I really liked the video I'm impressed that a 23 year old young man has his head on straight like you do. I'm 61 years old and finally sold our last boat it was a 36 ft trawler with twin Perkins diesels. They are very good on fuel and very sea worthy vessels. Before that one we had a 31 ft uniflite with twin Chrysler 318 small blocks gas engines that really sucked up the fuel I was glad to get diesels The fuel economy is way better and the engines last much much longer. Sailed from Lake Ontario thru the Erie Canal system to NYC. Cost $450 to take mast down and $400 to put back up. Spent $115 in diesel thru canal system at avg 4-5 knots. Then from NYC to Key Largo spent $210 in diesel when using the ICW in bad weather. Slept on board all but 3 nights, $380 in hotel rooms that had Jacuzzi tubs to " feel good " Spent $400 in groceries and $500 in beer for 2ppl. $120 in dog food. Moored 7 times at marinas to take advantage of electricity to do maintenance $400 there. Ate a ton of fish including 1 Bluefin Tuna that weighed in at 91 pounds. Gus! Good job young man!! This is a dream of mine as well. Thanks for sharing your experience. Skills will set you apart from the norms. You are in another world! I am very happy for you! Keep floating! Enjoy your boat! Nothing makes a man feel like a man more than, not just building, but taking something from its death bed and bringing it back. Short horror story: About 15 years ago my wife seen some ladies sunbathing on a boat and said I want to do that. So, I purchased a Chrysler 22 sailboat. Like yours it needed love. I worked hard on it. Brought it back. Rebuilt the trailer too. Bought a 10 foot inflatable island for sunbathing to go with it. I was on my very last step. Mounting the outboard engine mount. My wife calls and says,"I'm not getting on that boat." She said I spent too much time on the boat, even though I was doing it for her as well. It never made it to the water. I walked away. Broke my heart. It's been sitting ever since. I recently gave it to my son in hopes he will bring it back one more time. Now she wants a motor boat. Here we go again!! LOL!! To pull her back in, I just watch boating videos when she is around....LIKE YOURS!! SO thank you my friend! You helped!! Hopes to see you on the water!!
It also depends on what speed you want to push the yacht If you keep it around 6 to 8 knobs you'll probably get a very good economical fuel burn if you floor the throttles or or push it to 10 to 12 knots you'll probably get me refilling every 2 days
Outstanding. As a guy who’s first job out of college was working at a marina on winnipsaukee, and still boating around mass, with the hope of doing what you’re doing, I really appreciate this summary. You’re killing it. Greta job.
Forget the trip! I'm amazed that you did all the work yourself. I was a passenger aboard a 35 foot ship visiting the Greek isles. We had a bad storm and I literally prayed to God that if I lived, I'd never sail again. It was that scary. I love LOOKING at the ocean...that's it
Well covered. I like u make the statement of where you got the money to make the trip. Non boaters with envy don’t realise how many hours of labour go on to a boat even if it’s in top condition. They all want to go out on it but would never help to clean paint scrape mop dust and all the rest. Have fun all the best to you boat buddy 👍👍👍
I believe it's naive to believe that the majority of the owners of such boats don't pay some poor slob to do it because they have so much money and it's peanuts to them.
I agree but the poor slob would be a very capable marine engineer who charges a fortune for their skill. If you are not a check book captain it takes real graft and time and personal skill to do anything. Even cleaning of a boat this size could take days or weeks. 👍👍👍
Loved your entire video series, both entertaining and informative. Some great photography too. You two should be very proud of yourselves, quite an accomplishment for two young guys. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure.
Great job. Don’t ever listen to those who make stupid comments about how you were able to pay for this. Most who speak like that have no idea and just want to try and take away your credit for working hard and accomplishing something few of them will ever be able too. I don’t know what your prior boating experience was but you did this with a level head by teaching yourself how to do so much of the maintenance. You also paid attention to the important details when prepping your boat for this long journey. I totally admire that you had a vision and a goal and went after it. You have a adventure that will last a lifetime. I’ve been boating and a live aboard for over 30 years and love it. I hope your passion is only greater for boating adventures now that you’ve done this. Bahamas trip or even the Great Loop may be a interest to you in the future. You actually have a great boat for long range cruising. I really enjoy your videos. Hope to see more adventures in the future. Wish you fair weather and calm seas !
Great job helps with a mechanical background and balls of steel, liked the video. As of being a retired mechanic and boat guy thank you parents for raising a good man.be safe and wind at your back.Big Lou
Great job young man. I have different numbers and experiences going up and down the coast but have enormous respect your resourcefulness and natural engineering talents.Keep up the great videos and adventures
Gus you did it with class man! You kept it real no BS, and had fun doing it. I applauded you ! I'm thinking of doing that, once I get my budget in order, and try to do the same, I've always seen, and enjoy being out on a boat, my dream is to go out an fish for tuna, and support myself in just fishing an selling tuna, maybe some salmon as well, but would have to get the boat first and foremost! And of course enjoy life out there as well. I know it's not going to be easy, but like you said, just do it, at least either you make it or not , at least you achieve the goal you always wanted to do! And with that said, good luck and God Bless you threw all of your journey's, you are an inspiration for most of us, with a dream come true. Godspeed!
Buddy.. I have myself a 53 year old Italien motor Yacht, twin Detroits on it And you are a smart and inspiring young man!! I liked all your videos.. And YES if you educate yourself you can fix nearly every problem on your ship! Best regards from the city of Prague/CZ (ship is in Italy!)

I was having a discussion at work about how much it would cost to take a boat from Maine to Florida, this video is one of the videos that came up, I’m so happy I found it. I’ve been watching all your videos. I find them awesome and very entertaining. I didn’t go from Maine to Florida on a boat but when I was in my 20s, But I traveled all over the world every place I’ve ever wanted to go, I did it on the cheap, sometimes I camped out in places like when I went to Hawaii would visit the resorts during the day and camp out at night, you have to live life and you never know when it will end so you have to do it sooner than later, when you get older, your body can’t keep up with you so it’s awesome You’re doing this now. Your videos are very entertaining. I love Them so keep them coming.!!!
There is hope for the USA! Great presentation by a thorough young man. You used your head to $ave money on the boat- and the trip. I can certainly live with 8 knots. Good job.
You've done an excellent job documenting your travels the ICW on a trawler. We've enjoyed the whole series & appreciate the trouble you went through with taking the time to record & edit it. We have an Albin 40 trawler that is currently south of St Augustine but we'll be starting our trip back north April 8th where we mostly anchor out like you guys did. I hope to see you on the water & we'll be keeping an eye out for you! PS I hope you caught that rat thats on your boat @ 4:20! 😃
Yes - we did something similar with our 1993 Carver. Before retirement, my husband was a mechanical engineer, and before that a mechanic. Today, instead of going to Florida, we ply Canada's canals. You did a beautiful job your boat! Congrats!
That's the magic bullet man, you do your own labour and you do it competently. That's how I do it with my apartments!!!! Way2go I'm proud of you and only a few of us know about this little trick in life..
Wow! Got to have a good job to run that boat. Certainly is a dream smasher. In my growing years my dad took us out on our boat with every spare minute he had. Sometimes we would be gone a couple of weeks. Cheap back then, nothing was built up just raw nature and nearly no laws. Sure miss those days. Blessings to you and your boat.
Dude! That was epic!! That was the best cost breakdown I've ever seen on youtube! That idiot facebooker trawler self grandizing, narcissist that kicked you out of his group was an idiot! This alone is great content for any trawling or boating group on facebook or anywhere else! It could be so easy to hate on you because of jealousy but you have been honorable, respectful and informative as well as entertaining, so good on you! You are wise beyond your years. Thanks for taking us along on this great journey!! Oh yeah, one more thing, your beer budget, we need to work on that! 🤣🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍻
Who is the person you refer- want to make sure I unsubscribe if I’m following because i agree - this is a superb video and truly inspiring. Well done, young man!
I compared my 3 months adventure cruising the ICW with the cost of my friends 2 week cruise on a ship. My friends cruise was twice my expenditure - and I still had a sailboat at the end!
Love your videos. My late wife and I loved boating when we lived in N. California. We started out with a 1978 28' Chris Craft Catalina. Took about 3 years of off and on refurbishing. We honeymooned on her. Then we bought a 1980 34' full displacement Ka Shing trawler. She had a single Lehman 6 cylinder diesel. Great boat. Finally we bought a 40' Semi displacement trawler. She had twin 210 Cummins. Loved that boat she could turn on a dime with those twins! A few years into that one turned out to be our last when my wife passed with cancer. I'm in Florida now and even though I'm 73 I still miss the boating life. Where the heck did you find this nice boat for $25,000??? Great deal.
You could have "Hopped on a bus Gus" but you didn't. We all dream of an adventure like this while we are young but we dont have the time or money then we get to old to fulfill this dream. You did it ! I can only imagine what a fun adventure this was.
How refreshing to have stumbled upon your video! I had to laugh at your question "how does this 23 year old kid do this?". I'm a retired 72 yr. old carpenter, widower with 2 kids and 5 grandchildren - all in their twenties. I was married at 18, father at 20, home owner at 22, father again at 23 (son this time). Had all the toys along the way - snowmobiles, sailboats, Harley. Your absolutely right when you say "with hard work . it's possible for anyone". Keep up this up and your life will be the great adventure mine has been.
Hi Gus, I discovered your channel by chance (thanks to the RUclips algorithm) and I watched all your videos. That was a great and fun journey along the coast, going thru places I will probably never see with my own eyes. Thank you for that. Also thank you for this last video about costs. That will sure be a great help for all the people who are intending to do the same trip. I hope you won't stop publishing videos from time to time, even if your journey has come to an end for now. Cheers from France.
I have liked and subscribed. This was a very valuable video. I realize that expenses have gone up in the past year, but the information presented is still valuable. I like that your experiences are relatable and your positive attitude makes a trip like this seem less daunting. Thank you for this channel and for sharing your adventures.
Very cool Great info Great video Most people manage to make folks dislike them I found this easy to watch, honest and informative Very likable and most likely you will have many followers…. I use to watch (back to basics) then it turned to (Strick and Fran) I recommend watching them if they are still around
yes it can be done, my friend circumnavigated on his 40'cutter and used about 45 US gallons for the whole trip. motor sailing i watched your vids on that 70'boat you brought. you mentioned the cost of a pump, I knew instantly your pockets were mot deep. beers on me if we meet/ happy sailing, Waza Australia, thanks a greatly needed video!
Good Job man! Most of the people think that having a trawler is too expensive. If you have a sailboat and you like marinas, it will cost a lot more than that to make the same trip.
OUTSTANDING SERIES. I watched every video the moment you posted them. Thank you for sharing your trip. I am totally jealous. What a great life experience that you will never forget. And at the end of it all you still own a very nice boat that you know everything about. Well done!
My Comrade whom is retired business man purchased a 81 foot boat first year his family loved it , then after it just stayed moored in San Diego , California for a few years he sold it and then sold all of his hotels in California and Texas and only has 1 hotel now after his wife got sick of the hotel biz . I look at boats but never get on them and the only time I did was in Venice Florida as it was agreed the boat would be in sight of land and only in the day time I did that once and that was enough for me of the boat life.
That's excellent info. You made me fall in love with your Hatteras so I'll assume $50k is comfortable. My friends and I all love my cooking so I dont see partying outside of the boat, and we're wine drinks so wine ob board is the way to go compared to paying at the bar Thanks. Your folks are super proud,Im sure.
I've never even clicked a boat anything anywhere, so I don't know why this was suggested. But I'm glad it was. EXCELLENT vlog in every way, shape and form!! I'm sure you're going to have a GREAT life! Again, EXCELLENT!!
Well done, brother! You and Adam will have this trip as a lifetime memory. I have enjoyed watching each episode and appreciate the detail you provide - along with being yourself and "keeping it real"! I have no doubt you will do well in whatever you want to do, in life. Thanks again for such a great series of videos!
Damn, thanks for this. It's definitely eye opening as to real like cost for a trip like this. I may have to stick to road trips down the east Coast for now. Or at least a much smaller boat. Mabey one day I hope
A smaller boat will be Much Much cheaper!.....You can find nice Used boats around $10k all day depending on where you live.....I personally prefer a boat around 24ft, Outboard motor because it's Easy to service and if your prop gets tangled in weeds, you can easily clear it! Parts are cheap too......Inboards are nice, but service is a nightmare and expensive in my experience.
Hi Gus, thank you for following through with what you promised on the boat cost and trip expenses. You're a fine young man and very smart too. Unfortunately at the moment gas prices have gone through the roof, but they're bound to come down again someday
The guy is very methodical. Every evening at home for six months he had his calculator in his hand at the kitchen table. He went over and over everything. When I was living in San Diego and teaching flying, I was planning to bicycle trip to Fiji, New Zealand and bicycled across the continent of Australia twice. I didn't have a $3,500 dollar mortgage payment. I didn't have a $500,00 a month F-150 truck payment sitting in the driveway, plus a 72 in. T.V., didn't drive to the airport, I rode my bike. Put the bike in the hanger and went to work. This kid is sharp, really sharp. This is the kind of guy we need in charge of the Treasury department.
For not seeing behind the scenes you really nailed it! I did my best to figure it all out before I bought the boat. Things do pop up but being prepared is what made this possible for me.
Thank you Gus! I thoroughly enjoyed your journey. I was born and raised at the west end of the cape cod canal. I am currently on my 2nd season living full time on a 88 Slickcraft 310SC. I want a down east style aft cabin vessel like you have. The difference between you and I is mechanical ability. You have given me so much incentive to chace my dream. I'm only 36. I'm very knowledgeable in boat handling. I hope you keep you page alive even though you have met your goal. I'd love to put my name in the hat for crew if/when you wanted to run your Albin home. I can't express enough what your journey meant to me
Brilliant idea changing the background during what otherwise would be a talking head. I think it worked really well. Nice boat by the way, and the grey kitten is adorable. I wish I had done this when I was your age.
I enjoy walking the cape cod canal and watching boats going from Florida to Maine. There are strict speed limits. 10mph with wake limit. It’s strictly enforced so it makes for an entertaining stroll
Gus, Great video. I just purchased a 29' Prairie Trawler in Florida which I intend on living on in North Carolina. You detailed list of expenses is the best one I have seen yet! It will help me greatly in planning....so thank you so much! I know my boat is slower being full displacement and a single diesel engine. Coincidently, my cruise speed is about the same at 8 Knots however I only burn 1 gph at that speed. I plan on spending lots of time on the hook since I have a generator and a/c. I've really enjoyed your whole trip which I watched from start to finish! Great Job!!!!
I’m in the process of buying a 31’ Chris Craft to live aboard in NC. I’ll be diving most likely in New Bern NC or Washington, but will be in morehead and surrounding areas a lot. We should connect 👍🏾
Great series! I loved watching the editing and videography evolve as it went along. My wife and I have been looking for a Florida boat to spend time cruising the Keys while escaping part of our ND winter. You’ve inspired me to look at boats in the NE that we could sail down to start the adventure.
HI, Alan Cecil here..Graduated from NDSU in 1968. We live in Maryland. Our boat, SIGMACHI, is kept on Nabbs Creek, near Baltimore, Chesapeake Bay Country. Had to write when I saw you were a Nodak! 12:22
Great stuff Tony, i have a silverton aft cabin 372.... I didn't catch your time line for the trip... i would be going from NJ to west palm.... thanks again.... Vince
I've done almost the same thing twice. Once with a 1968, 37' Pembroke that I got for $10.00 ( and no that's not a typo, and yes it was floating in a slip, not sitting on the bottom. The owner would show up about every 4 years and get PO because it would not start. I spent well over $10,000 replacing everything and rebuilding the Vee drives and twin 327 gas engines. I took it from Gwynns Island VA to Titusville FL and back and it sunk at the slip in hurricane Isabel a year later in VA. The second boat was a 40' one off Rhodes sailboat I got for free at a boat yard because a strap had broken on a travel lift and when it dropped it busted the stern out. All the tack, sails and even the mast was missing. I got lucky and found the mast in a barn, and also found a lady whos husband had pasted away that was trying to build his own sailboat and she trying to sell all the tack he had bought and never installed for penny's on the dollar. It took years to restore but, I did make the trip to FL one time and sold it to a retired Rear Admiral for $75,000 years later.
I like the fact that even though you can run economically at trawler speeds in an emergency (out of adult beverage, medical issue etc) you can run at near plaining speeds.
I noticed on the pontoon that at 8 miles an hour you might burn 2 gallons per hour, 12 miles an hour you’re not going much faster and it burns 5 gallons per hour. Wide-open throttle might get you to 14 miles an hour, but because of cavitation and everything you can burn up 10 gallons in an hour like that for nothing. So unless there is major wind to overcome putting around like 4 to 6 mph under half throttle burns about a gallon per hour you can make a lot cheaper trip without trying to rush. It’s not as loud not as hard on the boat doesn’t make as much weight and way more efficient. I know it’s a pontoon so cavitation and wind all that are different but it definitely showed me that faster is not better and unlike a car 60 miles an hour on the water is late dumping buckets of gasoline out
Thanks for sharing all of your videos. What kind of work did you do? Just curious.

That was YOUR trip man. No one else will ever be able to do like YOU. Keep pushing 🙌💪🏻💪🏻
Well done young man! I'm so proud of you and your accomplishments! I'm glad that you decided to share the cost with your viewers!
It also depends on what speed you want to push the yacht If you keep it around 6 to 8 knobs you'll probably get a very good economical fuel burn if you floor the throttles or or push it to 10 to 12 knots you'll probably get me refilling every 2 days
Another huge variable is boat size, speed will effect MPG a lot but a boat half the size going twice as fast is usually gonna get a similar mpg.
Great videos Gus, I enjoy them all, your parents must be very proud of you, enjoy your voyage and stay safe.
It's necessary to keep track of all finances but at the end of the day there are some things you just can't put a price on personal freedom is priceless your living the life. Thank for sharing it Gus 👍
LOL... that was his kitten!
This video is a breath of fresh air compared to the awfulness that is typically on YT these days. Great trip.
My wife and I really enjoyed your videos. Brought back many memories.
Yes - we did something similar with our 1993 Carver. Before retirement, my husband was a mechanical engineer, and before that a mechanic. Today, instead of going to Florida, we ply Canada's canals. You did a beautiful job your boat! Congrats!
Its great to see a young man living life to the fullest and chasing your dreams 👍👍✌️
That's the magic bullet man, you do your own labour and you do it competently. That's how I do it with my apartments!!!! Way2go I'm proud of you and only a few of us know about this little trick in life..
Thank you for braking it down to us all. Its something my wife and i have been talking about alot the past week
Really cool video for someone somewhat interested in boating/sailing and no experience. Thank you.
I was thinking the same thing concerning that beer budget....That needs a larger slice of the pie...heh perhaps slow to 7 knots. 🙂
Who is the person you refer- want to make sure I unsubscribe if I’m following because i agree - this is a superb video and truly inspiring. Well done, young man!
That’s a lot of skill for such a young man, I am betting military, based on watching you, excellent job !!
Wow, when I see a young bloke like this, I am reassured about our future. What a nice young fella.
Cheers and thanks for sharing......... new sub.
You are on your game, perfect! Same deal on your new Broward. You are miles ahead of the "totally financed" dummies. Enjoy!
The gang buys a boat is a true story
How refreshing to have stumbled upon your video! I had to laugh at your question "how does this 23 year old kid do this?". I'm a retired 72 yr. old carpenter, widower with 2 kids and 5 grandchildren - all in their twenties. I was married at 18, father at 20, home owner at 22, father again at 23 (son this time). Had all the toys along the way - snowmobiles, sailboats, Harley. Your absolutely right when you say "with hard work . it's possible for anyone". Keep up this up and your life will be the great adventure mine has been.
23 yr old kid ,rest of the world considers you a grown man . Enjoyed your vid .
Dude, love the way this was presented, thank you for sharing!
Very cool
Great info Great video
Most people manage to make folks dislike them
I found this easy to watch, honest and informative
Very likable and most likely you will have many followers….
Well done!
Amazing. I hope your channel gets the appreciation it deserves!
Congratulations on your adventure! Looking forward to hearing what comes next in your life. You are an incredible young man.
Excellent video. I think your presentation was very thorough and concisely written. Great job! I will watch more of your videos.
Thk u, very informative. Located in Jamaica & looking to purchase my first Sports fishing boat. Videos like these really help a lot. Thks again!
Beer was 1/4 the total of the groceries, awesome :) fantastic trip and supremely useful summary of costs and things to think about, thanks very much!
Being that I have owned boats up to 26ft in the CA Delta I would agree with you on all your figures. Very realistic. Great video's Gus.
I like in your editing how you have 3 different locations splitting up one sentence. Really cool
Bravo sir, live your life like this till your last breath and you win.
I truly love how raw these videos are thank you Gus!
Becoming old I am amazed how vivid memories are....Your adventures are PRICELESS!!!!you'll treasure memories of every moment
Don't hold your breath.
One of the best videos of the journey. Would love to see others.
I can't express enough what your journey meant to me
Bad Lary. Standing by. 9. 13. 16
Outstanding shipmates. Press on. USS Kitty Hawk CV-63. Jan 1980 to July 1983. Boater for life.
I watched them all. Great series. You'll remember this the rest of your life. Hydro southern Maine
Ur videos are my fav Gus, keep up the hard work and safe travels out there buddy.
Subscribed, liked - Mad Respect for the straight up cost break down - my Inner staff accountant is gleeful.
Good for you bro....that trip will be a highlite in your life...great memories when you get old....forget the nay sayers....
This is really cool - you have already accomplished one of my bucket list items, and I am 55!!! Good job!
Vince
Cost=priceless memories and experiences!👍🏻✌🏻
Great video. You packed a lot of valuable information in just over 12 minutes. Thanks
Thanks for taking us on your amazing journey. It was fun going along David
A great breakdown of expenses.
I'm hoping to get a boat in the next year or two, and I'm getting anxious.
Hell yeah dude!! This is some prime content!!
Super nice boat! Thank you for sharing, bro! And keep boating/rocking! Cheers from sunny Puerto Rico!
Thanks for the trip dude. Methinks you're going to have some great adventures in your life.
I like the fact that even though you can run economically at trawler speeds in an emergency (out of adult beverage, medical issue etc) you can run at near plaining speeds.
Exactly! Its nice to be able to run fast if need be!
That's cool... I drove my Chevy truck from Maine to Florida it cost me 378$ for gas...
Good Video-obviously a very sensible guy-and good on you for using your anchor
Glad you shared the cost, now let’s see the Walmart paint job on your stang.
Very informative video, I’ve always wondered about the fuel costs. Ignore the haters, they’re just jealous.
