Great guide man. Super easy to hear the instructions, see the information and generally understand. Really appreciate the quality of information delivery.
Doug, good overview of the Penoff software. Folks need to watch out for some ebay programming cables, my buddy got a miswired one and it blew my BBSHD controller as soon as I plugged it into my bike. Never had any issues with the programming cable I bought from Luna. Nice Stab Garbanzo, I have been jamming on a 2007 Stab Deluxe with a hot-rodded BBSHD from Luna for the past couple of years, also with white wheels. The Stab is definitely a bike that can handle everything the BBSHD can put out, no flexing or wobblies. I was advised to get the 36 tooth Lekkie narrow-wide chainring, and ditching the stamped steel Bafang chainring before I ordered my BBSHD kit. With a 9-speed 11-34 cogset it goes anywhere. Even with 3 big screws mounting the battery rack to the frame (your "riv-nuts" are a great idea), I have been using two nylon & Velcro straps to keep my battery secure, but as you said in your build video, the under-downtube mounting keeps the center of gravity low for stability.
You can't set the current limit higher than the value detected (the one you see on the right). This was done to avoid errors. If you send the controller higher value, it returns an error. That's why I programmed it to limit like that. That my config program by the way. :) I think I should make a newer one that has better compatibility with Win10 and I might try to add functionality for the new mid drives with torque sensor if I figure out how it works.
I think the current consensus is that the "Speed Limit%" is a limit on the BBS motor speed (rpms) rather than the road speed. It affects at what cadence the motor stops providing assistance. The maximum rpm (at the cranks) for a bbshd is 130-150 rpm (depending on voltage). So the Speed Limit% should be set to a level that assures that it doesn't start cutting off or ramping down before you reach your normal or somewhat above normal cadence. These motors like to run at high rpms and putting too much power in at low rpms can cause them to overheat, especially the BBS01 and 02. The HD has much greater heat dissipation ability and is much more "bulletproof" I hear.
Thanks for sharing. I'm using 52V battery however the tool says the nominal voltage is 48v (as shown in your video). The highest option in the pulldown for voltage cutoff is 43. Shouldn't it be higher for 52V (maybe ~46 or 48?
Wow this has opened up a lot of possibilities with the motor I already have. From what I can understand the Bafang BBSO2 1000 watt is the same motor as the 250 watt with different settings? At present I'm bored with 40 km I need to go faster, brakes tyres and suspension all been upgraded to handle road speed. so do I change settings to 9 level pas, and speed to 99km, do I need to change watts? I'm not racing just commuting so throttle on is gradual, does that fiber gear need to be converted to brass or alli.
Very useful, thanks. I found that I needed to turn the bike battery on to be able to read the flash. In the PDF which was part of the config tool download it says specifically don't have the battery connected when connecting a computer.
I'm glad u used a good microphone. So many reviews have horrible sound. Excellent detailed step by step instructions. Thx. Btw. What is benefit of using modified software vs stock bafang config tool?
I recommend these. They are rubber backed and you can really cinch them down cause they don't slip. They are long enough to go completely around the bike frame and the battery. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DNFIPAK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks for the video and info. Really helps. I have a BBS02B one of the newer 750W kits. I purchased the program cable from amazon. Getting the USB driver and port on win 10 can be a pain. If you are using this type of setup, just keep searching google for different drivers. I tried 6 different ones and one them worked. But each win 10 is not the same. On my laptop which is 1 month old with win 10 the same driver did not work. So I tried several again and got one that did work. Not sure why but this is my experience. Just keep trying as I did and you will get it. I set my display to 99 MPH and 9 levels of PAS with 9 on my throttle. I have a TREK 2019 Merlin 5 with 29" tires. I am getting over 30 MPH on throttle only and in PAS 9 lowest gear just hitting 38.5 MPH. It seems and feels very fast just nice to know what it could do. I ride most off road in Tucson AZ and ride around 12-15 MPH 20 mile trips everyday.
Are you aware that there is an app called SPEEED which works with a smart phone-no need for a laptop. However, I have used this twice and twice it resulted in disabling my PAS without knowing why? I would dearly like to know as it involves quite some extra cost to get it functioning again. Right now, I need to reduce the power setting for my PAS 4 and 5 but am afraid to use SPEEED again in case I lose my PAS?
Hi. I've got ax similar set up. Note that I'm getting better, I'm hitting the battery when landing and compressing the shocks over 70 percent or so. Have you the same issue? Have you ever landed and compressed shocks such that it caused the wheel to brake and or hit battery hard enough to cause damage?
will setting the speed limit on my display to say for example 99kph, will this make my motor try to push harder and harder until it blows? or will it just go as fast as it comfortably can and stay at consistent top speed? Or should i just keep my speed limit set to a "safe" speed? Really dont want to blow this thing.
yea bro same here, i know it s set to 41 but sometimes mine doesn t want to assist when it reaches 43, it s better to set it to the lowest i can, because in case of emergency i d rather stress the battery a bit more than having to be a kangaroo, and when i see it s close to 41 i can charge it without waiting for it to be killed by the controller.
If I get a "thump" when initially engaging throttle or PAS would adjusting and slightly lowering the "start current" alleviate that abruptness of initial power delivery and get rid of the initial thumb throttle / pas engagement thump or clank that I experience? I'll have to get a programming cable and give it a try but jsut wondering if you happen to know. Thanks for a great video!
Hey. I hope you see this comment. I have been all over RUclips trying to find a fix for EXACTLY what you described. I haven't tried lowering LVL-1 of PAS yet. If the motor had soft start/soft engagement where it would take the slack up in the freewheel, chain, etc., before going all out, that would be great. I hate that initial thud that hits like a brick each time motor engages. It makes an awesome mid drive system feel just a little bit like junk.
Hi ,,, So if i put a 52v on my bike i will need to change the cut off voltage or will it be fine at factory settings for 48v so i can use both ? Thanks
Great vid. Unfortunately, I hooked on a cable I got off eBay and almost immediately, I smell something burning. Next thing you know, my motor doesn't work. Think my controller is fried ...
I have the bafang bbshd and I really like it. Lots of power and of course mid drive so you have the gears. Thanks for the video. I hope you make more. How are liking the bike so far? I'm getting about 1600 watts peak. I bought it set up though I can't take credit for building it.
Wheel diameter is the rim size? If your tire was 12" thick you would go faster than a 1" thick tire, if both were on the same rim size and both spinning the same rpm. Shouldn't it be the tire outside diameter? Am I wrong?
I have a BBS02 and the throttle speed is programmed to full speed. Since I live in Europe, I would like the throttle's max speed to 6 km/h, but that option is not available in the display's menu. Can I do that using this software?
I have a Bafang M600 seems the factory has locked out all capability to program it. i want to set the power levels %, power level 1&2 are all but nonexistent then power level 3 and you are off to the races. would appreciate any info you may have on the M600 programing.
i actually broke my c965 by crashing it into the ground. then got the dpc-14 which is the same as the 850c, i wish i got the dpc-14 from the beginning. paid about $100 Canadian on aliexpress
Anyone know if this cable will work with the new style connections bafang is using with the metal twist on connections. Mine does not just pull apart as listed.
i check the battery, checked the connectors, and changed the display. Bought this cable to see if its the controller, dont see it read the info in the bottom right. Is this the culprit of my issue?
Great video. Any suggestions on how to adjust my bbshd pedal assist so it stops immediately after i stop pedaling? The motor continues to run for 1-2 seconds after I stop and it is becoming dangerous, especially trail riding. Any thoughts on how to fix this? U
You got the low voltage levels completely wrong a 52 volt battery should be 39v. Your BMS will stop your battery from going to low anyway so your value just limits the distance.
14 x 2.8 v is 39.2 volts. Your pack will not last long discharging that low. 3.7 v is recognized as best for long term battery life. Top charge of about 57v and discharge to 51v. Do what you want but if you charge to 4v per cell and discharge to 3.7v per cell you could see many years of battery life. A 52 v battery is 14 cells in series. If you need more range buy a larger ah battery- not discharge it so deeply.
Late reply. The only solution i found is to update the firmware. Look for bbshd over voltage on endless sphere and follow the tuts. Hope it helps tho you prob solved by now.
Sorry, but pedal assist mode is supposed to do nothing. At 0 you are simply using the speedometer, 0 mode is for going downhill without using the motor, as this saves battery.
horror780 diy e bikes can be more powerful than prebuilt ones for the same amount of money. I'm my case I peak out at 1500watts. But if you don't have the time or patience, then a prebuilt one is best.
if you don't have the time or patience, then you can delegate building one for someone experienced, maybe your local bike shop - I think ti still can be cheaper, and for sure more powerful :)
I kinda did a compromise between the two options for my first bike. I figured out the specs and frame and all that I wanted for the bike, then had a Chinese factory build the whole bike and ship it to my door. Now I'm building another bike, but making it all myself, very similar to the video above, but with a Banshee Scream frame, BBSHD, shark battery. I have to agree, a prebuilt bike would have been pretty meh value for money, especially for me since I live in EU where most shop bikes are limited to 25kmh/15mph, so basically a running speed...
The pedal power is excessive on 9 and causes crashes. It seriously amplifies any part of a pedal stroke, maybe if your wheel is straight and you are ready for the surge. Lots of people forget and can launch themselves into big trouble with wheel turned or in tricky conditions.
@@copperhead891 I get what you mean. Without torque sensing and also because of lag, setting 9 is not predictable for someone who wants to pedal often. I haven't ridden one but I'd probably pedal with an assist level that made it feel slightly easier than normal but then use throttle for when I want full control or full power.
Great guide man. Super easy to hear the instructions, see the information and generally understand. Really appreciate the quality of information delivery.

You can buy new controller and 72volt battery and push bbshd to about 3-5kw of power peak

Doug you have to take off the plastic shipping cover on the display! Very helpful vids man
Luna cycle sells nice long Velcro straps for securing your battery and they look a lot nicer than a metal hose clamp.
