A scroll saw is on my long list of tools I'd like to have. Thanks for taking the time to explain how they operate and for the tips on things like blade tension.
Great information Charles. Just finished a project which was pretty heavy in scrolling (video when I get time) which demonstrates the difference between someone as skilled as you are with the scroll saw and the kind of work amateurs like me.
I suppose I do have a question for your "Scroll Saw 102" or next installment. The project I did was an intarsia type project. There were a number of really small pieces which made it difficult to use the hold down while cutting. And with some crown tooth blades which cut on the up stroke and down stroke, is there a way to safely control the small cuts, or should I just switch to a down cut blade?
lots of good info. I'm Looking into the Hagner M18V or Excalibur ex21 16 inch. The price might be the determining factor so I'm leaning to the Excalibur, do you think I will regret not spending the extra money? Thanks Charles, Thumbs up.
Thank you so much for the review... a real man's review and perspective, important subjects well covered. You even touched a running blade without gloves. Other reviewers are wearing complete PPE even before there was COVID pandemic, just to operate a scroll saw. It looks like that Hegner uses the parallel arm system. Newer and fancier scroll saws uses the parallel link system, which is sexy but rather more complex, with more parts to break down.
Enjoyed your video... Just picked up a Hegner Multimax 2. The pivot arm seems to hit the pin protruding from the rear of the saw so I haven't turned it on yet. It seems to be in fairly new condition. Any ideas? Thank you
Good stuff. I am going to look at that adapter for pinned blade machines like mine. It should be considerably cheaper than buying a new machine. Your blade tension is quite high judging by the sound it makes. I'll try a bit more tension on mine, although im scared something will break (hopefully the blade).
+Willem Kossen You can go slightly looser but not much at all (again, this is with a spiral blade). I assume the sound is the same, but could be wrong.
I searched every where for pin end spiral blades and they do not exist at this time, I am how-ever working with a manufacturer in Canada and they are going to see if they can make some. I hope this works as my scroll saw does not like flat end even though it says it will take them. I love the spiral blade, there is no comparison in the ease of working a piece. I am a newbie and just loving it. Thanks so much for your video.
excellent totorial, thank you, I make signs of wood and I want to start cutting letters and figures with scroll saw, which I recommend. I am a beginner. Thank you.
I have an old RBI Hawk 226 Ultra scroll saw. I am having difficulty with the rear tensioning assembly . It is dis assembled and I am having problems getting it reassembled and back working again. Can anyone help?
Well done Charles here's a google search link on scrollsaw plain end adapters (for those that maybe looking for one) again as charles pointed out it depends on your make , model of scrollsaw as to what will fit your saw. my first saw was sears 16" single speed /pinned end blade, I purchased the adapters to use plain end blades, it worked but was a pain to use on fret work type projects (lots of holes to cut). www.google.com/webhp?source=search_app&gws_rd=ssl#q=scroll+saw+plain+end+adapter
Yes indeed their is a spiral blade that cuts in any direction. Also diamond blades that cut glass. I can't believe how much this Hegner saw vibrates! My 26"" Hawk is solid as a rock compared to this Hegner!

+OG Timbercraft I have't used an Excalibur but I hear great things about them. I don't want to give you misleading information.
+Charles Dearing Ok Thanks, I appreciate your honesty. Time to do some more research before I jump off the fence.

It doesn't vibrate at all. I have a wooden floor in my shop, and THAT'S what is vibrating. Thanks for watching.
