It’s only a 25 minute episode, so I think the record of 81 ups from Those old Scientists is safe. Otherwise this could have given the record a serious challenge.
This is easily one of the best episodes of Lower Decks. Edit: I better not be the only person who believes the episode's title is a reference to Galaxy Quest, especially after watching the episode.
Beagle is also a reference to the ship Charles Darwin was on, where (when exploring the Galapagos), he made notes on all the different variations of finches that evolved there to fill the different niches (almost like our variations of crew members)
That was what I was thinking as well, considering the Enterprise name is suggested to be based on the HMS Enterprise (at least that was made canon in TNG and Enterprise). I was rather put out here didn’t put those together.
jeri ryan had such better writing than blalock had, and it always felt like they missed in enterprise what fans actually liked about 7 or any other less outwardly emotional character finding some understanding of humanity while retaining spme cold calculating badassness. it seems strange to me because the writers of data definitely learned from what vould have been with better writing for spock, but enterprise reverted vs voyager.
Oh Man, I so wanted to watch the ups and downs now, but considering how much awesome Sean has to cover, this is going to be longer then the episode itself, can't wait
The reveal of T'Pol and the return of Jolene Blalock to Star Trek made my heart so warm and happy! It felt alot like Christopher Eccleston returning to Doctor Who with audio stories and visting conventions. Thankfully, time can heal most wounds.
I love that when the Harry Kim’s see that he has 2 pips one of them checks it I think that’s a reference to a previous episode when they said that if u see someone with a extra pip when they should have it’s a piece of corn lol
Yeah, I think that one might've gone over Sean's head. It made me fall out of my chair laughing. The slight pause after that line, they definitely knew what they were doing lol
“This Kim has TWO pips!” Thant line deserved an up on its own. I know the joke was dropped in the trailer, but it’s still hilarious to have Garrett himself making the joke about Eternal Ensign Harry Kim.
This episode was so much fun. They flooded this episode with star-power and story, and all the tropes and call-backs just worked. I loved it. Thank you so much for this episode. Citation Observation was wild. Consequently, I'm a perfectly strait SIS male, but I have ALWAYS felt there should have been an intimate relationship between Garrick and Basheer.
I agree with some of the folks in chat. I really think the Beagle was named after the HMS Beagle; a ship known for exploring diversity in its own way. It's really interesting that.. on a very surface level... this episode has a lot of parallels to "These are the Voyages..." , sidelining our main characters to highlight characters from the show's past. But its clear what a huge difference it makes when something like that is down out of love and reverence rather than slapping together studio notes.
It also helps that this is just the penultimate episode, not the finale. If the series ended here I'm sure there would be the same sort of outcry as there was with the Enterprise ending.
I will unfortunately miss this because of work, but I will most definitely watch it once I'm home because I'm certain it will probably be Sean being giddy for 30 minutes to an hour.
i love the use of animation to bring characters back with their og actor's voices and get around weird creepy de-aging stuff. love that garak and bashir bpth agreed to do it. this is tacit acceptance of the canon we all knew was canon anyway
I was NOT prepared for this episode! I've watched a couple of times already today! If this is part 1 of the series finale, I can only imagine how the second part will turn out next week! I CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT!!
One for the observations, the warp sound effect they used, that was the single-used sound effect from TNG's Encounter at Farpoint, the one that sounded like a cat with a synthesizer for a voice, and HMS Beagle is also the sailing ship that took Charles Darwin on his voyages to, well, to seek out new life and new civilisations, boldly going where no-one had gone before (even if they ate a bunch of giant turtles because they were too delicious not to!), and is also the probe that we brits sent to Mars that sadly failed to land... :)
@@khoichau8316 The only way that would have been true is if his father was either dead or absent when he was growing up, since his father locking him in a closet was the source of that fear.
When I first watched lower decks, I didn’t really like it but over the seasons I really come to appreciate it and I’m gonna be really sad that there’s not gonna be any more episodes
I was watching the D Con podcast with Scott Bakula yesterday and started thinking: what has Jolene Blalock been up to. So I open up IMDB, and see "Star Trek: Lower Decks 5.09". So damn, I spoiled myself
Kim screaming about there being more than two dimensions was great because they're all 2D animation and it's a call back to SNW Those Old Scientists. (chef's kiss!)
I'll be honest w/ them getting Jolene Blalock back I legitimately thought maybe we could've had just a brief scene w/ Jadzia getting the Dax symbiont and just like a quick line or two from Terry Farrell cuz at this point I'm convinced Lower Decks can convince anyone to show up. If they got more seasons or a movie and wanted to have Sisko there I wouldn't even be shocked if they could do that.
Ds9 is my favourite trek series, and on all the rewatches Its always great to see how much Andrew Robinson, and later on Alexander Siddig (who absolutely leant into it as the show went on) got past the censors who at the time were so anti-love
What an absolute abuse of legacy Star Trek fan loyalty! And... I LIVE! Screams came from the bedroom! GARRACK! BASH-HERE! T'POL! HARRY! And the old slug! LILLY! I felt so... violated! Please do it again? And seeing the character was 1 thing, but recognizing the voice of the REAL "Just Jolene'??? Needless to say, the basement...was indeed... flooded... Absurd, great episode this week, good job! Lower Decks wasn't bad either...
The Beagle was also the name of the ship Charles Darwin travelled on, which ties into what Captain Sloane said about observing humanity's possibilities in different realities: she and her crew got to see different versions of how human (and presumably Vulcan) culture *evolved*
@ChristopherBrink Fun side-fact: Darwin was a member of the Glutton Club at Cambridge, a club dedicated to tasting every exotic animal they could acquire. Ol' Charlie did, in fact, cook and eat one of every specimen he studied on his voyage
You have no idea how many times I literally gasped out loud watching this episode and how long I was waiting for this episode of ups and downs! Amazing amazing job as always, and you nailed it on the head Sean, what an absolute joy and gift of an episode this was! It might just already be in my top favorite episodes of all time! I’m going to be so sad next week when we don’t have any more lower decks, but hopefully as has been speculated on we see the characters in some other form going forward.
35:28 This also applies to reboots. People always ignore great practice of seeing how a story can be told differently, good or bad. It allows writers to flex their abilities.
I loved seeing all these legacy characters and ships. It was good seeing these characters have their own moments. It was a great episode. However I nearly cried when Prime Boimler freaked out at the end of the episode!😹
Harry's exclamation about there being multiple universes is actually "There are more than two dimensions?!?", which seems like both a sly nod to this being a 2D-animated cartoon, and a hint that this particular Kim may not actually be as smart as he thinks he is.
Took me a sec to remember what this reminded me of. Sci-fi spin-off, ends in fifth season, second-to-last episode, takes place in an alternate universe, ends with sending the problem to our universe. It's Stargate: Atlantis!
Beagle could also be a reference to the HMS Beagle, which was the ship that took Charles Darwin on the expedition that helped him develop the theory of evolution.
The HMS Beagle was the sailing ship that Charles Darwin explored the Galapagos Islands. Coincidently the name also connects to ENT as Archer's dog Porthos was a beagle!
This might just be one of my favourite episodes ever, the way I screamed at canon Garashir. I don't even care if they are from different realities and if Paramount had to change so many aspects of them just to make it happen, it's the best we will get and it's canon to me. Also had a heart attack every two seconds with the sheer amount of references.
I've been waiting for this episode for SO many years! (Since I saw the first episode of DS9) They FINALLY made it canon on screen! 🎉 If I die today, I die happy ❤ And I'm really looking forward to this week's Ups (this episode deserves no Downs in my book)
I hope Sean realizes that this episode is a retrospective on criticism the show has received from certain fans. I also hope he removes last week's erroneous "Down" about the placement of "Upper Decks" in the season. That placement (in the back half of the final season) is a reference itself. To TNG "Lower Decks" that aired in the back half of the final season and literally served as the inspiration for Lower Decks.
This had proper belly laugh moments, I am really going to miss ST:LD once it is done. Having said that this does mean they are finishing the show in a high and not letting it get stale. Sean breath, just breath. We know that the review of the 20 minute show will need to take 2 hours. We are here for it. In fact tag Ellie in for the first half of Cetacean Observations. Bring on next week!
i like the fact this episode also referenced the DS9 episode where bashir is revealed to be genetically enhanced - which was a big plot point for bashir - nice to see in at least one universe he did get used as the new EMH template afterall!
“There’s more than 2 dimensions?!?” Such a great line. In universe it’s because they know of prime & mirror. But it’s also an animation joke that it’s hand drawn 2D not computer (or live action) 3D!
Re: Garrick and Bashir. If someone doesn't like it, it's not canon to the prime universe. heck, they're not even from the same universes themselves. So in a multiverse, you should be able to handle one Garrick being with one Bashir. The multiverse episode was totally the plave to let the fan fiction tropes flow.
Understandable that the UPS and DOWNS is late a little. They had to find stores to get more UPS! For me, this is the greatest Lower Decks episode ever. One of the greatest Star Trek episodes from any Star Trek franchises. Please save Star Trek Lower Decks!
Thank you for a wonderful video. I have to watch this episode again. There were Easter eggs and such that you mentioned that I didn’t see so I’ll have to watch again. Thank you so much for a wonderful video and thank you so much for all your hard work and your clear love of the subject. I’m sad to see where this will end with lower decks, but can’t wait to see where it all goes.
Has there ever been a higher scored "ups and downs"? - imho, it's completely deserved, this is my personal favorite episode of lower decks so far. I can't wait to see what they do next season. (you hear me paramount!? I want to see what they do NEXT SEASON!)
I LOVED this episode! Though all the talk of promotions reminded me how Starfleet did our Brad Boimler dirty, taking his promotion away when they send him back to the Cerritos.
I’m not sure if this was meant as a reference or not but when William sends the message to Bradford it really reminded me a lot of the end of Extremis on Doctor Who when the Doctor send the warning to the real version of himself about the oncoming danger of the Monks. This was a fantastic episode and is probably now in my top 3 of Lower Decks to be honest. Great video Sean and I will see you guys next week for the Finale.
This is the first UPs and Downs this season you put up after I watched the episode. I got to watch it when it went up for once. Lazy writing is not just alternative universe Star Trek thing! I'd say time travel is also guilty of this in Star Trek. The only thing missing was a plethora of Jeffrey Combs. Nice video people!
You know this is an extremely good episode because Sean clearly had to delay posting this episode of Ups And Downs in order to calm down to merely hovering slightly above the ground with giddiness. Second week in a row I called the latinum up because the guest cast was amazing and Curzon's assuring that everyone would get a chance to get their ass kicked was at least my highlight quote of the episode.
There's a clear reference to Star Wars : A New Hope (Greedo shooting first). T'lyn just quickly moves her head out of the way of Rutherford's plasma shot......brilliant! :)
I loved this episode. There was huge amounts of fanservice, but it was so exciting and so well done! I thought it was clever how they used the multiverse to make some fancanon things happen. Funnily enough, it was only last week I was reading an article with Alexander Siddig saying he didn't want to come back to Trek for a cameo and was thinking how Lower Decks would be the ideal vehicle for him to do just that and bring something new to the character. I had lamented that it probably wouldn't happen given the end being so near, so I am hugely grateful. They have set the bar high for the finale. I hope we go out with a bang!
I'm sure someone else has already pointed it out, but when Harry Kim asked "You mean there are more than two dimensions?", I don't believe he was talking about two realities so much as a gag on Lower Decks (and this episode) being a 2-dimension (cartoon) show versus a 3-dimension live action show, similar to the gag at the end of ST:SNW episode "Those Old Scientists".
The sound of the Anaximander accelerating to Warp seems to be the same sound of the Enterprise-D warping at the end of Encounter at Farpoint. I would have liked to have seen at least one 'Keten' in the background somewhere.
I keep thinking about Engineer Mariner. She's never been in jail, so she's probably never been demoted. She's also not very adventurous. I think this Mariner is like the Picard from Tapestry, not sticking her neck out so she never got noticed for promotion. Unlike that Picard, though, we see her step up and take a big risk this episode so hopefully her career will be more successful than his! Edit to add: You missed the connection with the Beagle's name to HMS Beagle, the ship Darwin was on.
You missed a major plot hole: detecting the warp signature of the Phoenix was how the Vulcans knew to divert to Earth to make first contact, so if Lillie and Zef didn’t have a warp drive, how did they meet the Vulcans? Also, would be cool to close the loop on the random Picard season 2 “threat” that shot energy out of a random hole in space…wishful thinking, but would be cool if the energy absorbed by Jirati’s Borg and the Sagan class (with other ships) was actually the energy dissipated from this event. Either way, absolutely incredible episode. One of the best. True Trek.
100% agree this was a great episode. The Tupol and Lily cameos was so unexpected in a good way! It is a shame that Lower Decks is coming to an end. Here are my predictions and would-be-great-to-see-things in the series finale: * Terry Farrell cameo is almost a no-brainer. Tupol will pass along Kurzon's memories to her. * How cool would it be to have the original TNG "Lower Deckers" (Sam Lavelle, Nurse Ogawa, and Taurik) show up to either help save the universe or give accomendations to the Cerriotos' lower deckers? * Will Gary Mitchell play a part in how they will fix the whole quantum fissure problem? Remember in Lower Decks 1.1, when Mariner says Gary Mitchell's name, Bohmler said "Who?" Lower Decks is great in bringing deep cut characters back to the spotlight. *To have the series go full circle, would love to see the "second contact" work the Cerritos crew did, namely installing a communications array for the Galardonians way back in episode 1.1. play a key role in saving the day.
It's unbelievable that Paramount canceled Lower Decks ahead of this amazing season... I loved this episode. I'm so bummed that this might be the second to last episode ever.
I don't know if any other Star Trek covered the shape of the multiverse before this episode, but Star Trek Online was where I first heard them described as spheres, specifically talking about the Kelvinverse. This, and seeing the Enterprise-F (however briefly) in Picard, it's nice to see some nods towards STO and the beta canon of Trek.
For the first time in the entire run on Lower Decks I overtly gasped and said "Ohh, I cannot wait to see Sean's FACE in 'Ups & Downs'!!!"
It’s only a 25 minute episode, so I think the record of 81 ups from Those old Scientists is safe. Otherwise this could have given the record a serious challenge.
Me too.
Absolutely, I laughed so hard during this episode and can't wait to see the ups and down...especially c.o.

That’s what I was going to mention. I thought the Darwin reference was obvious.
32 years of Trek went into this episode
my entire life watching trek went into this episode. so rewarding
Jolene Blaylock was the glue of Enterprise. She was treated shabbily on that show. Great to see her back, fwiw.

i like the fact this episode also referenced the DS9 episode where bashir is revealed to be genetically enhanced - which was a big plot point for bashir - nice to see in at least one universe he did get used as the new EMH template afterall!
0:52 🎶 “A very good place to start.”
“There’s more than 2 dimensions?!?”
Such a great line.
10:00 *The guest KISS* is all our and yours Gashir hearts. ❤🖖
Watching this episode I was like "Sean is going to lose his mind over this one..."
"Kirk-Fu" Oh, that's spot on. I feel your enthusiasm for this Sean.
This opening sequence to your video is amazing!
I was quite concerned Sean would have a stroke or something lol
I LOVED this episode! Though all the talk of promotions reminded me how Starfleet did our Brad Boimler dirty, taking his promotion away when they send him back to the Cerritos.
Best of all T'Pol isn't just there for a quick one line cameo (like Q) or a scene (like Sulu). She plays a major role in this episode.
Same with the others!
All the guests did!
The fact the Joleen came back makes this easliy one of my favorite episodes of trek ever.
one of the best parts for me was Kim saying "That engineering nonsense wont work on me"
There's a clear reference to Star Wars : A New Hope (Greedo shooting first).
Just watched the episode and oh my frigging Jebus it was fantastic!
Here are my predictions and would-be-great-to-see-things in the series finale:
* Terry Farrell cameo is almost a no-brainer.
With the name of The Beagle... I also thought of Darwin's boat the HMS Beagle
Beagle is also a callback to TOS "Bread & Circuses." The S.S. Beagle, itself a reference to Darwin's ship, took Captain R.M. Merrick to planet 892-IV.
It's unbelievable that Paramount canceled Lower Decks ahead of this amazing season... I loved this episode. I'm so bummed that this might be the second to last episode ever.
Did anyone else notice that Brad Boimler's beard looks like Wiliam Wrikers TNG beard? Only me?
I don't know if any other Star Trek covered the shape of the multiverse before this episode, but Star Trek Online was where I first heard them described as spheres, specifically talking about the Kelvinverse. This, and seeing the Enterprise-F (however briefly) in Picard, it's nice to see some nods towards STO and the beta canon of Trek.
