Dream on (from email I just received, though I've cancelled Starlink) so the actual price is $150/month PLUS an additional $600 up front for the "Mini", what a deal (you're better off with the original "Roam" service, same monthly cost, $100 cheaper for the equipment AND UNLIMITED DATA vs just 50GB with this mini) -
Starlink Mini is a compact, portable kit that can easily fit in a backpack, designed to provide high-speed, low-latency internet on the go.
Starlink Mini includes a built-in WiFi router, lower power consumption, DC power input, and max download speeds over 100 Mbps*. See Starlink Mini specifications here.
"You are invited to purchase the Starlink Mini Kit for $599 and bundle the Mini Roam service with your existing Residential service plan for an additional $30/mo."
Our goal is to reduce the price of Starlink, especially for those around the world where connectivity has been unaffordable or completely unavailable. But in regions with high usage, where Starlink Mini places additional demand on the satellite network, we are offering a limited number of the Starlink Mini Kits to start for $599.
Our first 10,000 orders will be shipped ahead of July 4th. Remaining orders will take 2 to 4 weeks to ship.
      Starlink Mini Roam Service Plan
      Starlink Mini Lifestyle
We are offering Starlink customers the option to bundle Starlink Mini with their Residential service.
The Mini Roam service is an additional $30/mo for 50GB of Mobile data that can be used anywhere in the United States ($1/GB for additional data).
You must continue your Residential service on your current Starlink to use Mini Roam service.
This invitation is only valid for one order on this account (A__-1______-78___-__).
Customers cannot trade-in their current Starlink for Starlink Mini.

Ever since the first round Dishy came out, and I saw some intrepid adventurers pack the dish, router, battery and inverter back up into some remote mountain location.. and then do a live stream video.. I've thought about this. Now, a little over three years since the very first beta customers went live, we're now seeing the next iteration of this. Just fantastic.

Totally! I started with the BETA hardware and still run it at home. I got the mini invite last week and my mini arrives on tomorrow (6/24/2024) and just in time for a road trip. The Starlink mini is the platform I wanted from the beginning. I want to be able to work from the backwoods. I don't need streaming video (and if I do I'll just pay the 1G per $1 offset). I mostly want to run it off grid with my battery/solar system. I'm a Native Texan too, but way up here in the Pacific North West. :)

Yeah, with all highly iterative tech products it's best to just buy what meets your needs right now and not worry too much about what comes next. Buying something that is quickly surpassed can feel like you're missing out, but it also means you get to enjoy bigger jumps forward every time you get around to upgrading. I try to keep all my smartphone, GPU, and CPU purchases at least 3 generations apart.

So RVers will now have to feed two cables to the inside of the car instead of one. DC is one cable, and (because Wifi will not be sufficient through the roof, especially if the RV is built of metal) you will need a router or access point connected via ethernet inside of the RV. I would prefer a seperate 12-volt-router with built-in POE so one flat cable to the roof would be sufficient. That´s the way I use my dishy v2 right now - powered by 12V via step up POE and a router powered by USB.
The solution now published is perfect certainly for e.g. people with a shed, that is powered by solar via a Jackery. Backpackers will have limited online time due to energy restrictions anyway (100Wh power bank gives you maybe 3 hrs.) And RVers will have to live with two cables.

None of those Wifi 6 enhancement should be needed where this dish is going to be used. Don't need to connect 100's of devices in the middle of the woods, not going to have many hackers around to need to worry about your encryption and sqft you're not trying to cover an entire house. USB-C PD also means you can use a battery bank to run it.

You’re right Joe, this is a huge game changer. Our radio club is doing Field Day this weekend at a public setting.
Now that this capability is a reality, I expect people to ask me why they should bother to get their amateur radio license when this powerful portable technology is now available. TBH, I’m starting to wonder that myself. Everything I can do in an emergency with my portable 20M radio and an end-fed antenna can now be accomplished with this unit..and more.

Everyone is focusing on the Mini portability aspect. I think this is a huge mistake. Think IOT of Things. This gives companies a far more reliable connection to remote monitoring equipment than microwave or cellular technologies. It is also not dependent on old power sources. A standard small solar setup with battery, will provide all the power this device needs for days or weeks.
The following is not based on any inside information, it is speculation. Ignoring the cost of purchase for a minute, read below.
    1 gen 2 = 250 meg of bandwidth, 1 gen 3 = 350 meg of bandwidth. 1 mini = 100 meg of bandwidth.
REALITY CHECK. VERY FEW RETAIL CUSTOMERS USE THE FULL CAPACITY OF A STARLINK. So here is my guestimate.
A single satellite will carry 2.5 to 4x more customers at the same time. Possibly higher. This means if the monthly service of a mini is $60, the mini will generate more gross income per satellite. This massively expands the capacity of the existing satellites. I would want one of these on my vehicle, permanently mounted. Full wifi phone coverage without worrying where i am located.

I'm curious why they didn't choose to add a PoE option in addition to the power brick option. Since its portable, having less cables would be useful. Connecting a power brick to a device that must stay outside in the weather doesn't make a lot of sense unless you have perfect weather. That's why the existing units use the starlink cable between the dish and router in the existing models.

  • @IncognitaLabs
    @IncognitaLabs 3 месяца назад +5

For those in colder climes a snap-on black plastic cover for the unit would cut down a great deal
on the amount of current required to keep the dish free of snow and ice. If you watch a black car
and a white car after a snowfall the black car melts off its snow cover MUCH faster than the white car when sunlight hits it. Sometimes a really simple and cheap design choice can save a lot of energy.

They want $599 for the Mini hardware and charge an extra $30 per month for usage in addition to the $120 that I now am charged. Also, only usable in the United States. That is a game stopper for me since I do travel a bit and this would be ideal for that.

I have laptops and other random devices. I'll buy 4 and one is really works from Amazon or ebay. If I can use 12V DC directly I've got 12V 100 Amp/hour LiFeP04 batteries all day long. I don't trust 'the grid' for forever and I plan to build solar capacity later. Sorry skeptical prepper. You have to spend real $$ to get true PD chargers. They are not a dime a dozen.

There are WiFi 7 routers for 50 USD, and probably you will buy one of them, it is rare that they did not put WiFi 7, or at least as an option with a PCI M2 internal port. In a hardware that is supposed to last.
People probably will plug WiFi 7 routers to that Ethernet port.

Use the Ethernet cable to your own wireless router… preferably with a built in VPN of your choice. IMHO, you don’t want a “mega” powerful WiFi setup in the first place. Someone looking to “break in” to your WiFi is doing so because they can “see” it in the first place. Out of sight, out of mind.

Target Wake Time allows the access point to communicate with a device, instructing it to put the wireless radio to sleep when not in transmission. Devices can determine when their Wi-Fi will be active to send and receive data, thus increasing their sleep time. While this feature may not be convenient for active smartphone users, it is perfect for Internet of Things (IoT) setups that do not require a constant active internet connection with longer-lasting batteries.
Wi-Fi 5 does not have the TWT feature and cannot regulate the extent of power consumption by peripheral devices. Therefore power consumption is higher when using Wi-Fi 5 than Wi-Fi 6.

My thought, it has a lan, so disable the onboard wifi and get a small usb-c powered Wifi 6 pocket router where you need it. Yes, it's small, so put it in a protected sleeve like Star-Mount, mount it to my RV, same SSID/pw as home, poof, no problem. Now wait, what about trees? Now we need to talk injecting power and extension. Should be simple, like perhaps poe+ to the mini to drive it off a POE+ to usb-c or DC power breakout box... convert to Mini's DC and we're golden up to 100m away with the right shielded cables. No need for "special" Starlink cables. Just be sure it's Quality cable you're using with outer shielding and heavy gauge wire for the POE+ support.

So you go camping and pick a spot near a creek and shade.
The nearest clear space that the Mini will work is 250 feet away
    now what?
The WiFi router is built into the Mini-it should have been a removable section with cable from the antenna to the WiFi router. Or, use some kind of technology to make it wireless to the WiFi router in camp.
additionally more than 2 should clip together to double the download when trees drop it to below 10 MB
and its limited to Wi-Fi 5 speeds - who needs downloads faster than 100 MB anyway?
Oh well, the Fan Boys camp is in wide-open spaces and reads really slowly...

The price difference wasn't the issue but going on the roof and bringing down the dish was. We go camping at least twice a month so having the roaming plan would be great. This is brilliant! I'm surprised I did not think of it as it is an obvious design choice.
I generally prefer an external switching power supply vs internal, less heat and a
much easier setup if the switcher fails as the users can replace it themselves. Being DC
with an external supply means you could remote mount this on a handy hill or whatever
to get a better shot at the satellites and use a small solar setup with a lithium battery to
power the device without running any cables! Such an option would work best for those
in warmer areas where snow and ice would not be a drain on the battery while thawing the dish.
The third band at 2.1ghz might be for such a long-range connection where the usual wifi bands
    are in heavy use.

  • @JohnnyLeuthard
    @JohnnyLeuthard 3 месяца назад

I can see where this would be good for travel, off the grid, places where hight speed internet isn't available. But in larger populated areas I would expect seeing slower performance just like a cell service. The more people on it it the more bandwidth is sucked up. For WiFi I'd use a separate router. Something like the GL.iNET is a great option to give you a lot of ways to configure and control less to devices. So Starling with a travel GL.iNET Slate router that has VPN, wireguard and adguard this would be great to pout in an RV, campers, VAN, cabin, off the grid home, etc. But for the general masses I think Starling has a long ways to go before it isn up to the task. I'd also anticipate having the same issues like satellite TV has where bad weather can interfere with reception and quality of service and possibly not having any Internet dairying bad weather. But the Starling network is getting better all the time. Living in Florida I see the rocket launches frequently that have doxxes of more satellites. I just hope Elon Musk doesn't start turning Starling into a political tool where he blocks and controls access to content like he does with X, or Twitter or whatever he wants to call it. I agree how this is a great use case for disaster situations.
