened to their music before. Talk about epic!! Tons of tasty riffs with lots of face melting carnage mixed in. New fan, right here!
That sounds epic af! I've always wondered what it would be like to hear this band for the first time via live setting. I can imagine the setlist was interesting....it was all over the place! Welcome to the club. Discovering this band can takeover the next year or two of your life if you let it. Just a fair warning. Enjoy!
For me, the reason why it grows on some of us older fans who weren't too keen on it. The metal-chugga-chug groove. Opeth's older catalogue had some bangers that have a sick groove, and I think subliminally it hooks in. Opeth's older stuff while progressive, it did not go crazy with the 'Jazz' and prog. They made sure they had hooks that you can bang to. The new stuff not so much. The newer sound is more focused on the progressive influences, so hooks and grooves take the backseat for more crazy keyboards and Jazzy instead of Blues guitar solos. I think the easiest way to explain it is Old Opeth - Blues and Grooves and Metal. New Opeth - Jazz, experimental, hard to follow if not into super progressive 70's rock. For me this song just brings back a few elements I miss from Oldpeth. Newpeth is still great don't get me wrong, it just doesn't hit the same spots.
Interesting how there's always one side of the group that complains that their music sounds the same and then another group that complains that they wish they sound like they used to if they change something. I personally really like how they transformed. It's their music and they can do whatever they want with it. If you don't like it, then don't listen to it.
Yeah, it's their music and whatnot. But you can't blame a fan for being upset when what they hope for never arrives. It's like you fall in LOVE with a truck company, and you've bought every model in the past. Now this year, all of the sudden, they're like "fuck it, we're selling cars now" and you're left there like "Well shit, I didn't want a car. What happened to your awesome trucks? I have lots of shit to haul and your latest model is getting old!"
Sure, it's heavy, but the riffs are super boring. Disturbed has heavier songs than this, like Decadence, and that song actually has some variation, unlike this song, which is just chug-chug-chug.
@@Brother2Saintz it's a combination of different modes, which is what makes Mikael's songwriting so unique. He openly knows very little about actual music theory, which to many of us is a good thing.
Space is the first word that comes in my mind to describe the direction taken by Opeth but it's simply authentic and original. A less melodic than older albums with growls but with several listening, I really appreciate what I hear!
Just got the vinyl for this album. Absolutely stunning from start to finish! I'm glad I''m late to the party. I can listen to it all with equal appreciation. I'm with Rogelio Pascual. Opeth is awesome with or without growls.
I would trade every single thing I possess in this world for that chorus to last two bars longer, it has no right hitting that hard yet lasting that short
I love it from my first listen also, but because the opening reminds me of Rush, one of my favorite bands, and the middle reminds me of Alice in Chains, another of my favorite band... But TBH this doesn't sound too much as 'classic' Opeth and must be why many people didn't like it at first listen... I still love it though
The first 6 albums were the masterpieces. To be suggested as a first song when searching Opeth is a crime against music. This song doesn't do Opeth justice.
I hated their direction on the last 2 albums for a while, but I can honestly say "I get it now". This album is very, very good. I can't stop listening to it. And now I'm going back to Heritage and Pale Communion, and it's almost like I'm listening to it with a different lens so to speak.
This particular song is amazing. It's way heavier than anything else on the album. This has the brutality and angst of old Opeth even though theres no growls.
This sounds like a song that would be playing in an elevator on a trip to hell after you die -- it's like your dead soul is being slowly taken to hell in the elevator, but there's no way to stop it, there's no one there, no buttons, no controls, it's just you trapped in a metal box, almost like a coffin, and you're being escorted to the depths of hell...and I fucking LOVE it.
Only post Watershed Opeth record I've listened to is ICV (very solid stuff). Probably gonna give Sorceress a spin next, since the title track slaps so hard. Amazing combination of riffs and oh man, those vocals. Very Soundgarden/Alice in Chains.
Opeth members all have a very enlightening musical connection. Calm. Open mindedness. True Artists and it shows throughout the Whole Opeth as a collective
Stop blaming the lack of growls. that isn't the problem at all. All of Damnation, Harvest, Porcelain Heart, Burden, Coil... All clean singing, but fantastic vocal melodies & songwriting. This song, like Cusp of Eternity, is basically mostly one riff with some dressing. The vocal melodies follow the riff exactly which is boring. If you listen to Opeth's older clean material, the vocal melodies really compliment the guitar rather than follow it. There's other aspects too, but that's a big one. The Devil's Orchard has these elements which is why I like it a lot, but most of the last 2 albums lack this.
Just listen to their older music then, I personally don't like listening to the same 2 or 3 albums for the rest of my life so I enjoy something different.
I do miss the growling, but I always liked Opeth for the clean vox. But, the shift in style does nothing for me. It's just a little too cheesy for me. I would have been happier with more of a Damnation-style continuation. Opeth feels like they gave up the very things that made them unique. And I can't get behind that. Good for them, though. I'm glad they still have fan support and they're doing what they want to do.

Uh no, and ghost reveries is shit. even they hated it
+OsightblinderO uhm, no, it was a pretty good album. The fact that they didn't like it, doesn't say much.
OsightblinderO
No they don't, what the fuck are you talking about.
"I dislike something so i'll convince myself Opeth also dislike it to validate my opinion."
And then spread the word as truth without evidence..
Opeth frontman Mikael Akerfeldt says of the track; I was trying to draw inspiration from the negative aspects of love: the jealousy, the mindfucks, the paranoia and everything that comes with what’s ultimately a beautiful feeling.
Dude’s a genius.
Opeth can’t fucking make a bad album or even a bad song. They are every single one fucking badass musicians, and all always genuinely creative and inspired. Altogether a fucking flawless band.
Like Zeppelin
The new album is utter trash, Infact anything from heritage onwards is trash.

@@realrealreal_ well it’s not wrong, I have ears and it’s garbage.
Just watched your review, DAMN son! this is fire
(not yours :P)
I digress. I have found myself replaying this track over and over now, and it's slowly growing on me. It's sure heavy, there's obvious talent + chops, and character. Huge sound. In a good way. AND I have yet to even read the lyrics, which is why I came here in the first place. lol
Great thing about music, Tom is that it's subjective.
Shut up, Tom. What do you contribute to the musical world? Go listen to Morningrise and fuck off.
Your 'goal' should be to give honest reviews, regardless of your affection for the band. I'm not getting that impartiality with you.
7 strings guitars, with Drop A tuning.
Death Metal mood, with an Stoner and Progressive flavour.
In the studio tour they did recently, there are guitars all scattered around but they're all 6 string, so they might just be rocking massive strings. Either way, this is something new and weird. Looking forward to hearing more.
Yea definitely 6 strings. Probably tuned AADGHE or something
6 strings in drone a but yea
Simple riffing, low tuned guitars? Is Åkerfeldt alright? I mean he was nagging about low tunings for like a decade and everything (?). Not complaining though, it's great that they experiment and I like it. Looking forward to listen to it on a pair of good speakers. Just now the recording seems off.
+Alex Ignobilis the drums are super squashed
My first exposure to Opeth was Advent, Deliverance and Ghost of
Perdition, so obviously I love their metal works, but you can't deny
that there is magic in the last 3 albums. The Devil's Orchard and
Nepenthe are what I think to be some of the best they've ever done.
Eternal Rains Will Come and Moon Above, Sun Below, are some of the best
modern compositions I've ever heard, the same can be said for the
entirety of Pale Communion. Sorceress (The album) contains some of the
most haunting and beautiful melodies and brutal keys/Hammond I've ever
heard, and I've listened to a lot of 70s prog, and everybody says Opeth
is just ripping off 70s prog, I've NEVER heard a song that sounded like
Devil's Orchard or Sorceress (The Song)
Oh man I do so love Devil's Orchard!
I enjoy everything I have heard that Mikael has been a part of. Not to downplay anyone else's work on these recordings, but the guy just does not participate in garbage.
OfficerMarmalade Also Tool the falls in line with progressive rock or metal.
What about Black Rose Immortal? That’s their best song

Ghost of perdition = growl
Sorceress .... NOPE
Same!
You never know. He's started growling more live now.
Opeth is awesome with growls. Opeth is awesome without growls. Opeth is awesome with and/or without growls. Opeth is Opeth.

Agreed. This gives me hope for this album. I did not really like past two releases, liked Heritage a little bit because it was really so melancholic and sad. The last one I don't even remember its name, did not really impress me. This song sounds good, I hope the rest of the album is in similar style.
No... Clean singing in opeth is like guitar solos in little wayne,.

Sound a bit like mastodon.

An asmr channel hello 💛🍊🌟
Now You have live with this song
My favorite Opeth song. Yes, I heard them IN 1995. This is killer songwriting because it’s great and pays no attention to what it SHOULD be. It just is, regardless of likeness or not.
I don't get it why people hate this track it's an amazing song can't wait for the album to come out
People hated Cusp of Eternity and The Devil's Orchard when they came out. Just give it some time.
+Exotic Eagle people hated the devil's Orchid?
4:40 that riff is an eargasm
They've really outdone themselves here. I appreciate the revisiting of the extra heavy elements without even that much distortion. 1:02 - 1:13 sounds like Scourge of Iron by Cannibal Corpse lol
I actually love this & I've been a fan since Orchid. Usually one has to go across several artists to obtain the same musical diversity as you get from Opeth's albums.
Great, now I have to listen to Scourge of Iron.
(For the 1,000th time... XD)
i thought the same thing! hahah
Okay now I'm starting to like Cannibal Corpse again haha xD
Jeez you posted this comment 6 fucking years ago. Everytime i heard Sorceress back then I was like, duuuuude that bit its the twin brother of Scourge of Iron. Amazing you thought the same. Cheers my dude.
I never knew metal could be this beautiful. Soft but heavy 🤘💪
That main riff is heavy as fuck.
@@Quest4HorrorI agree. Difference between being loud and being heavy. Song is so heavy it drags
This is the great example of modern prog-rock. Drums and guitar lines, vocals, the story, all on highest level! Awesome))).
I'm really glad Opeth is growing and changing tbh, that's what a true prog band is supposed to do remind you guys. Not record the same proven formula every album.. they're not young and angry like before and their sound reflects that, they don't sound angry, they sound precise and refined, love it.
This song is pretty angry.
this song is stuck to my head , and just wont go away... Sorcery
These guys have inspired me too go back into writing original heavy prog music. They have just gotten better with age. Songwriting genius.
Lamb of God, Gojira, Mastodon, and Opeth all in one tour please!!!

"We're Opeth, by the way!"
- Mikael Åkerfeldt @ Tuska 2019
I realize this track has garnered some what of a mixed reaction from fans, but that's normal at this point in Opeth's career. Almost everything they do now gets a lot of mindless bashing. (Not saying it doesn't get constructive criticism either, but there is a lot of unfair treatment in this as well)
Out of the past 3 albums that have been different (including this one), my hopes are highest for this one.
Could be also because of the mix, on this video the song doesn't have the harmonics it has on other versions I came across.
+Lug N. So there are other videos of this song with better mixes? Do tell.
I really think this will become a favourite of mine when driving to and from work for instance. have had a thing for heritage and pale communion lately, I reckon this will be a fine addition to the playlist:)
Thank you Opeth for never staying the same, and allways be progressive and experimental, I love it!
This entire record is inspired and full force. So wonderful to hear them so alive and well. Long live Opeth! ~♡
The way he says "It's in your eyes" (1:57) screams Layne Stanley!

The peacock is so magnificent, like the perfect blend of grace and beauty with Evil and Maliciousness, something simple like the colour of its eyes and the gold that encompasses them, just makes it look so expressive, Simple, Beautiful, and yet horrifying
and the way the feathers look matted? honestly i could not compliment the artist enough, ive always loved Opeths dark art style but im so captivated by this record.
Comparing it to something like the dark and ominous blackwater park Its such a vast contrast, the same can be said with the multiple opeth sounds we've heard over the years aswell, but i have always and will always love this band
TizzmantineUK I totally fucking agree. You made a valid, thoughtful desertation on a youtube comment :)
Travis Smith has been handling Opeth's album covers and art since "Still Life" and yes, he's indeed excellent!
Thank you! Finally, someone who loves all forms of music without purist bias.
Their first 4 albums are nothing like their next 4 albums. Opeth is constantly changing, especially after they met up with Steve Wilson.
We need more of you in the world
Dude, i feel the same way.

Late to the party then
This song introduced me to Opeth as well - now pretty much my favorite band.

Cusp of Eternity is way better than this.
Agreed. Hope this album gets better with more time.

Opeth Review
Maybe its worth mentioning that im a drummer and that this influences my opinion alot. Im open for discussion. Remember this is MY OPINION not facts! Also sorry for some grammatical mistakes.
Orchid - 77/100
The first album of Opeth and from many seen as the best. I can understand why, especially for that time. As a Death-Metal band the songs were more complex than known to that date (with a few exceptions of course). But for me the album just doesn't make it. It's still good but not comparable to their later stuff.
Outstanding Songs: In the Mist she was standing, The twilight is my robe
Weak Songs: Under the weeping moon (that 5 minute fill just upsets me), Silhouette, Requiem
Morningrise - 80/100
Morningrise, very diverse and complex. Also their only Album with a 20 minute song. The people were expecting something like Orchid and Opeth came up with something even better. The feel to this album is more slow and a little bit more depressing (all though never the main theme), but also much more melodic then Orchid. This makes it so great IMO.
Outstanding Songs: Black Rose Immortal, To bid you farewell
Weak Songs: There are no weak songs but the score is that "low" because of the comparison to the later records.
My Arms, your Hearse - 80/100
The first concept album of Opeth and strangely most of the times the only album people don't like, which i can't really understand. It was never the album of which i thought about much or listened very deep into it but it was just fine for me, kind of like morningrise - i just listen to it, nothing more or less. Just a bunch of solid songs (and demon of the fall of course :) ).
Outstanding songs: Demon of the fall, April Ethereal Karma, When, The Amen Corner
Weak songs: Madrigal, Credence, Prologue, Epilogue
Still Life - 90/100
Second Concept album in a row.
(in a positve way ofc.)
Blackwater Park - 95/100
The majority likes this album probably the most or thinks of it as the best. It is just outstanding how much of an awesome album it is, the atmosphere created is just out of this world. The intro song, Leper Affinity, has just the perfect dark and evil start into the album.
Strong Songs: Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, Dirge for November, Leper Affinity, Bleak
Deliverance - 100/100
For me the perfect Opeth album (not because its considered to be the most death-metal one), but every song seems to be perfect.
Damnnation - 95/100
What an album to be just released one year after Deliverance. The softness, the depressing and melancholic mood are just right in place. Great example for how evolvement should work or what bands like to do, despite what their fans say ( *cough* *cough* Linkin Park). Pretty much a soft rock record but still the complete Opeth feel.
Outstanding Songs: Windowpane, Ending Credits, My Time of Need
Weak Songs: If i have to pick one I would say Closure
Ghost Reveries - 86/100
Very melodic album with the focus on one topic.
Outstanding Songs: Reverie Harlequinn Forest, The baying of the hounds, Ghost of perdition
Weak Songs: Atonement Years - it just feels like this song shouldnt be in this album, the mood is just way too happy or even orientalic a little bit. I could image this song to be in Heritage, but not in this dark album.
Watershed - 91/100
The last album to feature our beloved growls from Mikael.
Outstanding songs: Hessian Peel, Porcelain Heart, The Lotus Eater, Burden
Weak Songs: Bridge of Sighs
Heritage - 82/100
Man it took me LONG to get into Heritage. But im glad i gave it many tries. The overall orientalic sound and it's psychedelic riffs sure are a thing that you have to getting used to. Even though it's good it's nowhere near to their old stuff atleast IMO. But its what they want to do so im ok with it.
Outstanding Songs: I Feel the dark, Folklore, Pyre, Nepenthe, Marrow of the Earth, Face in the Snow
Weak Songs: Slither, Devils Orchard (just dont like it)
Pale Communion - 94/100
Strangely ive liked this right away. Don't know what I can say about it.
Outstanding Songs: Cusp of eternity, Voice of treason, Faith in Others (God this song is beautiful and so sad, just perfect)
Weak songs: Goblin, River
Sorceress: 75/100
The mixing was straight away one of the reasons that this record ruined the experience for me. The Snare sounds incredibly bad and overall is the bass way too loud (not the bassguitar, the whole bass-sound).
Outstanding songs: The Ward, Will o the Wisp
Weak songs: too many IMO
I'm commenting because im not hugely into the band yet, but i want to and I'm gonna use this as a rough guide as to where to start
@@tplouffe9226 Wow that's cool. I feel honored :)
Tell me later about your experience and your opinion.
PS: My score for heritage would probably be higher (around 85-90 i guess)
Longest comment ive seen
my favorite is still life but im just new on this band, I hear my arms your hearse, and damnation
Credence weak? How dare you!
Enjoy!
I don't usually pay attention to the drum plates but damn... These are worth a listen by their own
Watching this video the 10th time...Cant get enough of this song!
Also anyone else feel this? - Old Opeth clean vocal style - Eric Clapton-ish. New Opeth clean vocals - Jethro Tull-ish.
Heavy as shiiiit!
Should probably eat less ärtsoppa :)
My respect for Ola is now even higher than before. :D Can't wait to hear what the whole album sounds like!
heavy progressive/atmospheric/experimental rock, maybe, not heavy as shit please
Sure, it's heavy, but the riffs are super boring. Disturbed has heavier songs than this, like Decadence, and that song actually has some variation, unlike this song, which is just chug-chug-chug.
fool, heavy is power.
That chorus is exactly why Dorian is my favorite mode.
If the chorus is in Dorian what mode is the rest of the song in? Its very different cannot figure it out.
Song is awesome, as I expected. Opeth have yet to disappoint me. Knowing what the lyrics are actually saying makes it that much more evil sounding.
Sounds great on my Grado GH1 + dac.
Yeah, it's because my headset is duct taped together so it doesn't sit evenly on my head. When I hold it in place it sounds great.
Judge Lazar Most people have a bad quality headphones and listen to heavy compressed files.
Mine is nothing special, but it's not garbage either. I can turn it up all the way and hear it in the next room like it was a speaker.
STOP SPEAKING ABOUT MY CRUSH
I hope thats your GF now

Just got the vinyl for this album. Absolutely stunning from start to finish! I'm glad I''m late to the party. I can listen to it all with equal appreciation. I'm with Rogelio Pascual. Opeth is awesome with or without growls.
I would trade every single thing I possess in this world for that chorus to last two bars longer, it has no right hitting that hard yet lasting that short
Opeth: Creating masterpieces since 1992.
RUSH (COUGH-SPUTTER) "Am I DEAD TO YOU?!?"
Opeth formed in 1990, dude. But you are completely right nonetheless!
New material ,always a new eargasm !Can't wait for the album!
People saying they like it after they listened it a couple times * me instantly liking it*
Dude me 2...... the intro i was like it’s weird but cool, than the riff kicks in and it’s badass
rickychardzz yeah! I love it!
The main riff on this song is heavy as fuck and Mikaels vocals are incredible.
1:00 I cannot stop the headbang coming on
I hated their direction on the last 2 albums for a while, but I can honestly say "I get it now". This album is very, very good. I can't stop listening to it. And now I'm going back to Heritage and Pale Communion, and it's almost like I'm listening to it with a different lens so to speak.
My first time really hearing pale communion with mature ears was super amazing! Hope you enjoy it as much as I.
That is ace! And the last note is also the last note of every DTP track!
Essa banda me encanta, qualidade infinit, não consigo para de ouvir..........
The art of this album is the best one you had since Heritage
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKK, IT'S AMAAAAAZING
LONG LIVE OPETH \m/
I love the smoothness of the sound this album has. drumming has never been so soft and yet so menacing
1st listen: Wow this sucks
2nd listen: I TAKE IT BACK
Johsty Bach - Yeah, I gave up after the first time and then they performed this live and I admitted that I was completely wrong.
OK computer 😀
Right lol at first I was, wtf is this? Now I'm like dayyyyum!
1/3 listen ... ?
2/3 listen ... ok interesting!
3/3 listen ... I want to listen again!
Lol
This particular song is amazing. It's way heavier than anything else on the album. This has the brutality and angst of old Opeth even though theres no growls.
Just dug up my old Alice in Chains, Type O Negative, Black Sabbath, Death cassettes to ease the time till this shit comes out :D Help me more pls.
Some Moonspell or My Dying Bride maybe, Paradise Lost
Glad I wasn't the only one to hear a bit of Type O Negative in the song.
Still listening ? I never stoped listen Type O Negative.
now i'm hearing aic in the song so fuckin' much!
maybe some meshuggah? or old opETH, some swedish melo-death etc etc
This album is so friggin incredible. I’ve been listening to it over and over for the past 6 months.
Uh no, this isn't "evil"
That's actually the intro to The Moor
nice trip man :D
A great description! I love this song so much it hurts
Pretty odd thing to be in love with.
Only post Watershed Opeth record I've listened to is ICV (very solid stuff). Probably gonna give Sorceress a spin next, since the title track slaps so hard. Amazing combination of riffs and oh man, those vocals. Very Soundgarden/Alice in Chains.
yessss
It's nice to see you here :D
Btw, you did a great job with flux, i really like it ;)
aw thanks!
Dropped in to tell you you're amazing! :D
after seeing the comments linked to you, i checked out your channel to see what it was about, glad I did, great stuff man!
Opeth members all have a very enlightening musical connection.
Calm. Open mindedness.
True Artists and it shows throughout the Whole Opeth as a collective
I wish they made a bigger deal out of that intro , such a monster ballsy riff!
One if the best melodies ever made.
I like the variations in their compositions. The most matured music band out there.
Its like if YES jammed with Black Sabbath...
👏👏👏❤❤❤
The Angry Dudeist we dont know what you mean but still we just like my friend
I totally agree with you.
+Blake Bagnell It's easy, If you don't like prog-rock you won't like the last 3 albums of opeth.
Agree 100%
yea heritage was very good but these newer lack a certain magical atmosphere and progressive grace.
They opened the show with this song when I saw them a week ago! Them and the Sword kicked ass!
Im a huge Ghost fan, never been of OPETHs but this album.... daaaaamn its one fine sounding album.
This comment section is atrocious. Stay out of it if you liked the song.
(I loved it)
lol yes, the "bring the brutal vocals back" folk are ruthless xD
I do miss the growling, but I always liked Opeth for the clean vox. But, the shift in style does nothing for me. It's just a little too cheesy for me. I would have been happier with more of a Damnation-style continuation. Opeth feels like they gave up the very things that made them unique. And I can't get behind that. Good for them, though. I'm glad they still have fan support and they're doing what they want to do.
+thisisexile66 that's one thing that tore me apart..loved'em till heritage, but.
thanks for the warning, ill take your word for it
+Christopher Wood Well said mate!
