This was hands down the greatest experience I've had in all of World of Warcraft. As part of a social 5 man guild that just about got ZG done by the end, this was our end game content. The Baron 45 run was infamous and they even tried to recreate it in Shattered Halls.

Me and buddies did it back in classic cause we didn't like 40 man raids. There was about 7 of us that committed ourselves to the quest. It was an amazing adventure and took us probably close to 3 months to complete because we all backtracked to help each other. The bonds that we formed lasted for years until we all realized everything after litch king sucked, still in contact with 2 of the guys. Defenitly my fondest memory of wow, nothing comes close. I would never do it again lol! I very much regret selling off the set when bc launched😧

  • @dave9309
    @dave9309 5 лет назад +7

Although I've been playing WoW since the day BC launched, I had no idea this quest chain existed. Once classic drops I'm unlikely to be a serious raider due to time constraints, so knowing I can get a set like this has been really helpful, thank you.

The hardest thing with these bosses in this chain was that noone, and I mean NOONE else but you had any knowledge of what was going on or what the mechanics was. So it was a big part of the quest to gather a proper crew with the skills and intelligence to absorb your explanation of the fight and actually execute on the laid out plan.

    • @51gunner
      @51gunner 4 года назад +1

For sure. I remember the final bossfight in UBRS - a damned hard 3-phase fight that basically nobody is familiar with and even trying to find info about it was a friggin' challenge. Then he wipes you out and half your group isn't even clear why they're fighting this boss...

ran into gnome mage with the brazier, not sure how we met or what sparked our conversation, but it went something like this,i think i was questing in kalimdor, and a mage whispered me,and iwas on a low level alt,he took me to dire maul, and we summoned isalien(it took a few tries, but he insisted that we didn't leave until i got the piece of loot i could use),at the the time i had no idea how rare this encounter was or how people still had the brazier after the cata changes, note that this was from the perspective of a player that started late in tbc,so i had vague idea that these types of bosses and loots were leftovers from a old quest, but this video came full circle and it clicked all together, thank you for sharing this video it means more to me than you know.( i really wish i remembered that gnomes name they were a really nice person,it almost felt like a nostalgic adventure killing isalien after all these years)

Hey I got another recommendation for an episode. You can do one about some of the long quest chains in vanilla, the ones that sent you all over the world (Not attunement/weapons/event related).
Like the quest chain for the Blasted Lands elite demon boss (A really epic quest, don't see those in WoW anymore), the alliance quest chain to find out about the missing king, the quest chain with Tirion Fording, and many more.

That being said great video! Stumbling across this channel has been a great experience!

What an absurd quest chain! My eyes glaze over just listening to this. Obviously this is the first thing I have to do in classic, even if I do nothing else. I got the first two parts of this on my mage originally, but never the last part. It was mega expensive and super confusing at the same time. Not my favorite combination of things for something to be at the time obviously, and I just gave up. Will definitely be returning to this particular video shortly.
I remember the runaround from the stupid goblin very well though, so I definitely got that far into this craziness. I basically said exactly what you said in this video "You couldn't have told me about this when I was leaving to get the ash earlier!?!" What an ashhole is just right.

I think what made special these quests is that they made you travel from one corner of a continent to the opposite corner of the opposite continent, expend time and effort there (like a campaign, with it's own adventures) and feel some kind of relief once you were able to come back "home". Traveling was difficult back then (at least harder), so you were very likely to meet new people while doing so. Also, getting to the new place and getting whatever you were sent to find wasn't that easy, because as we can see in your video, once you get there, you're asked to do multiple tasks before getting whatever you were sent to find in the first place.

In WoW Classic, which I still love and play nearly every day, I completed the grind for my rogue Tire 0.5 set. Yes, it was challenging, but it was a great feeling to finally complete and turn in the last quest for my helm and chest pieces. The Darkmantle set is is seriously good for rogues, and some argue that the full set is BIS… period. I have no plans to replace it, only things like my weapons, trinkets, etc. When I show up in 40-man raids, I still get compliments and /salutes. Every rogue and his mom and dog seems to have one of the rogue tier sets, but very few have the full Darkmantle set, so it tends to stand out. Very cool.

Vanilla has the craziest quest content. This set reminds me of scepter of shifting sands questline.

This is an excellent chain, but I don't know why anyone would bother if it's all so expensive and the rewards are inferior to tier 1. I guess it's all just group content, not raid content, so if you're 100% against forming a raid, then I guess this chain is for you.
I hope we see this chain as early as phase one, but since parts of it take place in later-phase dungeons like Dire Maul, I guess we won't.

Got my full Darkmantle set back in the day because my guild initially was too small to run 40 mans so I wanted to still have a sick set to show off my prowess as a rogue. What was awesome was once I was raiding, I was out dpsing many other rogue wearing most of their nightslayer set pieces. The Darkmantle chest piece was so good that I didn't change it until I had my 4 piece set bonus for Nightslayer. It was definitely a legit set and was sexy as hell, if I must say so myself. Lol.

In the context of these sets being *specifically* for players who are content with doing Dungeons and staying on that level, and never to Raiders in the first place, this is actually a fantastically designed, albeit expensive, chain of quests.
It may sound daunting to have to travel around the world and run all these dungeons but seeing as this was the top content for this portion of the playerbase, it no doubt made them feel like Blizzard felt they were important.
The world was so small, but compared to now, it was harder to travel from place to place so this whole questchain really felt like an epic journey and people who were content with doing Dungeons instead of Raid felt like their playstyle still mattered, and honestly, seeing someone with full D2 sets were still cool since you'd know how much work it took.

This is how a quest should be done.
Because once you finish it, you not only have a Set to wear as prove that you did it, no! Even after completing it, you still have a special item that makes you someone of great import.
Being able to summon 5 Unique bosses because you finished an expensive, long and dificult questchain is a reward in of itself.
Not only that: it is an adventure. You don't just go into a raid and kill a boss you kill anyways for an item *COUGH COUGH* Emerald Nightmare *COUGH COUGH*
You crawl through dungons and defeat bosses specifically for YOU. Because you earned it.

I remember doing this as an alliance Priest (Ted) on Shadowsong EU, we had a great 5 man team (from Ancarim Iron Legion) who always played together. To be honest, I remember the timed Strat run to be the hardest part. There was no time for any sort of mistake. One time we got to Rivendare's room just as he killed her, we were gutted.

the rogue 4/8 D2 set bonus before blizz nerfed it paired with the T3 set bonus was essentially unlimited energy.
Also the gloves for the D2 mage set, boots from the D2 warrior, and entire D2 priest set were highly sought after.

The extent of how outrageous these quests got were kinda ridiculous. That and the BC keying was where Blizz I think kinda went buckwild on making stupidly long chains and all of that armor isnt even epic. Back in Vanilla it wasn't a big deal but Blizz really should've made it full epic

Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring.... Bananna Preist! (Boop booba doba boop)
Did the whole chain on my priest way back when. All the way up to the last boss Valthalak. Then blizzard decided LFG channel was too effective at forming groups and chopped it in 1.12 I think. I was pretty pissed. Valthalak was stupid hard to get a group for. On top of that, I worked night shift in those days. Meaning i could only play in the mornings. Needless to say, I never did get the chest slot. Still have all the quest items though.
I remember having to solo most of the group content they sent me on. Mostly I'd mind control the elites and make them beat each other to a pulp. Then polish off the survivor as best i could.
My 45min strath run was the stuff of legends. A well oiled mechine that was largely being driven by an over powered tank. Even with that advantage we all had to be on point. Got there with a minute and thirty to spare. Since I couldn't raid, this my proudest accomplishment as a healer in Classic.
At least I was able to complete the look when darkmoon started selling the appearances.

that really takes me back. Didn't do all of them, but i did several in Vanilla and BC. Have you done a vid on some of the other crazy-long quests chains in vanilla like the Lost hero of the Horde that starts and ends in the Blasted Lands? There was another chain started by captive dragon UBRS (I think) that had you going all over hell and and back - I remember it included one quest that had you hopping up the side of a mountain in Winterspring and getting booted all the way to the plaguelands in the eastern kingdoms. I think Chromie was involved in that one...or she her own quest that had you running allover the place, too

It's funny because I've helped some people do parts of that old Quest but like 10 years ago. I started playing wow almost exactly when burning Crusade came out. I group 10 helps these guys and one of the things we needed to do was drop that battle standard in the middle of the arena in Blackrock Mountain

  • @akse

Wow this seems so awesome. I had long ago obtained Tier2 or higher so I didn't really bother much with this set. I have couple pieces on my alt and couple pieces on my main, I guess those that didn't require to spend any money since I didn't want to put out 200g for something I wouldn't wear.
Anyways this seems like a nice ending for the solo / small group player who doesn't go to the raiding much. Very very long chain that you can spend your time with before the end of the Classic and get the "best" pre-raid stuff on.
