@JacquelineFox-xo6jn Marvin, in his own way was telling us we need God, and each other to change the world around us before we can face the rest of it. Stand together as one total force, and love one another. Clean up our neighborhoods, stop killing one another, respect one another. God made us to be Kings and Queens, not clowns, queers and hoes on the street. Once we get this, we will be ready to do what need to be done. I pray we still have a world to live in!!!!

This song was released in 1971. It was written in 1970. 50 years and what has changed except the years? We are definitely headed backwards instead of progressing forward. Marvin was our prophet when he wrote this album about the turbulent times of that era. I wonder what he would say now? It's really so sad that this is prevalent 50 years later.

Look at this video closely. This is New York City in the 70s. What a mess. We made it back then through hard and honest work. Not regretting the status quo or questioning the entire system like protesters today. Looting and anarchy leads back in time.

This is life, raw, uncut, uncensored. This song has more truth in it, than anything any organization, talking head, politician or pundit, spews out for their own greedy self-interest... Marvin Gaye was a true poet, painting with words the harshness but also the beauty of our existence. No matter who you are and where you are from, there is something in this song for all of us!

      Translation
Government men are always like carnivorous demons called Rākṣasas [man-eaters]. Sometimes these government men turn against the conditioned soul and take away all his accumulated wealth. Being bereft of his life’s reserved wealth, the conditioned soul loses all enthusiasm. Indeed, it is as though he loses his life.
      Purport
The word rāja-kula-rakṣasā is very significant. Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam was compiled about five thousand years ago, yet government men are referred to as Rākṣasas, or carnivorous demons. If government men are opposed to a person, that person will be bereft of all his riches, which he has accumulated with great care over a long period of time. Actually no one wants to pay income taxes - even government men themselves try to avoid these taxes - but at unfavorable times income taxes are exacted forcibly, and the taxpayers become very morose.

      Srimad-bhagavatam 5.14.16

Absolutely. I was a young teenager in the seventies, and I remember. It was like a cultural shift, an explosion almost--in 1971 and '72 Marvin and Curtis started releasing music that put the whole industry on notice, though I would add that Aretha Franklin's 1967 "Respect" (written and originally released by Otis Redding in '65) was a forerunner, a musical landmark for both the civil rights and feminist movements.

I disagree. Remember this comes on the heels of inequity and white claimed superiority that Malcolm X, M.L.King, jr., Stokely Carmicheal et. al. as well as a whole group of people (those who were descendants of illegal commerce) who were screaming these very words (paraphrased) to their oppressors . Music though, indeed is a language of its own that traverses ethnicity, creed and kind...as well as the American born term--Race. Marv was not some unique savant to this...he just took the b.s. that white America had yoked him with and put it into capitalist/Christian terms. Yes, wonderful song...but the plight was before him as well as after (and current). Why do ppl hate...usually because they have been wronged . So Marvin is basically asking what have Blacks done wrong to deserve the maltreatment.
