    This short really hit all the right notes. A beautiful love letter to Disney and the fans. It was very emotional to see Mickey standing in front of Walt's portrait to thank him because none of this would've been possible without Walt's vision and can-do attitude. And to see Scat Cat, Alan-a-Dale and Mirabel play When You Wish Upon a Star on their respective instruments followed by Belle, the Beast, Ariel, Quasimodo, Pocahontas, Baloo, Mowgli, Mulan, Snow White, Asha and Pooh singing was the cherry on top of a perfect sundae. I hope it wins an Oscar for Best Animated Short.

    • @BG-be8di
      @BG-be8di 6 месяцев назад +4

      Oh, I also wish this short would win the Oscar, It was so heartwarming for me to see him thank Walt; and in a way for me Mickey is also a bit like Walt himself, since Walt gave him his voice and personality almost the same as him, that is, he gave his soul to Mickey and that is why he is the way he is thanks to him.

    • @nicolenguyen9955
      @nicolenguyen9955 6 месяцев назад +4

      @@BG-be8di That moment was so beautiful. I agree with everything you said about how Walt is Mickey and Mickey is Walt. I loved how they used archival recordings, particularly for Robin Williams and many other Disney voice actors like Robert Guillaume (Rafiki), Verna Felton (Flora), Barbara Luddy (Meriwether), Bobby Driscoll (Peter Pan) and Cliff Edwards (Jiminy Cricket) who have passed on. Perfect way to pay tribute to them in my opinion. Having Jiminy being the last character to sing hit all the right spots not only because When You Wish Upon a Star is from Pinocchio but also because that song is the very heart of Disney. I also love how they brought some old voice actors back to record new lines for their characters.

    This was a great reminder that when at their best, Disney is an incredible studio capable of so much.
    I was amazed by how much respect and reverence for the characters and history this short had. This felt like an actual celebration of their history and not a "highlight reel." I'm also grateful they didn't leave characters out due to a lack of popularity.

It would have been so easy for them to turn this into another brand display like RBTI with Marvel, Star Wars, Muppets, The Simpsons, etc. But no, this isn't about what Disney bought; this is about what Disney made. This is meant to be a centennial event piece. I would have made it feature length (60 - 90 minutes) and had it feature the cartoons interacting with the workers at Disney, in particular, the now scant number of people who knew Walt and worked with him personally, to name a few…
      - Dick Van Dyke
      - Don Bluth
      - Julie Andrews
      - Hayley Mills
      - Burny Mattinson (he cameos in the short, though he died early this year)
      - Floyd Norman
      - Clint Howard
      - Bruce Reitherman
      - Richard M. Sherman
      - Glynis Johns (who celebrated her 100th Birthday mere days before the company itself)
      - Karen Dotrice
      - The surviving original members of _The Mickey Mouse Club_
      My mind’s eye sees the newer stars (e.g. Elsa, Ralph, Aladdin, etc.) having a meet and greet with the veteran Disney workers regaling them with tales of their time in the golden days of the studio, their old camaraderies and their friendship with Walt. Basically make it a digestible history documentary, like what _The Muppets_ did for Jim Henson when he died. I picture Richard and Julie performing _Feed the Birds (Tuppence a Bag)_ (Walt’s favourite song) for them. Also, maybe have Mickey and the rest of the original crew (Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, even Pete) get emotional, like “We’ve never stopped missing him”.
      I don’t know, in these days when they spend hundreds of millions (each) on flops that no one likes, spending a fifth of that cost expressing reverence for their history, I believe, would have gone a long way.
      But that’s just me…

    I think my favorite part of this short was that there was no division between 2D and 3D, just every generation of Disney getting together and being like a big family, just like Walt himself might have wanted.
    If he were still alive, I bet he would be proud of what his work had led to.

    • @nicksorenson940
      @nicksorenson940 6 месяцев назад +1

      And yet those of us who know the circumstances of the studio during the mid-2000s are still wise enough to know that the whole reason their 3D movies came about in the first place during that time was always based on division against 2D, with the very intention of wanting those kind of movies to be replaced. But because they happen to show us brand new hand-drawn animation now (as beautifully gorgeous as it is) after most of the last decade was spent making an agenda out of only wanting to push 3D movies instead, now we're supposed to just want to celebrate all of the studio's animated films like the newer ones have never been any sort of unfair punishment put against 2D?
      Disney's going to need to do more than just this going forward if they really want to prove that the studio is going to be this unbiased with its animated productions. A lot more.

    1:16 Actually, there were characters from the live-action hybrids included in this short: the Mary Poppins penguins, Pete's Dragon, and characters from Bednobs and Broomsticks. I loved the short, but the exclusion of the Brers and Roger Rabbit was my only main issue with the short. The Brers were absoltely produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and should have been here, and while Roger Rabbit was animated in London, the theatrical Roger Rabbit shorts were done by Walt Disney Animation Studios, so he should have been included. Like I said though, this was my only major complaint with the short, and overall, I thought it was fantastic.

    This is what I always wanted from a Disney anniversary where different mediums and techniques directly interacts with each other to celebrate both new and old.
    I really wish Wish could do the same with being a hybrid Roger Rabbit-styled movie rather than just typical 3D with cheap cell-shaded filter. Maybe have a fantasy story where different dimensions conflicts with each other.
    The closest we got before this special was that Chip n Dale movie but they also just use cheap cell-shaded 3D similar to the recent Tom and Jerry movie with a bunch of outdated trendy cringe references.
    I think Wish was trying to awkwardly blend 3D and 2D together as a whole technical and artistic style which just end up very generic.

    In an odd way, the short is almost an allegory for Disney itself; Mickey wants to celebrate with everyone, the opportunity is destroyed, everyone is discouraged until they remembered why they are all there to begin with, they come together to do more than a celebration and give us something to just awe at. Disney as of now is in that awkward moment in which they want to make something great and enduring but due to the powers they be they fumble just like Goofy fumbled with his camera. But I think deep down, even the most cynic of us, still see value and worth in the Disney name, not the BRAND, but THE NAME. The short also reminds us that despite all the uphill battles the studio has faced, they managed to exist for ten decades and create stories that remain relevant to this day. The final shot with all the characters together truly represent each era and how Disney grew and evolved since. People often forget that Disney never really had a smooth journey, just think of what they faced:
    - Two world wars, one that forced them to essentially work for the US Government promoting the efforts while making efforts on the side
    - An animator's strike
    - Fantasia being Walt's biggest failure that he never recovered from
    - The great depression
    - Walt going from animation to live action to television to theme parks
    - Walt and Roy, the men that founded the studio, dying and making everyone struggle to try and keep everything afloat amidst a business takeover that nearly had the company be sold off two times
    - A rennaisance that saw tremendous success cut short that CEOs that clashed over egos and losing one of the men that held everything together
    - A revolution in computer animation that saw allies in Pixar and rivals in Dreamworks that made 2D animation irrelevant
    - A sudden change in the guard that both marked a new era in every facet of the company while also making non-Disney IP purchases that felt almost monopolistic
    - A pandemic that altered all of their game plans
    - A change of CEO so bad they are still recovering from it while the current CEO is struggling to find equal footing with the strikes
    And yet, despite all of that, we can't be fully cynical at Disney because there is a reason we got here to begin with and this shorts splendidly showcased that; we love their stories, artistry, music, and timeless characters that tug at the heart and represent the best of who we can be. So if Disney managed to celebrate their Centennial despite all of what is going on, we can all go on with the show and hope for the best.

    Dude I straight tear up in that scene with Mickey Mouse talk to the Picture of Walt.....manly tears my dude. What can I say....FINALLY SOMETHING THAT FEEL DISNEY, the old magic was in this short and for the love of all gods, WE NEED MORE, seen the traditional 2D characters done in cell shade hand draw animation bring me joy, everyone was portrait in the way they are in their movies, no politics, no BS, no signaling, just pure old fashion charm of a Disney story, seen again characters like Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet, Kida and Milo from Atlantis, Princess Eilonwy from the Black Cauldron, the cows from Home on the Range, the Brother Bear characters, or the Meet the Robinsons getting represented in this short truly show the love for ALL DISNEY not just the successful ones, this was truly magical...and makes me wonder, damn WHY THEY HAVE NEVER MADE A NEW Mickey Mouse film, a full length theatrical Mickey film? I would love to see something like that been 2D or 3D. Anyway I love this short, so even if WISH not be a good film, at least this short is worth pay the price for see that film in theaters (I assume is also playing before WISH...RIGHT? I hope).
