- In this video, I do an in depth cost analysis down to the dollar, of how much it cost me to buy a boat (Twin Diesel Trawler), with no prior experience, and to run this boat down the East Coast USA from Portland Maine, to Miami, Florida! If you are new to the channel, check out my boat trip series, of the entire trip down the coast!

Thanks for sharing all of your videos. What kind of work did you do? Just curious.
I had an auto shop in NH prior to this trip. Thanks for watching!
Not collage "educated" he worked with brain and hands
@@earlwright9715 It was a valid question. Had he not had an auto shop, would he have really taken on the engine oriented tasks??? I doubt it. The skills he learned from tearing cars apart were directly applicable to getting his boat handled.
@christerman if he owned an auto shop on his own money he wouldn't have paid 25k for a boat that's worth 20k if it doesn't need 12k in repairs. Dudes a liar, I don't understand what I did to the youtube algorithm to keep getting sent this garbage

So awful that you forced yourself to sit and watch the WHOLE VIDEO!! 😂
I am a 73 year old retiree that has enjoyed your experience with pride and envy. There are people who plan for this their entire life to go through the ICW. You are showing it can be done safely and have a great time doing it. My hats off to you and your partner. Keep posting!
I’m thinking sailing is a lot cheaper with the price of gas
Been there done it. There are LONG stretches where best to take Ocean vs. ICW for example, NJ to Virginia.
@@gcanada3005 Yeah but so many times wind is either lacking or blowing from wrong direction so the stick boat better have a good diesel.
I hate people who think retiring is okay, go donate your time to society.
@@420.........I hate people who make ignorant and rude comments online, why don’t they spend all their time actually helping people instead of watching RUclips and trolling the internet!!! 😂
I loved watching this whole trip. You and Adam will never forget it. I felt sad watching him leave. Here is what I liked so much:
1. Your positive attitude. No complaining and whining and being dramatic. Just two real guys having fun. It was funny when you were in the Chesapeake bay you said something like " it sucks here" But you quickly caught yourself being negative and said " just kidding , its nice" LOL
2. At the end of the day you would show on a map how you went.
3. The drone footage was a nice touch and added to your production.
4. You talked like a normal person, not a put on phoney personality
5. Even though your a sailor, you didnt talk like one. Meaning you didnt curse the whole time. I appreciate that . I could watch this with my family.
Thanks for being transparent with the costs , it answered a lot of my questions
And BTW it was very obvious to me from the beginning that you are a hard worker and not getting handouts. Great Job!!
I really liked the video I'm impressed that a 23 year old young man has his head on straight like you do. I'm 61 years old and finally sold our last boat it was a 36 ft trawler with twin Perkins diesels. They are very good on fuel and very sea worthy vessels. Before that one we had a 31 ft uniflite with twin Chrysler 318 small blocks gas engines that really sucked up the fuel I was glad to get diesels The fuel economy is way better and the engines last much much longer. Good job I'm impressed with this video.
Great videos Gus, I enjoy them all, your parents must be very proud of you, enjoy your voyage and stay safe.
I love how detailed you are and how responsible you seem when doing this journey. Very impressed. Good job dude.
Well done young man! I'm so proud of you and your accomplishments! I'm glad that you decided to share the cost with your viewers!
Dude, love the way this was presented, thank you for sharing!
You absolutely rocked this video!! Way to live your dream, you lived more by having this expierence than most folks ever will their entire lives. Well done friend, well done indeed!!
Great job young man. I have different numbers and experiences going up and down the coast but have enormous respect your resourcefulness and natural engineering talents.Keep up the great videos and adventures
Really cool video for someone somewhat interested in boating/sailing and no experience. Thank you.
Loved your entire video series, both entertaining and informative. Some great photography too. You two should be very proud of yourselves, quite an accomplishment for two young guys. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure.
My wife and I really enjoyed your videos. Brought back many memories.
I love the way you broke everything down, it’s nice to hear it in plain language
Dude! That was super informative!! Thank you!!
One of the best videos of the journey. Would love to see others.
Awesome Gus! 🤯 You did it!
Great breakdown of the costs. Your TALENTS as a mechanic 🛠 and as an electrician🪛...and your COURAGE to CREATE opportunities will serve you well. 👏
Old guy approved! 😎 👍
Great informative video. Thank you for sharing and being so open with your expenses!
That is still a HUGE amount of money to just buy a boat and get to Florida.
Last year I bought a 34' Steel hull sailboat for $12,000. Put $5000 and 4 weeks labor into a refit.
Sailed from Lake Ontario thru the Erie Canal system to NYC. Cost $450 to take mast down and $400 to put back up. Spent $115 in diesel thru canal system at avg 4-5 knots. Then from NYC to Key Largo spent $210 in diesel when using the ICW in bad weather. Slept on board all but 3 nights, $380 in hotel rooms that had Jacuzzi tubs to " feel good "
Spent $400 in groceries and $500 in beer for 2ppl. $120 in dog food. Moored 7 times at marinas to take advantage of electricity to do maintenance
$400 there. Ate a ton of fish including 1 Bluefin Tuna that weighed in at 91 pounds. Shared that meat with a handful of cruisers in South Carolina who will never forget me. So ya sailing vessels are much cheaper to operate and much more fun on the open water AND can handle much bigger waves/weather. IF anyone does buy a Trawler, and yes I love me a Trawler, but, it's gotta be Diesel and full keel type to handle offshore weather. I plan on retiring into a 45-55ft Trawler when to old to sail.
Well thats my 2 cents on a Cruiser Lifestyle. But i'd say BOTH our points are similar ,,,, ANYONE can do this and live the lifestyle. Then learn to create RUclips videos and make an extra couple grand a month to keep on going into the Wild Blue Yonder !!
Peace Out & Fair Winds to All !!!

Excellent advice
I have liked and subscribed. This was a very valuable video. I realize that expenses have gone up in the past year, but the information presented is still valuable. I like that your experiences are relatable and your positive attitude makes a trip like this seem less daunting. Thank you for this channel and for sharing your adventures.
Outstanding. As a guy who’s first job out of college was working at a marina on winnipsaukee, and still boating around mass, with the hope of doing what you’re doing, I really appreciate this summary. You’re killing it. Greta job.
Loved your video - absolutely to the point amazing info and outstanding and very professional video thank you 🙏
Ur videos are my fav Gus, keep up the hard work and safe travels out there buddy.
Awesome videos !
I'm older and getting ready to retire and this has sparked an idea for me , I'm ready to take on a project thanks to your inspiration, I've been restoring and flipping cars trucks bikes and boats since I was 13 thanks to the help of my grandfather (Rip)
He was my biggest inspiration and he said never quit !
Keep up the good work !
Go for it!
Excellent video. I think your presentation was very thorough and concisely written. Great job! I will watch more of your videos.
Very nice, I enjoyed your video & learned so much!!! Thanks!
You are a formidable young man, and 23 years old I tip my hat to you. As they say don’t put off today till tomorrow because you won’t know what you’ve missed when you get old. Bravo young man. Keep the RUclips clips coming
Great video. You packed a lot of valuable information in just over 12 minutes. Thanks
Gus you did it with class man! You kept it real no BS, and had fun doing it. I applauded you ! I'm thinking of doing that, once I get my budget in order, and try to do the same, I've always seen, and enjoy being out on a boat, my dream is to go out an fish for tuna, and support myself in just fishing an selling tuna, maybe some salmon as well, but would have to get the boat first and foremost! And of course enjoy life out there as well. I know it's not going to be easy, but like you said, just do it, at least either you make it or not , at least you achieve the goal you always wanted to do! And with that said, good luck and God Bless you threw all of your journey's, you are an inspiration for most of us, with a dream come true. Godspeed!
It also depends on what speed you want to push the yacht If you keep it around 6 to 8 knobs you'll probably get a very good economical fuel burn if you floor the throttles or or push it to 10 to 12 knots you'll probably get me refilling every 2 days
Another huge variable is boat size, speed will effect MPG a lot but a boat half the size going twice as fast is usually gonna get a similar mpg.
Very informative video, thank you for sharing, much appreciated.
Keep up the fun and good work!
Great explanation. Great job.
Its great to see a young man living life to the fullest and chasing your dreams 👍👍✌️
Amazing. I hope your channel gets the appreciation it deserves!
Excellent video with great information.
legend, first video i found. I'll start to check out the rest...cheers for sharing
Thanks for all the information.
That was YOUR trip man. No one else will ever be able to do like YOU. Keep pushing 🙌💪🏻💪🏻
Excellent information. Thank you.
Well done. Outstanding!
Great job helps with a mechanical background and balls of steel, liked the video. As of being a retired mechanic and boat guy thank you parents for raising a good man.be safe and wind at your back.Big Lou
Very informative. And good for you.
Good energy my man! Keep it 100
Man you are living the dream, keep it up!
Well done, brother!
You and Adam will have this trip as a lifetime memory. I have enjoyed watching each episode and appreciate the detail you provide - along with being yourself and "keeping it real"!
I have no doubt you will do well in whatever you want to do, in life.
Thanks again for such a great series of videos!
You've done an excellent job documenting your travels the ICW on a trawler. We've enjoyed the whole series & appreciate the trouble you went through with taking the time to record & edit it. We have an Albin 40 trawler that is currently south of St Augustine but we'll be starting our trip back north April 8th where we mostly anchor out like you guys did. I hope to see you on the water & we'll be keeping an eye out for you!
PS I hope you caught that rat thats on your boat @ 4:20! 😃
LOL... that was his kitten!
There is hope for the USA! Great presentation by a thorough young man. You used your head to $ave money on the boat- and the trip. I can certainly live with 8 knots. Good job.
Thk u, very informative. Located in Jamaica & looking to purchase my first Sports fishing boat. Videos like these really help a lot. Thks again!
Well presented ..concice and to the point !!! big thumbs up
Forget the trip! I'm amazed that you did all the work yourself. I was a passenger aboard a 35 foot ship visiting the Greek isles. We had a bad storm and I literally prayed to God that if I lived, I'd never sail again. It was that scary. I love LOOKING at the ocean...that's it
Great concise presentation 😊
Subscribed, liked - Mad Respect for the straight up cost break down - my Inner staff accountant is gleeful.
Great vid. I just came across yours. I love watching boat rebuild vids......Thanks alot now im going to have to binge watch yours. : )
Super nice boat! Thank you for sharing, bro! And keep boating/rocking! Cheers from sunny Puerto Rico!
Great video! Great trip!
Such great information Gus!! Loved following your trip! Thanks for taking us along! I caught your video's from the very beginning and have followed along ever since. Hope you keep on videotaping. It was so informative about your docking and anchoring. I would have had no idea! The cost of docking in NYC, wowza! See? That alone is excellent info! Keep on boating!
Very good job. Smart, responsible, entertaining. Thanks.
Really cool and great information
Good Video-obviously a very sensible guy-and good on you for using your anchor
I've never even clicked a boat anything anywhere, so I don't know why this was suggested. But I'm glad it was. EXCELLENT vlog in every way, shape and form!!
I'm sure you're going to have a GREAT life! Again, EXCELLENT!!
This is really cool - you have already accomplished one of my bucket list items, and I am 55!!! Good job!
Thanks for the video - I always wondered the cost of such an adventure.
I truly love how raw these videos are thank you Gus!
Congratulations on your adventure! Looking forward to hearing what comes next in your life. You are an incredible young man.
Excellent presentation, thanks.
Wow! Got to have a good job to run that boat. Certainly is a dream smasher. In my growing years my dad took us out on our boat with every spare minute he had. Sometimes we would be gone a couple of weeks. Cheap back then, nothing was built up just raw nature and nearly no laws. Sure miss those days. Blessings to you and your boat.
It's necessary to keep track of all finances but at the end of the day there are some things you just can't put a price on personal freedom is priceless your living the life. Thank for sharing it Gus 👍
Glad I found this channel, way to go.
Congratulations 🎉 you be proud of yourself brother
Thank you buddy....excellent job, keep it up plzzz.
Excellent information thank you
Great vid bro👊
Wow, when I see a young bloke like this, I am reassured about our future. What a nice young fella.
Cheers and thanks for sharing......... new sub.
Well done young man !! You give me faith that our countries"s future has more young people have like you to take care care of country.
A great breakdown of expenses.
I'm hoping to get a boat in the next year or two, and I'm getting anxious.
Excellent job my friend !!
Great video great trip. Thank you.
Great videos and thanks for the adventure. Hope to catch up in Fla soon!!!!
Being that I have owned boats up to 26ft in the CA Delta I would agree with you on all your figures. Very realistic. Great video's Gus.
That's the magic bullet man, you do your own labour and you do it competently. That's how I do it with my apartments!!!! Way2go I'm proud of you and only a few of us know about this little trick in life..
Gus! Good job young man!! This is a dream of mine as well. Thanks for sharing your experience. Skills will set you apart from the norms. You are in another world! I am very happy for you! Keep floating! Enjoy your boat! Nothing makes a man feel like a man more than, not just building, but taking something from its death bed and bringing it back. Short horror story: About 15 years ago my wife seen some ladies sunbathing on a boat and said I want to do that. So, I purchased a Chrysler 22 sailboat. Like yours it needed love. I worked hard on it. Brought it back. Rebuilt the trailer too. Bought a 10 foot inflatable island for sunbathing to go with it. I was on my very last step. Mounting the outboard engine mount. My wife calls and says,"I'm not getting on that boat." She said I spent too much time on the boat, even though I was doing it for her as well. It never made it to the water. I walked away. Broke my heart. It's been sitting ever since. I recently gave it to my son in hopes he will bring it back one more time. Now she wants a motor boat. Here we go again!! LOL!! To pull her back in, I just watch boating videos when she is around....LIKE YOURS!! SO thank you my friend! You helped!! Hopes to see you on the water!!
Great video. When you work hard you get rewarded great job. 👍
Brilliant idea changing the background during what otherwise would be a talking head. I think it worked really well. Nice boat by the way, and the grey kitten is adorable. I wish I had done this when I was your age.
Congrats on great video series. Keep them coming.
Bravo sir, live your life like this till your last breath and you win.
....ran across your video as i have been researching travel from Charleston SC to Key West Florida via ICW....uour video gives me à good idea of costs...thanks....
Dang good video, thanks for sharing ✅💥✌️
Awesome info!
Your living the life bro. I would love to experience boating the east coast. Loved the video.
This is just what I was looking for
I like in your editing how you have 3 different locations splitting up one sentence. Really cool
Well covered. I like u make the statement of where you got the money to make the trip. Non boaters with envy don’t realise how many hours of labour go on to a boat even if it’s in top condition. They all want to go out on it but would never help to clean paint scrape mop dust and all the rest. Have fun all the best to you boat buddy 👍👍👍
I believe it's naive to believe that the majority of the owners of such boats don't pay some poor slob to do it because they have so much money and it's peanuts to them.
I agree but the poor slob would be a very capable marine engineer who charges a fortune for their skill. If you are not a check book captain it takes real graft and time and personal skill to do anything. Even cleaning of a boat this size could take days or weeks. 👍👍👍
Yes - we did something similar with our 1993 Carver. Before retirement, my husband was a mechanical engineer, and before that a mechanic. Today, instead of going to Florida, we ply Canada's canals. You did a beautiful job your boat! Congrats!
Great series! I loved watching the editing and videography evolve as it went along. My wife and I have been looking for a Florida boat to spend time cruising the Keys while escaping part of our ND winter. You’ve inspired me to look at boats in the NE that we could sail down to start the adventure.
HI, Alan Cecil here..Graduated from NDSU in 1968. We live in Maryland. Our boat, SIGMACHI, is kept on Nabbs Creek, near Baltimore, Chesapeake Bay Country.
Had to write when I saw you were a Nodak! 12:22
Thank you! Some day I would love to live on a trawler. Already live in FL, would like to just jump across to the Bahamas from time to time. I look forward to more! God bless!
That’s a lot of skill for such a young man, I am betting military, based on watching you, excellent job !!
Beer was 1/4 the total of the groceries, awesome :) fantastic trip and supremely useful summary of costs and things to think about, thanks very much!
Great stuff Tony, i have a silverton aft cabin 372.... I didn't catch your time line for the trip... i would be going from NJ to west palm.... thanks again.... Vince
Great video 👏👏👏
