Ali Jackson - (drums) smiling face says it all. His smile speaks to me of gratitude and enthusiasm for being a musician and playing in one of the best gigs in the world.....
At the time this was recorded (2011) Nora was one of the few YOUNG vocalists to do this stuff. She learned alot from Bonnie Raitt about singing 'between the notes' and from the old jazzers about singing behind the beat. She also learned by being a very good musician. You can hear her on piano with (the late, great) Marion McPartland if you search for it. To me, this thread has moved to Europe since then, even Nora is doing pop. Search: Andrea Motis, Rita Payes, Alba Armengou and Joanna Casanova--all from Barcelona and prepare to be blown away! These girls all started at about age 16!
I totally agree with you, Barcelona is a nursery of fantastic musicians because there is a guy called Joan Chamorro who is the best teacher and also a good musician playing bass and all saxophones. Remember his name. You will see around him teenagers who play jazz in all styles, who know History of jazz, really fantastic.
Pure Genius All Around. Nora is a brilliant jazz interpreter/vocalist up there with the best America has produced. With the magnificent Marsallis back up band, she really "Shined." We need to see more of Nora and more of Nora and Winton together. Congratulations on one of the best performances in contemporary jazz.
Got to be one of the best solos ever from Wynton-Great easy trempo==giving himself time to think about what's coming and nail the ensemble or solo part. Great job.
Come Rain Or Come Shine (Johnny Mercer / Harold Arlen) I'm gonna love you like nobody's loved you Come rain or come shine どんなことがあっても High as a mountain 山のように高く And deep as a river Come rain or come shine I guess when you met me It was just one of those things But don't you ever bet me でもそんな風に絶対思わないでね 'Cause I'm gonna be true 私はあなたへの愛を貫く If you let me あなたが私を受け入れてくれるなら You're gonna love me like nobody's loved me Come rain or come shine And won't that be fine Days may be cloudy or sunny We're in or we're out of the money But I'm with you always だけど私はいつもあなたのそばにいるから I'm with you 私はあなたのそばにいる Rain or shine どんなことがあろうとも...
Come Away With Me didn't sell over 25 million copies because she looked cute on the album cover (in fact, she looks plain in that photo). It was all about her voice. You don't have to like her, of course, but she definitely made it on her talent. If you disagree, I have Ray Charles on my side of the argument - he was particularly enamored with her voice, and I don't think he cared what she looked like.
I dont like to compare artists doing versions of songs . Each brings special qualities. Besides __ where's the contest _____ but indeed I think you are correct ____ Ray took this piece to a level that will never be surpassed
I am not a massive fan of Wynton Marsalis, but I have to admit that this version here, with Norah Jones on vocals, is a supremely elegant rendering of the Ray Charles classic song....
Just for the record, Harold Arlen composed this song and Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics back in 1946, 13 years before the famous Ray Charles recording. Ray certainly put his stamp on it, but there are a lot of other great versions. For vocal performances, Dinah Washington's (which precedes Ray's) is a knockout, and there are great instrumental covers by Sonny Clark (with John Coltrane & Donald Byrd), Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, etc. Love this version, too, with a wonderful solo from Wynton and Norah "supremely elegant" indeed.
@@MrJpartridgeSince Ray Charles did this song 1959 on the classic album the genius of Ray Charles, Nora Jones also participated on Ray Charles last album. She adores Ray Charles and that could be a reason for her to sing this fine song. About owning a song, that would not be necessary for Ray Charles but he often sang this song during his golfen years from the end of the fifties to the middle of the sixties in a very slow but well arranged version.
People who say Monette ruined Master Marsalis are silly. He clearly had reasons for choosing them and moving his music in that particular direction. It's genius. He's genius.
Fair dos - I'll be honest, I had heard of Dee Dee Bridgewater, but not Stacey Kent, she does have a damn' great voice... Thanks for the shout out, how should I put this - It seems I have much to learn. :)
Norah Jones - probably the best jazz singer in the world today - meets Wynton Marsalis - probably the best trumpet player (classical and jazz) in the world today... Is there a CD of them together?! :D also, what miserable excuse for a human being disliked this?
Let's tap the brakes on Norah as the best in the world-Dianne Reeves would have a thing or two to say about that, but she does have a voice that is very suited for this piece of music.
She's lovely but she's a student to a lot of the jazz singers out there today. Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stacey Kent and so many others. The "best" is a bit of a stretch.
12 years later. Still here listening to this classic rendition.
Oh Norah... thanks for mixing this fantastic country style with jazz. what a great voice

Absolutely awesome. What a great combination! Love this piece. Two of my favorite artists!❤👏👍
Amazing version of this classic !!! Wonderful Norah Jones , Great Wynton Marsalis !!!
Just wonderful. Thank you Wynton. She is so righteous on this.

So wonderful performance! so wonderful solo.. it makes my knees tremble..
Johnny Mercer interpreted beautifully by these two fabulous musicians and their colleagues. Wonderful toe curling morning.

One of the most magnificent voices of my time....
Come Rain Or Come Shine
(Johnny Mercer / Harold Arlen)
I'm gonna love you like nobody's loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain
And deep as a river
Come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me
It was just one of those things
But don't you ever bet me
'Cause I'm gonna be true
If you let me
You're gonna love me like nobody's loved me
Come rain or come shine
Happy together, unhappy together
And won't that be fine
Days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or we're out of the money
But I'm with you always
I'm with you
Rain or shine
👏🏿👏🏽 Such an amazing arrangement....

Wynton has one powerful embouchure. Beautiful piece...
I'll bet he's a good kisser
no one can sing this song with soul like ray did!!

Beautiful

not even close this song belongs to Ray Charles
Just for the record, Harold Arlen composed this song and Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics back in 1946, 13 years before the famous Ray Charles recording. Why no one applauded when Wynton finished his solo? NOT COOL, people. AMAZING.
No one applauded when Nora's first solo segment ended either. What's the difference?
Look out, it's the Jazz Police
Maybe to not clap over Norah?
Love Norah 💘
Just love Norah Jones
kyaaa.. food for my soul!!!!!!!
I wouldn't say she's the best but she's definitely quite good.
You're right, she's not the best. She's as overrated as Diana Krall.

She's lovely but she's a student to a lot of the jazz singers out there today. Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stacey Kent and so many others. The "best" is a bit of a stretch.
@MrJML20 -_- shows how much you know about brass instruments... or music
