"What's Going On" doesn't exist without "What's Happening Brother", if you ask me. It's two faces of the same coin. One of the most stunning albums ever made, this song brings me to tears every time.
AMEN! He gets right to the point in this cut, but I always wished that it was longer!
You're right both of the songs are so similar.
Add to it Mercy mercy and God is my friend
Rolling Stone magazine voted this the greatest album in the history of the world and I agree with them 💯💯💯💯, and I also agree with you about What's Happening Brother, I think that it's an extension of What's Going On.... And I listen to the album if not every day I listen to it almost everyday....
Brothers are saying " the only thing they give us, USA's culture, drugs ", it's appears ; some people don't know what happened to the lndians' children still to today n culturvating people cultures;
2021 and we still don't know what's happening, brother. 😓
R.I.P. Marvin the prophet
No he was a legend but certainly not a prophet! No point blaspheming for the sake of it
@@classicalexpert5915 he’s handsome bro. They lose their minds when you’re handsome😏
Based on Merriam Websters Dictionary, Marvin Gaye was indeed a prophet!...
Amen...
Amen..
As I sit here with my legs crossed, smoking a Newport, on my phone…. Flying high is the next track…… listen to the album. Love you Marvin, see you soon brotha
This visual is so touching to me. To me it represents today’s black man “brother” hurt and stressed(cigarette) from everything going on around the world e.g Racism, gas prices, inflation, crime, etc. He’s on the phone giving an update to Marvin letting him know what’s been happening and not really much has changed 😔. R.i.p Prophet Marvin 🙏🏾
This album is truly legendary, one of the most truthful albums that still speaks 50 years later.
I agree with you.
Sadly true, although the tide is turning 🙏
This track has never lost its relevance. America's endless wars...
You need Jesus an Marvin would tell you the same
Real as joy pain sunshine n rain peace
"Say man I just don't understand what's goin on across this land."
Smokey Robinson was absolutely right when he said this album was prophecy 💯 . Can't find no work can't find no job my friend money is tighter than ever hit me really hard. I'm from 🇿🇦 and unemployment for the youth is really a struggle here in our country.
I’m unemployed and have been for a bit myself.
Hope things get better but not looking good at all unfortunately with still almost 1 mil (or 700,000-800,000 for the duration of the 2 some odd years of this crises and counting, you do the numbers ) per week..
Effecting good portion of working adult population (much worse then the 30 some odd % of the Great Depression).
6-7% unemployment rate can’t be accurate since the way they count the ‘data’ has changed..
They used to include people once they ran out of funds if still unemployed
but now if you not collecting your weekly benefits and run out your no longer counted..
So it’s not what it seems at all.
I told my wife and my funeral I want this whole album played front to back over and over and over throughout the whole thing from the viewing of the body until the burial and I go in the ground one of the World's Greatest Albums from start to finish
Man, we have parallel thought patterns...I've expressed this to my family as well. Marvin Gaye transcended space and time with this masterful creation...The Universe spoke - HE delivered...
Fact
0:31 - 0:50 That harmonic run down resulting in “When will people start getting together again” With the violins in the background. Absolute bliss. Melts my heart.
Marvin ain't dead. He's still singing, living and breathing.👍🏿🙏🏿
He's doing concert right now with Biggie n Tupac. And the whole show is MC'd by Richard Pryor and Red Fox. What a show that would be 🤔😌🤜🏿🤛🏿
Hits my soul and brings me to tears every time I hear this. So many thoughts.
The sheer beauty of this album had me in tears. Amazing what art can make you feel.
Thank you brother. ❤️
Thank you Brother the master piece of our Great ancestor Marvin Gaye
Happy 50th anniversary sir you are forever missed.🙏🏼
Yes, he is!
this song is so hauntingly beautiful
My favourite song from the album
It’s either this one or “Right On”.
people are so surprised when i say i like music like this im 16 years old and have an very old soul and honestly i dont call it that, its just good, pure, soul and meaningful music. i wish my generation could understand it.
@lifewithroe ,read biblical scriptures n works nwords authorized authorization form God Almighty; check out the Psalms n proverds, the wholly whole Bible when do that then ones Shall understand Eternal Now governing consciousness soulselves with subtle energies of God . Amen,7times with halleluJAH !
same, I got into soul & jazz when I was like 14 or 15 (twice that age now tho lol). I think a lot of ppl in that age bracket are generally just not aware of the sociopolitical realities of the 60s/70s (which is fair enough really right?) but yeah I also prefer the whole "love is the answer" zeitgeist of that era over the soulless stuff that's popular nowadays
Same
@@malikamaluca2879 yessss!
Keep listening
When he does that run on the been in "how in the world have you been" I get shivers!
Word. That's the core of the song..making that connection. His brother Freddie was in Vietnam. Imagine making it out, getting 'back to the world' so you could see your folks again. Speaks volumes about humanity, the good and the bad. That's what makes this album so wonderful, it's more than just Marvin singing.
same
Absolutely
Yes !
I cry 🥺❤️
Mercy, Mercy me!!
I miss my BIG BROTHER

Gone but never forgotten
Southern CA.:
This album is truly legendary & is relatable & relevant even today more than ever . Marvin Gaye definitely was a master of music 🎶. What’s going on by Far is his best album to date . They’re messages all in this song. This song & Inner City blues even hit different in 2024. It’s like not too much has changed today. We’re still asking the Question What’s Going On & What’s Happening Brother?
Believe it or not, this is my favorite track on this wonderful album!
X2
I gotta say mine too!
For me it’s the bass performance. Bananas!
Honestly, yeah. I enjoy how the mix just seems a little less crowded, plus I simply haven't played this as much as Mercy Mercy Me or What's Going On.
Mine too
Same here!
Still play this beautiful unique album regularly and still relevant to our troubled times 😥
Greetings from Italy. Miss you Marvin 💖
Happy 50th anniversary 💞 Marvin great music 🎵 that will live on
hello, why do think so few likes and listens?
Maybe people have his music at home?
Or some trickery?
Salute to The Andantes. Love you, ladies.
The beginning part with the angelic female background vocals make me cry.
This song and album was relevant then and still relevant in these times. Just brilliant 🎶🎵🎼. Thank you Marvin 💓
I’m shocked at the number of views and likes with some of these tracks..
I never concern myself with numbers but this is kinda strange to say the least!
Yes! It is!
Yes thank you Marvin Gaye.
I love this 🎵 here. I was 8 when this album came out, but even then, I knew the significance of it. Still, half a century later, we're still listening.
this Bass LINE is killer!!!
It was track 2 on the album. WGO (the single) had been out for months before the album dropped.
This song took a serious theme, a conversation between two brothers about coming home from the war, and turned it into a finger popping masterpiece.
James Jamerson is the star of this song.
That bass is the slickest piece of bass work ever recorded.
Awesome song, Marvin!!!!
Mercy me vibes🕺
Saw him live many beers ago
A true legend his singing really touches you. ❤ 🔥 You can feel what he's saying.
The best to ever do it!!
One of the Greatest songs from the album What’s Going on, hope to get a hold of the 50th anniversary vinyl some time soon 👏🏼
Marvin Gaye is the Better. Number One. The King.

Discovered this song two years ago and fell in love!!
Best baseline ever. EVER! ❤
Motown best soul Bronze Man master of music
Now is the time to listen to the masterpieces on the album What's going on.
This song is amazing, wonderful. I love Marvin.
The Vietnam War was raging when this came out. I was two.
Gracias, Marvin!

Still till this day people don't understand what Marvin is trying 2 say I will love him 4 ever shikil67
Vert sad Marvin passed. One of the best songs ever written!
The bass on this is awesome
Man! since the pandemic started i have lost track of some friends (best friend included). When this is all over i can't wait to put this track while i meet them all again.
you are still alive in our souls Marvin, you are the king of our living souls and you will be our king forever. not only the Portuguese people know the meaning of "saudade" just like we miss you. After all, you will forever be the guide of our feelings.🙏😍🙏
The greatest to ever do it
Im probably one of the few young ones here
Shout out to all the young souls out there like me who enjoy all music types
This song go through the time and for long time across countries ,civilization and humanity…is there a way to stop conflicts ….
Didn't think it was possible, but these visualizers really do add something special to music that's already timeless and omnipresent. It's amazing.
This Album was voted as Album of the Century, by Rolling Stone Magazine a couple of years ago.
Powerful then--equally as powerful today. Love blessing, peace & safety fam!
Magnifique, Musique Made in Africa.
James Jamerson is a genius.
Rolling Stone , called it the greatest album of all time. Marvin Gaye my hero.
Wow…
:How in he world have you been:❤️
The Vietnam theme in this album is very prevalent. This is a piece of history, the story of a vet coming back to broken country.
💎💎💎MARVIN💎💎💎
GRANDISSIMO....DA BRIVIDI...
A classic ✌🏿🎼🎶🎧🎤💯
It's because of that bass line Marvin actually went out to all the bars to try to find James Jamerson to put this album together that night they panned out what's going on that night and what's happening Brother was a variation on that by Jameson who he then sculpted the variation around Marvins voice really listen to the Baseline that's what makes the song. It's like the bass is singing a duet with him, basically Jamerson is the brother.
THAT WAS AWSOME!!!
Sign of our time
Stupenda!!!
Grazie!!! Buon pomeriggio a tutti ❤🌹
The Funk Brothers and Marvin make this toon happen! Brilliant!
Hey baby, what'cha know good
I'm just gettin' back, but you knew I would
War is hell, when will it end?
When will people start gettin' together again?
Are things really gettin' better, like the newspaper said?
What else is new my friend? Besides what I read
Can't find no work, can't find no job, my friend
Money is tighter than it's ever been
Say, man, I just don't understand
What's going on across this land
Ah, what's happening, brother?
Ay, what's happening? What's happening my man? Woo
Are they still gettin' down where we used to go and dance?
Will our ball club win the pennant?
Do you think they have a chance?
And tell me, friend, how in the world have you been?
Tell me what's out and I want to know what's in
What's the deal man, what's happening
What's happening, brother?
What's happening, brother?
Ah, what's happening, brother?
What's happening my man?
Woo, ah, what's happening, brother?
Say it, man, woo
What's happening, brother?
What's been shaking up and down the line?
I want to know 'cause I'm slightly behind the times
Woo-hoo, ooh-ooh
Thank you 😊
I want traduction for Arabic plz
Thanks buddy
God 🙏🏿 bless ya😉👍🏿
Brasil te ama "Brasil Love you"
The 70s were very interesting times. In fact, that decade is often forgotten about. We always talk about the 80s and 90s, but the 70s was the birth decade of everything happening today: Feminism, LGBT, BLM, etc etc etc. Even war breaking now now all over the place. We just don't have a draft... Yet.
Happy 50th of very serious soul music ✌🏿🎼🎶🎧🎤💯
💯
Love it 🥰
The legend🙏🏻🙏🏻
Beautifully haunting… one of the last “concept “ albums

Coldest album ever. EH....VER. ✊🏾😎
Marvin forever 🥰😍❤️💪🙏
Thirsty-ass @RUclips put a 44 minute ad in just as Marvin was emitting that final falsetto wail like it's gonna make me *want* to *pay* for premium instead of buying a record player. *Mom's album collection in pristine condition, algorithm.*
Happy 50th anniversary...still at war
🤷♂️
This is an excellent song... 🎉🎉🎉😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Mi canción favorita de Marvin, me encanta, refleja la amargura de la realidad.
