  • This is the third part of a six-location adventure where we track down Tunisia's hidden Star Wars film sets in the south of the country, around Nefta and Tozeur.
    Today we head to the sand dunes of Garet Sidi Kremis near Nefta. The site is familiar to Star Wars fans as the Tatooine Dune Sea lifepod crash site involving C-3PO, R2-D2 and Stormtroopers. It was also the location of the krayt dragon skeleton from Episode IV: A New Hope. Preparations at the location began in mid-February 1976 and the last day of filming there was 25 March 1976. The fiberglass krayt dragon bones were the only bits of prop left behind, and we got to see some on this visit!
    After exploring the dune pod crash site we then head to the nearby salt flats of Chott el-Djerid. Here you can find one of the most iconic Star Wars sites: the Lars homestead. This harsh landscape was used to represent the barren salt flats used by the moisture farmers on Tatooine in Episodes IV, II, and III. The filming history for this area is long and complicated. I explain more in the video!
    Be sure to watch until the end to be in with a chance of winning a prize!

      Yes, thanks Mark! Let's hope we can do something to help get these sites the maintenance they deserve once this pandemic is over!

    The Lars Homestead set on Chott el-Djerid is the cradle of the Star Wars universe. Visiting this remote location, especially at sunset, can be a spiritual experience for Star Wars fans. The collective contributions of the Save Lars volunteers (2012) and the Discover Tatooine team (2018) have preserved the homestead dome.
    To avoid getting stuck in the sand like Oscar, Galaxy Tours recommends hiring a camel to visit the Dune Sea crash site in the Garet Sidi Kremis (Nefta dunes) area. The efforts by local bedouin to discover the remnants of the original fiberglass skeleton in these shifting dunes represent no small feat.

    Did not go to the pod crash site, but yeah, great stuff! And I understand what you are saying by neglected regarding Lars homestead, but it hasn't really been neglected - you've had fans rebuilding it, and more importantly not vandalising it by taking those doors. It just gets heavily weathered there, and probably isn't made out of the best materials. I guess turning it into something more official would be nice though as you say.

    • @ScafidiTravels
      @ScafidiTravels  3 года назад

      You're right, it's great that there have been fan-led initiatives to refurbish the Lars homestead site. But we need something more official to cover all of these locations. Hopefully I'll be able to update you all if / when something gets announced!

      For the Krayt dragon vertebra? I think she asked for about 150 Dinars, roughly USD50. A significant amount of money in these parts!
