In a rare television appearance, best-selling Harry Potter author JK Rowling sets out to investigate her French roots. Jo has always been intrigued by her late mother's French ancestry, but knows very little about it. Beginning her journey in Edinburgh, Jo's search takes her from The Savoy in London, to once-bloody battlefields and the back streets of urban Paris. Jo is especially keen to find out more about her great grandfather, Louis Volant. She knows that he was awarded one of France's most prestigious medals, the Legion d'honneur, for his actions during World War One. Jo wants to find out exactly what he did to win the honour. The trail leads to a surprising and shocking discovery. Pushing back further into her family tree, Jo discovers an ancestor who triumphed against the odds, despite her inauspicious beginnings, and discovers how a war almost transformed her family's identity forever.

I am happy that JK's ancestor was a hard working person and obtained a better life and some prestige that went with that. Good for her. I wish more people could realize that domestic jobs do not lessen the worth of a person. They are the hardest working people and the most underappreciated people that there ever were and are.

If we have nothing to learn from our Ancestor's we missed the boat.

This ancestor in the picture looks like the aunt that JK visited at the beginning of the show.

I hope they're doing real genealogy off-camera. Finding an isolated record of someone with the same name in the same area at the same time is going to lead one astray more often than not.

They spend thousands of dollars and hours of time researching this show!

@@carokat1111 I accept this explanation. I was just talking about my own personal experience of going down rabbit holes. Assuming a certain name was the same name I was attempting to research.

Turns out I'm a direct descendent of William Blake the famous poet. Just kidding. I'm not. There is no evidence for that but who doesn't like Auguries of Innocence. To see the World in a grain of sand and heaven in a wildflower. Dammit I just made myself cry. Again.

@@curtisblake261 I hear you. People definitely make a lot of assumptions that they've found the right person. I have a Robert Augustus Butterfield born Oct 1836 in Bradford, Uk in my tree. Turns out there were two of them, exact names, birth month and locations. One ended up in India and the other in Australia/New Zealand. Suffice to say, many public family trees are wrong as they've followed the wrong individual.

@@carokat1111 Yep. I run into that problem so many times. People in the same area and possibly in the same family tend to reuse the same names. I just wouldn't go by names when trying to research family history.

I take my hat off to Jo as her entire family have made something of there lives and never gave up if jo hadn’t of continued the family legacy, well there would be no Harry Potter.
