Love how you talk about these 2 watches. I own both and they're both works of art for different reasons. AP Royal oak is for the man who wears jeans t-shirt and a sports jacket. Nautilus feels more at home in a suit and matching cufflinks. One a oil billionaires watch, the other a billionaire ceo of fortune 500 company. It's world's apart and yet the same. Well done, Watchfinder. Your videos are pure joy to watch.

Aiden Brantley Well I am jealous! I’m just starting out on this journey and don’t have anywhere near the amount of money it would take to buy either one. I definitely see your point about lifestyle and finding the watch that works for you specifically. I wouldn’t ever consider selling the Nautilus either if I were you!
I would choose by far a Parmigiani "qualité Fleurier", a far better watch, movement and finish than both AP and PP and certainly more reasonably priced than the rip off prices we now see for those 2 brands.
@@dcdeluxe5687 Perhaps, but it will never be as iconic as either of these. Finding a unique case shape aesthetic is perhaps the easiest path toward icon status (Reverso, Royal Oak, Nautilus). Even Bvlgari caught on to the concept with the finissimo.

Weirdly, even though when side by side they really do look amazingly similar, I hate the nautilus and I love the royal oak. I would love some day to own a white gold royal oak.
Another joy to look and listen to. These watches represent a philosophy I hate, an object made to be expensive and bought by people BECAUSE it's expensive to show the world you can afford something waaaaay overpriced for what it is. Now with that said, I would still buy them if I could afford them, only for a different reason than what their initial idea was, because they are STUNNING!!! I love watching these videos for the sheer joy of the narrator's voice and choice of words. Outstanding and elegantly spoken, like a poetry recital! You, sir, are an artist.
The Nautilus has something akin to a sense of humor about it. The porthole latch, old-style TV shaped dial, bulbous features... it's silly, yet incredibly refined. If there's one thing rich people (who are generally older) crave, it's more time. And when something is silly, it seems youthful, and something youthful seems like there's plenty of time left. Time giving time, as it were. The AP is a fantastic watch in its own right, but a close second (watch puns vol. 2) to the Patek when of a certain age/mindset. It's just not as joyous. With its sharp, aggressively angular design, it seems to be more structured towards the taste of the successful person looking to stay sharp* and "really make it," whereas the Patek is for the person who has more monetary success than is reasonably desired, and is now trying to advance on other, more emotional fronts. That's my, reading-too-much-into-it take on these two legends. Both with their own strengths, and only better than the other in different times of one's life. I would like both pls send
Thank you for the video. Putting them side by side, to me, PP Nautilus is more "smooth" and understated; AP Royal Oak with the screws on the bezel, the comparatively bigger "AP" logos, the rather complicated links on the bracelet, is "louder".
Absolutely brilliant. I believe it has less to do with the actual timepiece itself and more of its housing. It seems he took a look at something that people were probably not thinking about. How to keep water out and make it look good at the same. Instead of how to make a good looking watch and then make it waterproof.
I’d love to know how much each of these watches cost to make in materials and man hours. Interesting to hear the history behind the design and what the two brands were trying to achieve. They’re both amazing but the price is outrageous. Out of my price range
I see in the comments that some guys are saying that the markers at 12 are not aligned if you look at 2:08 and i would like to add a few things. The font also looks a little bit different. If you look close enough at the A at pAtek, you will see that the gap at the “top triangle” of the letter is bigger when compared to other 5711. The markers also look a little bit too sharp, i think they look a little bit smoother on the other dials... We can be wrong, and it can be a difference between production years, but it should definitely be checked. And if it is a fake, I honestly don’t blame anyone who got fooled by it ( if anyone actually got fooled ). But anyway, keep up the good work guys!
Keep in mind, both designs have been utilized in many different designs. The AP reflects from Baume Mercier Riviera and Hublot, up to the Vacheron overseas. The Patek is a traditional television design which is much more common in early Seiko, Bulova through to some fairly high end manufacturers. But for me the AP is a more accepted design in a high end watch. That of course if your buying only one and you desire a sport/luxury look.
The luck of the draw comes from how these two brands tapped into a human characteristic that has been there all along : the need to project a higher image of one's self. Once quartz watches appeared, mechanical watches, objectively, should've become obsolete. If you think about it, mechanical watches do seem quaint and antiquated. But brilliantly and luckily for these two watch makers, there are people who wanted to stick to tradition and, given the much higher prices of mechanicals, gave people, almost instantly, a status symbol. As if they are, by wearing these mechanical watches, saying, "Oh you got one of those newfangled quartz watches? Good thing they're cheap, now you could afford a watch. As for us, we'd rather stick with our mechanical watches because, you know, we have always been able to afford them."
love both and a year ago would of said 5711, but these days lean more to ro (specifically 15202). big part of that is that the ro bracelet is imo perfection- the very best on any watch. i also have come to appreciate the overall more agressive styling of the ro. 5711 is very soft and bubbly (and very nice). i do prefer the nautilus dial though- not a big fan of the ap one. both great pieces.
p.s. the greatest travesty afflicting both these pieces is the inclusion of that horrendous afterthought date complication. yuck! pp incorporates it better, but still horrible.
I’m a 22yr old college student and over the last 3 years I started getting into watches. I bought 2 Seiko’s in 2019, then a Tag Heuer in 2021, and just got my first Rolex Datejust two tone rose gold. I hope to be able to get an AP Royal Oak before I graduate!
My two favorite ones ever. Hopefully one day I have enough money to purchase at least one of them. It's strange how I can feel them already without touching them or seeing them in person.
There was a third in the 1980's and 90's the IWC Genta designed Ingeniuer. It has s similar bezel and used the same movement , the JLC 88X but the IWC added a soft iron cage to make is antimagnetic and a shock absorbing ring to make it more rugged with platinum rimmed rotor in a more comfortable watch. It has the same style integral bracelet and is a very comfortable watch to wear.
Gerald Genta is a freaking genious. He designed both of these watches and they are popular decades later. I prefer vintage gold watches, but these 2 designs are astronomically awesome I'd have one if I could afford it lol.
Both are obscenely over priced...but that has become their allure. It does not really matter much how good the watch is, but how expensive it is. And that defines 95% of its value. By the 1970s a new class of rich folks were emerging around the world, and over spending on watches was just one way to show off their wealth...and to try and buy respectability. The more these brands overcharge, the more that they are adored.
As an owner of an AP and Patek, and former owner of several Rolexes, the quality of these watches are incredible. Looking at pictures won't do any justice. Handle them in person and you will understand. I'm way more offended by a $12k Omega that looks like it was entirely made by machines.
4th &Vance electronics are great but they do perish rather quickly. They are disposable. These watches, even if overpriced, are mechanical wonders that last through generations
There are extremely good replicas of these watches that can be bought for $400 and you couldnt tell the difference unless you open the watch up or are an absolute expert . And the difference is usually the font. The watches look and feel the same. And you might say that not true but they do and rolex has seen this as such a threat that they have been changing the watch trying to make it harder to copy but they still do. The thing is with revolution in technology these companies in china have access to extremely advanced and high end machines. Whats funny is the Swiss actually use to make counterfeit pocket watches of the better American ones.
On the Royal Oak all the little details, like the impossible screws or the bracelet links, are simply beautiful. On the Nautilus every form and angle look off.
Nomos glashütte deserves a review. Now on the basis of premise that today's automatic watch industry is revived out of chance, what made this relatively new company in this tech savvy era to pop up and produce mechanical watches?
I think the screws on the AP are not misaligned, their slits are perpendicular to the radius of the dial. One screw and its diagonal opposite are simmetrical.
I’m currently saving up for a royal oak as my grail watch even though I use a regular old Apple Watch for my day to day watch needs the royal oak is just so elegant to me
@@foretell6819dumb at your age. You should "come into money" when buying a watch like this e.g. you sold your business, got a huge bonus at work, etc. If you need to save for a 30-50k+ watch, you can't afford it. That money should be invested or put into buying a home.
The Royal oak is my every day watch and trust me i had the nautilus 6yrs ago but its not robust enough like the royal oak it just lacks that every day quality
Absolutely The "BEST REVIEW" On You Tube For A Condensed History Of Watches ... So much info on horology presented, I had to watch it twice ... Is your astute analysis based on years of collecting & years of reading on the history of watches ... Or do you recommend one book that encapsulates it all the way you did in the video ? One need not be able to afford these two luxury excessively priced timepieces to learn & appreciate the history & craftsmanship that went into their making. Major Jim, USMC
Actually the 15300 is theoretically the competitor of Nautilus 5711. They haven't got the monobloc case and istead of the "historichal" ultra-thin JLC 920 caliber. both of them have in-house movement. Basically, both these AP and PP are different watch compared to original Jumbo versions. In my opinion, focusing solely on the price tag is not the best way to compare overprised luxury watch like these. That's why RO 15202 in steel has no substitute in current watch industry of luxury steel watches. Obviously if Watchfinder compared any ref. of RO Jumbo with the PP 3711 the story could be different. Anyway, from left to right there are at least 15k euro of difference in terms of Street price, and the current Nautilus 5711 doesn't even have a bracelet with screws...
Great channel!! Just subscribed. As of this video: Nobody mentions the IWC Ingeneur and Omega Constellation, also by Genta. I would appreciate your comments on having the four compared. Cheers!
Get a homage. If you for 2500 USD you can get a PELTON American made with Swiss movement. And for less than 100 USD you can get a Chinese watch from didun/sekaro With great finishing quality and Japanese movement
I absolutely love your videos! Beautiful time pieces! I am curious, are you by chance the narrator for the movie, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events? Lol
Both watches were original and bold in their day, but to me they look very dated from the 1970s. If the exact same designs were sold by a modestly priced company, no one would have given them the time of day, and they would most probably have been discontinued years ago, like bell bottoms and huge lapels. There is nothing like a REALLY BIG PRICE to make a mediocrity suddenly seem like the greatest object in the world.
It's not hard to simply copy the shape of these watches but the precision that goes into their manufacturing is not something anyone can do. How much are they to make? That's a secret that is closely guarded. Are they worth $40,000 then? Probably not but if you buy a Patek you're buying much more than the cost of materials and cost of manufacturing. Yes I know it's kinda nuts but that's how the world works, man.
Congratulations you people understand the concept of products and how they need to sell more than they cost. Maybe try understanding exactly what goes into these watches and youll have a good idea or how much they are “actually worth”. Maybe their older classic design isn’t supposed to appeal to you, marketing 101, understand?
Seeing these watches side by side in photos/videos and in person is a very different story. I used to prefer the Royal Oak when I saw it in videos, but when I did get a chance to see both these watches in person, i was surprised by how much more elegant the Nautilus is, although to be fair I saw a steel Royal Oak being compared to a rose gold 5711

@@MultiAlliot I love it
The level of skill and professionalism displayed in your videos it is just...superlative. You guys are the ''Holy Grail'' of watch reviews.
REPLY
Long, long, long time ago, before I was into watches and had any idea what it is, I fell in love with the Nautilus
I'm way more offended by a $12k Omega that looks like it was entirely made by machines.
kaunas888 what you said, and neither one keeps better time than a cell phone
A Honda Civic gets me to the grocery store just fine but I'd much rather be in a Rolls Royce. To each their own.
Great vid. AP will be my next piece.
AP all day !!
At 2:08 on the Patek it looks like the two 12 hour markers are not aligned?
Wereld van Morgen noticed that too
Indeed, they are not.
that's because homeboy is using a replica.....
nobravenewworld hk. Yes seems like it. And if not, I would definitely advise the owner to get it fixed by the dealer.
ye its prolly fake
I’m currently saving up for a royal oak as my grail watch even though I use a regular old Apple Watch for my day to day watch needs the royal oak is just so elegant to me
I’m attempting to do the same. Any tips? I’m relatively younger but by the age of 25 I would love to own one. I’ll save up an amount every year
@@foretell6819dumb at your age. You should "come into money" when buying a watch like this e.g. you sold your business, got a huge bonus at work, etc.
If you need to save for a 30-50k+ watch, you can't afford it. That money should be invested or put into buying a home.
Nautilus any day of the week.
Chris
The Sterns are no better than diamond-dealers.
Its like two best friends talking to each other.
The Royal oak is my every day watch and trust me i had the nautilus 6yrs ago but its not robust enough like the royal oak it just lacks that every day quality
You're joking right.
I really like these videos, but I do wish you'd synchronize the second hands when comparing watches.
I like the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 49150 chrono the best for a holy trinity sports watch.
The 5711 has to be my favourite watch ever, if I can bring myself to justify buying it, on day, I'll get it!
5:19 Who was trying to change the bands with a $0.99 screwdriver !? 🤔🤦🏻♂️ look at the screws !!
Well spotted
Shit!
In picture, the AP looks better but in real life the PP is looks much better but it should since it is twice the price of the AP
So glad worked up to the point where I actually get to choose one of these legendary watches. And happy to announce will be getting a AP.
Great video indeed.
I kept looking at each watch for 3 seconds at a time, trying to figure out which looks better. They are both amazing.
They're both super tiny.
Could you do a review of the Grand Seiko versus Swiss-made counterparts? I heard it’s a pretty decent timepiece. Thanks!
Not even that into watches but this was nice info pack! Well made!
If you really want an expensive luxury watch, then go for Omega. My dad bought one in 1987 and it is still working to this day
Good video, but you should have used the 15202 instead of the 15300 ... hurts the feelings of the aficionado slightly.
Dr. Strangelove or at least the 15400
Actually the 15300 is theoretically the competitor of Nautilus 5711.
I was thinking the same
Great channel!! Just subscribed. As of this video: Nobody mentions the IWC Ingeneur and Omega Constellation, also by Genta. I would appreciate your comments on having the four compared. Cheers!
One of the best channels for watches; for me at least! I'm lusting over the watches to a point that I'm in need of a doctor...lol
I really appreciate the great designs, irrelevant how much time they took to design. Great every day watches
I'm afraid the diagnosis is watch fever!
Haha...chill dude
To me the Patek is the winner. I love, I love it so much I bought one on finance after watching this
The Royal Oak looks better, I'm a hardcore AP fan, I respect Patek Philippe though🤘
I prefer the Royal Oak.. and own this exact model and color. A wonderfully handsome watch showing strong charter. I love it.
Just bought an AP Royal Oak. 😉
Congrats brother. I am about to get a Nautilus soon :)
I love both but the bracelet and smooth look of the nautilus draws me to it a bit more than the royal oak
Thanks for another quality vid

Good video. I like the earlier (pre-quartz) days the narrator is talking about - when good mechanical watches were still relatively affordable.
They still are. People used to spend a around a months wages on watches.
AP is best
I wish I had the Royal Oak !!! My goodness, how happy I'd be looking at that beautiful yet industrial design. I'd be in heaven.
Get a homage. If you for 2500 USD you can get a PELTON American made with Swiss movement. And for less than 100 USD you can get a Chinese watch from didun/sekaro With great finishing quality and Japanese movement
@@eliransabak1447 shit whatches set your goals and get the real deal yo!
The ap is timeless the patek looks 70s
- I've got a timeless watch
- Have you tried rewinding it?
I absolutely love your videos! Beautiful time pieces! I am curious, are you by chance the narrator for the movie, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events? Lol
AP is more beautiful
Fabrizio Marcetti no
These videos are so well done!
Both watches were original and bold in their day, but to me they look very dated from the 1970s. If the exact same designs were sold by a modestly priced company, no one would have given them the time of day, and they would most probably have been discontinued years ago, like bell bottoms and huge lapels. There is nothing like a REALLY BIG PRICE to make a mediocrity suddenly seem like the greatest object in the world.
kaunas888 you haven’t held one
It's not hard to simply copy the shape of these watches but the precision that goes into their manufacturing is not something anyone can do. How much are they to make? That's a secret that is closely guarded. Are they worth $40,000 then? Probably not but if you buy a Patek you're buying much more than the cost of materials and cost of manufacturing. Yes I know it's kinda nuts but that's how the world works, man.
Congratulations you people understand the concept of products and how they need to sell more than they cost. Maybe try understanding exactly what goes into these watches and youll have a good idea or how much they are “actually worth”. Maybe their older classic design isn’t supposed to appeal to you, marketing 101, understand?
my goodness the way you speak i was so mesmerized and just couldn't let go of my attention on everything you said.
The AP Royal Oak is the original sports steel luxury watch...The original always wins.
Amazing videos. Keep them coming!
Never knew Alan Davies was into watches
Wow. I've never seen your channel before.I'm used to watch reviews on youtube by guys in T-shirts with stubble on their faces, sitting in their living rooms. You Brits do it with much more class.
Both:
- Steel
- Nice
- Way, WAY overpriced
Yes, especially Patek ! 😥
I was able to get the AP for 15k from AD. Totally worth it
i like how the second hands are running at different positions
I'll take the Nautilus please. If I can find one obviously.
Genta was a genius. I love both these designs!
I really have to work hard🧐
