The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Even though I adored Diana and her Supremes, this songs ranks as one of my all-time favorites, post Diana. Sweet memories of dancing to this one at our Junior High School Saturday night dances.

@@queenwade482 💯Berry Gordy was always vindictive. He ruled his entertainers like a slavemaster. If one didn't always agree with him, he ultimately punished them by not advancing their careers. Moreover, he wanted complete control over their earnings. Regardless of what else may have happened, demanding control of his earnings was the main reason Berry treated David Ruffin the way he did, as well as many others. Mary talks about this same issue in her second autobiography. We all know that the industry was, and is still, inundated with drugs, so don't believe all of Motown's PR nonsense about anybody. Mary, David, and Eddie may your beautiful souls rest with Jesus and add your mellifluous voices to the angelic chorus.❤🙏🙏🙏

I'm from Detroit and this was such an exciting time. We had no problem with Diana Ross going solo (it was inevitable) and we were waiting with eager anticipation to discover who the new lead singer would be. We knew Mary and Cindy were the perfect background blend and were going to stay in the background. When it was announced that Jean Terrell was coming on board, the roof blew off the city. She was better than we ever imagined and the "New Supremes" (that's what we called them) hit the ground running. We just wished Motown had done a better job of backing them. Ladder, Stoned Love, Nathan Jones, Lovebeats...we ate it up!
What fun it must have been to have witnessed all of that in real time! I love Jean, Mary and Cindy ❤️

I was right there as well. These are some of the most beautiful women of the time. The came on board and gave it their very all. You should listen to Terrell's story of her experience. Gordy refused to promote them. It was such a disappointment.

I think this was one of maybe only five (?) sets of brand new gowns that the new Supremes got in the early 1970s. The latter day groupings got a few, but they were schlocky. Looking like they came from Kmart. What a travesty. SMH. The 70s Supremes never got the respect they deserved.
People really like to down play Mary cause she didn’t immediately take lead when Diana left but let’s be real the supremes are one of the few groups where the entire fan base knows the backup vocals just as well as the lead vocals which shows just how important she was in the groups success. RIP Mary.
Nah! Following Diana's departure, Mary, as the senior member, had the chance to restructure the group so that each member (especially her) could have a moment to shine. While not everyone desires to be as prominent or dominant on stage as Diana, it seems illogical for Mary to recruit another full-time lead after enduring Diana's spotlight-stealing behavior.
Ideally, the post-Diana Supremes would have operated like En Vogue, with a democratic vocal setup where each member had a chance at the lead. The subsequent arrangement, with Jean Terrell positioned as the new Diana, while Mary and Cindy remained in the background, seemed repetitive and lackluster. This makes me think that perhaps Diana wasn't quite the limelight-seizing diva she was made out to be but rather the only one who actually wanted the front position.
If Mary had comparable talent as Diana did, she could have embarked on a solo career the way Diana did. She didn't, so she didn't.
At best, she didn't have the courage and determination to overcome what she perceived as music-industry obstacles -- and so chose to continue in the role she was comfortsble in: thsa of back-up singer.
At worst, Mary didn't have a unique enough voice, front-stage personality that is required of ALL star singerswho succeed at center stage -- and instead of admitting she was indeed a backup singer (an all backup singers risk losing their career if the lead singer -- as most do -- has the desire and skill to strike out on their own.
Unfortunately, she chose to embrace the identity of victim. A victim needs a victimizer, lest they become self-reliant (oohh , scary ... because that requires beinv brutally honest with one's own limitations and learn to love and accept and love and value oneself for who they really are -- instead of nurturing the bitter root of envy that focuses on what others are and do).
Mary mbraced the role of victim, because it allowed her to abdicate her own responsibility in having a sucessful career. A victim was allowed to see Diana and Barry as evil oppressors, and themselves as powerless.
Envy [believing but denying Diana's star qualities] is what drove her to speak and write all those bitter biographies.
Those fans who likewise were angry that Diana had the audacity to take her gifts and talents as far as they would take her, unquestionably accepted Mary's viewpoint as ansolute truth. They too wanted to blame someone for dashing their fantasy for a never-ending Supremes story. The ride both enjoyed on Diana's coat-tails was ovet and that pissed them off.
Those who are, like Mary, obsessed with bashing Diana and saying ridiculous things -- they are hypocrites unless they do the same for countless other stars that left groups and bands.
Another thing about these ridiculous comments like Diana doesn't have amazing voice and stage presence, and didn't deserve and earn the accolades. Saying she only got ahead by sleeping with the boss is just typical double-standard sexism when men say it, and systemic women-bashing-successful-women we see far too much of.
You're playing into the culture of punishing successful women by thinking their success is only possible is they please men, and their failure is never their own resonsibilitu but because their men are displeased.
Remember the role Dolly Parton played in 9-to-5? The fellow workers assumed she must have her job, not due to her own talents, but becayse she must be sleeping with ths boss. Many comments on this video are just like those employees.
Using Barry as the reason means you must think women are inherently "the weaker sex" and they are inevitably fully dependent on a ma's good graces for ehete their lives end up.
Okay, so you hate Diana because you wanted the Supremes to remain a successful group forever (hmmm ... there's a disconnect in your bashing: how can she be as untalented as you claim, and yet caused the new-Supremes to fade?).
The departure of the least skilled of the trio, as those angry deniers have labeled her, would not have caused the fade-out of the post-Diana "Supremes".
The bashers ard also hypocrites unless they demonize the countless other talented performers who went on to success as solo acts while their less-talented former group/band mates faded.
So, before you say another negative remark about Diana, first slam Cass Elliot (her departure resulted in the eventual fade of the less-talented ensemble of the Mammas and Pappas. Go ahead, say Cass had a voice less beautiful thsn the remaining three.
Then bash Michael Jackson as a talentless singer and dancer and claim he must have sabotaged the remaining, more talented memvers of the faded Jackson Five according to your convoluted eyes -- because someone, somewhere must be angry about the trajectory of the J5 post-Michael. I know, blame Barry for that too; I meam the group originated with Motown. Do that's aneasy target. Oh, but rember to conveniently ignore that it was Diana eho championed their early career (so unlike the Bit$& you claim she it)!
Then do the same with a half dozen of the countless other skilled performers who left former groups/bands. Do that, and at least proove youreself sincere in your delusion instead of just sour-grapes!

'Up The Ladder To The Roof'. It's 50 years old this year and is timeless. Jean brought a new sound to the Supremes with her distinctive soulful voice. When she left so did I as they slowly drifted into oblivion!

Without Mary Wilson The Supremes would have ended with the departure of Ross in 1969. She fought to save the group she loved so much. Got no support from Motown (Mr Gordy). Long live the Supremes!

They probably would’ve kept it with Cindy, Berry treated her equally to Mary. Berry never signed off on those other Supremes they were hired under Mary as Supremes as she had partial ownership of the name. That’s why when she left Berry said no cause there was no original signed members

Yup! IF you could afford a color TV set!!! In my household, a color tv was a LUXURY item!! In 1970, we were still many decades away from having flat screen tv...only the Jetsons had that convenience!
My dad was still watching a black & white television in 1984 the year he passed away, he said he wasn't interested in a color TV at the time.
Ms. Wilson can now climb the ladder to the roof and see heaven much better. May she enjoy eternal peace.

Terrific! The 70s Supremes were far more soulful and it was great to hear Mary & Cindy's vocals higher in the mix. The harmonies were great. Between 1970-72the group was far more successful on the UK charts than back home in America.
This was the first single release after Diana Ross's departure, and probably their best song ever!!! Jean Terrell really hit the spot. Her brother was Ernie Terrell the WBA heavyweight boxing champion from 1965-67.
I watched this episode on TV 50 years ago. I was 12. I thought the Ladies were gorgeous. I was a white kid who loved Motown. I watched Soul Train on Saturday while my sister and I cleaned the house while mom was at work. Mom was working six days a week. So us kids "played" while cleaning. I was my job to vacuum....so I would dance while watching Soul Train. Never as good as the people there in the studio. But it made the chores better. Thank You Supremes miss you

I agree that it was probably lip-synced, since I'm so familiar with the record and this sounds just like it. I would've preferred a live performance, and Sullivan preferred his performances live, as well, but on some occasions, he would allow lip-syncing if it was difficult to recreate the sound of the original record live. That said, the choreography also stands out and is almost as much a part of the performance as the song itself.

Yes, so sad how Diana’s career faltered and flopped. Whatever happened to her anyway? She’s been in showbiz for over 50 years selling records, making movies, and giving concerts and is worth $350 million dollars. What a failure. Maybe if she had stayed with the supremes she would have done well.

I have always been very fond of this song all of my life, and I heard this song again the other day on my smalltown hometown oldies radio station, as I was going along in my truck to mow a customer's yard. I turned it all the way up, and toward the end the song is so thrilling at full volume that I could hardly contain myself. Jean Terrell's voice, along with everything in the background, was soaring! Now that is some kind'a song right there. AWESOMENESS!

You can tell both Mary and Cindy look at lot happier in this performance, compared to some from 68 & 69. It’s kind of funny how the supremes without Diana Ross actually out preformed her for the most part from 1970-1972 even though Motown was putting zero effort into the group, but was putting all their effort into Diana Ross. It’s just proves how special the Supremes truly were, with or without Diana, they were something truly spectacular!! Although, the supremes will always be Diana, Mary, and Flo, and nothing can ever change that!
