    Oh, boy :-) Seeing this reminds me of the HUGE 1/16 scale Dora two modellers built WAY back in the mid-1990's, and was shown in one of the major modelling magazines at the time :-) Beautiful kit, and finish all round here.

      Thank you Paul. Wow, a 1:16 Dora? That's insane!

      @@ModelNerd Believe me, the photo's they had to show how they built it, and then the finished product had to be seen to be believed :-) They went on to build other railway guns in the same scale later, but how they stored them has always remained a mystery to me :-D They even converted some 1/16 scale figures to make gun/train crew for their later models, which just added so much more realism to the whole thing. Truly dedicated, truly awesome pair of modellers, and I just wish I'd managed to keep hold of the magazine they were in, as most people didn't believe it possible to build something in that scale. Then again, one IPMS group built a 1:1 scale TIE fighter from Star Wars not so long ago. Took them two whole years just to build it, and they posted images online, but then again, my memory did its usual trick and made me forget the page address where they posted the images :-> getting older is NOT working for me the way I wanted it to do :-D

    great looking kit. putting it in a diorama really shows off its size when you have little trucks alongside. :)

      Thanks Colin. It really does, doesn't it? At first I thought I had printed the trucks in 1:100 scale instead of 1:72, but no!

    Welcome back buddy, its looking fabulous and coming together nicely and taking shape. Painting had to be a pain, but I too loved the result. The oil work gives it life and very much look forward to the weathering. (didn't notice any audio issues to be of concern)

  • @robbo1068

    The modulation and weathering certainly did the trick.....from dull grey to a representation of the Dora as it was in real life. The effort was certainly worth the time and care taken resulting in an excellent paint job. The diorama taster was a pleasant surprise at the end, too.

    This is coming along really nicely bud. The colour variation works well to break up all the grey, though the base should help too.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад +1

      Thanks. Yes, it's quite tricky with just Dunkelgrau and something so large. I'm not sure what to do about the terrain yet - technically the rails are built especially for the Dora so the ground would likely all be torn up and muddy as it's basically a building site. But I am tempted to put some grass down instead.

      @BrushQuill 2 года назад

      @@ModelNerd I suppose you could do half and half like they just laid a 2nd track next to an existing one?

  • @allanrichards3752
    @allanrichards3752 2 года назад +1

    I think you said that when these guns were deployed they were run on curved rails to give traverse adjustment. When I painted mine I made it look old like it was outside a museum on representative straight rails. It was a massive job to paint it all. I had to really persevere to finish it. I used black, white and rust tones to weather it Ns I also found dry brushing brought out a lot of the detail. Your build is looking great and the diorama will really set it off.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад

      Thanks Allan, the dry-brushing is a good idea. Yes, curved rails for aiming. I did consider trying this but the supplied rails are straight and the extra base size would be a bit much. Also, I don't think the HobbyBoss kit is designed to go on curved track - the attachment points from the body to the wagons are square (although they could easily be fixed).

    Looking great. The color modulation really makes a difference. I wasn't going to do any but after seeing yours I may reconsider. Do you mind sharing where you got the chain?

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад

      Thanks Steve. Yes, modulation is a funny effect - it can definitely be overdone,a bit like HDR in photography. The chain....hmmm....it was a long time ago (I just found it in my spares box). It was probably from HobbyLink Japan when I lived in Malaysia, but I think most model shops online will stock some.

    I've just noticed 😳Dora part 4. Looking average...so, so...NO ! It looks 👍great. I was wondering about the weathering if, being packed away and brought out on special occasions, it would be greasy and dusty?? You are right about the gallons of paint 🎨 on this model. The decals...ha, ha, ha nice to know I'm not the only one who stuffs up. It's annoying but once they are on you're committed. Looking forward to the next installment, hope you've settled in okay.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад +1

      Thank you guy :) Yes, I thought that about the limited use of the Dora too...however, I figured the process of packing, transporting, and deploying would create some dirt and maybe damage, plus it is a big industrial machine with lots of moving parts. But I won't be adding a lot of dirt or grime to the upper areas (and no rust).

      My wife and I were watching the build and she wanted to know about the kit so I showed her the unboxing. She said I should buy it for one of my sons; he's a model maker mostly WW II and Vietnam. He lives in Australia 🇦🇺 so in Aussie it's $269 to $299AU dollars in New Zealand 🇳🇿its $369 NZ dollars; $2NZ dollars = £1 so it gives you an idea 💡 of cost. Stay safe.

    I just ordered this model. Its my first time. Im not really intimidated by the build, famous last words but i 100 percent am worried about the painting. Especially after just watching how nice of a job you did. I bought myself a small paint sprayer but im really lost on the paints and brushes. Do you have any suggestions on how i could improve my painting skills? Thanks so much. I really enjoyed the videos

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад +1

      For the paints I like Tamiya acrylics and AK Real Colours. I thin both with Tamiya lacquer thinner (rather than their acrylic thinner). Thinking back to when I started airbrushing, I think the key things are thinning the paint correctly and setting a decent air pressure. Early on I probably had my paint too thick and my PSI too high. Now I generally use around 20 psi. One thing I really like about the two paint brands mentioned above is that they are generally very tolerant of incorrect settings. Compare that to something like Vallejo acrylics which brush very, very well but where (in my experience) airbrushing requires the thinning ratio and PSI to be very precise, plus a little rain dance before you airbrush. I hope this helps - have fun with your model!

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Mike. For the airbrush nozzle, sometimes I take a small amount of lacquer thinner (e.g. in the Tamiya bottle cap) and submerge the nozzle in it. I find that tends to do the trick.

    • @mikemodels928

    If I had this kit and If I was painting this I would just completely build it first and then use tamiya field grey spray paint then apply the decals personally I think it looks better completely field Grey

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 года назад

      To be honest I think you'd struggle if you built the whole kit first. There are so many small, inaccessible areas (e.g. just in between the two sides) that you'd never get the paint into without flooding the surrounding areas.

    Wow! Really nice build. In my opinion, the detail parts of all manufacturers is a good idea, but if they don’t fit it’s really worthless. I’m building an off brand Russian armored car, super detailed but the fit is poor. She might end up in the trash or destroyed. Nice job.
