I got a DVD screener of this back when the film was new. I had the exact same reaction you did. I can't imagine ever willingly watching Gummo again, much less buying it on 4K.
CHH: "Can someone PLEASE explain this movie to me?!" Also CHH: "I enjoyed 'Jason Goes to Hell' and many other doofy movies out there. Check 'em out!" 🤪
Gummo has one of my favourite bands ‘Sleep’ on the soundtrack with 2 songs that play during the movie, so I have a soft spot for Harmony Korine’s Gummo & I met Harmony one time and he seemed like a pretty cool guy. But I feel like some people sleep
It's not far off but I find both of those a good amount more depressing. It's definitely in the same vein of a more realistic feeling look at the uglier side of society. A lot of it is shot in a way that looks like a documentary.
A buddy of mine showed me this and KIDS when I was 15 or 16 and both genuinely disturbed me. Haven't watched either since but I do remember Harold Hunter was in KIDS which made it a big deal in the skateboarding community at least where I grew up. I think they were important at the time for simply being pieces of counter culture. Forbidden pieces of media that not a lot of people knew about. Kind of like Donnie Darko or Eraserhead if you knew these movies you were in the cool rebellious kids club.
this baker had gravy on his vest, gravy on his tie, gravy on his pants, gravy all over him. so he went to his grave, with gravy on his vest, gravy on his tie, gravy on his pants, gravy all over him. that dirty old man. the main kids name is solomon. gummo is just the name of the movie. the soundtrack kicks ass.
Harmony was really getting the kids to do the craziest things for the movie . He’d bribe them with money on set 🤣 I watched a interview with the main 2 kids and bunny boy
Hahaha. Bro I've been a subscriber to your channel for years and this is by far my favorite video. You're reaction is hilarious. I saw this movie back in the 90s and had the same reaction. 😅
My problem with Korine and all those other "artiests" who, sometimes literally, threw shit at the wall is they had these rules that were supposed to elevate their craft and what it produced, then they all admitted to breaking these rules frequently. It's like they were just the precursors to the current "LoL, So Random" crowd. Also, "Herner Werzog"? Was that on purpose?
I watched Gummo back in the day when I was an edgy college student. It’s achieved cult classic status in my family. To this day, I’ll still quote the movie, but I don’t think I could sit down and watch it ever again. Did 24-hour party people ever get a criterion collection release? That’s the only movie I can think of that definitely deserves it that probably doesn’t have it.
Im gonna sell my 4k copy i think. Watched it last night and it's not my cup of tea. I've seen wierd movies before and thats not why I didn't care for it, I just didn't really care for the characters lol. Movie was boring imo. I am glad I finally saw it but man, I'm let down hahaha.
This was 1,000% the town i grew up in. He was definitely speaking for all these kinds of towns around America. Also, have you seen a film Harmony Korine wrote called KIDS ? Great Video 👍
This movie is playing in the background in DMXs house in Belly. That’s the only way I’ll watch this movie since initially watching it decades ago. It’s a shit movie pretending to be art.
Sorry to hear you had to take the hit for the rest of us on this. From what you described I’d feel like I wasted my money on this “movie” I don’t mind experimental films, but this just seems like gross and weird being mistaken for “daring cinema.”
For me, "Gummo" is a kind of sadistic slumming porn, a torturous snuff film without the cathartic ending. I can't even look at that image of the kid in the filthy bathtub with the spaghetti without feeling like I want to throw up. I can't help but feel that there was some kind of abuse taking place on the set -- which may be a testament to the film's feeling for "authenticity." I guess it's just not my kind of movie. (At least John Waters' early disgusting films had a sense of humor and style. No matter how you feel about watching a drag queen actually eat dog feces, Divine's performance in "Pink Flamingos" makes it all worthwhile: "Someone has sent me a bowel movement!")
ALL TIME CLASSIC! This movie invented the slice of life, guerilla documentary like filmaking that shows a light on the dark underbelly of America. Places like Xena, Ohio are very real and actual horror that is even more disturbing because it's so real. Harmony Korine is a genius, this is a perfect horror movie to disgust and scare you on the possibilities of what life can be for the poor, disabled, mentally ill, or all of the above. Really surprised you didn't appreciate this one more
I remember thinking the same thing when I saw this on cable a while back. It was just weird and gross and one of the "characters" and I use that term loosely says the N-word if memory serves me but it comes off like he's NOT a character and it's just HIM talking so I guess he's just a racist and if I remember correctly (I've only seen this film once and I've been trying to erase it from my memory ever since so I may be wrong) but he was wearing a cap turned backwards which comes from Urban fashion/culture. I also think this town isn't far from where I use to live and grew up, and I do remember every ten or fifteen years a tornado would run through there and knock everything down like clockwork but trust me that town might aswell have been on another PLANET cause I certainly didn't grow up around people like that. I was actually a little embarrassed to find out I grew up so close to a place like that. Harmony can direct, though, when he actually makes a REAL film, I like "Spring Breakers," and didn't he write "Bully" and / or "Kids" so he does have some talent. 🤷♂️
I’ve heard of this movie and all I’ve ever had was people telling me how strange and weird it is. I love weird movies but this was just bizarre from what I can remember because I’m sure I’ve seen it but just want to not remember it. Yeah I can’t watch this movie again. Animals are amazing and to just have them in the movie to kill them is disgusting you know?
Gummo sucks.....I hated it in VHS have no interest in seeing it on 4K. Harmony made one good film and that was KIDS....and he only wrote that, he did not direct it. The rest of his filmography is crap. Gummo never made any sense to me with the idea that a town would be at the level of Disrepair after a tornado. Must have been one hell of a tornado. Have you ever seen before and after pics of places hit hard by natural disasters? 4 years later they are almost totally rebuilt, usually better than before. This pile ....Trash bag Humpers.....Julian Pony girl....all just garbage.....but, he has a following so more power to him. I myself have no plans to ever rewatch it.....I can go to my grave feeling just fine with a single viewing. Trust me of all the people who die daily.....nobody ever whispered "my only regret is never seeing Gummo"😂
This is one of those movies that's only a "classic" because some pretentious hipsters talk about it like it's some gift from the cinema gods. Lame all the way around.
KIDS review coming soon….
In Gummo, they're eating the dogs, they're eating the cats, they're eating the pets of the people that live there..
this gets a 4k yet we can’t get Fright Night 2????
Great breakdown of the release, Christian. You rock! 🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
KIDS deserved the Criterion 4K release way more than this did.
One of those overseas companies put that out on blu ray not too long ago. I think it was Umbrella or maybe Second Sight. They put out Bully, too.
@user-by4ut5ug5o It should have been a Criterion release, that movie deserves an American blu ray release by now.
I have the mediabook blu ray.
Gummo is a classic. Love it. Gummo isn’t a person btw, that’s Solomon. Gummo is just the name of the film.
The actual killing of Cats has always put me off Gummo. Nothing should have to die for a movie.
no real cats were harmed during the making of the film
@ Are you sure? That was what I always heard about this movie 🤔 Thanks for the info either way, I’ll check it out.
@@Junk_World_Templar you really think that was real? lol.
I will never give a movie a chance that has animal abuse in it
I believe Gummo is not supposed to be understood. That's what makes it so unique that everyone sees it differently.
That bit of bacon taped to the bathroom wall is downright hilarious 😂😂
Saw this in the theater opening night. So glad this is in the collection now!
Happy Thanksgiving 🦃🍽 everyone

I always hated this movie.
I would like to watch this movie, but I just can’t do animal cruelty. Even fake animal cruelty.
Never heard of that movie! (Have a feeling I'm one of the lucky ones)
Gummo appealed to my friends and I back in the day because we have a town full of people here , identical to gummo
LMAO
Gummo has one of my favourite bands ‘Sleep’ on the soundtrack with 2 songs that play during the movie, so I have a soft spot for Harmony Korine’s Gummo & I met Harmony one time and he seemed like a pretty cool guy. But I feel like some people sleep
After Ive seen "A Serbian Film" I think I can handle this movie and others like a champ
Maybe you should watch the blu-ray of Salo (1976) to get some peace of mind.
Triple feature Salo, Cannibal Holocaust, and Goodbye Uncle Tom - just to calm your nerves lol.
Harmony, makes films about the people that no one else will. He makes brilliant films whether you like the story he's telling or not.
thanks for the review. I might check it out someday but it's way down on the list for now
I've never seen this, but if it's like Kids or Requiem for a Dream...I will gladly pass.

I was thinking that it couldn't be that bad... And then I remember who made it...
Why isn't Larry Clarke's Bully ever been released by Criterion?
We need to have CK and UB do a live reaction commentary to this film lmao😂
You should check out Mr Lonely. That's one of my favorite films by Harmony.
I sold it on eBay immediately after watching it for the same reasons; “Gummo” and “The Woman” (released by Arrow), brutal watch.
I HIGHLY recommend Ken Park

Hello 👋 it looks like a good movie 🎥
Such an amazing film.
This looks as weird as an early John Waters’ movie. Guess I need to watch it. 😀
What did you think of the sound track?
It's one of those movies you have to see to say you saw it, but if anyone says they love this movie I question their mental state.
Oh man this is my genre. Need recommendations? Hit me up haha
Salao makes Gummo look like a Disney movie.
Why would you recommend this movie, it sounds like a garbage movie?😂

Should have bought the Gregg Araki Teen Apocalypse Trilogy instead bro.
Now that’s a box set people slept on…

Criterion also put out Salo
Salo is an excellent film with a strong message and true aritistic merit.
