    In Star Trek TOS, I thought of the Enterprise as a characters. In many ways I saw the Ship as Kirk did, or maybe closer to the way the Doctor sees the Tardis. I know this because when the Enterprise was sacrificed in Star Trek III, I was shocked at losing a beloved character. The others seem to have just a really trusted vessel, but not quite a character. Then came Prodigy, and the Protostar was a character in the show. When it was destroyed, I mourned two losses.

    The problem with open stairways on a ship (or building, for that matter), is that they can't be easily sealed off. A hull puncture would allow all the air on the ship to escape, if the decks were connected by open stairways. Lift shafts can be sealed off easier. I know they have force fields that can seal off the hull, but a physical barrier really needs be available as a backup. There is also the fire safety issue - again, why tall buildings have stairways that are enclosed, to protect people during fires and allow for escape. Not to mention, an open top to bottom stairwell would act like a chimney for the smoke and fire - which is why you don't use elevators during a fire, the elevator shafts can do the same thing.

    • @QBCPerdition
      @QBCPerdition Год назад +1

      I got the feeling the Protostar was only 3 decks tall or maybe 5 at the most. It's essentially a bigish house, and houses have open stairwells because no matter where you are, you're never too far from where you need to get to. Same idea here.

Definite options there.

    To be clear, not all of Voyager's shuttles would have been left behind or unsalvageable. In a number of occasions, Voyager's crew would have absolutely been required to salvage the shuttles as best as they could to prevent violations of the Prime Directive(See Enterprise-D saucer for precedent). Not to mention that it's a fact that they built support craft when the need arose. Don't act like they couldn't build shuttles if they can build Delta Fliers.
    And let's also not forget that they have cargo transporters, meaning they can always beam scrap and stuff up to the ship. You probably wouldn't want to beam an active warp core onto your ship, though. That's likely why we never see shuttles beamed in their entirety or something like that, even though we do see lots of cargo get beamed all at once. You know, unless it's too volatile for the transporter.

    I don't mean to piddle on anybody's parade here but seeing a design that "finally" includes stairs lauded, is (to me) an example of the inate ableism people seem to have. Stairs are a useful invention if one has two working legs. Those of us with disablities don't see those stairs as handy, we see them as an obsticle. No doubt my comment will be met with rolled eyes because the abled don't understand what it's like to live in a world that is built to accomidate everyone but you. Yes, there are turbo lifts in ships, we get it, but those "handy" stairs right there up front could just as easily have been a ramp that could've been used by people of all abilities and here's a thing - aliens who don't have two legs. Those stairs certainly wouldn't have been handy for Captain Christopher Pike once he was in his chair. Those stairs might've been a challenge for Lt. Arex or any Edosian. I realize no harm was meant by the comment but you need to understand that stairs are not a handy thing for all of us. It's estimated that %15 of the world's population is disabled. That's 1.1 billion people. So please realize that there are a lot of us who don't find stairs useful. Thanks.

    • @barneyrubble4293
      @barneyrubble4293 Год назад

      There are still turbolifts on the ship, so I'm not sure what you're problem is. I guess you just want to complain about ableism because they made a comment about stairs.
      There are places where this kind of attitude is useful and it's not the youtube comments section, try browbeating the people who have the power to change things in your life.

    • @warmfuzzy1
      @warmfuzzy1 11 месяцев назад

      @@barneyrubble4293 I'm trying to explain that able-bodied people seeing stairs as "an accomplishment" is tone deaf to people who aren't able to use stairs. In a place where turbo lifts exist, stairs are NOT necessary and ONLY serve abled people. Your clap back PROVES my point that abled people don't see their own privilege. Thanks.

    I never understood the type of landing gear the Protostar had. A massive single ski essentially. There is in no way that ship would be stable when landed, let alone the sort of crash landing scene you showed from one of the episodes. Also, the size of the landing ski plus the whole mechanism for it doesn't seem like it would fit in the bottom of the secondary hull since you already have the shuttle bay, engineering, the protostar nacelle, and whatever else there might be there.

      I know, right? I don't want my animated sci-fi series preventing me from suspending my own disbelief in it. To solve that for myself, I've made what I believe to be a reasonable assumption:
      The Protostar likely employs anti-grav technology to maintain its lateral balance on that single ski--in the end saving space and weight over a three legged landing gear design.
      Of course as always, I reserve the right to be totally wrong.
