    I'm entry level. I had been looking at new cheapest basic scroll saws when I found a Hegner in a hock shop for an even cheaper price. Really glad I bought it.

    I have a Hegner M18-V that I bought in August of 1990. So as of now, it is 30 years old. I used it today for the first time in quite a long time. So long in fact that I needed to get out the manual to refresh myself on blade setup etc. Needless to say, it worked flawlessly. Are they expensive? Absolutely. When I bought mine, I paid $799 for it. When it arrived, my wife said, "you paid that much for that saw"? I sure did, and don't regret a penny of it. I told her that if you wanted to do quality work, you need quality equipment. At the time, I was doing a lot of scroll saw work, craft shows, etc. In fact, at one show, I had a lady ask me if I had cut that on a laser. I said I did not but I appreciate the compliment. I would definitely recommend this saw, particularly if the new models are anything like the old.

      Dick, Thanks for your input. Yes, Hegner is definitely a high quality tool. Hard to argue with quality. My Hegner is a 1984 and works as well today as when it was new. I appreciate your time to watch and comment. Scroll On!!

    I have been an owner of a Hegner multi-max 22v since 2008. I agree that they are very well built and reliable. That being said Hegner should make a few improvements IMHO. I would like a larger table and more user friendly blade clamps that allow for top feeding. I don't think that is to much to ask from a saw that costs north of $1500.00

      Thats funny but so true, I made my router table out of Corian with a 1" piece of MDF glued to it and with a Jessem Router Lift it works so well.

    Well, hearing my name was a very pleasant surprise. Thank you so much Paul. Your complaints have been my only complaints. Definitely not a fan of the cost of parts. I had help getting my Hegner. No way I could have afforded to get one on my own. I echo all of your critiques. I would add, that I'd like to have a bigger table though. I think for the average scroller the size of the table is probably fine. I just like to cut big. ;) Thanks again Paul.

    I got one of these when I was around 11 years old. I'm 38 now but they were selling these things at the Minnesota State Fair back then. My mom knew enough and listened to the dealer that it'd be something I could use that young. It and the base spent two decades in their original boxes. Funny enough, I got a Craftsman table saw for Christmas a few years after and used it all the time. Love that thing. Wish I had a SawStop everytime I use it but I've had it so long.

      Fearsome Warrior, your mom was a wise woman and knew how to shop for great tools. Hegner is a top of the line tool, hope you get lots of use from it. I know what you mean about wishing you had a Saw Stop, I would sure like one too but it is way out of my woodworking budget. Who knows maybe one of these days I can spring for one. Thanks so much for watching my video and taking the time to leave the great comment.

    I remember those contests from the winfield collection but I never entered one. I also remember looking at the Hegner and thinking that it looked like a quality saw. I was also looking at the RBI Hawk at the time as well but I don't think that they are even around anymore. Glad to hear that you won this saw and got the opportunity to work with it over these many years. Nice review, great looking saw and it was great of you to give Charles a shout out. I've known Charles for years and he is definitely a heck of a nice guy. Thanks for posting another video Paul. I love your style of video. Keep up the great work.

      Jerry, I know what you mean. Most of my better tools took me years to accumulate. Good tools are expensive and as we both well know so are cheap ones. Buying cheaper tools is sometimes the only way to get what you need and you have to wait until later to upgrade. Thanks for watching and for leaving the comment.

    Never heard of a hegner til yesterday, i went to a county surplus auction and there was one there no one bidded on it so i said $2.50. I bought the thing for $3 with premium and sales tax... Researched it today... About pooped myself... Trying to decide whether to keep it or not... Needs new bellows, and the pivot bolt on the bottom arm... But heck for about $75 bucks all in i would have the best... but then again for $75 bucks i could easily make a great profit...

      Cy, the Hegner scroll saw is great although expensive saw. I have used mine for 20+ years and have had no problems with it. Another saw that deserves attention is the new Seyco scroll saw. Russ Clarity uses one on his TwitchTV show every Wednesday evening at 7:30pm est. One thing to realize is that his show is partially sponsored by Seyco but regardless he really likes that saw. His show is SimplyWoodenCreations on TwitchTV. Hope you find the time to tune in. The Hegner saw is a tilting bed saw while the Seyco is a tilting arm saw. I don't think you can go wrong with either saw. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and hope to see you in the chat on Russ's show.

      Scroller Nation, True, Excalibur saws were very nice. I would also like the try the new Seyco saw that is said to be quite compatible to what the Excalibur used to be. I also like to watch Steve Good's channel for very unbiased comparisons between saws.

    Most people who would watch this would be expecting to know a bit more about the saw itself for comparison. Such as what a new one would cost. Weather its a DC or AC motor system. Features etc. I'm a Hawk owner from RBI and have used my 26" throat depth and sad to say RBI is no longer in business. However being a completely USA built saw it was picked up by another company and is back selling even much improved USA built saws. The Hegner has a good reputation but compared to others such as the Excaliber and Hawk I don't know which one would win out! The Hawk BM-26 sells for around $1400

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  7 лет назад

      rhshel, thanks for taking the time to watch my video and to leave a comment. Regarding the price of my saw, because I won the saw I wasn't as concerned as if I had payed for it but it is right up there with the Hawk and other top of the line saws. I mentioned that the motor is a capacitor start motor so that would make it an AC motor. While it is not made in the U.S.A., it is a high quality top of the line tool manufactured and imported from Germany so should by no means considered a cheaply made Asian import. Thanks again for your input.

    • @kellyvcraig
      @kellyvcraig 5 лет назад

      I sold my first Hegner (paid two, sold for four twelve years later) and bought an RBI for a couple hundred for the variable speed. The price was because the front cam was wore. A strip of tie wrap solved that problem and a repair with a new cam isn't too expensive.
      What makes my Hegner preferable, in my opinion, is the clear access to the lower blade holder, rather than having to reach around the tilt mechanism on the RBI.
      Any, just found a variable speed Hegner and will sell the RBI to offset the price (leaving a one fifty outlay).

    Mine seems to vibrate too much. I installed thin eva foam under the motor mounts which did help some. It does not have the quick release. Any idea why it vibrates so much?

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  4 года назад +1

      Robert, vibration is usually not a problem with a Hegner. How old of a saw is it? The year is on a silver sticker on the right side of the machine. What is it bolted down to, a factory stand or a bench? Does it sound like anything is loose? Does it vibrate whether you are cutting or not? Let me know and email me at: paulsmessyworkshop@gmail.com and hopefully I will be able to help you.

    • @theRussianJiu
      @theRussianJiu 4 года назад +1

      @@paulsmessyworkshop , it is the 14" dated 2002. Maybe the problem is there is no hold down assembly. I really fight with trying to keep the wood down.

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  4 года назад

      @@theRussianJiu To be honest very few scrollers ever use the hold down assembly, most remove it. When you have trouble with the wood jumping up and down it can either be traced to the blade or the technique. Make sure you have a sharp blade. How thick of wood are you trying to cut? For instance for wood that is 3/4" thick I will usually use a Pegas #3 modified geometry blade. I generally use either Pegas or Flying Dutchman blades. Technique can also cause problems. If you push the wood too hard into the blade it will cause wood to jump. Push gently and let the blade do the cutting. If you like you can email me at :
      paulsmessyworkshop@gmail.com if you have any other questions. I will be glad to help if I can.

    Is a hegner 1994 model like your worth 500.00 used

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  3 года назад

      Orlando, I guess it would depend on the condition and if includes the stand. It all comes down to condition. New they are well over the thousand dollar mark, closer to 1400 if I remember correctly. Hegner is a very well built machine. Mine is a 1984 and still runs like new. Another thing to consider is what model it is. You want to make sure that it has variable speed, most but not all do. My machine has an 18 inch throat depth, I wouldn't want to go less than that. Good luck. Thanks for watching and for your question.

    Paul, thank you for your review. I have a similar scrollsaw and have been frustrated for years trying to get it to cut straight. No matter what blade I use, it always seems to cut 10-15 degrees to the left. I have to turn my workpiece to the right to correct for that.. Is it the saw, my blades, or what? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I am on the verge of selling it and getting a newer (non-Hegner) scrollsaw. Thanks!

    • @paulsmessyworkshop
      @paulsmessyworkshop  7 лет назад

      Timothy, first off, thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and to comment. Second, don't sell your Hegner saw, it is one of the higher end saws out there. I know how frustrating it can be when the saw doesn't cut straight even though common sense tells you it should. On my saw I have had times depending on the wood and the blade where it runs every bit of 10 - 15 degrees from straight. Here are a couple of things you might try. Make sure you are using the right blade for the project, I almost always use a reverse tooth blade unless I am cutting really thick wood, like over 1 inch thick or very hard wood. I also only use a quality blade, usually Flying Duchman or Olson. I understand that Pegas blades are very good. Lastly make sure your blade is properly tensioned. When under tension you should hear a distinct high pitched sound when you "pluck" it with your finger. If you haven't watched it I also have a video on doing an upgrade to the rear tensioning adjustment on my saw. In that video I demonstrate the correct tension "sound". I hope this will help you. Please feel free to contact me if you need more help. There is a huge community out there full of ideas. Thanks again, Paul

    • @timothycalderwood5695
      @timothycalderwood5695 7 лет назад

      Paul: Thanks for the quick reply. I have a 1997 Multimax 22V. I watched your blade tensioning upgrade video this afternoon. Maybe that upgrade will also work on my Multimax because the blade tensioning arm on the top front puts so much tension on the blade that it pops it out of the either the top or bottom holder no matter how much I tighten them. Grrr! Basically, it is a fixed high amount of tension regardless of the blade! (Not a good design!) The one you showed looks like it works off the tension you set for the particular blade you are using. Maybe I’ll contact Advanced Machinery and have a “discussion.” Also, I will run some tests on my various brands of blades to see if one cuts straighter than the other. You have been a BIG help and certainly appreciate it. Tim

      Dennis, I agree the price is quite steep and out of reach for most woodworkers. As with most tools there is always a brand that is priced at the top of the chain because of quality or features, Hegner is one of those tools. I won mine in a contest years ago, had it not been for that it would have been out of my price range.
