It's a lfe-style choice. Wonderful decision for me. 2024 figures in San Diego: 39 foot trawler, bought in 2014 was about 15% the cost of an average house in San Diego County. Due to market craziness, it has appreciated in value which is not something one can count on. Slip and live-aboard fee 1260. Boat payment is 610. Diver averages-out to 200 month but that is for three boats (39', 21' and 17') and includes zinc replacement. Water, cable, internet are free. Sewage pumper is 20 bucks per week if one does not want to move the boat to the free DIY pump-out. Insurance is about 1100/year. Maintenance is easy except for the big diesel... if you are a DIY guy in your house you'll be fine on the boat. Routine diesel maintenance is just as easy as routine maint on your car. Cylinder Head replacement (CAT 3116 -single) cost me 7K but that was due to my letting the previous owner off the hook; I had a stipulation in the contract but I screwed it up. Separate boat and engine surveys are a must! One more money-saving tip: Dual engines get you in the slip easier but I am an avowed single screw sailor. I see no reason to feed, cool and maintain two engines when one gets the job done. Also opens-up the engine room so one can move around a bit. I would also look at forgoing a generator unless you anchor-out a lot. An adequately-sized house bank with inverter is adequate for anchoring out for a few days a few times per year. I'm happy to answer yacht/live-aboard questions... CPO, USCG, ret. 10 year live-aboard.
@davecolman9446 what would be an estimate of an underpaint on a 1993 Silverton 34 aft be? I wouldn't be able to do this currently but would in the future. I am considering buying a boat and living aboard but seeing lots of different numbers. I'd be okay with a budget of $14K yearly for maintenance and electricity. I own a slip which is helpful. I would do most of the stuff myself including bottom scraping.
@@Kevin-zz9nc there are three areas in San Diego with Marinas. Mission Bay, Shelter/Harbor Island and South Bay (Chula Vista and National City. I live full time 6 months of the year on my Nordhavn 40 trawler and the other 6 months in my Mercedes Sprinter Van traveling Canada and USA. I Love both lifestyles, but if I would have to choose between the two - it would be a close call, but I would probably pick the Van life as it is easier in many aspects and living expenses are much cheaper and it gives you more freedom, flexibility and independence. When traveling on land I almost never use RV parks but with the boat staying at an expensive marina is sometimes inevitable and you depend on boatyards for maintenance haul-outs. My offshore insurance for my boat is the biggest expense followed by costs for maintenance, parts and upkeep. This is how to make out on living aboard!!!! Also, living in a house or condo isn't expensive in other countries, so you really don't have to live on the boat unless you want to. I always do the math and living in a RV in, say, Mexico, it's more costly than living in a house or condo.
Wondering why you have a diver dive the bottom so often. I'm a diver, and I might go down twice a year to clean the engine intakes and give the zinks a little wetsanding. I put prop speed on the props and trim tabs and lanolin on the shafts. I stay away from wiping the bottom off because it removes the paint and creates faster bottom growth.
I'm glad you ask that,I was wondering the samething. I agree 100% on it removing the bottom paint,(Of course I found this out the hard way) even doing the work yourself,it's an added expense that's not necessary,I figured just on the hall out alone,I could put that $$$ towards something above the Water line to increase the value of the Craft, that is unless you have a steel or wooden Craft
When I cruised in Mexico the barnacles were a problem. The warmer the water and the more polluted makes this problem worse. You are likely used to clean waters but let me assure you most of the world isn't like that. I dove on my boat weekly to find and scrape barnacles. I this this guy has the right idea, too bad he is so overweight he might have a heart attack if he does it himself.
So, it sounds like your Marine Trader costs about $2,000 a month including storage, depreciation/capital reserves. At that would be (very roughly) comparable to an apartment rent for say a 2 BR unit in a marina community.
My house is paid off here in a Detroit suburb. However I have monthly expenses: taxes insurance utilities maintenance. On my paid off house it still costs $1500 a month.
Thats crazy, you pay a diver to rub the bottom of your boat? Get a small hookah and do it yourself, plus they are great for shallow water diving On my PDQ Antares 44, I had a brownies third lung , never needed bottom paint, or haul out to replace anodes. In the eight years I had the boat, I only got hauled out once to repair damage from hitting something on a night passage to Bermuda.
As a beginner, what Trawler, length, motor config, accessories, etc would you recommend, I am a single retired Male, no wife, no kids, no pets, still in good shape, thanx...
Hi. New subscriber! Hope you get to that 10,000 soon. I have a 1981 glastron 21 ft 6 inch in florida so it's good to see a boater with some good information. Good luck and enjoy! Mike
Well I'm here to tell you you don't have to spend a hundred grand to get a boat to live on I've seen Bunches of that are very big and livable I mean have lots of room on them for around 20 or $30,000 or older boat but if you take care of a boat it'll last you a lifetime
It expensive we stay on the hook full time monthly rent and insurance zero , solar wind generator and natural water filter cuts out all utility bills you can actually save money not just keep spending it
How do you rate a Monk 36 for the loop. I am handy but have no training on diesel engines at all. I would be willing to train myself but not sure if that would be enough. Thank you for posting these videos.
I think I would prefer the rv or double wide. I don’t know that I would want to captain a 38 foot boat when I want to be on the water. Besides just the small tasks would get quite annoying: laundry, 🧺, getting groceries from the parking lot to the boat. I just don’t think a boat would be large enough for 2 and a doggo
My plans are to sell my home this coming fall. Then buy about 40-44 foot to live on. I already have someone who sells down in Wilmington NC looking around. I understand the part of renting a slip also shore power hook up. I also can do my own maintenance. I have heard fuel as of now is sky-high, is there a road tax added to the fuel? Not sure about freshwaters cost?
Thanks for sharing i’m trying to get my wife interested in this lifestyle unfortunately we live in a very nice home on acreage and i’m ready to try out living on a boat.
All good questions, insurance is very difficult to get on older boats. I do not claim live aboard to with progressive, so I tell people not to use that term analogy, you need an address.
Thank you for the information. How difficult is it to get financing on an older model boat - say older than 2005? Also with insurance if you are a newbie is it possible to get even basic Gen Liability?
Does anyone have any experience with noise in an urban setting on a liveaboard? Specifically, the Tidewater, Va area? I'm in the initial stage of living on a trawler but concerned about noise level and how people deal with it.
Yeah if you want to do some cruisin, get a sailboat. Trawlers are sweet, if your a the dock most of the year. If you wanna cruise better have deep pockets .
One of the commenters mentioned 'property tax'.... I don't understand why you have to pay property tax on a boat? I don't pay property tax on a car or truck or motorcycle or RV... so what is up with that? Thanks! New sub here. Good info!
@@NoRegretsLifestyle - I get that, but 'property tax' in any form I've ever seen is when you own a home / real estate or even just land... then you pay 'property tax'. A boat or RV or motorcycle or truck is not 'property' by any definition I've heard. But what ever... I still don't get. Cheers.
Buying your boat is actually not the highest cost. I'm nitpicking here, not necessarily criticizing your video, but the largest cost is a loss of economic opportunity. That means you lose the opportunity for your real house to rise in value. Boats sink in value. Houses rise (up and down, yes, but up overall). My house in California netted me one million dollars over the course of 25 years. Good luck finding a boat that will do that, or anything remotely close to that. But don't buy a house right now. Housing is due for a correction due to several factors. Buying two or three years from now will likely make sense. Perhaps the best course of action for someone who wants to live on a boat is to own a house they rent out as well as the boat. Then you're diversified and protected from inflation.
This life style is not about making money, if someone loves there money more then living life i would highly recommend not buying a boat it's not about the money. Personally when I die I won't get that plaque that says I made a million dollars from selling a house LOL, I hope to die dead broke and whats left will go to charity, but I like living this life style for now and giving to charity like I have for the last 5 years or so it makes me feel good.
That's easy to fix if you plan a bit. I sold my house, originally to build another one. The CV happened and all that stopped. So then I thought I would buy one. But now prices are too high. So I took all that money and invested the hell out of it. Spent time to learn how and just did it. Now instead of buying a house, or boat for that matter. I created a very respectable permanent income. This income is substantial enough to buy any boat I may want within a year. That gives me time to arrange all the details. And when I make a move. I will have all the income I need for the lifestyle with no work involved...
I heard you mention Gulf Shores in LA (lower Alabama) :) I'm just up the road near Auburn. I appreciate your video but wondered WHY DO YOU NEED A DIVER? I'm assuming they are inspecting the hull or some similar task but what is the criticality in that requiring it to be done every 4-6 weeks? Thanks again!
With what is happening to most condos in Florida, you are better off on a boat. I am planning a move there end of this year. Having looked into housing options. I have decided to just buy a boat instead. I am always looking for real videos about the lifestyle, and actual costs. Mostly you find young people with flashy boats. And flashy girlfriends or wives to sell the channel. I'm an old guy with a few bucks. Not looking for flashy anymore. You have earned a sub from me friend, and a big thumbs up...
I've lived in Florida for 32 years, the real estate market is going to crash in a yr. Only fools are buying now. Happens all the time. A Florida realtor will lie to you every time to get you to buy
@@RedtideFla I TOTALLY agree with you. I have been planning a move down there for about a year now. Was actually down there looking at homes and learning. That's why I'm looking at boats now. Perfect option. I want one anyway. And if Florida doesn't work out, I can just move the boat...
Could you please tell us which insurance company will insure a 40 year old liveaboard?and will they cover you outside US waters?..love your utube videos..thank you!
New subscriber 💪🏻So many factors to consider, but generally I think it's not cheap living on a boat. But the value that you get for your life could be unplayable. 10k subscribers 🤔 I have 150 😂
Wow, those are a lot of expenses for just like a $80,000 boat. Think I’ll stick with my condo , At $900 a month, including condo fees. And when I pay my condo off in a couple years, I’ll just be at $350 a month for condo fees..
I just wonder what you do at 10:00 pm when you have cramps and need to get to the bathroom? Do you use your own toilet? Move the boat every week to the pump out and back? Pay to have someone come by? I checked, in California it costs $50 per week for this. How do you get groceries each week, pack them in your hands, use a cart, or backpack? Lots of details you aren't mentioning about life at the marina.
Mike nothing is easy about living on a boat. we use the marina restrooms as much as posssible and we just drive and pump, it runs the boat and keeps her ready and skills ready at any time.
These boats don't burn a lot of fuel maybe 500.00 a year unless we really go somewhere. But even doing the entire Loop are fuel bill was only 8000.00 dollars to do 6000 miles
Trawlers burn anywhere from 1 gal/hr underway to 20 gal/hr. Figure out your own fuel costs based on your boat's burn rate. His cost is utterly immaterial to yours.

We spend about a grand a month. You can't find a decent apartment for that in Decatur. Ain't retirement great?
Thanks for the content. I'm in the beginning stages of choosing an RV or a Troller to live out my remaining days. Your video was helpful.
Glad it was helpful!👍🏻🙏❤️😉
So, it sounds like your Marine Trader costs about $2,000 a month including storage, depreciation/capital reserves. At that would be (very roughly) comparable to an apartment rent for say a 2 BR unit in a marina community.
Yes correct
With the exception that his "house" could sink at any time.
My house is paid off here in a Detroit suburb. However I have monthly expenses: taxes insurance utilities maintenance. On my paid off house it still costs $1500 a month.
Great breakdown of the finances involved with the lifestyle.
Awesome paradise lifestyle. Have fun and enjoy it. I be glad if U doing some fishing at Ocean and see how you cooking it. Life you said explore.
That's the plan! Your right I need to learn to fish someday
Thats crazy, you pay a diver to rub the bottom of your boat? Get a small hookah and do it yourself, plus they are great for shallow water diving
On my PDQ Antares 44, I had a brownies third lung , never needed bottom paint, or haul out to replace anodes. In the eight years I had the boat, I only got hauled out once to repair damage from hitting something on a night passage to Bermuda.
Iij use to live in Mobile and spent every weekend at Gulf Shores
Just discovered your channel looking into a captains license and am enjoying the content! 🙌🏻
thanks brother
As a beginner, what Trawler, length, motor config, accessories, etc would you recommend, I am a single retired Male, no wife, no kids, no pets, still in good shape, thanx...
Hi. New subscriber! Hope you get to that 10,000 soon. I have a 1981 glastron 21 ft 6 inch in florida so it's good to see a boater with some good information. Good luck and enjoy! Mike
Thanks Mike
Information is power, thank you for sharing
Glad it was helpful!
Living on boat is the best life especially when you live at a fun marina with pool and restaurant
Yes 👍🏻
Are you in a saltwater marina, hull maintenance is a huge expense .
Where is that marine ?
I see it is a lot more for dockage now ?
I am looking for a 30 or 33 for a live in boat . One person and no pets
I was at barbers before Sally came along where are you guys, I would love to meet up some time. Love your videos
I am at Homeport right now, should be back on the boat in a couple weeks
Well I'm here to tell you you don't have to spend a hundred grand to get a boat to live on I've seen Bunches of that are very big and livable I mean have lots of room on them for around 20 or $30,000 or older boat but if you take care of a boat it'll last you a lifetime
Yes I agree the one I live on now I only paid 25K for her and I love her not perfect but not bad
Thank you so much 🙏👍❤️
You're welcome 😊
It expensive we stay on the hook full time monthly rent and insurance zero , solar wind generator and natural water filter cuts out all utility bills you can actually save money not just keep spending it
This boat is not ready yet but I hope to get there soon
What is a natural water filter? Are you in salt water? It costs about $2500 for a water maker to turn salt water into pure. Plus membranes to buy.
How about the cost of fuel? I should think that might add up.
How do you rate a Monk 36 for the loop. I am handy but have no training on diesel engines at all. I would be willing to train myself but not sure if that would be enough. Thank you for posting these videos.
Thank you for watching, Monks are OK boats. 👍🏻❤️🙏😉
Marinas only requirement is basic liability. Which would be a few hundred a year , but if you sink your boat , no payoff.
reminds me of RV life on the water.
Yes about the same lived in our RV for 5 years and its about the same
I think I would prefer the rv or double wide.
Is the insurance something the marinas require, or do you have it for peace of mind? Would you need it if you only anchored in the bay?
Building our brand?? Ugll. 1st n last video for me. Definitely not trying to monetize retirement either. Safe travels. Cheers,ed
Thanks for the view
@@NoRegretsLifestyleyou have a great brand with lots of potential
What about “peace out”?🤮
Have you ever thought of 2 boats. One to stay on while you make repairs. What about the AirB&B ? Thanks. Great videos.
One is enough for me and yes I have thought about it but I am good for now.
Are you still on the boat? We have tossed the idea around
I live on Southern Estate full time, so when I am home she is it.
Thanks for sharing i’m trying to get my wife interested in this lifestyle unfortunately we live in a very nice home on acreage and i’m ready to try out living on a boat.
Best of luck! Need anything let me know. You guys make it to the keys maybe we take her for a ride 😂
What kind of boat insurance do you use? Do they allow liveaboards? Also, how does insurance work if you are a liveaboard?
All good questions, insurance is very difficult to get on older boats. I do not claim live aboard to with progressive, so I tell people not to use that term analogy, you need an address.
It depends entirely on the marina you are in.
Thank you for the information. How difficult is it to get financing on an older model boat - say older than 2005? Also with insurance if you are a newbie is it possible to get even basic Gen Liability?
Financing can be challenging, insurance is expensive now but no problem. 😉
Does anyone have any experience with noise in an urban setting on a liveaboard? Specifically, the Tidewater, Va area? I'm in the initial stage of living on a trawler but concerned about noise level and how people deal with it.
Not to nitpick, but you didn't include the expense of the bottom paint job amortized over whatever life cycle you plan.
Very true
what about Fuel costs?
It’s living on one not moving one. If you want to do loop you have to add fuel
Good info!
some states have property tax
@@NoRegretsLifestyle - I get that, but 'property tax' in any form I've ever seen is when you own a home / real estate or even just land... then you pay 'property tax'. A boat or RV or motorcycle or truck is not 'property' by any definition I've heard. But what ever... I still don't get. Cheers.
How much is spent on fuel each month or weekly, or everyday? If going out to fish?
small diesel 125 hp - 2 gal an hr - 7knts - up from there
Buying your boat is actually not the highest cost.
@@NoRegretsLifestyle Great. I have not qualms about you living your life like that. I though, have kids and want to leave them as much as I can.
This isn’t the way the housing market looks right now or for the foreseeable future unfortunately, nitpicky and outdated
I have my boats dived every month for cleaning and checking condition
With what is happening to most condos in Florida, you are better off on a boat. I am planning a move there end of this year. Having looked into housing options. I have decided to just buy a boat instead. I am always looking for real videos about the lifestyle, and actual costs. Mostly you find young people with flashy boats. And flashy girlfriends or wives to sell the channel. I'm an old guy with a few bucks. Not looking for flashy anymore. You have earned a sub from me friend, and a big thumbs up...
Thanks brother appreciate that, need any help feel free to call
I've lived in Florida for 32 years, the real estate market is going to crash in a yr. Only fools are buying now. Happens all the time. A Florida realtor will lie to you every time to get you to buy
@@RedtideFla I TOTALLY agree with you. I have been planning a move down there for about a year now. Was actually down there looking at homes and learning. That's why I'm looking at boats now. Perfect option. I want one anyway. And if Florida doesn't work out, I can just move the boat...
What does the diver do to your bottom.?
He wipes off any growth and inspection of running gear and through hulls
@@NoRegretsLifestyle My Mom used to do that for me once upon a time ;-))
is that the "median" price or the "average" price?
Median price there is always ways to cut
Thanks Paul!! Helpful
Happy to help! Thank you
Fuel? gallons/hour ? cost per gallon..it wasn't mentioned
Figure roughly $ 2. - 3 dollars every nautical mile in fuel cost. And that's being conservative, with single fuel efficient motor.
What is the insurance and things I need done for if I want to keep it docked and rent it out?
Not sure on that one our marina will not let us rent or Air B&B
What tasks does your diver perform at every dive?
Bottom inspection wheels and shafts and struts also looks at sea cock valves and we get a complete report every time with pictures
Thank you. Does he charge extra to actually change zines or clean the bottom?
Zincs
@@jamesdixon2167 they clean the bottom ever time and you do get a report on the zincs, they would be extra if he had to change one
Could you please tell us which insurance company will insure a 40 year old liveaboard?and will they cover you outside US waters?..love your utube videos..thank you!
We have Progressive right now
Thank you!
Great Video. Newby here. What does it cost (breakdown) to haul your Trawler and what did you have done?
Is there people who actually rent there boats put for people to live in?
Not sure on that one, I have not herd of that but you never know
Wouldn't a hybrid system for boats make a lot of sense?
Yes
Check out Greenline Yachts. Very cool boats. Diesel electric hybrids. Kinda like a WW2 submarine. Only no torpedoes...
you still using them flexible solar panels with the magnets holding them down?
Yes but I would not recommend them to anyone produce very little power
Paul the Real Deal here!
New subscriber 💪🏻So many factors to consider, but generally I think it's not cheap living on a boat. But the value that you get for your life could be unplayable. 10k subscribers 🤔 I have 150 😂
Yes time is everything when it comes down to it.
Are not boats made for sailing away ? If you're going to stay put why not buy an RV in a trailer park you won't have to clean the bottom or zinks ?
Mark RV's are much cheaper we own both. But your not taking your RV to the Dry Tortugas
Wow, those are a lot of expenses for just like a $80,000 boat.
Think I’ll stick with my condo , At $900 a month, including condo fees. And when I pay my condo off in a couple years, I’ll just be at $350 a month for condo fees..
Great video Thanks "best info"
Thanks appreciate
I’d rather be lost at sea then found at work any day.
William you get me LOL
500 a month sounds reasonable may I ask what area or state you’re located in ?
Alabama, but moving now
I just wonder what you do at 10:00 pm when you have cramps and need to get to the bathroom? Do you use your own toilet? Move the boat every week to the pump out and back? Pay to have someone come by? I checked, in California it costs $50 per week for this. How do you get groceries each week, pack them in your hands, use a cart, or backpack? Lots of details you aren't mentioning about life at the marina.
Mike nothing is easy about living on a boat. we use the marina restrooms as much as posssible and we just drive and pump, it runs the boat and keeps her ready and skills ready at any time.
Where does fuel fit into those numbers?
These boats don't burn a lot of fuel maybe 500.00 a year unless we really go somewhere. But even doing the entire Loop are fuel bill was only 8000.00 dollars to do 6000 miles
@@NoRegretsLifestyle So, your accounting is basically reflects a marina living lifestyle with occasional short trips out. Is that correct?
We are looking! We want a cruiser.
Nice I do like them let me know if I can help. I have one that I am going to do a video on tomrrow actually
@@NoRegretsLifestyle we really like Silverton and carvers but we are open. Definitely diesel. We live in Crestview
Paul Bates 702 885-7579
Why not talk about the fuel cost? That has to be extremely high right now if you move the boat at all. Nice video!
Trawlers burn anywhere from 1 gal/hr underway to 20 gal/hr. Figure out your own fuel costs based on your boat's burn rate. His cost is utterly immaterial to yours.
Following with interest
Thanks God Bless and have great day. Love to see new people coming aboard
Hello, I'm new here, thank you so very much for your detailed caveat emptor and summary. I read where a lot of states are restricting or banning live aboard options. Not really,my LLC ,paid expences.always ways to have luxury.

My boat is currently at Homeport for a few more weeks anyway
Why don't go on sailboat and go on the sea is cheaper and look like more freedom only good luck to you because the oli price going much higher than it is now 😆
I wanted to tell you that I live in a house you know but here's what I wanted to tell you. I know people where I live in my small town that live on the streets cuz I see him on the street inside a building or I mean excuse me outside of a building or whatever.
