    Ii have a version 2 with an inverter. It is functional. Provided Starlink make a multi voltage AC/DC kit affordable - there will be a temptation to migrate. Otherwise my cobbled together solution still works.

    My buddy is a nomad and just upgraded to a gen3 version. He installed a dc to dc converter (12v to 48v) on his van and it works perfect without a inverter, so there is 3rd party hardware out there for the nomads...😎

    • @kennethtolcou884
      @kennethtolcou884 2 месяца назад +2

      I've done the same in my Airstream with a v2 dishy. Needed 3 new items, the 12v to 48v converter, POE injector and converter to the proprietary dishy cable. I already had a router the takes multiple inputs. If I lose starlink signal (or turn it off to save power) my hotspot automatically takes over. This setup, by not needing the inverter and the 110 wall wort saves considerably on my 400 Ah Lithium battery bank. I'll be interested to see how much better my connectivity is out east this year with partial tree cover. It's mostly a non issue in the south west.

    I currently bring my Starlink with me everywhere. I have the latest model upgraded from gen 2. When I go to a park, a party, flying my drone, or just chilling in my vehicle while my wife shops I just toss it out and have high speed internet. I also have the Bluetti AC180 with me that I connect the Starlink to. It can last 10hrs connected to that battery and even more if I hook up my solar panels while using it. Starlink is truly a game changer for me and I can’t wait to see what this Mini can do when released.

  • @brettb9600
    @brettb9600 2 месяца назад +3

    I've been running the current non-motorized array flat. I've never 'aligned' it. No need. I also tested using a 12V-56V 6A converter and found it to be slightly less efficient than a dedicated 200W ($40) inverter powering the SL power supply. Keep in mind the current array runs on 57V. Which is pretty close to the mid point of 120V. Less is gained by going all DC than previous model. We'll see with the mini but there certainly will be a boost converter inside if it runs on 12V DC, unless they come up with a low voltage PoE. Unlikely.

    I'm with you in the hopes that they produce a DC system for us RVs. I presently have the gen II system and put it up and down on a flag pole and need to run my inverter if off grid camping. I have thought about converting mine but keep waiting for Starlink to come out with a DC model and would love to be in on testing it if I can find the info on how.

    Starlink isn't legal yet in my country, but after a lot of government related institutions and individuals got flack on social media for using it, a crackdown was announced. People can now call you in to the authorities and you get stuck with a fine. It got bad enough that someone started dressing dishes up as solar panels or fitting them in solar light housings. The mini, apart from hopefully being cheaper, might encourage even more people to try if the dish is more discreet.

    The question isn't about having a backpack size dish, it's about the power needed to power the dish and router.

    My question is. can we just purchase the new hardware and have it interchangeable with our existing account? Back and forth as needed. Without spending another hundred and twenty bucks or more per month.

    I think the $150 a month for 50GB of data is too expensive. It will be $1 a GB for additional data after the 50GB plan is exceeded. The pricing model reminded me of when cell phone plans rolled out data on minute plans before unlimited. The device is also $600 each.

    It kinda has to run off DC. Not many AC power sources out there than can fit in a backpack. I’m hoping it will run off a 65watt USB-c port.

    Every time you talk about the dishes laying flat I can't help think about water pooling on it or having problems with snow and ice. At least for a dish you can't reach at your home.

    this is not something you would want to mount on your house for your home system, correct? it most likely does not have the ability to melt snow

      Fyi, I was one of the beta testers for the mesh network. They made changes based on my feedback. Simplifying the connection process so that the initial router didn't have to be reset to the factory settings to then "see" the mesh router. They also modified the software do that the main router can be hot swapped with a mesh router without going thru the factory reset process.

      I think in the not so distant future, within the next 2 years, it will be incorporated in all phones and all devices that connect to the internet. Will be an internal antenna just like the cell tower antenna that's already in your phone. Cell towers will be replaced with satellite in leo. I don't think it is long before we see this.
