UMK3 also worked like this: When you play as Scorpion, the last game he appeared was MK II, so, it is exactly the same phrase "Scorpion Wins" that you hear in MK II. So, Rai(y)den, Johnny Cage, Scorpion, etc., all are announced with the MK II tone as the characters from MK 3, are announced with a different tone, as the phrase was recorded for the latest game.
In MK Trilogy for the PSX it is also the same, but for the bosses, something has changed. I have no idea why.

Played the hell out of the PC version. That was some money well spent. And yes, it IS superior to the Saturn version, because installation to the hard drive drastically shortens the load times. My only gripe with Trilogy is that some of the sprites are of mixed quality, and that the Pit II no longer has a stage fatality, but that's due to them not wanting to re-shoot a bunch of new footage of each of the MK3 characters falling.

    • @NoClipMode
      @NoClipMode 4 года назад +4

The PC version also had larger sprites from what i remember. Closer to the arcade. But to be fair all the Saturn versions of MK were poor/lazy ports, often the same as the PSX when the Saturns hardware was capable of more. Capcom did things right on Saturn. And i completely agree with the sprite quality in Trilogy. It looked cheap with such large inconsistencies between old and new sprites/stages. Every character from the older games needed re-shooting, plus the dated and crappy looking MK1 stages badly needed updating, but they were lazy and cheap so they didn't get my money.

They look pretty even. I guess it would be more of a preference on which controller you prefer to play Mortal Kombat with. I love the Saturn controller for Street Fighter style fighters, but I actually like the PlayStation controller better for Mortal Kombat.

I swear I want to report every comment that Sega Saturn controller is better than the PS controller for fighting games LOL just kidding. But I do prefer the PlayStation controller for very fundamental foundational reasons such as the attack buttons being accessible by three fingers independently!
This makes instant hell murder in Street fighter so much easier to pull off and chain combos are also easier and more fluid because you don't have so much travel with your fingers from button press to button press...
Also I've never liked arcade sticks because the travel distance is just too much!! Although I did let a demographic of the fgc gas light me for a while until cats started winning Evo with PlayStation controllers...
BTW, I think I prefer the PlayStation version of MK trilogy because the PlayStation has a better sound processor and you can definitely hear the crunchiness in the Sega Saturn sound effects...
Oddly enough the crunchy sound doesn't bother me in Street fighter zero 3 on the Sega Saturn because the visuals are so drop dead gorgeous!! Not to mention the sound processor is definitely better utilized by Capcom than it is by Midway so I think the implementation is also a determining Factor...

He's not just one of the greatest fighting game players. He's one of the greatest video game players ever. Rank number three in the world on EverQuest and the only player in the world who could solo kill gods. In the top 1% on the mortal Kombat leaderboards. Absolutely obliterated every local legend at the arcade! And he was so good at Warcraft 3 beta he became a permanent beta tester for blizzard... Esse canal está como vinho, melhor a cada ano! Besides the transparency effect, the only thing i noticed is the voice sounds during the endurance matches. In the PSX version, all male characters share the same voice clips (i don't remember if this applies to Sheeva and females), while in the Saturn version, Baraka and Jhonny Cage have separate voice sets (at least, it shows in this video). Dunno if this had something to do with RAM limitation in the PSX or was just laziness. My only grip about the Saturn is that they could have taken advantage of the RAM expansion carts to reduce loading times, add Shang Tsung as a possible enemy on the towers (morphing means loading times), and maybe include these changes to the PC version. Still, great video!

It's interesting to see how close these ports are when you compare that with how the SNES versus Genesis MK titles had much larger differences between them. Although people complain about the dithering effect developers used on Saturn, I have a feeling most people would barely notice it on a CRT. It would be interesting to see a test for both either with a simulated CRT or real-life CRT with high-quality capture. I think if I had to re-do my choice for that generation (I was an N64 evangelist), I'd pick PlayStation, but I'm coming around to the idea that Saturn was actually a decent system that suffered from the erosion of consumer confidence (from 32X and Saturn) and SOA and SOJ's constant battles.

that's because both display the same resolution and number of colors here. Snes and Genesis didn't. Genesis had higher resolution and Snes 3 to 4 times more colors on screen at once, so games rarely if ever looked identical.
And no, even if the effect isn't nearly as bad on a CRT screen, dithering is very noticeable. On cartoonish games like Street Fighter is fine, even the Arcades use it, but on more realistic ones like MK it looks atrocious. On Saturn's UMK3 port you can barely see it as shadows are black and other colors are solid, but with MKT they just copy pasted the PS1 game to Saturn and changed the real transparency to dithering. There's a lot of it througout the game and it's very noticeable.

I never liked the borders on the health bars on the Saturn version. Also, the sounds are somewhat degraded in the Saturn version. Picture is slightly bigger on the PS1 version, no music when moving to the next opponent on Saturn. Load times differentiate between the two.

The best ports of the Mortal Kombat games that I would recommend are:
    1. Mortal Kombat 1 (Sega CD/MS-DOS).
    2. Mortal Kombat 2 (Sega 32X/Super Nintendo/Saturn/PS1/MS-DOS).
    3. Mortal Kombat Trilogy (Saturn/Nintendo 64/PS1/PC/MS-DOS).
    4. Mortal Kombat Gold (Dreamcast).
    5. Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Xbox/PS2/GameCube).
    6. Mortal Kombat: Deception/Mortal Kombat: Unchained (Xbox/PS2/GameCube/PSP).
    7. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (PS2/Xbox/Wii).
    8. Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe (PS3/Xbox 360).
    9. Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition (PS3/Xbox 360/PC).
    10. Mortal Kombat XL (PS4/Xbox One/PC).
    And 11. Mortal Kombat 11 (PS4/Switch/Xbox One/PC).

I suppose having a CRT television helped the presentation of mesh transparencies back in 1995, but on LCD monitors it doesn't fare so well. It's not as if they couldn't throw in some transparencies into the Saturn version, at least just for the shadows - VDP1 transparencies "ate" anything behind them that was also rendered by VDP1, but as shadows are usually an element behind the main sprites, they could have been safely rendered.

    • @YanooszPL
      @YanooszPL 4 года назад

Don't forget the VDP2 could also be used for transparency effects, without "eating" the sprites behind.

Audio seems to be a little better on the PlayStation, although they’re almost identical. It’s a little louder on the PSX, the announcer has a little bit more reverb, and it actually plays music during the tower screen (weird that the Saturn left that out). Graphically, they’re almost identical. The energy bars were the only slight difference I noticed. It seems like the Saturn loads faster. Finally, I know from experience, the controls are a lot better on the Saturn for pulling off special moves and combos. Dare I say it, I call this one a draw. The benefits of each version offset the drawbacks of the other.

    • @caseyvuen111

it is in fact a limitation of the machine. the saturn can do transparency on 3d objects but if it's a 2d element then the saturn can't, so they have to use checkerboarding. ultimate mortal kombat 3 barely have any transparency. in umk3, the shadows are just black no matter in what system, and smoke's smoke effects doesn't have transparency. the thing that is supposed to be transparent in umk3 is the health bar, when the bule decreases, the red is supposed to be transparent but the saturn can't do it, so it is still checkerboarding.

PS1 looks better visually, due to some transparency issues on Saturn. Not too often you see a 2D victory on PS1.
I’m guessing PS1 was lead platform, since Saturn is way easier with transparencies in true 2D, with PS1 games using the 3D engine for 2D games.

Without any doubt PC version is very very superior in many aspects, starting with NO loading times, higher fps, no compressed sound effects, customizable music. There are just few details that PC lacks to make it 1000% perfect, in example the moving MK logo at the intro which is exclusive of PS1 version, or the "attract" intro with flashes of many characters fighting exclusive from N64 version. Also idk why they didnt bother on giving those moving sparkles of glitter effect on the surface of the acid in Dead Pool and the water in Wastelands, and the movement effect of the red hot steel in The Armory. Those absent graphical details are a dissapoint, but PC version still rules.

  • @randomthings7997

So, basically, the only difference is:
    "Kintaro... winnnnns."

Regardless, both versions are infinitely superior to the catastrophic N64 port.

I think SS sounds better than psx. Shadows in SS are dots, while in psx shadows are full blacked. Those dots all over heath bar in SS are no good. Ligh reflection in SS are worse than in PSX, you can see that in the Soul Chamber stage 1:50. Also the smoke effect on Smoke is dotted in SS. Backgrounds in 7:30 are different. Chameleon is also dotted. I think SS can't show translucent objetcs.
