    Hey luke up here in alaska when were storing our metal pots out side we lay a chain over them to depolorize them, i didnt really believe the theory behind the idea till i tried it for myself but i split my pots up one year an identified them with zipties, my depolorized pots fished about an extra 10% over the pots i just painted and didnt depolorize, hope this idea reaches you brother waterman.good luck and tight lines.

      That's interesting. I wonder if any studies been done on electric charge of decaying matter either positive or negative? Then instead of or in addition to real bait put a slight charge on the pot and adjust based on results. 🤔

      @@aha27 absolutely. Depending on where you are , if you can take it at a tech school near you or you could go to one of these welding schools and give it a go. It’s not for everyone but you can make a good living doing it. Learn pipe fitting as well. It will definitely serve you well down the road. A lot of good fitters were welders first and picked it up along the way. You have to have fairly “thick skin” because there can be a lot of Brutal Honesty in the trades in general. When you are new, ask questions if you have them, use common sense and listen to any decent advice the old guys like myself will give you. Best of luck and I hope you find that you do enjoy it.

      The greedier the government gets, the harder it gets for the average lower class person to try to make in on there own in a business. You end up having to take a much bigger risk to get a company going. A risk that could cost you everything. Obviously this has always been the case with starting/running a business but I feel like the risk has increased so much in 100 years.

    Man come to Texas Coolbots here are only $350-$400 that’s retail store, a lot cheaper at the HVAC Contractors Supply House. Then get some BBQ,BlueBell and Beaver Nuggets and enjoy some warm weather before you go home.

      ​@joshuacarr6865 how much are they over there? In the UK the same style and size pots are on average about £100 so $120. I doubt there were over 630 crab pots there. Based on the space 462 take up in Plymouth fish market.

      To get one made here would be between 150 to 200 dollars.. possibly more the materials would be close to that
      A Chinese made nylon net pot cost at least 60 dollars here..
      And that a hobby fishing man's pot

    Thanks for all you hard work and trust me, I crabbed a TON when I was a kid, made 5 bucks an hour (which was silly!!) as a kid in the mid 80's to go help a local guy here in southern Maryland go crabbing. Still go out on the river from time to time a drop a few pots. Keep up the good work man, and hope your new boat stand brings in a ton of $$$

    Yeah it ain’t cheap but neither are the crabs. I had 5 dozen rusty males last sat for a day with my kids it was a great day with local GA white shrimp and such cost;
    South east coast of GA prices
    Crabs - $125
    Shrimp 10 pounds $92
    Stuff for boil $66
    Drinks- $28
    Ribs/4 $33
    Chickens/2 $16
    Fun with family and friends immeasurable !

    Yeeeeah. Growing up in Maine I would drop lobster traps with my best friend. We had his dad’s hand me down traps and gear from his old boat. It is very very expensive but if you have a great line set the reward is pretty great! It’s a lot of hard work and a flip of the coin most days

    Dang. I knew there was alot of over head and initial costs but man...thats a ton. How often do you have to get new pots? Zincs im guessing is yearly or every other year depending on time in the water?

    Damn It Man !!! I knew it was expensive but I had no clue it was that crazy. People never really see what’s behind the curtain of most businesses and after they do they realize it isn’t all unicorns and rainbows. Not that anyone thought crabbing was easy. lol.

    Good thing about Maryland is when you get your crabbing license you buy it off of someone and that generally means you’ll buy they’re equipment still not cheap but easier to start off. You can’t get a crabbing license until someone gives theirs up. From my understanding anyways. Someone correct me if I’m wrong?

      He probably either was born to a crabbing family or bought someone’s business who was done that’s the way you get into these types of things usually. I work in a certain trade and in our trade magazine I see classifieds all the time of a guy in location x selling his entire shop and customer base for X00,000 dollars but if you have the down payment money or percentage to go to the bank and get the rest loaned and can show the records that it’s a profitable venture then you’re in business. Not at all trying to take away from what this guy does I have family that lives in Pasadena the same area he does my ex went to the same high school he did, crabs are huge here he’s doing great for himself he may not be rich one way but we can all see he is in the way that counts

    Hi Luke from New Zealand.
    Just a few wise words from a realist that's 55. Get a 20' reefer container or a reefer artic trailer that has electric & diesel for yard running. A crab roll food wagon, with coffee. Have a few picnic tables etc, etc. Fence the frontage also just to keep honest folk at bay. Always think outside the box 😊😊

    Looks about right… I figured just about any trade these days cost about $150,000 to get a proper rig, proper tools, etc. And people wonder why stuff gets expensive

    Why not make your crab pots out of coated wire like we do Maine lobster traps? It might cost more initially but you wouldn’t be wasting time and money on paint and zincs every year.

    It's pretty much just like other agricultural pursuits.
    Buy everything at retail and sell everything at wholesale.
    Or, whatever people will pay you for it.
    52 yr old hobby farmer here... I couldn't imagine trying to make a living as a farmer/fisherman/crabber.
    It's a hard life...but very internally satisfying.
    More than anything else I've ever done.
    I'm 52 yrs old with a 34 year established career.
    Can't stand my job.
    I just want to do farm type stuff.
    What a conflicted life🙄
    I like your "fire" man...keep it up and I hope you kill it in life👌

    Does the paint do an ineffective job at preventing rust on its own or conversely the zinc on its own? Is the use of pained pots and zinc pots required to preserve the steel?

    Most of those things will last more than a season. Some will last many seasons like the truck, boat and fridge. Are you going to do one of these that shows what you make in a year? I’d be surprised if you did.

    This is an amazing channel, this young man is keeping his hustle legit, I must ask though, why do the crabbing? Can you make back in a season what you must spend each season? Obviously it will be quite a few seasons to recoup your start up cost, factoring that in and having no idea about all the numbers I would say 2-5 years before you might start making a profit. Again a complete guess but that’s like restaurant projections and you can’t sink to the bottom of a restaurant.
    Sir, follow your passion. Been a fan of your channel for a minute now and every video I’ve watched show your quality of character. Ya got honor and integrity, and seem to genuinely be a stand up guy. I wish you and your family much joy and success with little tribulations and sorrow.
