I really don't understand the hate. Are people just sour that they didn't make Blackwater Park 12 times? This is beautiful and is a nice mix of old prog with Opeth heavy but with a detuned twist. The fact Opeth are always changing their sound and evolving is why they're one of the greatest bands to exist.
Triple M I wouldn’t call it 70’s music. I’d say it sounds like it’s heavily inspired by it. 70’s prog bands wrote some really weird shit. This is just this just sounds like something new. Something different. I don’t remember a prog band writing music like this.
Growing up back then i would have had all Opeth's albums ( no CDs ) & had the chance to see them play , hell all my friends would have done the same . Course even if i had never became a musician i still would have done the same thing just for the fact they are one hell of a band . As Mikael often refers to us as the old man rockers he listens to the same things i did when it comes to what we called Hard Rock then it became Metal. In 74 we had to search the import bins at the record store & take the chance it would be like Sabbath or Deep Purple & in Europe they had more of that than we in the States did. Hard Rock , yes the early 70s were just that .
I'm just curious....they switch the style drasticaly over night dividing the fanbase and I'm supposed to automaticaly like it and have no other opinion whatsoever? Call me crazy but I just expected for a metal group to be playing....metal...but I guess that's just me....I guess everybody else expected a mix of styles that will through the years lead the opeth maybe even towards trance, house and techno genre...
1 - You're 5 years late to the party. 2 - Techno-Opeth? Bring it on. If that's what he wants HIS band to sound like at least I'll give it a try. Respect artist's integrity, you selfish twats.
If Opeth only wrote music to appease their fans, the same ''experts'' would be calling them sellouts. Opeth are my musical heroes, the only music group I have tattooed on my skin. There is so much that separates them from other bands, and one of those is they write what is in their hearts, and they write it for themselves. This is the reason that we have a flawless catalog of evolving epic music spanning 20 years.
The problem is they are not a metal band. Metal is one of the main driving influences in their sound, but so is many other styles of music. Opeth may have begun their career as a metal band, but a listener who understands the band and understands Mikael's writing could see this evolution being inevitable years ago. The core Opeth fan is typically a fan of diverse genres, not someone who exclusively listens to metal.
I actually really like this song and imagery in the video is absolutely awesome. I really enjoy the lyrics as well. Not the old Opeth I fell in love with but I enjoyed it none the less.
The Opeth of old and new seems like totally different bands. Amazed at how much they have changed yet they keep churning out good songs regardless of the genre. Blackwater Park is still my fav though, showcased both the heavier and softer side of Opeth beautifully imo.
im addicted to opeth... so despite the fact that this is not the style i usually love... yup... im still a Micheal and opeth supporter. Opeth are a group that was with me from years... i love them.
I like it! A cool direction that I can really get into and they pull it off very well. Didn't care too much the previous few but that's just because of preference. Definitely wasn't expecting this. I don't need another Still Life and neither do they. They gave us all of their albums, but their vision and musicianship can obviously give us all kinds of different things. I was hoping for a surprise and I got it. That big sludge riff sold me. It was the real deal. It feels a lot more like King Crimson or ELP and I can't ever hear enough of that.
Last couple of albums took a while to really sink in with me, and I reckon this will be the same but in a good way. My attention was grabbed right from the start though. There's something ethereally beautiful about this track. Can't quite put my finger on it but I was instantly hooked. I'll be looking forward to the album for sure. I can see why this might end up being another album that divides opinion, but as with all Opeth releases; I'll enjoy it for what it is.
make Opeth great again. I'm sure they can make a brutal album no problem but I think this album got me with mix feels. I miss the brutally on the first albums and that's what got to me when I was a kid.
Ever since Heritage I had a really hard time adjusting to Opeth's new sound. I liked Heritage, but never really listened to Pale Communion much. I honestly think this is starting to head into the right direction. This sounds much heavier than anything from Pale Communion, and I think it's some of their best work in years.
this is the best song Opeth has put out in years. If this is the sound they are going for now, I could get behind. I just hope they could experiment more with soumd instead of being so clean. But hey! This is improvement!
I don't know what to think, yet. This one will take quite a few more listenings to absorb. I love when music isn't Yay or No the first time you hear it. But that it takes a while to dissect it and see what's hidden under all layers.
I really enjoy this 70's prog (the really obscure ones) inspired metal. If you guys we're expecting long intricate death metal songs, just forget it. dude was wearing a MUSEO ROSENBACH shirt on the new album's "making of" video. Try to catch up guys, Mikael is not the same, but still sounds awesome. The passage that begins at minute 3:00 is outstanding.
This is hardly their best material so if you like this, the rest should blow your mind. Especially Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, Deliverance and so forth.
Opeth continues to create wonderful musical journeys. Haters get lost! From Orchid to Sorceress no other Death Metal/Prog band can even come close, oh wait they did create their own genre didnt they? It's called pure fucking Geniusry.
To be honest I've never liked opeth, never saw the love they get. I never thought the sucked, just never struck me as amazing as everyone says that they are. That said this song is pretty good.
Well, i'm not a big fan of the "old" Opeth. But THIS totally conquered me, instantly. Fans come, fans go. They've always been great musicians and it's a big risk to make that kind of change, and I understand those who feel abandoned. But I consider that they have not perverted their music. Exploration, questioning and the will to transcend must be respected, even if we do not approve. They are artists, not politicians who were accused of not honoring their commitments to the people. Treat yourself to a new environment, possible and unexpected.
Probably their best song in years, so I'll give them another chance. But I'll admit it's mainly because I'm still hoping for something half as decent /metal as Watershed.
that pretty much sums it up, though I really like the track after the second time listening to it. But still, nothing of the last 2 records comes even close to the old stuff regarding atmosphere and overall quality (imo).
Exactly. I wish they would've made albums in the style of 'The Lotus Eater' or at least 'Harlequin Forest' with less or no growls after Watershed. I will never hate on Opeth but I just can't listen to Heritage or Pale Communion. I'm not even going to try and listen to the new album because I just do not like the (fake) 60's prog rock kind of style. Apart from 'The Devils Orchard' the newer songs just sound like a Mikael Akerfeldt solo project to me and not like Opeth. Damnation sounds a 100 % like Opeth to me but this.. nah. To each his own, though, I'm glad they're still successful.
So Many Butthurt People who call themselves Fans here. If they leave theres more room for those who appreciate Opeths Work and Ambition to try something new. I absolutly dig this Song, its fucking amazing. Yeah Heritage and Pale Communion were weak but still better than most Mainstream Shit
***** I'm just annoyed by People that want a band to release one album again and again and everything that sounds different equals Shit. They should appreciate that the Band plays what THEY want and not what their Label or Fans want then to play which would be selling themselves out for the sake of Seling Records and making Money if one dont like a record then fine but then they shouldnt whine about how the band is now shit in their opinion or that its not Opeth anymore and stuff like that
I think it'd be the other way around and the only way to make that show better would be to add mastodon, gojira, baroness, tool/Puscifer and skeletonwitch get that heavy bass in there dude
I like it, but it's not what I hoped for from Opeth. So we'll see what is next. I have purchased every album they've released (I got hooked around the time MAYH was new) -- but I haven't desired to listen to anything they've done since Watershed. But Paradise Lost came back to their roots, even though I liked some of their gothy-rock era, as well as My Dying Bride kinda coming around. I'm hoping maybe Opeth has some sort of "return to roots" somewhere. Their first three albums are absolutely masterpieces in my heart.
I kinda like it, to be honest I havent love the last 2 albums, for me they lack the deep feelings they touched with splendid songs like in my time of need or hope leaves, not to mention the heavy ones, but its ok I can live with Opeth chasing a new "old prog" style ,I wonder if Axe still uses a double pedal
this is the nail in the coffin for me. i get that mikeal wants to do what he wants to do but this is awful. what a waste of talent. this isn't like old prog rock, this is just bad.
+Slipz Sanz their is no wrong opinion about music. but honestly if you listen to what opeth was on songs like porcelian heart and ghost reveries and then you hear this you'd see my point. they are too stubborn to admit that they honestly don't want to make music anymore but it shows in this song so much
In all honesty, you aren't a part of Opeth my friend, the beauty of music is exploration. And they're going into new ground, have you ever noticed that no two albums sound the same? It's them finding what they enjoy.
The thing is that all those newbies to prog rock are thinking that Akerfeldt is inventing some new musical genre and all the people who doesn't like this is a closeminded "trve" for Them. This is not bad,but isn't that good.
+Tonito 100% agree with you man, while I look like to hear some of the old stuff again I'm just glad that they are trying out different genres because it's going to allow new fans to come in who will discover the older stuff and possibly stay to try get some more of that. Get what I mean?
If you don't like it you got plenty of heavy/ death/ black/ progressive (which ever was Opeth sorted in) metal bands around, so let the fans who like it be happy and excited about it! :) They aren't getting any younger too, in 20 years ol' grampa Akerfeldt will still probably be expected to growl from the die-hard-pre-Watershed fans, hehe.
Well, this is different. Kinda has elements of Doom as well as the Prog. I am going to have to listen to this a few times to decide whether I like it or not.
Drastic style change, I'm more a fan of Still Life, Ghost Reveries and Deliverance, however, this track is still really interesting, remind me a lot from the Ghost band and Alice in chains (edit : and finally found which band it really reminds me : Mastodon !). The bass & drums riffs are awesome and groovy, I'll wait the full album to have a full opinion
I really don't understand the hate. Are people just sour that they didn't make Blackwater Park 12 times? This is beautiful and is a nice mix of old prog with Opeth heavy but with a detuned twist. The dislike button is in there for a reason You know...
Nail on the head there bud
yes we want blackwater park 12 times. acdc fans expect and get back in black 12 times
Paul reed Smith AC/DC fans are simple minded compared.
sorceress is for simple minded people
Opeth - The new exciting band to listen to in 1974.
So much 70s in this song. It's gorgeous!
Triple M I wouldn’t call it 70’s music. I’d say it sounds like it’s heavily inspired by it. 70’s prog bands wrote some really weird shit. This is just this just sounds like something new. Something different. I don’t remember a prog band writing music like this.

Here they come, them Opeth experts...

2 - Techno-Opeth? Bring it on. If that's what he wants HIS band to sound like at least I'll give it a try. Respect artist's integrity, you selfish twats.
+Đuro Razbojnik Metal has different kinds of influences. Deal with it. If this song had growl vocals you wouldn't be complaining.
If Opeth only wrote music to appease their fans, the same ''experts'' would be calling them sellouts. Opeth are my musical heroes, the only music group I have tattooed on my skin. i can see Opeth opening at Woodstock , smoking some weed and talking about saving the Earth
Alice in Chopeth??
Sounds like Opeth Watershed, Ghost Reveries and Heritage combination, also some of the band Ghost
something in the vocals remind me AIC.. anyway obviously i'm joking ;)
+Jared Dowty agreed
I’m a new listener to Opeth, and I love it! Now I’ll go back in their catalog and listen to the “growling” era.
A masterpiece. Full of such groove!
So great song. The low A tuning on the E string, and the ending slowly building, magnificent :)
This is a great song. Love the prog-meets-stoner vibe.
I'm a fan since Still Life. And this one didn't disappoint me at hall. It's heavy, soulful
I actually really like this song and imagery in the video is absolutely awesome. I really enjoy the lyrics as well. Not the old Opeth I fell in love with but I enjoyed it none the less.
I have the complete collection of Opeth's growls with melodic guitars from 1995 to 2008 and it's enough for me!
Damn the lyric and arrangement of this song is awesome!
I have never listened to Opeth before, and I actually love this (as you say) new style.
This sounds way better than I expected. Opeth can always prove that music doesn't always need growls to make it fantastic!
As long as you ignore the fact that their Opeth's best albums all featured growling.
Damnation is without a doubt their best album, and it featured no growling whatsoever.
Opeth meets The Sword, I like it!
more like ghost no?
yes, that to ...and Alice in Chains, Soundgarden & Mastodon.
Finally somebody who knows The Sword !
you guys like dissection?
cause I may have an album for you to check out, which will be the best album of 2016 imo
Yes !
I cannot wait for listening the whole album. In despite the heaviness they used to have, I still having a lot of respect for Opeth.
I like it! A cool direction that I can really get into and they pull it off very well. Didn't care too much the previous few but that's just because of preference. Definitely wasn't expecting this. mixed feelings....i didn't like the intro but after that song was ok...i really miss Blackwater park and Ghost reveries kind of style
This have Ghost Reveries vibe, and yeah, that intro is garbage
the intro was fuckin' awesome. i'm guessing that was the wonderful keyboardist, Joakim
Last couple of albums took a while to really sink in with me, and I reckon this will be the same but in a good way. My attention was grabbed right from the start though. Given this repeated listens over the last few days, and I'm starting to like it quite a lot.
make Opeth great again. I'm sure they can make a brutal album no problem but I think this album got me with mix feels. I miss the brutally on the first albums and that's what got to me when I was a kid.
LOVE IT. Catchy, heavy, beautiful. Can't wait for the album. Do whatever the fuck you want Opeth!
Wonderful, this is music with genialism and inteligence!
Jaw dropping , divine , sick , evil I'm short of adjectives
Another great track from Opeth !!!
Ever since Heritage I had a really hard time adjusting to Opeth's new sound. I liked Heritage, but never really listened to Pale Communion much. Great song, beautiful arrangements, little things, heavy! BEautiful drumsound.. overall sound is great, and very nice singing!
First time found this band, and it's epic...
did anyone else feel like at 1:01 Scourge of Iron by Cannibal Corpse was about to start playing?
this is my first opeth song I ever listened to and I have to say its a good gate way
I don't know what to think, yet. This one will take quite a few more listenings to absorb.
I love when music isn't Yay or No the first time you hear it. But that it takes a while to dissect it and see what's hidden under all layers.
First time a RUclips ad 'suggestion' led me to something good. This kicks ass!
I really enjoy this 70's prog (the really obscure ones) inspired metal. really strange..but i love it... unconventional song for a unconventional band!!!
Yeahhhh!!!!!!! Awesome song!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is the most metal peacock I have seen in my entire life
best opeth's song that I've listened to.
Pretty cool !
I never listened any Opeth song/album....
This song maybee will change that... :)
listen to their song the Grand Conjuration. one of their best. shows their main sound.
my personal favorites are their albums orchid and my arms , your hearse.
try in mist she was standing from orchid
and demon of the fall from mayh
D.E.L.I.V.E.R.A.N.C.E.
This is hardly their best material so if you like this, the rest should blow your mind. Especially Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, Deliverance and so forth.
i love this song.
I love the new prog style of Opeth :)
doomy, trippy, heavy, progy, lovely, groovy. Bong rips in a Haunted house
I'm a simple man . i see opeth I click like
I can dig it. I'm waiting for the day they make another album similar to Ghost Reveries though. That album was the shit.
love it
I for one like this a lot.
. this work is the harvest. the middle keyboard guitar parte reminded me of Devil Doll.
Now this is some good music.
Ich freue mich schon so auf das neue Album.
freaky
holy jumpin fuk...this is way beyond awesomeness...Way beyond good...everyone watch out this band is ALWAYS BETTER
I like this heaviness.
Opeth continues to create wonderful musical journeys. Haters get lost! From Orchid to Sorceress no other Death Metal/Prog band can even come close, oh wait they did create their own genre didnt they? It's called pure fucking Geniusry.
+MassiveKant You don't speak on behalf of everyone. And by the way, a lot of the comment section bitching would disagree with you.
To be honest I've never liked opeth, never saw the love they get. I never thought the sucked, just never struck me as amazing as everyone says that they are. That said this song is pretty good.
Can´t wait!

It's still metal, just played on saxophones, with a shuffle. :o)
It's a good song. Want to hear the other songs
Its fantastic! :D
Yeah, this is listenable, but it's so far removed from what Opeth are capable of (or _were_), that it's hard to not to feel disappointed by it.
that pretty much sums it up, though I really like the track after the second time listening to it. But still, nothing of the last 2 records comes even close to the old stuff regarding atmosphere and overall quality (imo).

Great song ! GIMME MOAR !!
This is great.
not too much into the song but that video editing is really well adjusted to it
I LOVE OPETH!
maybe the best song of their new era.

Watershed is truly a "watershed".
So when do they open for Ghost?
They can't cause pretty sure Mikael plays with ghost, It's a theory I have xD
+Ruben Mineiro haahha i always thought that too, i would be too crazy tho if it was really the case
saw ghost, opeth, and mastodon together in Saskatoon like 3-4 years ago
fuck that sounds amazing
I think it'd be the other way around and the only way to make that show better would be to add mastodon, gojira, baroness, tool/Puscifer and skeletonwitch get that heavy bass in there dude
Amazing song, lacks a bit of growling but still amazing
What the hell happened to Opeth? they were great before.
And now they are the greatest! :)
What happened to you, more like it. they are still great
They change styles alot
Akerfeldt got tired of playing Death metal and His fanboys became internet warriors, that's what happened.
No, they just became douches...The guy is enjoying himself, respect him 4 it or just go listen something else, live and let live!
oh!! men.. just i need this..
intro sound like emerson palmer pretty nice, and this chorus.and this bass! I very like new opeth, more keyboards guys!
This is just Dark!
Holy shit I love this
While not overly please with the last 2 albums (I still do really enjoy the music tho...) this is probably the best sounding Opeth since Watershed.
Great song!!!!!!!!!!
Cool stuff.
If I want more Blackwater Park I go listen to Blackwater Park! I don't go whine about it online.
This is cool.
I like it, but it's not what I hoped for from Opeth. So we'll see what is next. I have purchased every album they've released (I got hooked around the time MAYH was new) -- but I haven't desired to listen to anything they've done since Watershed.

Why am I still following this band? Probably the hope that at some point they will return to Ghost Reveries greatness. I should stop fooling myself...
Opeth is BACK !!!!!!
yeah doing more old progressive rock
I like this.

+Slipz Sanz bro i've heard garage bands with bettet production and creativity than this. sorry i don't think opeth is infallible.
In all honesty, you aren't a part of Opeth my friend, the beauty of music is exploration. And they're going into new ground, have you ever noticed that no two albums sound the same? It's them finding what they enjoy.

Nice!
The drum groove kinda reminds of "Bury Me In Smoke" by Down
damn this is good
yeeeeeeeeees

The movie is HD but the sound quality is low.
An epic fusion of Heritage and ghost reveries...i'm so curious!!!!
Opeth moj dobar drugar
wtf man
Tank you
Well... it got better after the disastrous intro.
