    I'm interested in that entirely new Klingon Bird of Prey.
    I hope someone makes a toy of this as it's a nice design sort of like the mid point between some of the other arrow head ship designs from licensed materials and canon.
    I bet having that ship anywhere near other ships would make people nervous since it's a GIANT BOMB, even destorying the thing is likely to kill the thing that kills it unless they chuck torpedoes at it and run like hell right to warp. Killing it is kinda not good for the attacker either otherwise.

    I was surprised that the protostar drive would be implemented. In the final episode, they mentioned that the detonation of the drive would destroy a solar system and beyond. That's why they had to "Go Fast" before the self destruct. Even then, it created a worm hole.

    I think the 2nd Protostar is still an NX ship and prototype rather than fully commissioned ship, with the original being lost, Starfleet building a second prototype to try figuring out what went wrong and then finishing it when the original was found and destroyed to continue work on the design to work out any issues that the original might have also had, possibly with several upgrades from what was known and with regard to any other advancements.

      1. ST’s antimatter/matter system is an annihilation process that produces a complete conversion process to pure energy that is focused via the crystals for use by the system for use.
      2. ST fusion system fuses the matter to produce both energy and expels the fused particles for propulsion.
      3. The “protostar” system is in essence a super concentrated fusion reactor and a highly concentrated gravitational energy system. Similar to a real star. Therefore it can be inferred that they use all the energy , fused particles and gravity it gives off to create its form of “propulsion”.

But the "protostar engine" using an actual protostar is... well... dumb. I mean we come from the warpcore an matter/ antimatter Anihilation reactor, the single most efficient energy generator we currently know. To one up this by a mere fusion reaction (what a protostar is) seems like a downgrade. How should this ever be a better powersource? damed.

    My fan theory for the Crossfield class is that the class is an existing design dating back some decades compared to the Enterprise. Dialog suggests the Discovery at least was a new build but it could also be a refit. Both ships would have been radically refit or altered from the base Crossfield design for the spore drive mechanisms. The best reason to do this imo is that the standard systems would be well understood established technology, not a bunch of cutting edge stuff that might complicate working out issues with the spore drive. Imo, this was the big fault with the NX2000 Excelsior, an entirely new full sized star ship running both an experimental d4ive and presumably a lot of brand new sltech in other systems would have made shaking down the vessel a nightmare.

    Truth to tell, Discovery IS faster than the Protostar. Of course, at the time the Protostar class was in service, there was no Discovery to compete with.
    I wonder if now Starfleet will expand that much faster, once normal warp drives are hopelessly obsolete.

    • @90lancaster
      @90lancaster Год назад +1

      I guess one could argue Discovery isn't acting as a spacecraft when spore jumping. so it's maximun speed would be whatever a Coaxial warp drive can do (which is VERY VERY FAST) heck it's using tech several centuries better than the Enterprise J and she could reach the the codependent micro galaxies in a few years. (so that is at least warp 50 in TOS terms). I guess in theory Discovery could go to Andromeda so long as she took the resources to get there with her on conventional drive or spore drive just one would take many years and the other what a few days maybe depending on maintenance needed on the drive and how long each jump is.. Long jumps in inter-galactic space should be easier with fewer things in the way. The spore pathways might be a bit defuse though or may not even reach there at all.
      Discovery might be able to propagate them there though itself. but it might be like some other Sci Fi maybe someone has to go there slowly 1st.
      Perhaps that is one way to explain the discovery left alone in the short treks perhaps she was a duplicate sent to the past to go to a distant location first and seed it as the shop could easily get to Andromeda on its own in 1000 years even on the original 23rd century engines. It just needs the resources to do that safely.
      So having this old ship do that might be a plot point to use one day.... or failing that perhaps Section 31 can get their hands on the other ship some how too... not that many people know it exists or did exist.

    A protostar is a star that has started forming but has not started fusing hydrogen. A protostar is not very powerful at all. Clearly the writers need to take some astronomy classes before they start naming ships with the intent of making them sound powerful.
    Also, it takes a star many times more massive than the Earth's star to create a singularity. Even if living beings could create one artificially, the gravity would be far too strong to build a ship around. The gravity of a singularity is strong enough that even if you were able to transport the ship instantaneously around the singularity, it would pull all of the material of the ship into a space smaller than an atom.
