What a perfect representation of my face when learning this language ( ייִ ). Going through a brand new alphabet is always a challenge, but this language had a special surprise. Other than the difficulties of learning how to read again (for the 9th and almost final time in this series), Yiddish is quite an easy ride, especially if you have some experience with German and even English. The Hebrew alphabet (or abjad?) is not too complex, but you do have to rewire your brain to read right-to-left.
As usual, the Duolingo course branched into the weirdest and most absurd words and sentences one can imagine, but that's the beauty of it. I might not be able to say "Hello, how are you" in Yiddish, but now I know how to say "A pizza in a pyramid".
This video is split into 2 parts, this one is only for the alphabet lessons in Duolingo, and the next part will cover the remaining (and more complex) part of the course.

I just wish duolingo would add an Old English course already. Trying to find sources to learn it is almost harder than doing the actual studying, but I could only imagine it'd be fun to speedrun too
I wish they had old english
ASAP!!! Also dothraki! They have high valyrian why not dothraki too? Its very well developed to be there
they def need a parseltongue course 😂
All we need is their sources really hell 😂
Mango has Shakespeare talk (I think) and pirate speak
I'm guessing that they started with those absurd sentences because those are such close cognates with English, and they want to help you get used to the script.
It's the only logical explanation for such absurdity 😅. It did work though, so props to Duolingo.
It also should be noted that Modern Hebrew is actually heavily constructed, taking a lot of words from English.
They do it to help with memory
We need Assyrian on duolingo
We do
And Armenian! And Georgian! And one of the Serbo-Croatian languages, wish they’d make a formal name for them all as one
Hungarian for sure, you'll have a blast with the declensions for both nouns and verbs
People are exaggerating when they say Hungarian is hard.
@@MM-pv5tpI don’t think they are, just based on how different it is from nearly every commonly-spoken/learned language in the world. Especially when you consider the ridiculous amounts of prefixes and suffixes used in place of standard-English conjugation. I definitely would have struggled to learn it if I wasn’t Hungarian in the first place.
@@fiatal_tudos Sure Hungarian has a lot of grammatical rules, but it shouldn’t take forever to learn it.
NiceNotNice
Most European languages (especially west) are somewhat simple, so It makes sense that contextually speaking it's significantly harder.
It's always funny to me seeing how people think of hebrew letters, as a native speaker. Good job learning yiddish, du redst gut!
Thanks! It's quite a nice writing system, and fortunately I didn't find it too complex. But it's nice to challenge your brain with a brand new writing system and flipping the direction of reading.
I'm learning hebrew, I can memorize a lot of words (but just the way to say it, to memorize all the letters it's a bit complicated yet)
בתור דובר עברית שוטפת, אידיש זו שפה שונה מעברית. ואפילו אני לא יודע אידיש אז כל הכבוד!
as a native hebrew speaker , german learner and my grandma speak yiddish it was fun to see
Hey, I am jimneutron123456 from the live comment section!
wow man. you even edited the OG jimmy from the cartoon, haha, I'm flattered beyond words. Thank you. Nice editing skills. I can't answer the question of the video though, because from this speedrun onwards , I started watching most, if not all the speedruns live, so I know the answer.
but I'm hyped for the next video and the hungarian speedrun!
Also, the arabic letter forms aren't that bad. They are basically chops of the base form to connect the others in their sides. Hebrew, well, it looks like a completely different thing.
Nice! Yeah, no spoilerinos. Even though I always spoil everything on stream 🤣
Yeah I took a close look at it, there's only a couple that look weird in arabic.
Idk my purpose.
study ithkuil until you can say "I am food"

TES-TEST was my favourite.
That's when you know it's not a popular language in Duolingo 😅
I bet Hungarian will be longer than Czech, with all the cases.
People are exaggerating when they say Hungarian is hard.
@@MM-pv5tp isnt it a super hard language
To be fair Duolingo doesn't sit you down and explain to you every grammar bit during the lessons, it moreso kinda appears "naturally" for you to get the hang of it. Not sure if that would make it faster or slower though 😅
Probably, but it does check the boxes of a "hard language". Complex grammar, no connections to most languages around it, a wide variety of sounds. It does seem pretty consistent overall, which in my opinion makes languages simpler to get used to.
LMAOO subscribing to you from this video cause this was HILARIOUS 💀💀
Nice! Thanks and welcome, glad you enjoyed it
1:00 I love how you mentioned Punjabi I am Punjabi myself, but I do agree Bengali should be on Duolingo its one of the most spoken languages so it would make sense
🇷🇺
I've had the pleasure of listening to a bit of Punjabi music, it's awesome! And yes, it's surprising how Bengali isn't in Duolingo.
Languages that vowels aren't included are called abjads and, P.S. I think the 5 languages ARE LONG than Czech.
I've heard that term when speaking about arabic, so it makes sense it would apply to hebrew as well! Thanks. Also, that's a hot take but these speedruns are wild, so anything can happen!
Lol I love the himym references and also I'm glad someone trying to learn Yiddish unfortunately it's a dying language
It's fun though!
Hungarian for sure, this language is sooo hard
So I've heard!
@@jccbm oh, hi! can I ask u please
მეთშეტ would be metshet (מעטשעט) in georgian writing lol
I mean, it really doesn't look too similar, but it shares a bit of the "roundiness" 😅
remember that have catalao and guarani, two languages that only have at espanish
Don't worry, I know!
amazing intro man
Can't believe there's no Khmer/Cambodian yet ☹
Oh that would also be quite awesome
Watching this after Hungarian video. Oh boy you shouldn't have asked.

Esperanto
How much time do you estimate it will take?
@@jccbm knowing that you have lots of knowledge with european languages, and that esperanto has no inconsistencies, and is just a sandwich of affixes all over the place, it shouldn't take you that long

Why isn’t you duolingo different
These videos come from livestreams done some months ago! So the big change hadn't happened globally.
Will we see you using the new duolingo update soon?

For hebrew speakers, yidish is so goofy its funny
I liked it, but it might as well be called "preudo-German with Hebrew script"
As German, I was in Israel a few years ago. Once you managed the alphabet, it was a self-goer for me. Its medieval german with some polish and russian words in it (and hebrew for religious terms)
Yeah, I can imagine that! These beginner level lessons do quite a good job showing how similar it is to German (and even English sometimes!)
as somebody whos mother language is hebrew this was so relatable
it was like 1st grade school all over again
Hehehe. Hebrew is coming up at some point too, though!
all those animals in Madrid made me laugh so much. i think we've all learned some very useful phrases for the future
"A pizza in a pyramid" will always stick close to my heart.
Bro i cant even speak french and this guy learns yiddish in no time
What a legend
its germanic like english, so should be fairly easy to a commited person. The biggest obstacle should be the different characters

God, yiddish looks weird with hebrew letters
Actually, no. I did the speed run Hungarian it took like an hour 30 very fast
11:12 it can be both uu and vv it depends on context
I found out many letters kinda change with context, just gotta get used to it
@@jccbm yup especially with the hebrew alphabet
The more you speak the more you start getting used to context but for begginers its impossible to understand without the dots in places
Like, vv has two dots under, vi has one, uu has one in the middle and oo has one on top. Its a confusing one unless you were born into it and on the surface it all just looks like a line.
you plan on adding zulu
Don't want to spoil much, but be ready for every language!
Yeah it's longer then CzEcH

I'm doing the alphabet lessons for Yiddish and they're missing quite a bit of the audio. It asks "what sound does this make" and there is no sound, on like 1/10 of the questions
fun fact Esperanto was created by polish guy named Ludwik Zamenhof
