My Dad showed me a a book when I was 14 or 15. I had to sit and be very careful of the book. At the beginning I read an account that said: Great Grandmother McCarthy decided to move the family to America but she missed the boat. Which was a good thing as the USS Virginia was never heard from again. The next passage read that she was now in America. At the time, 50 years ago, I didn't understand that someone wrote that information. The book continued with marriage and birth information. I do not remember reading much and giving the book back to my Dad. Sadly, that book and the family Bible went missing. My sister told me there was a family Bible. I may have seen it at the same time as the other book which was slim and tan. I'm not really sure. However, seeing the Melissa McCarthy RUclips video brought back this memory. My parents died in 2008. Cannot help but wonder about the name changes that often occurred when entering the US and find it interesting that Melissa's grandfather changed his.

Her grandfather would be astounded to hear that he had a granddaughter who would be known throughout the world for her comedic talents. In the moving pictures. It's cool to think that we might be the ancestor to someone who does something extraordinary. Of course, being a good ordinary person is quite an accomplishment too.

Right!! He came to America so that he and his future kids didn’t have to work so hard and kill themselves working like his dad did (and likely his mom after he passed away bc a 1 pay check household was probably ROUGH with 7 children especially bc women didn’t really get that many jobs or high paying jobs back then compared to men) and his future generations of grandchildren are award winning actors!!! That is something to be proud of honestly.

These are such amazing stories. You know, I'm from the USA, but now live in Europe as a language instructor and my students always ask me about DNA tests and why we Americans are so intrigued by them, and I explain that they know exactly where they are from, for generations upon generations. However, people who live in the USA are mostly descendants from other nations around the world, which can leave us longing to know a deeper knowledge of our roots, and where we came from. It's an amazing connection to learn. I would love to know more about where my family bloodline came from and piece together their stories. 🥰

Germany had (and has) much more borders than some countries in the south or north. Changing his name might have been intentional or not. Many Americans had their names changed by the government either to make the spelling easier or because the clerk couldn't spell the name and sometimes as a form of dominance and assimilation/Anglicization.
This channel is great. Many people see history as one big, long continuous story and it's absolutely the opposite. It's so many stories that built communities and cultures and societies and nations.

Love how her name was originally Carty. My Carty's also changed their surname to McCarthy, most of the family ended up going to the USA with my ancestors mum after the father must have died. Mine was the only sibling to come to Australia. I totally get what she means with keeping everyone together, the diaspora sent our ancestors in all directions

Melissa's grandfather likely didn't change his name to McCarthy, he probably change it back to McCarthy. Originally the name was likely always McCarthy (Mac Cárthaigh in Irish), but many people dropped the "Mc" or the "O" from their name to make it sound more anglicized. Ireland was colonized by England at that time and people would have a better chance of employment if their name didn't sound Irish.

This was quite a revelation. Since Melissa's surname is of Irish origin, I had assumed her ancestry was Irish all the way back. She even looks a bit Irish. I wouldn't have imagined that she had a Scots ancestor who changed his name from Carty to McCarthy. There is a McCarty surname that originates in County Cork. And McCarthy is not an uncommon surname in Scotland, particularly in Glasgow, where many Irish have settled over the last two centuries.

my biological great grandfather George Crawford immigrated to America when he was young from Scotland and married my great grandmother who was from Nova Scotia, Canada. He was violent and almost killed my great Grandma and their children (my grandma and her siblings) ended up in foster care. I don't know anything more about him but I would love to find some Scottish records on him and hopefully one day trace my Scottish roots as well.
