I'm in the USA, and have a region A, 4k player. The Panasonic ub820. Both disc work. When inserting the disc, it goes the a blank player menu, all you do is hit the "top menu" on the remote and takes you right to the DVD menu and everything plays perfect. Just wanted to share this.
Not only is the hi8 footage cleaned up but it’s a pure source, all prior home video releases were sourced from the 35 blow up converted back to video which added unnecessary film grain and murkiness. This is hands down the cleanest presentation on Blair Witch I’ve ever seen sourced from the original materials.
Actually that video to film conversion is exactly what i liked about it. Same with Thomas Vinterberg's "Festen - Dogme #1" which looks amazing like that and way nicer than it would have looked as raw DV version with interlaced 50i picture. The only thing they did with the Video8 footage of Blair witch (it was regular Video 8 actually and not Hi8) was making it look aged before it was transfering it to 35mm. Normally it would have looked way better.
I laughed when I first saw the movie. Yah, then my boss decides to put me in a security shack in the middle of the woods overnight by myself. I have respect for that movie now
It works with the top menu trick on the Panasonic UB820, which should be mentioned as many of us in the boutique community have that player. Enjoy, went through this and the documentary earlier in the week!
The Blair Witch is one of the prime examples I use for movies that are better on a specific format with that being vhs. The vibe of the movie fits so well with analog. Granted I wouldn't be opposed to getting higher quality versions but I will never get rid my vhs copy
I got the Imprint one as well. Not only because it has nicer box art and some special features that are not on the Second Sight release, but also because I support Australia. And so should you.
Looking forward to diving into this release over the weekend. Second Sight just don't disappoint. On the region-free point, definitely do it! With releases like this, you guys in the US are experiencing what we in the UK have had for decades! I went region-free for the Scream Factory F13 boxset, and am so pleased I did due to all the BRs included with 4k releases that I can watch with no problem
I saw this movie before the big reveal of it and in those early days of the screenings it was a big thing to discuss whether it was real or not just because the marketing was done so well to make it seem like it was. And it really was one of the first big virally marketed films.... even its IMDB credits listed the cast as still missing or something like that for the longest time after its release. There were countless websites devoted to the Blair Witch mythos that did not seem to tie into the movie at all, so that added to the possibility of it being real also. I worked at a movie theatre at the time and the hype was crazy.
Great review and super happy it's a solid release. Only disagreement I have is the comment on the art cards. I enjoy art cards as long as it's great art that's not found elsewhere in the release. I imagine it only adds nickels and dimes to the cost anyway. But I'll always vote for more not less art.
Yeah this movie hit different when I was 12 when this released, this movie creeped me the F out, I originally thought it was real, the one time you can see the witch floating in the air when they are running through the woods, haunted me for a while. I loved this movie when I was young.
Watched the Festival Cut yesterday and the 2 1/2 hour documentary too that was very impressive! Wow everything you could ever want to know. Liked the Sundance film festival stuff towards the end. Overall they killed it with this release. Great breakdown as always !!
I freaking loved the art cards!! The first time I've ever appreciated the cards. They're usually just stills of the film, but take a closer look man. The cards fucking rock!!
I was either at my last year of high school or about starting college when the movie came out. I didn´t know much but what my friends told me. That yes, it was a true story, the web site...and going in like that was really scary. To this day it is still scary.
I hope Studio Canal / Arthaus brings this version to Germany. Because i kinda don't wanna import it since that gets quite expensive. Also... the restoration kinda defeats the purpose of the movie wanting to look like found footage xD But i mean as long as it's optional and just an additional version, i'm fine with it.
This is exactly what I said. This Blair Witch boxset should set the benchmark of boxset quality and content we deserve for all movies....... Especially one as big as Elm Street. I felt so let down with the NOES box set.
Have have this coming in the mail and super excited now after this review. I also have the imprint edition coming so I will have both releases and region free bluray players are awesome.
I saw this about two weeks into its theatrical run and my friends were oh-so diligent on not spilling the beans on what happens. It was pretty enveloping and left me a bit rattled at the end. I remember getting up to leave after the house lights went up and seeing a priest sitting in one of the back rows. No joke. I'm happy this disc is a home run.
When you buy and install/format the PS5 Disc drive add on, you can assign the region to A,B or C. So the PS5 is essentially a region free Blu-ray player. You can only change the region codes back-and-forth 4 times*
Saw this movie in a packed theater the week it came out. Second row in the old style theaters before stadium seating. And I had a blinding headache by the time I walked out but I still loved what I saw.
Dude, I remember the website back then. It was all made up to make us believe these people were really missing, and the footage that was found was the actual footage of what happened in the woods. A found footage movie was new back then. We all believed it. When my buddy and I went to the theater, we thought we were watching a real recording released to the cinema. I remember when the movie was over, the theater was quiet. Everybody was all fucked up lol.
I saw it in an empty cinema when it came out. The atmosphere slowly built up and I was pretty freaked out by the last third of the film. I was so involved in fact, that I nearly didn't hear the mumbling from the back of the theatre..so naturally I turn around and and I can see the outline of a man sitting on the back-row. Needless to say, I developed a stiff-neck from looking behind every ten seconds.
So the way the movie was marketed was at the beginning when people were really getting home computers and this internet, the story had surfaced about this footage was found and they had marketed it as it's an unsolved case and that they were going to show it in movie theaters. I remember going to see this in the theater and at the very end of the movie, you could have heard a pin drop in that movie theater. Like we used to camp a lot back then. And it absolutely impacted my trusting, the woods, it frightened the hell out of me and it is laughable today, but it certainly was a pioneer of all of those reality television shows and movies that came after it is a very good film. Much better than the sequels that followed and I think heather donahue went on advertising marijuana, hemp, close or something
I live near Blair and when it came out I took my hi8 camera to the town and talked to the people. They were not amused. Then went to woods and made those stick things
9:21 that is dope! That is how you do it. These people are so lazy today. No one would have ever thought to do anything like that. Can you imagine them having this documentary all this time, done in a very creative and intuitive way, and just now being able to show it .....if thats the case.....amazing!
I remember when this first came out. There wasn't all this found footage stuff back then so yeah I can see how a lot of people may think its real. I questioned it myself at first saying is this real, but I am the type to get some info before I just believe things and I hopped on the net to do a little searching right away. I also wound up seeing The chick in this movie in another movie with Freddie Prince Jr, so I knew it was all fake, but it very good for its time, and I could see it fooling your average person back in the day.
I felt the HI 8 camcorder footage looked phenomenal... 16mm looks great. I got to see this when it came out I was 31 years old got stuck in the second row I had motion sickness and my neck hurt LOL
The postcards, lobby card replicas and CD soundtracks need to stop. Just take $10 off the list price instead of adding that shit. The already cash-strapped collectors will appreciate it.
Yep the website helped to sell the "veracity" of the story. It came out when I was in high school....tbh at that age we were savvy enough to figure out it was a hoax by the time we saw it in the theatres but it was still effective. Also amazing how they were able to make this film such a huge success profit wise, and have a decent product from literally making the actors hold the cameras. Amazing. Also being in Maryland, people always try to go visit the woods where the filmed. Great locations.
I went to high school with Heather so I never had the opportunity to buy into the marketing behind it, but it must’ve been something else for those who did watch this thinking it was real.
I was just gonna keep my dvd box set of pt1&2 and you sold me on getting this now... dang lol. But I'm still going with trick or treat for release of the year.
Not entirely accurate with the festival cut, it is slightly longer but some footage is actually cut or replaced with those extended pieces, interesting they didn't restore it in its original ratio too

I definitely admire what they were able to do on the viral marketing/publicity side of things for the movie. They absolutely knocked that bit out of the park and sold it. I just wish the actual film could have lived up to it all for me. Oh well...
I find it funny that you pretty much have to go outside the U.S. to get this extensive set and not the country of origin. Makes me wonder why. I’ll have to take your word on it as I’m not shelling out money for a region free player for just one movie. I’m fine with Imprint.
I seen this opening night, i was in highschool, and i hated rhis movie, 50 percent off it was just black screen, then so much shaking of the camera. My friend ended up with motion sickness so bad he vomited and had to lay on the nasty floor. Yes rhe marketing was cool, but there has to be something off if you thought they would release a real found footage show with missing people in the theater.
I saw it with my mom ans and my sister. I was in my 20s in 1999. I've never seen a movie like this before. But it's b.s. that you have to get a region free player just to watch a movie like The Blair Witch Project. You can tell people to get a region free player all you want, but the majority of people will not get one. It really sucks and blows that it's only a foreign release. I don't know how much a region free player costs, but I'm pretty sure that is expensive a. f. What's the purpose of buying one anyway? I think those cards look really cool. You don't like movie cards in the set. That's your opinion, but some may think those are cool. Will Lions Gate release a set of the movie like Second Sight? Who knows? The funny thing about this when the movie was released. Once the movie was over a guy in the back said out loud that they could have gone to see Inspector Gadget. They thought the ending was terrible. But not me. It was, Awwww, we could have gone to see Inspector Gadget. Womp wooomp!!😂
Even it was region free I don't see a point in buying it. It was edited down the way it was to make it more coherent. And they did perfect. This is just milking it and adding extra things that don't need to be in just for the sake of milking it more. It was ended down that way for a reason or they wouldn't have taken it out . This is a cash grab. Now if they said you see what heather sees when screams "what the hell is that!?!?" When running out of the tent which unfortunately didn't get caught on camera. I would definitely buy. Or if it had extra footage of Josh going off by himself before being murdered I'd buy it. This is just adding everything that was cut out which sounds over saturated and derails the point of why it was a master piece after being edited down.
I hope to see a 4k of this exact release however pointless. I just want to have it play on my PS5. Call me cheap but I refuse to buy all region players.
I won’t buy a region free cause I just don’t want more stuff under my tv lol plus it would literally just be for some second sight releases. Not worth it to me, I already have multiple devices that play 4K movies
Only needed to see that movie one time. Saw it at the Neptune when it was the only theater showing it in WA. 6 months prior a bunch of friends from HS got together for break at Jen Warren’s house. It was at a lake here and her house was straight out of a horror movie. Her BF said he got this leaked footage from a police investigation about some kids that went missing while filming a documentary. I noped the phawk out of there. (Turned out he got an early bootleg from when it was doing the fest circuit) FF to when I saw it at the Neptune… the last scene. Welp… hella traumatized. When I was 13 my friend Morgan and I went in the woods by his house and discovered an abandoned Boy Scout cabin. We went inside and found shit all over the walls like in the movie. As an adult I know now it was probably teens smoking pot and doing dumb shit, but 13 year old Dave seeing Wiccan shit, pentagrams and candles had me running. So… Never watching that movie ever again.
watched this in the cinema when it came out i was 18 and thought it was laughable i honestly did laugh more than once it was that bad really dont like blair witch think its terrible but i will give it credit for genius marketing with the fake documentary and things some people thought it was real but as a film absolute garbage imo : )
Buy more stuff, you don't have enough stuff. Especially versions of movies you've seen multiple times before, that's a worthwhile life endeavour. You're making the world better.
The info I was looking for! Thanks!
I did the same thing for an import of return the living dead with original tar man voice. The special features didn’t all work though for some reason.
This player is awesome plays all my out of country movies.......all region B movies
Tried this with my French version of Beau Is Afraid, didn’t work, tried it for like 20 min.
@ sucks its doesn’t always work. It didn’t work with a t2 studio canal 3d bluray.
Not only is the hi8 footage cleaned up but it’s a pure source, all prior home video releases were sourced from the 35 blow up converted back to video which added unnecessary film grain and murkiness. Enjoy, went through this and the documentary earlier in the week!
This is the way. I've only had a couple discs not work with the Panasonic trick, and it's the best player from a technical standpoint anyway.
The Blair Witch is one of the prime examples I use for movies that are better on a specific format with that being vhs. The vibe of the movie fits so well with analog. Granted I wouldn't be opposed to getting higher quality versions but I will never get rid my vhs copy

Why does Australia need support? Is it crippled?
@@suttercane6 Without support it will be. So you'd better import your Imprint and Umbrella titles regularly.
@@SpaceCattttt I'm doing my part. I have The Warriors limited edition and Capricorn One. Cost me a fortune importing to the UK but worth it!

I was only 9 when when Blair came out. I still remember the night my parents and my aunt/uncle went to the theater to see it.

I was just gonna keep my dvd box set of pt1&2 and you sold me on getting this now... dang lol. But I'm still going with trick or treat for release of the year.
It's a region b release and they work on my xbox here in Australia so hopefully it will be the same for this release.
Which region free player do have or would recommend? Because i am working on getting one i just don't know which one i should get
Not entirely accurate with the festival cut, it is slightly longer but some footage is actually cut or replaced with those extended pieces, interesting they didn't restore it in its original ratio too
My twin sister also calls me Bubba, then and now. :)
I was 14 at the time and remember really looking forward to this film due to all the hype, and was extra pumped when the Curse of the Blair Witch "documentary" aired on TV.

Other than that, I ended up absolutely hating the movie and regretted making it my choice of movie. I felt like I wasted a figurative golden ticket.

Do you think there would be enough stuff to release The next two on second sight as they would look so good on a shelf
By the way, there´s a an incredible horror found footage movie that´s VERY scary and most people don´t know about: THE BLACK DOOR. Please, watch it.
Unfortunately my copy came damaged, probably will return and buy from someone else.
I find it funny that you pretty much have to go outside the U.S. to get this extensive set and not the country of origin. Makes me wonder why. I’ll have to take your word on it as I’m not shelling out money for a region free player for just one movie. I’m fine with Imprint.

question, where do we get a region free player
Its like watching it for the first time.
Shame the crybaby bridge and poetry scenes weren't included. They're In my fanedit. The sensical cut
I saw it with my mom ans and my sister. I was in my 20s in 1999. I've never seen a movie like this before. PS3 is still the best and cheapest region free player
Is sticks and stones on this release?
Is The VVitch a prequel to this? Got this thinking it was 4K. Bit disappointed but glad i got it.
No it is not.
I saw this when it released in the theater. I think I was 18 at the time. I didn’t think it was real but it was very scary and unique at the time.
Wasn't gonna buy it....bought it.
I’m not regional free. And American releases suck balls. They never give us great sets like this.
(Turned out he got an early bootleg from when it was doing the fest circuit)
FF to when I saw it at the Neptune… the last scene.
So…
Never watching that movie ever again.
I bought a region free player just for this release.
I want movie but not buying region free player just to watch that, it's b.s. the u.s. is. Not getting any new release
Keep crying
It actually was good in the theater.
watched this in the cinema when it came out i was 18 and thought it was laughable i honestly did laugh more than once it was that bad really dont like blair witch think its terrible but i will give it credit for genius marketing with the fake documentary and things some people thought it was real but as a film absolute garbage imo : )
Must be a generational thing.Because I find those movies unwatchable 🤟💿🤟
thanks for the spoilers. meh
Buy more stuff, you don't have enough stuff. Especially versions of movies you've seen multiple times before, that's a worthwhile life endeavour. You're making the world better.
