This song was released in 1971. It was written in 1970. 50 years and what has changed except the years? We are definitely headed backwards instead of progressing forward. It was like a cultural shift, an explosion almost--in 1971 and '72 Marvin and Curtis started releasing music that put the whole industry on notice, though I would add that Aretha Franklin's 1967 "Respect" (written and originally released by Otis Redding in '65) was a forerunner, a musical landmark for both the civil rights and feminist movements.

Remember this comes on the heels of inequity and white claimed superiority that Malcolm X, M.L.King, jr., Stokely Carmicheal et. al. as well as a whole group of people (those who were descendants of illegal commerce) who were screaming these very words (paraphrased) to their oppressors . Music though, indeed is a language of its own that traverses ethnicity, creed and kind...as well as the American born term--Race. Marv was not some unique savant to this...he just took the b.s. that white America had yoked him with and put it into capitalist/Christian terms. Yes, wonderful song...but the plight was before him as well as after (and current). Why do ppl hate...usually because they have been wronged . So Marvin is basically asking what have Blacks done wrong to deserve the maltreatment.
