Yeah. This gear ratio is good in circuits like this ( Monza, Nurburgring, Le Mans.. etc ).. But in short and small circuits he well be suffering in acceleration.
The minute you went into 3 & 4 the first time, still bump drafting at 100+, I was so hyped up. Cherry and you worked unbelievably well together. Out right at the corners with a dab of earlier brake and then right back to the bumper as soon as you could, and he'd look back and tuck in just before it. Man that was awesome to watch.

Same here. I raced a Komet 135 enduro there in 94 I think. Top speed was 146 ! Listen to this , anytime I was exceeding 135-ish, the lowest part of the fiberglass seat (right under my butt) would get so hot I had to lift my butt up...first time I felt it, I thought I had a fire . no rub marks on the belly afterwards either. I always assumed static electricity . I was OK with finished 3rd considering all the drama
@@MHal312 Noticed the engine lost power. It topped out at 102 without drafting and slowly started loosing speed and was unable to obtain the speed from the previous lap without bump drafting.
I did this in the late 80s. I am riding along, and I still remember almost every turn. Doesn’t seem like things have changed much. Engine, tires, the way the air moves the Karts around, and the skittering under hard braking coming off of the big track, all look very familiar. Great run, great video.
Terrific video. So fun to watch. I played with some fast Karts on a few occasions with a guy (Tom Geerz, Grand Rapid, MI). He used to do shifter Karts around the US.. including Daytona. If I recall teh shifters back on the late 80's got up near 125 / 130 at Daytona. I watched them for a few hours in 1989. Seemed so slow from the infield. Your camera did a great job of letting the speed be felt. So jealous. I'm 60 now. He's gotta be 70+. Awesome job.

Every year between Christmas and New Year's since 1977. You got to see the 250 class,someone ran 160 mph there last year in a lay down with a 250 single Viper motor.

Kogan - that gear ratio choice was spot on for the track! I started in karts, then sprint cars and several IndyCar test sessions in the 90s. My wife always said "you're really slow then you speed up, why?!" LOL Just showed her your run here and after 25 years together she gets it. Wind up slow, but when you're on -- you're on! Great job!

Almost like forgetting where you are and missing your break marker. That's how I think I would feel any aways. That was super cool though. I really like how you let the other diver back in after the push. I have no karting xp, but I would love for iRacing to figure out a way to make a model for leaning and sliding like y’all do. Can’t just put Karts into iRacing and expect it to feel real. It won’t and they would need to develop something different. You got yourself a new fan.
Well I mean with the game/sim engine and physics. Maybe you do too. So the sim would need a way to capture users leanning inputs and somehow convert that into something in the game. Hmm might be with me doing a RUclips video about it and getting iRacing attention. It would be sick to get a real kart sim. Yeah VR would help translate that data to your mind but I guess the term we are looking for here is motion tracking input. Epic video.

it would have the same top speed because they use the highest posisble sporket. so the rpm will limit it. the top rpm of the shifter and the ka would be about the same. however the shifter will reach the top speed fast

@@bunnyman6321 When they form those kind of "trains of karts" and bump into each other. Karts behind experience much less drag and they contribute to push forward the kart on the front, so bump drafting allows a group of karts to go faster than if they were alone.

I would love to see the Nascar drivers have these kinds of races ! Maybe 20 laps or so. But this is pretty cool until then !! The closest thing we have to this in Dallas, is Dallas Karting Cimplex... and if I remember, the track is 2 miles. And the karts run 60 mph... Still pretty amazing at that speed

Clearly, they were working together; 469 moved over for the camera kart at the checkered. Was it all to help out 469? Are they teammates? Either way, great racing. 100+ mph in a cart? More please. Brass monkey balls to do this. Next level drafting on show, you don't see three pushing in a row around Daytona lap after lap, confidence in the driver in front and behind. 100 mph might be slow to some but when your butt is inches above ground it's still fast enough to hurt!
Sure it’s been mentioned but I’m assuming the speed was due to sprocket sizing. Were the slower karts a different class? Maybe canned exhaust? I saw no tuning in the beginning when race first started. Thing of the past? Used to race karts 40 plus years ago. Glad this popped up in my recommended. Not sure why, but cool. Without looking it up, not even sure it’s still going on here in SoCal air surrounding area. Many of the tracks here have become shopping centers or housing developments.

I’d be wearing bike roadracing gear (leathers, gloves and boots)! No way I’d do 100+ speeds in a kart around Daytona with no suspension and not dress for the off!! They’re wearing cloth driving suits!!! Just nope.
That was my first thought. But also, if for any reason someone get's turned right on the banking up into the wall, they're going head first into a catch fence at around 50-65mph by the time they get there. Those karts will happily catapult you out in the last direction it was facing upon impact.

My ex Father in Laws brother used to race these..We got to go to these races at Daytona about 30 years ago..I will never forget standing in the pits and just being awstruck at how big and cool it was

The engines would never hold up..... You'd have to change engines, drivers, tires and refuel.....

No jets on this engine. Well that you change out anyways. We were running about 14K around this track. We get up to 17K on a sprint

Thanks for the excellent racing video. I was holding my breath the entire run. I couldn’t help but wonder if there are small gains to be made in getting more “aero”. Tucking my shoes under the fairing, and the most form fitting suit and aero helmet.

My ex Father in Laws brother used to race these..We got to go to these races at Daytona about 30 years ago..I will never forget standing in the pits and just being awstruck at how big and cool it was
