As a yiddish speaker, this is quite fun! Of course Duolingo does not use standard yiddish from YIVO, it uses the American Hasidic pronounciation, although the writing is the same. For an example, "gut" is always "gut" (but hasidic says "git", as well as polish yiddish speakers or southern dialect speakers), this is quite a mess, but I love it! Thank you for reminding me my childhood haha
Hey, my favorite language is coming next! Boy, do I remember that livestream. I couldn't participate much, thanks to visits at my home. Hyped for next video!
Thanks! Yes, this beginner level is very easy to understand coming from English and especially German. The writing is a completely different beast, but you get the hang of it for the most part.
Fun fact, the way words are spelled in Yiddish works slightly differently from Hebrew. However, words derived from Hebrew maintain their original spelling so that's where some of the confusion around the spelling of words such as חבר comes from.
Love your videos! Do you speak languages other than English? Or currently focused on a target language? Or is this a fun way to “window shop” for a language you’d like to commit to in the future?
Glad you liked them! Yes, I speak Spanish natively and I'm learning Catalan and Dutch. It is indeed a very fun way of "window-shopping" or just learning very basics of different languages.
@@jccbm nice! I’m learning Spanish and Arabic. Primarily focused on Spanish(I’m not perfect by a long shot, but I’m at a decent conversational level depending on the topic). And dabbling in Arabic. If I can get those two down, I’ll be happy lol suerte hermano mío!
I came over to you YT channel to see if the new episode already out and started watching this one again. Love your editing. "Look at your tail" is amazing :) 1:47 How did you learn all that editing? Do you need a lot of software to do it?
Glad you are enjoying! Everything I've learned has been by doing, after 34 videos you start getting the hang of it. I've been using DaVinci Resolve, it's a very good and well respected software, even in it's free version.
Semetic languages work off of a so called root system, basicly, you have three base letters, and that have a meaning, and then you build around them, for exemple k-t-b in arabic and hebrew is the root with the meaning of ,,writing",so ,,I wrote" in arabic is ,,katabtu" and ,,kātabti" in hebrew, and because the root system makes predictable patterns, the short vowels aren't written, just the long vowels, this creates the ,,ghost vowels" you were talking about
Thanks for the explanation! Yes, I can imagine how, with some experience, it becomes quite managable and easy to recognize the patterns. It is kinda wild the first time you stumble into the idea of "vowels are not there, you just know" though 🤣
@@jccbm the thing is,both the arabic and hebrew scripts are made for semetic languages,Yiddish is a germanic language, with completly different grammar, interestingly,it seems the vowels actually changed in such a way that they work better with the script
Catalan is only offered through Spanish, so it's supposed to be a speedrun in English where I translate the Spanish base of the Catalan course. Because why not 😅
@@starleaf-luna no idea tbh... My guess is that it's such a localized language in Spain that there's a bigger Spanish speaking market seeking to learn it. They might do English version at some point, but Spanish was a better starting point.
Prankreich! Now I will call that country as prank land :) Thanks for your content. I just saw great mem and send it to you on twitter. Let me know what is the way to communicate pictures with you, YT doesn't support that staff
The words with no vowels are Hebrew. "Friend" or "חבר" has no vowels, because it's Hebrew. Were it to be written with vowels it'd look like this "כאווער" (Hebrew also tends to use different letters that make the same sounds, but are basically unused in Yiddish. It's a mess bro.)
I'm also curious. I do know Afrikaans has some level of double negation too, even though Dutch doesn't (double "nie" as in "Ek eet nie kaas nie") so there's probably some reasoning behind it, even though that one reminds me a bit more of french with the "ne + pa" combo
2:42 it is "Das bin ich." in german. The sentence "This is me." uses "me" which actually means "mich", but in german one wouldn't say "Das bin mich". That would be wrong.
I was originally rooting for Hebrew too so both Jewish ppl who speak it throughout the world and Palestinians forced to learn it as a colonial language can enjoy the content but now seeing that self-proclaimed “Israelis” are watching, I withdraw my support for Hebrew to show up next. I'm doing the alphabet lessons for Yiddish and they're missing quite a bit of the audio. It asks "what sound does this make" and there is no sound, on like 1/10 of the questions
this wierd dialect has a huge amount of unmotivated homophony, that's why different letters give the same pronunciation and the same letters give different pronunciation, that's a thing in Hebrew, but there it comes from historical pronunciation, rather than twisting German dialect. . Besides there are loaned Hebrew words, that retain their spelling, no matter the pronunciation( like Yerushalaeem and Sholom Aleykhem ). that depends on the dialect of Yiddish
I think the reason that you're taking a long time is because you take too much time talking. A speedrun can be easily butchered by common distractions like the live stream chat. Once you get the next language, just focus on the Duolingo. Even if it starts to get boring. You can still say thoughts out loud to help you remember; I don't think that was one of the reasons you took so long. Good luck on the next speedrun!
There's plenty of reasons, that's definitely one of them. I can tell you that all of the last 10~ languages were done in a very short span of time, so you can expect extremely high levels of exhaustion an distraction. "Speedrun" has stopped being a very accurate identifier since some time ago ☠️
