Same here! I’ve heard British music instructors analyze his bass lines and they are baffled at the skill level. They keep saying... “ Nobody Does This!” Bronson, you are listening to the most advanced, Super high IQ’d, Bass player that ever lived. Nobody ever came close. Sooo many miracles going on in this song. Like it’s written in 4/4 time... until it’s not. Meaning you can’t count 4/4 from start to finish without winding up out of sync. The change first change happens rite before the chorus while Marvin is saying... “Say man I just don’t understand what’s going on cross this land”. And Jamerson follows this odd 4/3 change. But the next time it happens is what gives me goosebumps every friggin time. Marvin say “ And tell me friend, How in the world have you been?” The bass on that part is otherworldly! It changes keys 3 times before “ How in the world....” and Jamerson just owns it. Most bass players would just play the 3 main key changes and stay safe.James squeezes the 3main notes between a flurry of notes with triplets and .... Agh, it’s just too much! You gotta hear that song no less than 1000 times to even scratch the surface.

      @edennard1 5 лет назад +7

The only bass player that might can get the closest to this is
Willie Weeks..and that’s taking nothing away from Wilton Felder , Ronnie Brown, Bob Babbit and Leroy Hodges ...
      Honorable mention goes to
Jermaine Jackson... yeah that Jackson.. because it was said that Jermaine practice Janes Jamerson bass lines all of the time..

This album scared Berry Gordy to death. Motown was about producing non-threatening pop that would cross over to white teens. He was not inclined to release a protest album with such a strong message. This song was rarely aired because the message was waaaaay too deep for the time. Black servicemen coming home from combat to discrimination and joblessness. Nobody wanted to acknowledge that. Smokey Robinson would later say that Black servicemen would tell him that his music got them through the war and it is his proudest moment. Nearly 50 years later nobody wants to acknowledge the negative effects of that war. This song is profound.

    Hey baby, what'cha know good
I'm just gettin' back, but you knew I would
War is hell, when will it end,
When will people start gettin' together again
Are things really gettin' better, like the newspaper said
What else is new my friend, besides what I read
Can't find no work, can't find no job my friend
Money is tighter than it's ever been
Say man, I just don't understand
What's going on across this land
    Ah what's happening brother,
Ay, what's happening, what's happening my man
Are they still gettin' down where we used to go and dance
Will our ball club win the pennant,
Do you think they have a chance
And tell me friend, how in the world have you been
Tell me what's out and I want to know what's in
What's the deal man, what's happening
    What's happening brother
    What's happening brother
    Ah what's happening brother
    What's happening my man
    Ah what's happening brother
    Say it man!
    What's happening brother
What's been shaken up and down the line
I want to know 'cause I'm slightly behind the time

songs like this opened up peoples eyes to the damage war has on a person,i am an ex British soldier and only did one tour of N Ireland, and when i was stationed in Germany in 77,we did a troop exchange,30 yanks went to our camp and 30 Brits went to theirs, and I spoke to a lot of guys who had served in Vietnam and were still in the army, and I said to this guy, after all that, why are still in the army, and he said, where else can i go,i am accepted here,at home i don't fit in anymore,

You can hear a glimpse of genius, bassist James Jamerson on most Motown recordings. Even others who came after him, Bob Babbitt, Carol Kaye etc, tried to keep his sound going. Nothing compares to this master piece of an album. Marvin Gaye wanted no one else but Mr. Jamerson himself to record / perform on this album.

Its about marvin and jamerson for the first 5 songs on WGO. Listen to how the bass player interps the vocalist sentiments. Greatest album ever!!!

It was when I realized that this song had *phrasing* ...it didn't just have a short loop of predictable notes, like modern pop music, but went thru an entire journey of chords and harmonies across different keys (something that I had thought exclusive to classical music).
This song really helped open up my mind to the possibilities of music.
