Hi Peg.. I use large maple a lot.. but try to keep the diameter less than 12 inch so it will fit in my pressure pot.. but here is a idea.. I turned 8-10 cake platters..the are turn so the base is much small and the object is 3 to 3.25 inches tall.. after round a cut in a trough about 1/4 inch from the edge and about 1/2 inch deep and 1/2 inch wide.. I fill this with beads and clear resin or with small branches with black, yellow or red resin.. after set I turn away the rind to expose the the out rim..then I cut down the inside 1/2 inch to expose the inside of the resin..then finish.. perfect cake or pie platter..

I have turned many bowls for over 50 years..perhaps more than 800-1000 bowls.. I give the all away and most are from oak, walnut, locus, and maple firewood..many start out as green and stabilize in my very hot attic about my wood shop..I like your efforts here..they make me wonder and create more..thanks

When I first saw you paint it I thought Yuck please no don't paint that beautiful wood but now that I have seen the finished product it looked amazing. Well done. I'm not a big fan of painting timber of any sort but this idea of only half painting might change my mind about painting timber.

Peggy, a very nice platter. I was looking at the wall, expecting to see some paint on it. I couldn't tell if it got flung that far. There are some nice pics of turners that do vids on Acks site, yours is one of them. Thanks for your vid.

Thanks, Joseph! Yeah, there is some paint on the wall, though I did try to minimize it!

I was going to mention that this video was the first time you've shown your face at all, albeit in a mask, but thought it was just me that was curious to put a face to the voice; then you mentioned in the video that you'd gotten a lot of comments/requests- I guess it's not just me... Great platter. I love watching you turn, and have learned a lot. Thanks!

Personally, I would not have painted it at all since the maple had such lovely figuring in it, but that is just how I would have liked it.
