    > I DIDN'T FORGET THE SATURN! this isn’t meant to be a comprehensive list of all console startups/menus. i mainly wanted to focus on the Big Three™ and added in the dreamcast later on because i thought it was relevant enough. i didn’t want to go too obscure with the consoles i chose. i wasn't aware of the saturn while researching, and assumed it was just a CD player with nothing more. i apologize that i didn't look more into it, but i didn't want to focus too much on it
    > the og xbox ambience voice isn’t SAM, the software automatic mouth, but is various random cuts of the apollo missions to the moon
    > the xbox one and series x dashboards overlap. i didn't know about it, i am a nintendo/playstation guy, but i still feel that it was necessary to differentiate where the series x was introduced
    > the 360 came out in 2005. i'd always thought it released alongside the ps3, but i was completely wrong. apologies for that, my confidence grew too big when scriptwriting

Fun fact: The system settings in the wii menu is an entirely separate program to the regular main menu
It's actually a locked down version of the opera web browser (the web browser that would be put on the wii shop channel a year after launch), that's why wii boxes on day one have an opera logo on them, even though they didn't have any web browser for another year.
The reason it takes a second to load the wii settings is because it's booting up opera web browser to load the HTML files that change the settings.

In terms of home consoles, the Wii U menu is for sure my favourite. The music was both catchy and relaxing, and it genuinely felt like a fun place to be. However, my favourite menu ever has to be the 3DS. The sheer amount of personality provided by the banners on the menu prior to launching the game was incredible, and the system has the best activity log of any system I’ve ever used. The 3DS’s music was also amazing.

The blades with the original Xbox 360 boot logo was the best combination for the Xbox 360. Also all the system sounds are slightly different each time its booted and the whooshing waves in the background are randomized. It's honestly a work of art.

For me the most fun was going trough the endless setting menu as a kid.
Like that settings menu had it all. Like you're going to let me attach random HID devices.
I would also just trow every CD and DVD into the PS3. Like let's see what a PC rom game does. O i can actually just read the files on the disk lol.

awesome video!!!! loved it!! i'm gonna ramble about the menus too because i like those too
xbox 360's metro theme is the most memorable to me, but when it changed that one day when i wanted to boot up minecraft i was SUPER confused and i'm pretty sure i wanted to go back to the old one lol, had a play with an xbox series X once and menu confused me for like 3 minutes but it was fine at the end of the run
the wii is amazing, the ambience was lovely, the settings weren't too difficult on my end, got to experience mario kart wifi for a little bit whilst that was still kicking. i had no idea how the mail worked but it was fun seeing the game time info pop up and i loved the built-in channels
the wii u deserves more and the menu proves it, i love EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, the top screen having the miis, the bottom screen's incredible design, didn't the internet browser have that curtains thing?? that was awesome, settings were confusing but i got the hang of it. the music is HEAVENLY and i wish that the nintendo switch...
..the nintendo switch menu is boring. i wish it wasn't that. points for getting right to the action and not wasting time, but DAMN THIS NEEDS TO BE _IMPROVED_ i need FUNNY MUSIC WHILST MAKING MY MII. the nintendo switch menu is a CORPSE next to the other menus and i wish next time's more in-line with the others. again though, big plus for just getting right to the point, but big minus for no music. the recently introduced stuff make the menu more fun though i like that
the DSI's music is, like the wii u and wii beforehand, heavenly. makes you really wanna take a look around the menu even though there's barely anything there, the picture being at the top is nice too :] the 3ds was super awesome i really like that (i like the mario theme)

The Wii is my nostalgia pill. It was the best years of my gaming life, and that's saying something since I'm in my late 30s.
I honestly think the people who hated it (that's a thing lost to modern narratives: the Wii was VERY divisive for early Nintendo fans) and moved onto other consoles just REALLY liked 3rd party games more than Nintendo games. "Remember when Nintendo made REAL games like Contra, Castlevania, Chrono Trigger, and TMNT Turtles In Time??" I'm not kidding, those were the kind of arguments being shouted during that era. As a JRPG fan, I can understand their sentiment... But the Wii gave us Xenoblade Chronicles, which... most people didn't play (another thing lost to the modern narrative: Xenoblade Chronicles was VERY niche at the time because all JRPG lovers owned SONY products instead).
But for me, the Wii got me back into gaming. It melded with what I wanted gaming to be (an extension to life, not an escape from it). So that really bright shining part of my life is very much cherished, making it the most nostalgic.
But the Wii U... The Wii U is my favorite in concept.
I love the console, and still play it to this day, and the games I have for it are awesome (one of the few Xenoblade Chronicles X owners)... But... It doesn't have many, especially when compared to the Wii. It could have been so much more, having so much more potential.
But it was a disaster. Just... Not in the way the modern narrative tells it.
The console was sabotaged, and the people who cared to dig into games journalism at the time knew it.
Nintendo, with the success of the Wii, wanted to welcome back in the audience that left them during the Wii years (the gamer crowd) and meld them with the casual crowd, making a console "for everyone". So how do you get the gamers back? 3rd parties... But what most people didn't realize at this time, was that 3rd parties, specifically their publishers, started ruining the industry in an attempt to sieze full control of it.
By heavy pressure from 3rd parties, Nintendo scaled back their releases to leave room for 3rd party releases (who all complained that they didn't release on Nintendo consoles because Nintendo games always "stole their sales" - that's another thing lost in the modern narrative: 3rd parties actively disliked Nintendo back then. Look at the releases from SNES to Switch. Between the N64 and the Wii U, there was a DROUGHT of 3rd party support). But the 3rd parties who promised exclusives for it, delayed their games and released them on other consoles (Deus Ex being the biggest example). Other 3rd parties were just straight up bought out from releasing their games on it. Others barely tried (like BioWare releasing Mass Effect 3 on it, when no Nintendo-only fan played 1 or 2... then releasing the Mass Effect Trilogy just MONTHS LATER on every console BUT the Wii U). And the few 3rd parties that remained with genuine releases whined on social media against Nintendo and their audience (which was strangely VERY unprofessional and would not be tolerated in this day and age).
Then there were gaming journalists... Which young ones don't realize: still had a LOT of control over people's purchases during this era. Game journalists trashed the Wii U to no end because Nintendo was the only company not bribing them for good reviews (not an exaggeration). This was when several Nintendo news sites came into existence, because major gaming news outlets stopped announcing news for Nintendo products. The gaming journalists only talked about the obvious, just so they wouldn't seem biased (despite putting out news for trivial things for other consoles). Honestly, most RUclips influencers' opinions for the Wii U? Was directly affected by gaming journalism.
Even GameFreak (people these days have FINALLY started understanding that they act more like a 3rd party than a 2nd party company to Nintendo. And for those who are still in denial: Pokémon is more popular than Mario, and that fact alone CARRIES A LOT in business decisions) pulled out and instead made another 3DS title, which was unheard of (they release a mainline title ONCE per console). The Wii U game they had in development? Moved to the Switch. You can clearly see this in Let's Go's design, which makes more sense on the Wii U than the Switch (two players is stupid on the Switch, but makes perfect sense with the Wii U's Gamepad. Wii U's Gamepad also was better built for NFC (the Pokéball) than the Switch joy-con. And most obviously: the height of Pokémon Go's popularity was during the Wii U's years, NOT the Switch's). One could even argue Pokémon Snap was originally developed for the Wii U, but that lacks enough evidence.
And the fact that it was a sinking ship made even Nintendo back out of their own major Wii U releases (Animal Crossing got gutted mid-development, breaking it apart and spreading its corpse into multiple games: New Leaf's major DLC, Happy Home Designer, and Amiibo Festival... Ever wonder why New Horizons was so poorly optimized and lacking in features? Because they were forced to start from SCRATCH and had to RUSH for the Switch, instead of typically having 5+ years of development - and let's not talk about the Mario Tennis game (which feels very much like a dropped project that was greenlit into release)).
The only success they could have had at this point was with casuals. But their naming (Wii U), and marketing geared more towards gamers, confused the casuals.
Nintendo's leniency (for 3rd parties, game journalists, their own partners, etc) during that era was their downfall.
And all people took from it due to RUclips influencers was "Lol Gamepad, Lol Star Fox".
Because of that, the Wii U floundered... But it had so much potential to be Wii 2.0.
So despite it never living up to that promise... I still favor the little guy.
Miiverse was a wild ride. The events Nintendo held during this era was top-notch. Nintendo Directs started here. The most meme-able moments of Nintendo came from this era. The best Nintendo merch released during this era (outclassing the Switch-era merch in almost every way). Some of the biggest RUclips names started here as Nintendo content creators. Being a Nintendo fan during this era was NOT miserable, it was EXTREMELY FUN to be a Nintendo fan during this era. Arguably, moreso than the Switch's era. Because more than any other era: Nintendo was actively interacting with its community. But being a grumpy Nintendo fan who only cared to play games (never participating in events, never joining communities, never actively being a part of what Nintendo was putting out during that era): yeah, i can see why people could be "miserable" during that time.
For its promise and everything surrounding it (events, social media, merch, etc), the Wii U is very much beloved. Plus, Splatoon 1 > Splatoon 2. Play the Story mode of both titles (you can even throw in OctoPass just to be sure). If you're able to, play multiplayer matches on both. You'll notice that the only thing Splatoon 2's got going for it is balancing and sheer volume of options. Splatoon 1 still stomps it in controls (much more precise gyro) and fun.
And, of course, its menu is awesome. Definitely an evolution of the Wii's.
Too bad it never fully became it was supposed to be.

I own a Nintendo Switch, and an Xbox 360, which is modded, and also the newer model. I use my 360 quite rarely, but the startup is nice. As for the Nintendo Switch, I do not have a startup sound. I don’t know if it’s like a US-only type of thing, or only V1 Switches had the startup sound, with the red screen and that sound. But as for the sound effects on the home menu, they are heavenly. My personal favorites are the eShop’s, and the Sleep Mode’s sound effects. There was a planned main menu music, but it got removed near launch. Would’ve been lovely though.

Fun fact: As far as I know, you cannot have a custom menu theme for the PlayStation 5 like you can for the PlayStation 4. Why? I have no idea. Visual and audio wise the menu look and function very similarly to each other.
I own both PS4 and PS5 and got my PlayStation 5 from a Meijer in-person and in the store, not the website. Scalpers can sell stuff on the website.
Also, for both PS4 and PS5, if you hover over a game a looping or non-looping audio from the game in question will play but is not a thing for all games.

Something I havent seen anyone mention is that with the Wii U home screen, you can make those Miis run around by rotating the apps, if you repeatedly switch it the miis will get tired! I always loved that. I also loved the sound of all of their little stomps when getting in place for the main screen lol
