Road America - June 2024 - F1000 - New PR lap: 2:11.3
Aside from the SHAKY, TERRIBLE new forward-facing camera mount (ugh, sorry), this lap went pretty well. I'm in my 2013 Phoenix F1k.12 F1000 race car, classified as a Formula Atlantic (FA) for the 2024 SCCA June Sprints at Road America. This was during the Friday practice session. I improved on my previous PR around Road America in this car by about 3.2 seconds, and I still see a ton of room for improvement. Hoosier R35B tires, bone-stock K7/K8 GSXR-1000 engine. Note the secondary camera angle showing the chain, shifter, rear-left suspension, wing, etc.

Rear-facing camera on F1000 race car showing suspension and chain
Просмотров 5174 месяца назад
This is the view from a rear-facing camera on a Phoenix F1k.12 F1000 race car, which is a bike-engine powered downforce open-wheel car. Ignoring the copious amounts of tripod grease fling (yeah, yeah...), this footage offers a rarely seen view of the suspension moving, the 530-series chain moving around (despite being freshly tensioned), and the pneumatic Geartronics shift actuator rotating the...
Crash at Road America - Race 1 FA FX FC for June Sprints 2023

This video shows how my F1000 (Formula Atlantic) season ended this past weekend at Road America during Race 1 of the June Sprints when I was forced off the track and slid into a wall. It's presented as a learning experience. The driver of the black and red #27 Ligier F3 car, Jon Collins (of Illinois USA, not the Australian driver by the same name), missed the apex of Turn 1, ran off the track d...
COTA Super Tour 2023 (SCCA) Sunday race: FA FC FX FE2 P1 P2

This was the Sunday race at Circuit of the Americas as part of the 2023 Super Tour for the SCCA, for the FA, FC, FX, FE2, P1, and P2 classes. Filmed onboard / in-cockpit in my F1000 with a GoPro. The start was waved off, which was an annoyance. Later, several laps of FCY were required to deal with an incident involving several FX cars, including the "cow car"-livery FM formerly of Denver. Final...
High Plains Raceway F1000 hot lap - 1:43.41

This is my current PR lap (as of late 2022) in my 2013 Phoenix F1K.12 F1000 race car. It occurred during qualifying for the 2022 SCCA "Last Chance" race at HPR. Despite a disaster of a first sector, I still managed to knock 0.4 s off of my previous PR in this car. I subsequently won the Saturday race outright and was leading my class in the Sunday race until two laps from the end when my thrott...

This was my then-new PR lap (since improved) around High Plains Raceway in Byers, Colorado: a 1:43.8 while driving my 2013 Phoenix f1k.12 F1000 race car, classed as an FA by the SCCA. This lap of HPR was during the practice session for the 2022 Freedom Sprints race. Weather was good. R35B tires, second heat cycle. As always, plenty I could have done better, but considering this was a full secon...

Racing my Phoenix F1k.12, a 2013 F1000 open-wheel race car currently classed in Formula Atlantic by the SCCA, at the 2022 June Sprints at Road America in Wisconsin. This is the start of the Sunday race and the first eight laps. The race was a split start; the P1/P2 group started about half a lap before the FA group. I often find it awkward to watch myself drive, as doing so highlights to myself...

The Formula Atlantic (FA) race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the 2021 SCCA Runoffs. I was driving my 2013 Phoenix F1K.12 F1000 race car, which races as an FA these days. This video follows me from when I leave the garage before the race, continuing for the entire race, and ending when I return to the garage after the race. Thanks to Sean for the video from the garage to the grid, and thank...
Ultra-wet race start at High Plains Raceway

This was the ultra-wet start to the Saturday race for the 2021 Freedom Sprints run by the SCCA at High Plains Raceway in Colorado. I was on outside pole in my FA-classed F1000 for the run group, and a P1 was on pole. Neither of us had rain tires handy, so we were running slicks. The cars gridded in the row behind us, a Swift 014a and an FM, *were* running rain tires. The video shows us leaving ...

A lap at High Plains Raceway in my F1000 race car, a 2013 Phoenix F1k.12, featuring a data overlay over the onboard video. Lap time was 1:44.805 officially. This lap of HPR was done during the practice session for the "Freedom Sprints" SCCA Majors race weekend on July 3, 2021. Lots of time still on the table. All the usual suspects: sub-optimal line, braking too long, braking too softly, not ge...

Race 2 for Formula Atlantic (FA) of the 2021 June Sprints at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI. I'm in my 2013 Phoenix F1k.12 F1000, hot off an engine swap in the paddock due to a gearbox failure. Air temperature was in the low 90s, and humidity was high. The video shows the race start and then lap 10. Things were going well until I started having more gearbox (or possibly paddle-shifter) issues...

This is a lap at High Plains Raceway (HPR) in Colorado in my 2013 Phoenix f1k.12 Formula 1000 car, classed as an FA. I did it in 1:45.86, which though since surpassed, shaved about three seconds off my previous PR. This was in the first qualifying session for the Freedom Sprints SCCA Majors race on July 4, 2020. Still lots of room for improvement: I'm braking too early, slowing too much, liftin...
High Plains Raceway in Assetto Corsa / Tatuus FA-01

New PR lap (1:40.8) in Assetto Corsa driving High Plains Raceway. The simulated car is a Tatuus FA-01 that's set up to be extremely similar to my real-life Phoenix F1000. The sim Tatuus is slightly heavier and has slightly less horsepower but makes more torque. Top speed in 6th gear at the end of the "highway straight" is about the same in both, roughly 131 mph.

A couple of laps from the open lapping day at High Plains Raceway (HPR) in Colorado on May 29th, 2020. Never really had any totally clean/clear laps that's how track days go sometimes and I hadn't been on a track in over seven months, so times weren't great. As you can see, I was braking early, coasting, over-slowing, not getting back on the throttle very fast, missing apexes, being in the wron...

Great lap brother
Really impressive! Crazy how late you can brake and how much corner speed you carry. 2:11 is fast!
Amazing experience man, don’t listen to all of these broke jealous people who can only dream about having what you have. Keep it up!
This was pretty bad. I honestly couldn’t tell if you were racing or just out for a leisurely drive. And I don’t mean during the fcy
Nice!
Sir you are flying!
I really like your racing line here
Beautiful!
must've been hella fun 🥷🏻👑
The reason you spun is that unfortunately your budget is bigger than your racing experience. The tires were stone cold and pressures low because you used the warm up lap like a grandma taking a Sunday drive. Those stickers should have been completely gone before the green flag. The tire temps and pressures should have been almost to max before the green flag. How do you do this, you may ask? Wide open throttle, then braking hard almost to lock up, then wide open throttle, repeat. If you dont know this you have no business driving those cars there bud. Next question...who the F are you, right? I won 2 Championship one step under Indy Car. 2 Drivers went straight to F1 out of the cars I drove and won in. On an oval, I sacrificed 2 of my 3 green flag qualifying laps to fully get heat into the brakes and tires. I came into turn 3 for the last lap, hit wide open throttle for one lap, took the pole. So ya I know what I'm talking about. Learn and Good luck :)
Bro i wanna use part of your video in my shorts I'll tag you can i use it?
Honestly, WTF! I seriously question that driver's judgment while re-entering the track.
SCCA = wankers with lots of money.
Pretty sad when you have to combine "6" classes for one race.
Warm your front tires with brakes on the out lap
Dude went to the Kimi school for warming tires.
absolutely insane. well done.
Congratulation very good driving
Great heads up driving.
That was pretty cool. Stunk about the early spin. Quick recovery and got it going again. Good dodge with the spin front of you. I was able to participate in the SRF3 race on Sunday. Just way too much fun. I had to get in through the last chance qualifier. Started 8th, finished 8th in that race to set positions 61 - 72. Started the race on Sunday in 68th and finished 49th. It was pretty cool out there on Thursday evening with all of the people watching.
SCCA has always been full of rich wankers. But much worse now days.
Let go of the wheel, protect your wrists.
I think you did a great job, but it makes me wonder what the other guys were doing to stay that far ahead of you,,...
Equipment $$$
Confidence
Don't stress it you will become faster with more experience " To win you first have to finish "
This should be a crime
Who cuts across like that?? Such a rookie/dumb move.
What the hell was he thinking?
There was a single vehicle crash in the kink in Sean’s Sunday AM race. Came in low instead of on line. You’d think by 3-4 days there he’d know you can’t do that. Quite frustrating.
That sucks... watching this, and the SRF crash, seems like they just don't even teach "both feet in" any more in schools... just roll around wherever you may, and damn the consequences...
Little IQ exists anymore with all the twitch streamers getting paid into racing now
It took a few replays at 1/4 speed playback, but I did end up agreeing that he chose to take that low speed dive back onto the racing line. At first I was going to say that it looked like a continuation of his loss of control, but the stewards know best. Rough way to end a season - though colliding with 27 would have surely been worse. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing this. It was a great ride.
So you were in super unlimited?
Absolutely loved the conversations with the crew chief and how that’s all recorded. Great setup and nice racing!
Takeaway: When it's overcast and everybody else is scrubbing in, it might be time to take notes so I don't end up in the grass. Of course, that's one way to get a clear line.
Really enjoyed that guy jumping the start that severely, thats some self confidence!
Hey.. Good run! What camera are you using?
Thanks! GoPro Hero 7 Black.
This is fantastic!
I keep on watching this video, still can’t believe you did this on slicks, BUT, you had those karting reflexes to stay off the rubbered racing line ^^ I love this vid!!!
I am just about to start my SCCA journey. I hope to one day soon line up with you in FA
good comeback drive after the spin, i'm not a professional nor have i even gotten to race in a series or SCCA, but warming the tires even doing brakes and throttle together a little would've made worlds of difference. I wanna race in a series like FA but idk how i even start or get to that point, i cant even manage to get a car or crew if i did get my license. any reccomendations or tips on how to get there? im a decent driver but want to try to go into something like SCCA. i dont expect an answer but if you happen to see this let me know!!
Is F1000 the same thing as an F1 car?
unfortunate spin on the opening lap on sticker tires, I still hope you enjoyed your Runoffs experience. There are lessons to be learned here, and I assume and hope you are better racer after that experience. Obviously rotating the car back & forth to scrub in the tires would of been a good call, when dealing with a low ambient temperature like that morning I'd suggest being really hard on the brakes to generate heat. Even to the point of doing very minor lock ups or riding the brakes while simultaneously adding throttle. Additionally, I’d recommend lighting up the rear tires, I tend to do that as I enter pit lane. I attached a video of the front runner in P2 and you can see how dodgy they were on the brakes during the pace car lap. One last trick would of been to do a hardship lap on your sticker tires to scrub them in pre-race (wink wink). ruclips.net/video/wbHmct8VK70/видео.html
That's a hell of a downforce package you have. It makes 5-8lbs of downforce just sitting in grid!
You could just go I RACING FOR THAT TYPE OF CRAP ! Spend all the time money hart ache and do 6 LAPS wow
It was a bummer, but still, after driving the rFactor 2 version of the Indy GP course many, many times over the past few months (the iRacing version is outdated but slated for an update), it was still a bunch of fun to drive the real thing. I just wish they would have kept it green through the rain. We were ready to switch to rains in the hot pits. That would have been so much fun!
I was shocked that you didn’t warm your tires on the pace lap. Not a weave, not a single hard braking or hard acceleration. The tires were cold cause you didn’t do anything to build heat in them…..no surprise you spun when you gassed it…..stupid question but is tire warming a skill you haven’t learned or did you just goof? It happens, hopefully the experience helps you in the future.
@@bryancohn9406 And just how many races have you been in ?
@@CORNDODGER been racing since age 17, two SCCA Runoffs, one podium at the NASA Championships, seven divisional titles (admittedly not all were very competitive fields but four of them were), owned over 30 different race cars, driven over 60 different race cars in over 40 different classes, owned a race prep shop ‘90-‘02 before going to work for sanctioning bodies in executive roles and I trained at Skip Barber Racing as a driving instructor/coach, working for the company 90-95. Oh and I work as a driving coach currently, just back from the new track, Ozarks International Raceway from a private testing day. One of the things I teach ALL my clients, HPDE, Time Trial, Racing is how to warm tires by loading them via turning, acceleration and braking. That’s the whole purpose of pace laps for rolling starts or sighting laps for standing starts. Total race count is well over 400. David, long story short I’m more than qualified to ask why the driver didn’t warm his tires. I knew he was screwed when the stickers were still on the tires at the green, that only happens when the tires are still cold. A simple lighting up of the rear tires leaving pit lane would have helped, the lazy spin is exactly why you see professionals and gentlemen drivers light up the rears after pit stops, so they don’t Loop it on cold rear tires. At 56 I’m still racing, restoring two vintage race cars, a 1975 FV and 1959 HProd Bugeye. Gonna try something different with my racing after having run amateur club racing stuff for 35 years. Oh and in my professional mechanic career in the 80’s and 90’s I worked as crew chief in World Challenge & F2000, plus as a wrench on Trans Am, Can Am (final season), Indy Car, and more. My post might have come off a bit harsh I admit but i was so surprised that a driver in an F1000 car wouldn’t know anything about tire warming.

It's possible that what you're seeing is the built-in relief for the rebounding hammer mechanism. This is mentioned in period catalogs.
Kinda ballsy though that you drove with slicks on…!
If I'd had rain tires, I definitely would have used them! :D
