  • Racing my Phoenix F1k.12, a 2013 F1000 open-wheel race car currently classed in Formula Atlantic by the SCCA, at the 2022 June Sprints at Road America in Wisconsin. This is the start of the Sunday race and the first eight laps. The race was a split start; the P1/P2 group started about half a lap before the FA group.
I often find it awkward to watch myself drive, as doing so highlights to myself all of the things I could have done better. I'm braking too early, not using all of the track, not consistently hitting certain apexes, using a lower minimum speed through corners than necessary, and not staying flat through sections that should be flat.
Even so, I managed a new PR during this race (2:14.52, an improvement over my PR from last year of 2.1 seconds), and after starting P7 in class, I finished P4.
Just being able to compete was satisfying. Sean and I spent Friday night and Saturday morning doing an engine swap in the paddock due to a combination of gearbox issues on the Suzuki GSXR1000 engine and overheating caused by a failed hose clamp.
