I've never used an airbrush to color book edges, but I could provide some tips. You could fan the edges and brush on some talc. This will keep the page edges from sticking. Then sand the edges with some fine sand paper to get them perfectly smooth before coloring. Also, I would definitely not recommend spray painting the edges. Bookbinders use pigmented India ink. That's what works the best. Which leads me to a question. I color book edges the traditional way as described above, except I do one edge at a time with the book in a finishing press. But do you think diluted pigmented India ink will spray out of an airbrush? I think I'd like to experiment with it a bit.
Thank you so much for doing this video!! I’ve always wanted to know if there was a way to spray the edges of books myself but had no clue even where to begin! This was super helpful and fun to watch. It turned out beautifully! I’d love if you did a video on the airbrushing parts since I’ve never used one it would be great to know how to set it up, get even color, clean it, etc. Also how long did you wait after finishing for it to dry before unclamping and flipping through the book?
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Maybe I can convince kivox to do a video on the airbrushing itself. You honestly don’t have to wait long at all. It dries almost instantly 😊
Can't you just use something like aluminum foil to cover up the stuff you want to protect? I feel like that might be easier to do with the same layer of efficiency (so long you don't tear it accidentally)?
Aluminum foil is not sticky so if the edges aren’t pressed down in someway you may get overspray and it will get onto things that you don’t want it to get onto even with taping down the edges sometimes it still happens but you can use the other one in foil for the majority of the covering like I did with the paper
This is so cool! It's the first time I've seen an airbrush being used for this, but it makes sense since there's better control and more colour customizations possible compared to spray cans. One thing though, how even is the paint when the pages are flipped or curved? Painting with brushes looks really even when the book is closed, but it's visibly uneven and streaky when the pages are bent in any way. Is it the same with airbrushing? Also does the paint bleed through with multiple coats?
I think it looks even when flipping through the book. It doesn’t look visibly uneven. I did not have any bleeding of the paint but I’m sure that can vary based on type of paint
I definitely want to try this! Looking into your brush and compressor. This may be a stupid question but do either come with the cord to connect the two or is that purchased separately
Was the little container of paint enough to spray all the edges or did you need to mix more paint? How do you make sure its the exact same color in that case?
Hey I tried this method of spraying my book edges, and for some reason my pages all stuck together and I had to peel them all apart. Would you know why it could have happened? Thanks 😊
Anyone know how they do stencils? Obviously spraying seems to get the best results but what stencil allows for spraying without getting under it on this kind of surface? Or do they spray the edges and stencil with paint brushes on top?
Most likely the ones that have writing or different colors are not actually sprayed it’s more of a printing process kind of like an inkjet printer, but what I would do if I wanted to stencil some thing on I would make a stencil out of a low tack vinyl using something like a vinyl cutter, you just have to make sure that The adhesive isn’t too strong that it will tear the pages, also I would definitely experiment on something else before committing
I have tried doing this to get my pages white, and for some reason white sinks into the page? Does anyone know why this happens? More specifically, how to get around it? I've tried spray-paint white and that sinks in too. I tried a spray gesso but when you fan/turn the pages it chips away.
That awesome was from meekachii, this is Kivox, that’s awesome 😎 and a big reason I upgraded and got a new one and a mini spray booth and all new paints 😅, I want to start making some random Gunpla videos here and there just for fun. It’s a great tool to have for anyone that likes crafts
Do we need to use the compressor with the airbrush? I was planning to purchase the airbrush you linked (inexpensive option) and acrylic paints from multiple stores. Should that be enough to do the job?
I don’t remember if it was blue stuff from the bottle or not , but it it was blue then it was a 50/50 mix of windex and water and if it was clear it was just water. The paint was to thick most likely so I add a little bit to thin it out. Do you want the consistency of milk when spraying it’s out of an airbrush. I hope that answers the question. Let me know and I’ll try to answer again if it didn’t.
who isn't a sucker for sprayed edges? thanks for sharing.
Hmm which book of mine am I willing to destroy in order to practice doing this...?
😂 our practice book was Roar because I didn’t like it
You should use a book that you didn’t like
Mine was a destroyed paperback french version of twilight
You could go to a used book shop and get a book for $1 haha that’s what I’m gonna do.
The in-between state when only the edges are coloured is also very very cool. You can make a whole new artsy vibe styling the book edges!
I absolutely love the look of coloured edges and I really want to try this but I am so terrified
This is awesome! My son is an artist and he's going to do some books for me. 😁
I’ve used my mini heat press to flatten some bent pages and shipping wrinkles
I'm so late to the sprayed book game but loving it so much.
i don't think you're late because im just starting
I am in the process of getting my book published. I would love to have my copy custom in this way.
The best video of spraying books. Great Video Quality! I’m ordering the supplies tonight lol
If you have trouble with bent pages in the future, run a hair straightener over them and they should smooth out
I have Peace And Turmoil. I wish there was a store that did sprayed edges. Though it looked blue, it turned out beautiful.
I don’t know why it looked so blue, in real life it was definitely purple, I think it’s my camera setting, 😅
there is an etsy shop that does sprayed edges. ;) i recently got one done and its awesome!
Yes Yes Yes on the airbrush setup video. (can you include proper after cleaning also) Thank you in advance!
very interesting personality and style. edge looks nice as well
that fantastic beast t-shirt though, love it!

It may work, you want it to be the consistency of milk, but I don’t know about inks, I’ve never tested it
@@KivoxEnder Thanks. In that case I'll probably have to add some kind of binding/ thickening agent.

Thanks for sharing these. For the most part, sprayed edges are beautiful. 💖😊
Any recommendations for UK supplies?
Yes please do a video on airbrushing
I’d like a video about how to set up and clean a airbrush
If you want to take just a little tack off the tape you can tape it to your shirt or pants first.
I love the sprayed edges ♥️
Awesome Video! Thank you for making the tutorial

@@KivoxEnder Thanks for the update! Would love to see you guys do a video on the airbrushing parts as well, it's really fun to watch 😊

Thanks kivox I'll attempt this.😀😀

That looks amazing, well done Kivox
Thanks. Beautiful
Sand the edge of the pages lightly before spraying to get rid of imperfections
I like it , good tip

OH I SEE YOU COMING FOR MY BRAND, BOO BOO. 😉🥪
no way my dude , but I did watch one of your videos so I could bind a book 😁👍
I love this. Thanks for sharing 😍
Hey I tried this method of spraying my book edges, and for some reason my pages all stuck together and I had to peel them all apart. Would you know why it could have happened? Thanks 😊
Maybe you sprayed too much at once. Spray one thin layer, wait a bit until it is dry and add another layer. I hope that helped.
i think this is normal, even normal books i bought in the bookstore (with sprayed edges) had pages that were stuck together and i had to undo them
You should sell sprayed edge books XD
How do I find the video on setting up an airbrush did you ever make it
You have David from Cyberpunk Edgerunners vibes lol
Awesome job!!! Do you do custom orders?
Thanks!!! Sorry but unfortunately we don’t at this time
Thank you ☺️
im a book lover
I would love to do this with my Riley Sager hardcover books, but I am too scared lol

I want to do this
I used acrylics but it peeled off on the edges and looks weird after I separated the pages 🤧
Well I just bought an air brush set because my husband said he needs it for when he builds his gundam models anyways 😂😂
Awesome!!

It should be , just go slow remember you can always add more if needed
She cant find a tutorial for it.

Hi. I love you guys. That is all
When you're done spraying the color, does it need to be sealed? Or will the color not transfer once it's dry? I want to do this to a few of my books.
No, I never did a top coat. It lasted very well over time
Thanks! I can't wait to start spraying my edges ♡
What kind of paint is used?
If I use a spray can, do I have to use a special colour or just normal spray colour? 😂
How long does it take for the spray to dry??
Depending on how much you spray it can dry in seconds, but it's always safer to give it extra time
what shimmer paints do you recommend go well with this air paint gun?
This is what I have amzn.to/2TctosI
@@KivoxEnder thanks so much!:) great video

Can anyone tell me the exact email to send my wands for review? I've seen it spelled as NewWandsDay and NewWandsday and newwandsday. Thanks!
It doesn’t matter what letters are capitalized you could send it to any of those, newwandsday@gmail.com will work
Thank you!🤙
How much do you charge to get it done?
Unfortunately we just did this for fun
*No disrespect, you tooked.way to long, to get to the point*
🤷🏼♀️
Id like to pay you to do this for me on couple books . How much would you charge me? Please get back to me and thank you
I’m sorry but unfortunately we don’t have the time and resources to do any at this time. That includes for my own books 😬
Hiw liong dies 1 wait hefore stretching pages??? Pls help tk u
With this technique you can open the book within a few minutes... if that’s what you’re asking
No link to the outro music in the description? sadface
Here I thought you did something awesome, like paint scenes on the book edges. Nope, not you. Just slapped some plain color on the edge.
Yep that’s it, I will probably ruin the book if I try to paint scenes on the edges lol 😆
Need to talk less imo
Just mute it and watch it in 2x speed 😁
