- A deep dive into Darth Vader's mechanized body and helmet and fully realize in 3D! Enjoy!
Darth Vader’s suit followed an ancient Sith tradition where the warriors of the Dark Side of the Force would clad in heavy armors, and because of this, it also incorporated many aspects of Sith alchemy to help with Vader’s weakened physical strength and vitality, after his near-fatal duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The helmet is the most important part of his suit. The obvious purpose it serves is to help Vader breathe, but it’s far more complex than that.
The helmet is made up of three parts; a protective neck gaiter, the primary mask, and the outer shell.
Designed to be intimidating and to strike fear into the opponent, Darth Vader’s helmet is a combination of both Sith tradition and technology, custom-fitted to Darth Vader’s head, and designed to be removed as needed to show his face.
The gaiter helps support Vader’s neck, has a nutrient feeding tube, and this is also where his iconic and booming voice is processed and projected. The mask is the most intricate part of the helmet.

and yet his suit was a shit, darth vader was a burdening coffin, limited mobility, and he was in constant pain every time. His life support system was literally exposed in his chest, and was designed to be succeptible to electricity (palpatine's power). He tried to cure himself through meditation and force healing, but then palpatine constantly exercised an oppressive dark force influence to prevent his healing. Also, vader was resorting to the dark side of the force to cure himself, not a very smart move since it was too difficult to make it cure and needed extreme concentration, something that he didn't have. He also wanted a better arnor, but it wouldnt be any reason for palpatine to purposedly choose a poor tech armor and poor tech medic droids for vader from the start if he would let him improve or change his armor in the future. Palpatine WANTED vader to be weak and in constant pain and struggle, so he didn't let vader switch to a better one, which would be wonderful for vader and, if he still decided to help his son in the final confrontation and turn back to the light side of the force, he could have survived and became a powerful jedi master once again, maybe even preventing the new order to exist.
Great Infor! I didn't realized that Palpatine was on the one responsible for making the suit difficult for Darth Vader.
@@Halfscreen you could fixate/pin this comment so everyone gets to know this
@@mysteriumxarxes3990 Done.
@@Halfscreen thx
Palpatine could have perhaps wanted Vader to be in constant pain, so that it reminds him of his hate towards Obi Wan and the Jedi Order, so he stays in the dark side.
You think Vader would have turned to the light side earlier if he didnt feel his pain anymore?
This is scary af seeing all the small parts inside him that were machine. I always thought it was just the limbs, not most of his internal organs, eyesight, and joints that were mechanically replaced. The poor man lost so much to gain nothing.
He gained a few things a fearsome reputation intimidating armor and increased strength and speed
I dont know about speed. The suit was said to be outdated at the time he donned it. It was kept extremely painful for him to keep his rage constant. It was a way palps was able to keep him under control so I think it hampered his speed as well.
@@chasevids14 maybe not speed but he’s certainly has a sort of indefinite stamina you can only expect from a machine.
And everything was done without anesthetic.
He lost his humanity which made him cruel and ruthless. He maimed his own son and indiscriminately killed numerous people in addition to destroying Alderaan.
It also has been stated that the armor was purposely made very cumbersome and uncomfortable by Palpatine as punishment as were his prosthetic limbs. But the pain caused by the suit’s uncomfortableness fuels the dark side for him. And having to reinvent his style of combat to work around the limitations but also maximize the abilities of his suit he literally became one of the greatest duelist.
I'm glad someone else knew about this. It was also said that the suit kept Vader from reaching his full power because the Emperor was fearful of that. They had better technology at the time but Emperor Palpatine purposely that antique technology into Vader just to hinder him.
@@angusrumplemeyer1791 I’m seeing a running theme with Palpatine and downgrading every bit of technological advancement in the empire including his own apprentice. Their greatest achievement being the Death Star but that was overkill at its greatest as a fleet of star destroyers would be more than enough to leave a planet scarred for centuries and sends a stronger message of fear than blowing up a whol damn planet
If I remember correctly in The Rise of Darth Vader book, Vader also asked the Emperor to be put in charge of his own upgrades, which would explain why he was slower and less acrobatic in his duel with Obi-Wan in A New Hope than he was in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
fuels the dark side? well partially, it actually fuels a state of constant anger and anxiety, not letting him think better before acting, and make him weak

I have been an orthopedic technician and Star Wars fan since 1996. I am impressed with how many functions that were explained and still work today. The legs limbs similar to prostheses from a German company owned by Otto Bock. May the legs be with us, always
It's crazy you mentioned that because I've been seeing cybernetic prosthetic limbs that are fully functional obviously there's probably a weight limit and whatnot with them but they have full range of motion and some of them even have sensors attached to simulate touch and other forms of haptic feedback
The future does indeed look like Vader. That’s exciting and scary all at once!

Personally, I've always seen Vader as a tale of how 1. the darkness will always try to sneak up on you 2. No one is too far gone to be saved. and 3. How one's emotions should always be tempered by rationality. Anakin had fear because of his dreams which were vague, Palpatine used that fear to push him, and if Anakin had stopped and thought about it he would realize that Yoda was right when he said that the future was always changing and that the dream could have been only one possibility of what could come to pass.
Good observation.
Exactly
That's basically what all of Star Wars is supposed to convey. The Sith symbolize the bad life.
Can people truly be forgived for their crimes no matter how cruel and brutal they might have been? If Darth Vader was a serial rapist instead of a cold blooded killer, would we have less sympathy for him? Would fans or directors still give him another chance at being good? Clearly killing is worse than rape, but it doesn’t sound like it if you make Vader a rapist instead of someone who slaughtered Jedi. What if he raped Jedi instead of killing or torturing them? Would he still be redeemable?
@@jclive2860 I would say yes. Rape isn't irredeemable either.
He could heal himself slightly if he was able to hold onto hate and anger, but it was always fleeting and never lasted.
Yeah, when he healed himself and felt that he could use his lungs again he got to excited and happy, that he let go of the hate healing him. So the results faded

@@Halfscreen A very creative response!
Obi-Wan: "You were the Chosen One! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them. Bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness."
Darth Vader: "Tis but a scratch"
Ahhh...an excerpt from The Monty Python version of Star Wars which unfortunately was never written🤣
"On second thought, let us not go to Mustafar. Tis a silly place."
I love that in the lore of Vader, he intentionally doesnt incorporate anesthetic of any kind, so he's in constant agony. I imagine all his life support and prosthetics were installed with him feeling everything. He does all this to keep him close to the dark side, and out of hatred for himself for killing Padme. Vader is hardcore incarnate.
But he loves chill time in bacta tank … can’t blame him.
Holy shit you went deep there at the end buddy.
Well done overall!
Can't help myself.
Seeing the suit broken down makes you realise just how painful an existence Vader lived.
I remember an interview George said that he intentionally left things open and unexplained so that fans of Star Wars would be able to use their imagination. He was inspired by the old serials. It was never the why or the how, it was just about the storytelling, and how he wanted people to be immersed in the world of Star Wars
That make sense. Similar to 2001 where Kubrick made the movie a bit more ambiguous.
But he also admitted that Star Wars is made for a childrens audience. I honestly don’t think children have the cognitive ability to critically think like this in my opinion.
@@jclive2860 And then his audience grew up and added onto the SW mythology over the years.
It was my understanding that while the primary objective was to keep Vader alive, the very close secondary objective was to cause constant pain and discomfort. This stemmed from Sidius's hatred for the failure of his student and acted as a constant punishment. The pain was a big driver for Vader and one reason he became so powerful. Not sure if that's cannon or not, but I was surprised to not see the theory included.
Excellent video.
3:12 I was always under the impression his suit was NOT extremely sophisticated. Palpatine purposely had lower grade systems installed so he would be dependent on the Empire for "tech support" and in a constant state of pain to amplify the his Dark Side powers.
well sophisticated by our real world standards maybe
@@BigMoneyGs No. I was talking about their level of tech. He did it to keep him in pain and under his control. It worked. Right up until he when sailing out of his throne room, down a long shaft.... Something I never thought about until now... why did Vader need Durasteel shin guards over his boots, if his prosthetic shins were durasteel anyway?
If I recall, Palatine specifically chose to use the incorrect metals for his prosthetics to punish him for failing, I assume that using durasteel is apart of that punishment.
To be slow and cumbersome so he could never challenge Palpatine. Palpatine violated the rule of Two and never intended for anyone to ever surpass him. When Vader failed he made him basically a tank but with flaws only he knew that he could exploit should Vader ever get enough courage to challenge him. He didn't however foresee Vader simply picking him up and tossing him down a reactor shaft.
Simply just extra armour plating as if his legs were vulnerable to attack he could be beaten more easier

Remember when Darth Vader was an imposing space samurai, who may have been able to travel in a vacuum, and the purpose of whose dehumanizing modifications, as seen in ESB, may have been to make him even more powerful, and not a burn survivor with a colostomy bag? Yeah, General Grievous got body modifications as his backstory later, but the main point is that some backstories are better left to the imagination. Beautiful work on the video, by the way, but l also love the RLM takes on the Expanded Universe materials in that they emphasize when an addition makes the universe seem smaller and less original instead.
No matter how any times I've seen the movie the ending with vaders redemption scene is still my favourite ending to any movie I've ever seen !!!! A true test of a masterpiece.

Most other videos describe his suit as a painful prison. This is the first one I have seen emphasize all the cooling and lifesupport features, and the cool engineering aspects. Its weirdly soothing. Like a car design demo.
Vader's Robot-Samurai helmet is mightily iconic. I can't help but think he might've looked more like General Grievous had the character been designed later, unrestricted in cybernetic form by having no need for a physical actor beneath.
About to finish Fallen Order and start Squadrons soon, and it's safe to say my Star Wars fascination has been somewhat invigorated again as of lately. So this video is perfect timing! 😃

Someone as severely burned as Anakin would never have survived without intervention, let alone replacing all his limbs. Third-degree burns over almost his entire body should have killed him outright, not to mention shock from the loss of his limbs and the gases he inhaled before he was rescued. It was surprising that Palpatine went to the trouble to save him.
Not with current technology, but remember in the Star Wars universe they way ahead in technology and with ability to heal

I've always wondered how he was still kept alive after being put into the suit after his dual with obi-wan
It was his self-hate and conflict that kept him alive for more than 20 years, even during the times when his suit malfunctioned. It wasnt just the suit but also his emotional well-being that sustained him. After Vader let go of his hate and turned on the Emperor, his suit was severely damaged and he held on for a little longer to ask Luke to remove his mask so that he can reveal himself. When Anakin died soon after, he was also free from the prison (I.e. the life support armor) that he locked himself in for so long.

Thank goodness for RUclips subtitles.
i got a book about his body that when obi wan first chatted to luke after yoda died he told luke that "he's more machine now that man" and also that he did NOT have leg stumps as he did in the movie revenge of the sith. also, according to return of the jedi after he throws the emperor down into the abyss you can clearly see (if you look closely that is) that half his spine from his brain half way down his back you can clearly see that it's ENTIRELY cybernetic. also in the empire strikes back when admiral piett enters vader's chamber you see his helmet being lowered onto his head ALONG WITH HIS MASK without any forcefield to hold any oxygen in place. ON A PERSONAL NOTE I HAVE STUDIED THESE 2 INCONSISTENCIES FOR MANY YEARS NOW AND I THINK GEORGE LUCAS SHOULD ADDRESS THEM.
I think we may see a different interpretation when the Obi-Wan Kenobi series air pretty soon.
A very well made video. Some of the subtitles had inaccurate translations but the graphics and the detail are excellent.
Something I've always wondered - Palpatine saved Anakin's broken body and turned him into a cyborg, to serve as his "tank". (rpg terminology). What would have happened if Vader took some of his organic DNA and cloned it, and just made another healthy Anakin, free of Palpatine's influence and machinery? (If this was explored in a non-canon novel, I'm unaware of that.)
I went back and tried to correct some of the auto-generate translation on YT. Thanks for the info btw!

You mad lad, you did it.
Vader is a fascinating character and his story is one reason I love the prequels so much. (Yeah, you heard me, I love the prequels. Sue me).
Parts of his skeleton are also covered with a layer of armour just to help support the massive weight of his suit. His legs are similarly reinforced for the same reason. The suit's weight forced him to retool his entire fighting style, as he could no longer perform the fast-paced, aggressive swordplay of Anakin Skywalker, and instead relied on a more defensive style with heavy swings when on the offensive. After-all, his control plate is highly vulnerable and needs to be protected during combat.
As for humans reliance on technology, well we've been doing that for thousands of years. When people think of technology they think things like machines or mobile 'phones, but really even something as a simple campfire or animal skin clothing is technology in a sense. Humans are way past the point of being able to survive without it.
You are right, I initially didn't like the prequels, but I feel it is still much better than the sequel. In addition, i think that is why primitive technology youtube channels are so popular.
What a great helmet design from the late 70s. Amazing work.
Glad you like it!
