Which is weird because anyone who bought a Wii U knows it was a great console.
If calling it the "Wii U" really cost it sales and made people think it was a add on to the Wii..
If it wasn't for the Wii U
The switch wouldn't be what it is today.
      They didn't change much
Just made the tablet/console a combined portable unit.
The games on the Wii U got ported to switch or were used as a basis for optimizing future games.
      The Wii U started Amiibos.
There really isn't much difference from the Wii U and switched

@Vexzel It wasn't a great console. The Gamepad gimmick was poorly thought-out, which was a huge problem when the entire system was built around it, so they couldn't just ditch it or sell it separately. They then had to make games to justify it, and most of those games did not do a good job of justifying it - either because the gamepad integration was extremely superficial, or because it absolutely sucked and the game would have been better off without it.
The Wii U had some great games, but it wasn't great as a machine.

The reason why they won't do the plus-shaped D-pad is because you need the face buttons on each controller half. The left JoyCon on its own needs to function as an individual controller in its own right.

I think they'll stick with the Switch format, as they usually did with the portables. We had GameBoy and then GameBoy Advance; later we had Nintendo DS and then Nintendo 3DS. So I think we may expect an evolution of the formula in this case.
I also think that they still haven't explored the possibilities of having actual hardware in the dock. We could have some "modular" approach, with somekind of more powerful hardware being activated in the dock for the more demanding graphics that people want to see in big screens, and for portable mode we carry along a somewhat modest hardware that gets the job done. I don't know, but I would expect the dock playing a bigger role if they decide to evolve the Switch concept.

The + D-pad being absent in favor of 4 separate buttons is because of the gimmick of using each joycon on its side as its own controller. That way, the arrow buttons can also function as ABXY.

Everyone out here trying to 'correct you' about the dpad comment, but here's what I'd love to see: Nintendo should just sell a separate left joycon that has a proper dpad on it, so you don't have to modify the shell yourself. The detachable joycons are mainly a gimmick that very few games take proper advantage of. The gimmick is important to help sell the console to kids (parents) and to brand new gamers, but if they gave more serious gamers the option to reduce the impact of that gimmick on their long term play experience I think it would be taken positively (even though its literally selling back a removed feature).
Plus, even Nintendo knows that the dpad is better for games that don't need full joycon functionality, because both the pro controller and the switch lite have one.

The thing I really want to see on Nintendo's next console (in addition to the expected hardware refresh) is being able to cast to the TV while it's in handheld mode, essentially pulling a reverse Wii U.
It can be backwards and forwards compatible. (can be used in the Switch dock and Switch can be used in its dock, just need both for the casting feature to work)
It opens up a path to Wii U and DS emulation.
And maybe some of those Wii U projects that were shelved due to low sales can be resurrected. (like that fully complete unreleased Ubisoft party game)
All they gotta do is not fuck up the name again like with the Wii U. (I firmly believe the biggest problem it had was its name. People just didn't understand it was a whole new console and not just a tablet controller peripheral for the Wii.)

    Nintendo switch deluxe

  • @tomnookyankees3761
    @tomnookyankees3761 Год назад +11

I would say that the switch successor will likely need the following:
    1) The window for a small specs bump was 2021 when they were originally planning on releasing a Switch Pro. The insider info points to them not releasing new hardware until 2024 at which point Gen 9 (PS5/XSX) development will be standard among AAA devs such that while they aren't going to need hardware that is Gen 9 powerful they will need to something around PS4 Pro powerful in order to make it easy for devs to port games to the switch successor. They would still likely miss out on some key AAA titles but enough AAA games would still get ported to switch and the vast majority of indie games would easily get ported to switch so they wouldn't be too lacking in third party support.
    2) Vastly improved online/app infrastructure. It's 2023 the fact that nintendo's online service is still lacking compared to online that Xbox Live provided back in the 360 era is unacceptable. To make matters even worse, their NSO and E-Shop apps constantly lag and the switch is lacking media apps that even its predecessors had. Part of this has more to do with investing in better online servers but releasing new hardware is the best opportunity to introduce a completely revamped and improved online/app system.
    3) Improved Joy Cons. Assuming they are sticking with a similar control setup as the switch, there is still tons of room to vastly improve the Joycons such as making them bigger and/or thicker so they are easier to grip, put tingthe infrared camera on the front to better/driftless pointer controls possible, changing the analog sticks so they are less vulnerable to dust buildup and stick drift, and underside buttons which are standard in controllers these days.
Also nintendo can't go back to directly competing with Sony and Microsoft on hardware because that would require selling hardware at a loss which Nintendo can't do when they don't have non-gaming sectors to absorb gaming sector losses like Sony and Microsoft have.

@@mk8-mkwil117 The Gamecube wasn't a failure, the PS2 was just that good. Comparable specs, had backwards compatibility with PS1, and could play DVDs.
Not to mention PS2 had a stellar line up of exclusives like the Silent Hill games, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, God of War, etc. The PS2 was just THE console for the hack & slash genre during the early-mid 2000s among other genres like JRPGs and horror, whereas Xbox was able to coast by with Halo 2 online multiplayer and got to enjoy ports for games like Half Life 2 and Doom 3.
Gamecube _had_ third party exclusives, though, no one was really keen on games like RE4 being on "the baby console." Its a stigma that's existed towards Nintendo consoles as far back as the Genesis Does What Nintendon't campaign, and its never really gone away. Even nowadays people still look at Nintendo as the family friendly option, even though Bayonetta is literally a first party Nintendo IP. Nintendo could acquire fucking Doom or NieR and the Switch would still be the kids console because their mascot is the funny wahoo man.

The dock clocks it up to 120fps, but it only reaches 4k through scaling

This would be waaaaaaay easier to take around to other places than the Switch Dock and I'm certain the technology is possible since we have several air play and screen mirroring devices already. Plus this could potentially make it easier to connect to nearby Switches since everyone could just connect to the Switch Hub (it'd still have online capabilities, this would just be if multiple people with multiple Switches wanted to connect with each other on the big screen or something idk).
Extra side note I think it'd be hilarious if they did this if they also added Mario as an Alexa feature. "Hey Mario, send an invite to Joe to play Mario Kart." "Okie dokie!"

Then in handheld you would have dual screens like the DS and 3DS, in docked one screen could be docked and display to your TV while the other stays connected to your Joycons. You could also potentially have multiplayer setups where your friend could have one screen in addition to one Joycon in multiplayer. That would probably be the ideal way to handle this. By the way, Nvidia checked in last year the drivers for a new SoC (CPU + GPU combination) that is likely the basis for the next generation Switch.
It runs with 8 Cortex-A76AE cores and its GPU has 4 TFLOPS of compute.
The CPU is likely to be 2.5 times as strong as the current one at the same clockspeed. If they go for 4 cores and double the clockspeed compared to what we have now we’re looking at a 5x CPU performance. If 8 cores it’d be 10x.
The full GPU is 2.5x the Steam Deck or 10x the current Switch. If they go for half size, it would still be 1.25x Steam Deck or 5x current Switch.
A very large increase in computing power is coming, and that is because the smartphone industry made the mobile CPUs the most innovative field with huge year-on-year improvements. On the Switch we would get 6-7 years of those improvements at once.
A first generation Samsung Galaxy S, a Samsung Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S22 are so far apart in performance that they’re completely incomparable.

    1. It wont' have the word "Switch" in it anywhere. Nintendo learned a marketing lesson with the Wii U and how the name can confuse possible customers.
    2. It's going to still be a hybrid portable/home console.
    3. It will continue to use cartridges simply because of that portable aspect.
    4. It will likely have a bigger screen, likely OLED. Say a 7 inch screen that will allow Nintendo to fix the biggest flaw in the Switch - the tinyness of the Joy Cons.
    5. It will remain backwards compatible.
    6. Likely 4k? That is a question.
    7. It's gonna have roughly the power of a PS4/Xbox One. This allows a step up in graphics but keep the cost low and will allow developers to use chip sets they understand already,.
    Beyond that I don't know.

I am going to be real I think that raw power in a switch style format would be the Correct move for nintendo. not the one they will necessarily take, but for the first time in a long time there is legitimate competition in the handheld market. Nintendo have been able to coast for years basically since the end of the PSPs lifespan as the vita... never did as well as it could. 3DS was basically uncontested for its lifespan, Switch has been uncontested for 5 years, and relaistically while the PSP sold better than the DS did, the DS was a much more Iconic machine and was more influential.
But now, with the Steam deck, there is some legitimate competition in the marketplace, and outside of Nintendo purism the Steam deck makes a compelling arguments. the newest Tripple A games, in a handheld form factor, with the added ability to play basically every nintendo game, Plus switch games, through emulation (ASSUMING YOU DUMP YOUR OWN ROMS) with perfomance better than naitive switch in many cases. I am not saying the steam deck is going to "kill" nintendo, but what its launch and success has shown is that nintendo is no longer alone in this marketplace and that they do need to compete now.
my gut feeling is that nintendo will truck along regardless, and as time goes on other manufacturers will bring out other steam-deck like products (we are allready seeing it but these are much less notable machines than the steam deck), either in the steamdeck style of a Handheld gaming PC, or an actual all-in-one Handheld consol like the switch. and honestly I think nintendo might have backed themselves into a corner with the switch, because I dont know what other gimmics they can fall back on when other consoles like it come out.

I think it will 100% keep the Switch name to some extent, especially so they don't have to rename the online service when it inevitably gets carried over lol. Seriously, though, as annoying as it is that Online is a subscription service instead of online play being a free thing like earlier consoles, it is kinda nice that they could just make the NSO apps backwards compatible and not have to worry about affectively rebuilding the Virtual Console again. Plus, saving your save data to the cloud would make it a lot easier to carry over a large majority of your saves to the new console (some games like Pokemon are exceptions for obvious reasons). No need to download apps like you did to transfer from Wii to Wii U, since NSO is tied to the *Nintendo Account*, not the console, and it could potentially work in TWO directions instead of just one, meaning any progress you make on the "Super Nintendo Switch" could be transferred back to the original Switch, as long as the game is compatible with both. Funnily enough, with that possibility, you could potentially have a dedicated portable again if you keep your old Switch.

    My prediction
    1. 5G will be added, there won't be a browser but more so is for online only games like pokemon unite be actually portable too.
2.power will be a on par with a ps4 pro in terms of power, but the actual handheld is still 720p and 1080p native dock, with DLSS is the way they achieve 4K.
Simply to just enable current only gen games too kinda be playable on switch like the supposed upcoming call of duties.
    3. The gimmick will be a new pro controller, not the actual switch, but the gimmick is gonna be more gamecube controller than wii remote.

With compatibility it's probably smartest to do what Microsoft and Sony are doing right now. Make the Switch 2 backwards compatible with the Switch and continue to make games that are compatible with the Switch but play at higher resolution modes on Switch 2. This means the Switch 2, like Xbox Series & PS5, will mostly be a specs boost.
The Switch as it is is basically the perfect mobile console except it's way too underpowered for 2023. Fix the stick drift. Maybe make a larger 8 inch screen model that can push 1080p or 1440p portably & 4K docked. Use a much more modern chipset but stick with ARM. Maybe include a microphone & camera. Maybe even make said camera stick up through the dock so that it would be possible to implement into motion games while docked Kinect style.

About that foldable thing, none of what you said makes sense.
Obviously they'd have new games utilize the bottom screen as a separate screen like the DS did and for backwards compatibility they'd have games only display at the top with the bottom being black thanks to OLED.

You don't even need magnetic sticks they just have to use the same software they used during ps2/GameCube days those system didn't have drift because they used proper software, they used something called zeroing where the center was wherever the joystick was when the console turned on, I have no clue why they stopped using that

I think the new switch should stick with 720p screen. the steam deck is 720p (800p technically). I think the screen isn't big enough where 1080p would be much of a benefit, and a lower rez allows games to have better framerates and graphics as well as improving battery life. So I personally hope it stays at 720p undocked. Also while I highly doubt it would do native 4k docked, maybe it could have some upscaling technology like dlss or fsr or whatever. maybe this tech could even be built into the dock rather than the tablet

Definitely don't like the Switch d-pad myself but it does make sense given the individual nature of the controllers. A single joy-con being used sideways for multiplayer, having individual buttons to represent the face buttons makes more sense than a d-pad would. That said, using a single joy-con sucks anyways. But I understand why they went with that design ultimately.

Switch is a perfect balance of at home and handheld, and I think if they abandon the switch library it would be a horrible mistake, Nintendo finally has a good library of 3rd party games coming in, relying on 1st party was bad why the Wii u failed.
Controller wise the joycons are alright definitely needs a traditional d-pad and maybe a little thickness to the back of the remote for grip

It is kind of strange how they don't sell a barebones switch with no dock (but has the capability to dock later) for a reasonable price. Something switch lite doesn't do. I mean take the OLED for example you can literally get a steam deck which has modern hardware and a huge library for the same price as a 6 year old console suffering from being absurdly outdated at this point.

Main things switch2 should have is metal sticks on the joy cons that have full motion range and then use a 7inch screen or slightly bigger and needs to be more powerful for sure and have full backwards compatibility with the orginal and when it comes to the dock it definitely needs to be thicker and heavy so it's not so easily knocked over and should increase the power when it's docked by a good amount and they should introduce a better way to dock it screens have gotten scratched and it can be difficult at times to put it on the connector perfect but since I personally would like to see a bigger dock I think they should add a disc drive for the wii/wiiu/gc backwards compatibility with 4 controller ports for gamecube that way there is more incentive to actually buy a new switch because just a more powerful switch may not be enough for the people who play on it to want to buy a new one like people like me who love their gamecube wii and wiiu should have backwards compatibility options like that available for the games they refuse to remaster
